“One thing that sets me apart from others is my love for Mayfield Junior School. Sure, everybody loves the school, but I’d be willing to bet a million dollars that I love it more. I’m the only person I know of that would rather stay at MJS than go to high school. The Mayfield environment is truly amazing. The students, teachers, and campus are what make me proud I go here. Mayfield Junior School has made me a better human being.” - Henry Suarez, Class of 2015

Mission Mayfield Junior School, a Catholic independent school founded and sponsored by the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, implements the philosophy of the Holy Child Schools which is based on trust and reverence for the dignity of every person. We are committed to the religious and educational development of each child and to maintaining a sense of community and family spirit that welcomes people of diverse backgrounds. At Mayfield each child is challenged to reach his or her potential. We encourage our students to respond to the needs of our time with compassion, integrity and confidence in God and in their own gifts.

Philosophy Mayfield Junior School of the Holy Child Jesus is a Catholic, independent, day school for boys and girls, grades K through 8. Founded and sponsored by the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, Mayfield implements the goals of the Holy Child Network of Schools and is distinguished by the educational philosophy of Cornelia Connelly, the Society’s foundress. The Holy Child philosophy is based on trust and reverence for the dignity of every person and is shaped by the living tradition of over 150 years of international experience educating youth. Mayfield is committed to Cornelia Connelly’s belief in the development of the whole child as a spiritual, intellectual, creative and athletic person. Within a rigorous academic course of study, Mayfield students are challenged to reach their individual potential based on their abilities, talents and learning styles in order to meet the needs and wants of our time. Mayfield faculty and staff nurture each student’s growth through dynamic, active learning opportunities in an environment that fosters respectful interactions, excellence and meaningful reflection. In concert with their families, students develop an understanding of the Catholic faith and participate in its traditions. Building on the diversity of our own community, an understanding of the greater world is woven into each child’s life at Mayfield. As our students mature, they learn to make choices that contribute to the lives of others while enriching their own lives. The students are united into a community of faith-in-action, reaching beyond themselves with a sense of responsibility to serve others and to protect the dignity and sacredness of life. Mayfield Junior School cherishes a spirit of warmth and love that invites the students, parents, faculty and staff from the past, present and future into what is a proud and evolving tradition, the Mayfield Family, a tangible expression of God’s love for one another.

letter from the headmaster

There are so many wonderful things to reflect upon when looking back over the past year at Mayfield Junior School. We have continued to witness meaningful and noteworthy advances in every aspect of school life for both students and adults. The collective efforts of many have allowed us to serve the needs of our students successfully and deliver the promise of a Holy Child education to our families. Whether we look at academic engagement, personal development or spiritual formation, I feel that the student experience today is more complete and dynamic than ever before. Our students are exploring their education with confidence and focus while embracing the lessons associated with strengthening their character. Mayfield teachers are guiding these young people to appreciate and understand the value of making a positive difference in the world around them. Our school community is blessed to have an established direction set by our Mission and Holy Child Network Goals. The unifying affect of these standards supports all our work and leads us in our efforts to, as Mother Cornelia directed us, “Meet the wants of the age! To this end, I want to thank our Board of Trustees, both under the leadership of past chair Geoff Bland and current chair Michael Buchanan. The Trustees are the cornerstone of our work and provide the consistent voice so necessary to moving our school forward. Recognizing and measuring the successes of Mayfield Junior School is important so that we can aspire to greater things. Our enrollment picture continues to be very strong buoyed by a selective admissions program and very low attrition rate. MJS graduates move on to the finest high schools in the area and students from the Class of 2011 matriculated to outstanding colleges including Stanford, Yale, USC and Boston College. It is always wonderful to hear how well our graduates are doing out in the bigger world and is a direct reminder to us all of how important our work is. I want to thank all the volunteers who give their time and passion to making so many aspects of our school life possible. Whether an event like the Christmas Luncheon or Benefit, our community has vibrancy because of their contributions and enthusiasm. When I talk about partnerships in school there is none more important or beneficial than the one shared with our parents. This annual report is a chance to celebrate and recognize all the financial support offered and provided to the school from hundreds of people. The one thing in common amongst all these folks is the commitment to helping us put forth the best education possible for our students. A robust and comprehensive program that serves them all is complicated and demands a great deal of resources in terms of personnel, supplies and facilities. Mayfield is the fine school it is today thanks to the generosity of all of you. The Annual Giving Fund, event proceeds and designated gifts all combine to not only perpetuate the standards, but also improve them. Thanking you in this letter is a small way to extend my sincere gratitude on behalf of all the students at Mayfield Junior School. May the Holy Child Mission always guide us and our pursuits of excellence inspire us. Blessings,

Joseph J. Gill 5

board of trustees report

As Mayfield Junior School’s new Board Chair I am pleased to share with you the 2014-15 Annual Report. The pages that follow highlight the many successes from last year. The generosity of those listed is inspiring and will help make our unified hopes and dreams for Mayfield a reality. As a community, we are fortunate to have such a strong and vibrant leader in Joe Gill. His work with our faculty and staff provides the foundation for a nurturing and engaging academic environment. And most importantly, Joe is dedicated to instilling the principles of a Holy Child education in our children. The Board of Trustees is blessed to serve with Joe and the dedicated and enthusiastic team of professionals at Mayfield Junior School. Collectively, we strive for excellence at our school. As I begin my term, I am incredibly grateful for the strong leadership provided by previous Board

Chairs; most recently Geoff Bland. Geoff’s tenure as Board Chair built upon the foundation and advances made under previous Boards. Mayfield Junior School is stronger thