Mayfield Senior School’s Summer Institute Mayfield Senior School’s Summer Institute is a vibrant, innovative, educational and fun program. Classes are designed to enrich mind and body during the summer months, while allowing middle school girls to experience an all-girls educational setting. Classes are available to young women entering grades 5-12. Classes are offered for as many as five weeks and for as little as one week and can be tailored to a particular student’s summer schedule. The University of California approves some of the courses offered during the summer while others are offered for non-credit. Mayfield Senior School is a Catholic, independent, college-preparatory school for young women. Mayfield admits students of any race, color, religion, and national or ethnic orgin. Located at the edge of Pasadena’s Arroyo Seco, the 7.75 acre campus provides Mayfield with one of the most beautiful secondary school campuses in Southern California. Its location provides convenient access to the Pasadena, Ventura and Foothill Freeways.

Arts @Mayfield The Mayfield Summer Institute for the Arts provides a creative and highly challenging arts program within summer’s relaxed atmosphere. Technique and concept-centered arts instruction focus on developing personal expression in each artistic discipline. The philosophy of Mayfield’s Art Department is not only to foster a creative mind, but also a trained one. Beginning/Intermediate Dance (346)

Open to students in grades 7 through 12

Have you ever wanted to learn more about photography and the darkroom? This class centers on camera operation and aesthetics, exposure control, film processing, printmaking, and the development of a personal style. Regular shooting assignments and group discussion and critiques encourage individual skills and interests. A survey of photographic history is included to increase visual awareness and to suggest the relationship of photography to other visual arts. Required items to be supplied by the student: 35mm SLR (single lens reflex) manual control camera with internal light meter, 6-8 rolls of Kodak T-max 100 Black and White 35mm film, and a three-ring binder. (Photography Studio in Strub Hall)

Open to students in grades 7 through 9

Tap into your spirit through dance! This class is for the beginning to intermediate level student (one-two years experience in dance). The course will focus on technique training in ballet, modern/contemporary, jazz, hip-hop, musical theatre and cultural dance. This course is for the student interested in the Dance Conservatory or for those who just want to strengthen their technique. It is also the perfect course for incoming Mayfield students, as it provides an atmosphere for them to get to know each other. Students will perform in a final recital on July 24. Advanced Dance/Performance Lab (345)

This class is for the serious dance student. This course will focus on ballet, modern/ contemporary, conditioning, choreography, dancer’s process, performance skills and Hip Hop. Along with the regular classes, Two days a week the students will take an off campus dance excursion to study at some of LA’s most popular dance studios.

Focus your creativity and sharpen your art skills this summer! This studio art class emphasizes the principles and technical skills applicable to further study in all high school visual arts disciplines. The course includes instruction in drawing, painting, collage, and mixed media. Major artists and art movements are discussed, with a focus on the 20th and 21st centuries. This is an excellent class for junior high school students considering joining Mayfield’s Visual Arts Conservatory. All materials are provided except for a 11”x16” sketchbook needed for each student. This course is for the student who is already part of the Dance Conservatory and any other student who would like to pursue her training and creative process. Explore the craft of acting in a fun and focused course. This class, for the interested student, emphasizes physical, vocal and creative training and is designed to expand your skills as a performer. Subjects will include improvisation, personal expression and dramatic exploration. Students will

Arts @Mayfield learn about character creation, focus on stage and creating an ensemble through teamwork. Each year, the summer program highlights a different dramatic form, and students are encouraged to repeat the course to further build their dramatic skills. Summer Theatre Performance Lab with Unbound Productions (324) Open to students in grades 7 through 12

Join professional theatre group Unbound Productions in every step of the production process - from adapting the script to rehearsal, staging to production design. Open to Actors, Technicians and Creative Writers who wish to participate in all aspects of the creation of a staged reading of a work of literature. This staged reading will take place alongside a professional production in historic locations on the Mayfield campus before a public audience. Summer Arts Intensives This program of short intensive classes is designed for the student who wants to explore a new art form or delve deeper into a specific skill in theatre or music.

Dance, Film, Digital Media (337) Open to students in grades 7 through 12

Whether we document dance rehearsals or create videos to share with friends through YouTube, digital media is increasingly important to dance. This workshop takes an artistic and movement centered approach to dance and digital media. No prior experience with digital media and filming is necessary! After watching some dance films and learning a short dance phrase, we will collectively embark on our own dance and digital media adventure. First, we will literally ask the camera to dance along with us as we experiment with filming the dance we just learned. We will then discuss how choreography, camera, location, and editing work when it comes to filming dance. Finally, we will then work together to create our very own unique dance film by the end of the workshop. June 23 – July 3 (Two weeks) 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. $250

Commercial Acting Workshop (325) Open to students in grades 6 through 12

Experience the many forms of commercial acting - from cold reading techniques to improvisation, from real life testimonials to product placement, from solo spots to group work. Using Technology in Music Making: from Sound Systems to Software (331) Open to students in grades 7 through 12

This class is a great way to get a fastpaced introduction to music theory or refresher on its basic concepts. We will learn and review basic music theory and aural skills concepts including notation, clefs, rhythm, meters, key signatures, circle of fifths, major/minor scales and beginning chord building. This is a required class for students interested in taking AP music theory. Ability to read basic music notation is required. June 23 – July 3 (Two weeks) 9 – 11 a.m. $250

3D Digital Design (103)

This fun and informative 2-week intensive will provide insight into the world of using technology in music making. The first week will focus on sound systems, microphones, amps, pedals and popular music software overview. In week two we will learn how to record, track, loop, mix and export using Garageband and create one fun computer based project. No prior knowledge of sound equipment or recording is needed to be successful in this course, though basic music and computer skills are encouraged and students will need to bring a laptop or ipad and headphones to class.

The 3D Digital Design class means having fun exploring digital software in a fine art and practical way, creating 3-dimensional models, sculptures, rooms, architecture and other 3D projects in a computer lab setting. It will be cool to “walk through” 3-dimensional spaces that you create. This class will use SketchUp and Photoshop software and we will print your finished 3D renderings. After this class you can create anything you can think of in 3 dimensions and explore it in a 3D world. *Limited to 14 students

Summer Fun Instrumental Ensemble (334) Open to students in grades 7 through 12

This class is a wonderful opportunity to keep playing music during the summer! The ensemble will stretch our minds on what is music by exploring a range of musical styles that might include popular, world music, experimental, drones and free improvisation. This super fun and easy class is open to those playing any musical instrument. Prerequisites: intermediate instrumental proficiency; ability to read basic music notation. Each session will conclude with a recital at the end of the session. July 7 – 17 (Two weeks) 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. $250

Give students practice searching for information in different academic disciplines, using online and print search tools. Give students practice identifying citation elements in a variety of sources. Teach techniques for organizing and annotating source material and how to use citation tools/manuals to accurately cite a variety of source types.

Each student will develop her own writer’s voice as she strengthens the composition skills essential for success in high school. Through structured assignments students will practice developing clear thesis statements, crafting strong topic sentences, and supporting their claims with appropriate supporting details. As they prepare logical, meaningful arguments, students will also sharpen their introductions and conclusions, use of transitions, and control of grammar and mechanics.

This workshop is open to student writers of all levels and interests. You will be given a variety of exercises to get your creative juices flowing. Students will write short stories, creative nonfiction, and scripts. You will be able to share your writing with your classmates for feedback and encouragement. This course will reinforce the most essential grammar concepts needed to write effectively. Using their own writing as a starting point, students will improve their mastery of sound sentence structure. With ample practice in manipulating language skillfully, students will increase their confidence and readiness to write across the high school curriculum. Literature Rome, Greece, and The Hunger Games (605) Open to students in grades 7 through 12

Suzanne Collins’ trilogy offers an abundance of classical allusions and references. The Reaping and Hunger Games are patterned after the myth of Theseus and the Labyrinth; the name of the dystopian country where the story is set evokes the imperial Roman byword Panem et Circenses (‘bread and circuses’); most of the characters associated with the Capitol, from the designer Cinna to President Coriolanus Snow to Head Gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee, have Roman names. This course will explore these and more classical underpinnings to The Hunger Games, including the use of the Latin and Greek languages and myth in the story, as well as the role of sport and ritualized violence in the novels, in classical Greek and Roman societies, and in our own. This class will explore the history of film starting with Charlie Chaplin’s “City Lights” and continuing through the best in classic films including musicals, westerns, thrillers, comedies, dramas, romances and fantasies. Drawing from the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 Best Movies of all time, we will watch and discuss how these films defined their artistic genre and contributed to our cultural literacy. Science Introduction to Experimental Science (121) Mayfield Science Department permission required

Through formulating questions, designing experiments, making observations, deriving results, and forming conclusions, students learn laboratory skills. These skills include the use of lab equipment to obtain measurements, the determination of accuracy and precision, the application of reason and mathematical skills to find relationships and patterns, and the ability to work individually and in groups to solve problems. A lab manual and handbook will be available from the instructor on the first day for $10.00. (The purchase of a textbook is required.) Summer Science Research (122) Mayfield Science Department permission required

Students will explore transportation alternatives in light of global warming with the support of a grant from British Petroleum. Students will run experiments and analyze data on the catalytic pyrolysis of methane to produce hydrogen and microfiberous carbon with the aim of producing hydrogen as a possible transportation fuel without putting

significant carbon dioxide into the environment. Some coursework will take place at the California Institute of Technology. June 23 – July 24 (Five weeks) 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. $600 (fee is for non-Mayfield students only)

Technology Web Development 101: HTML, CSS, Javascript, and Ruby on Rails (125) Open to students in grades 9 through 12

Have you ever wondered how Twitter works? Or how to create your own app? Or just how to change the background color on your own web page? This class will answer those questions for you. focusing on web-centered programming languages. We will be learning how to program in HTML, CSS, Javascript, and Ruby on Rails--four of the most omnipresent and useful web development tools today. This course will be 5 weeks in length (2.5 weeks for HTML/CSS/Javascript, and 2.5 weeks for Ruby on Rails). We will be meeting/ discussing online in a Google Hangout, and we will also meet on campus once a week to present our ongoing projects. Being a hybrid online and in-person class will help us all make sure we check in, debug, and stay motivated as we go forward!

Blogging/Vlogging: Journaling in the Digital Age (126) Open to students in grades 7 through 12

It can be difficult to figure out ways to catalogue our feelings, memories, hopes, and inspiration in a digital age. This class will help students learn how to journal these emotions in a digital way, preserving them for future record. The course will focus on blogging for the first few weeks, focusing on how to build the readership you want, as well as how to structure and format your ideal template. HTML/CSS will be a part of this first part of the course. The second 2.5 weeks will focus on vlogging, and will focus on how to document your life on Youtube while still being respectful and responsible of your own privacy, as well as others’. Both courses will focus on the rules of fair use, how to navigate copyright, and what constitutes original work vs. plagiarized work. At the end, we’ll have a great document of the Summer of 2014! Engineering Robotics (124) Open to students in grades 5 through 9

Robots have been used for everything from ‘boring, repetitive tasks’ such as assembly line work to space exploration. Robots have found their way into the classroom in this introductory course. All materials will be provided for teams of students to build and operate ‘clawbots’. Obstacle courses and games will be included in this 2 week session (which repeats). Students will learn about building and design, math, teamwork and even management skills preparing them for science, engineering, or biomedical careers in the future, or even as hobbyists who might want to participate in competitions. *Limited to 16 students per session Session 1: June 23 – July 3 / 1 – 2 p.m. Session 2: July 14 – 24 / 1 – 2 p.m. $200

Pre-Engineering Boot Camp I: Introduction to AutoCAD (127) Open to students in grades 9 through 12

Not great at drawing 2d and 3d blueprints? No problem! AutoCAD will do it for you! Autodesk’s CAD software is designed to not only create and model your inventions, but also to see how they behave in real-world environments. This course will introduce you

to AutoCAD (and its mechanical-engineeringfocused brother, Inventor) in a quick, 2-week “Boot Camp” which will focus on hands-on training and projects. The course is meant to give you a leg up in any engineering program you may later attend, as all of them will require knowledge of CAD software. Pre-Engineering Boot Camp II: Introduction to Python/MATLAB (128) Open to students in grades 9 through 12 who have taken the Pre-Engineering Boot Camp I

Get ready to get engineering! Every Physics and Engineering program in the country counts on its students to know Python and MATLAB to work in labs; here’s your chance to get a leg up in those areas! Come take a 1-week introductory course on Python, where you’ll learn the basics in a projectbased environment. Then follow it up with a 1-week MATLAB course, where you’ll get to know how MATLAB works and why it’s been the most used/taught computer language in science programs for the last 10 years. No prior coding experience is necessary. July 7 – July 17 (Two weeks) Mondays from 2 – 4 p.m. with additional online work and meet-ups $300

Mathematics Math for High School (100) Open to students in grade 9 by Math Department recommendation

This course is designed to help incoming Mayfield freshman students prepare for high school mathematics. Topics include the number line, inequalities, absolute value, solving equations, programming techniques, and word problems. Students who are recommended for this class are given priority enrollment. Preparing for Algebra (101) Open to students in grades 7 and 8

This course is designed to prepare students for Algebra. There will be a review of decimals, percents, equations, and inequalities. This course will enable students to

make a transition from concrete to abstract thinking. Students will be introduced to sets, properties of operations, solving equations, and word problems. (The purchase of a textbook is required.) June 23 – July 24 (Five weeks) Session 1: 8 – 9 a.m. Session 2: 9 – 10 a.m. $350

Algebra (102) Open to students in grades 7 through 9

This class is designed to teach the fundamentals of Algebra and its many applications in science, technology, business, and everyday life. The class will cover the fundamentals of Algebra that are most needed for success in the future math courses. A TI82/83+ calculator is recommended, but not required. Athletics @Mayfield Mayfield Summer Sports Camps are designed to provide the student/athlete with a foundation of fundamental skills, knowledge, character and leadership development and a love of athletics. Recognizing that while skills and drills are critical to the improvement of the athlete, making sports FUN is essential to developing the “passion for the game.” Our multi sports camps offer a cross training to not only help develop overall athleticism, but keep sport fresh and exciting. Please Note: Participation in any of the summer athletic classes does not guarantee a place on a MSS team. All students must try out each year to earn a place on a team. To participate in any summer sports program, a current physical and medical release form must be on file in the Athletic office. Forms may be downloaded from iMSS. High School Sport (017) Open to Mayfield Senior School Students only

Receive advanced and specific training in technical and tactical elements to get your game to the next level. This camp will teach individual techniques, skills and tactics through creative and motivating drills designed to increase a player’s passion for the game. Recommended for rising freshmen to seniors serious about playing a varsity sport. Fitness and Health (006) Open to students in grade 10 through 12 Pre-requisite: a full year of Fitness & Wellness

This course is about enjoying life and pursuing a healthy lifestyle. The goal is to provide students with knowledge that helps them make informed decisions affecting their life choices. The content of the course will involve aspects of health related physical activity and training principals. Students will gain practical information about how to make good decisions that will positively affect their well-being. June 23 – July 17 (Four weeks) 11:15 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. $400 (UC accredited class and .25 unit of credit. Students must attend all classes to receive credit)

Combo Fitness (010) Open to students in grades 7 through 12

Get motivated and energized in a fun group environment. Tone up, achieve cardiovascular fitness and reduce stress with activities such as yoga, aerobics, body shaping, balance ball workouts, hikes and much more. Bring a towel and water. Cubs Camp (014) Open to students in grades 5 through 8

The Mayfield Senior School Big Red Sports Camp is week long camp geared towards giving campers a unique introduction to several different sports. They will be engaged in activities led by a team of fun counselors and coaches. With a new sport being offered each day, campers will be able to experience several different sports within a short time period. The camp is dedicated to teaching team work, sportsmanship and positive self esteem. Mornings will be packed with fun and creative sports-specific games as well as team building activities.

Sports Activities: Volleyball, tennis, softball, basketball, capture the flag, aqua aerobics, hiking, dodgeball and more. Cubs Camp will give students the opportunity to learn basic skills of several different sports while having fun and meeting new people. general information All classes meet Monday through Thursday from June 23 through July 24 unless otherwise indicated in the catalogue. July 4 is a holiday. No classes will meet on July 4. Enrollment Procedure Complete the registration and emergency forms and return them with a check made out to Mayfield Senior School with the full tuition and registration payment no later than Friday, May 30. Class size is limited and enrollment is determined on a first come first served basis. If a class is full, students will be placed on a waiting list. If an opening does not occur, tuition and registration will be refunded in full. Registration confirmation will be mailed upon receipt of registration. Schedules will be mailed prior to the beginning of Summer School. Refund Policy All fees are non-refundable unless a class is cancelled by the school, the class is full, a student does not make it off a wait list and must withdraw, or a student who has applied for financial aid is not awarded sufficient aid to make the class economically feasible for the family. Cancellation of Classes All courses are offered on condition of adequate enrollment. A full refund will be made in the event of a course cancellation or students may choose an alternate course. Notification of cancelled classes will be made by Friday, June 13, 2014. School Hours Summer Institute hours are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday unless otherwise indicated in the catalogue. With the exception of the lunch hour, students are required to be in a class while on campus. All students must be picked up when their classes end. Academic Credit Not all courses are offered for academic credit. If a student is taking a course for academic credit, she may request on the registration form that the transcript of course work be mailed to the designated school. Mayfield students will have the course credit added to their transcripts

automatically. Incoming ninth grade students will receive academic credit for Introduction to Experimental Science (IES) only. Financial Aid

Available to incoming and returning Mayfield Senior School students only

Mayfield Senior School is committed to supporting a financial aid program for students who would like to take part in the summer program but lack sufficient financial resources to meet the full tuition costs. Need-based financial aid will be awarded to incoming and returning Mayfield Senior School students. In order to qualify for tuition assistance, families must demonstrate financial need. Please contact Clemmie Phillips, Director of Summer Institute, for information about Financial Aid. Dress Code Dress is casual yet appropriate for school (e.g. shorts, T-shirts, jeans, etc.). Students are expected to use good judgment in their choice of clothing. No bare midriffs, short shorts, or short skirts. Lunch The Summer Institute does not provide lunch. Students may bring their own snacks and lunch and have use of the kitchen in Strub Hall, including the use of the microwave and refrigerator. Off-Campus Policy If a student drives herself, she may leave for lunch or when her class is over. Otherwise, students are not allowed to leave campus for lunch or for any other reason without adult supervision or parental permission. Behavior Students are expected to adhere to school rules and behave properly. Violation of the school’s code of conduct may lead to a student’s dismissal with no tuition refund.
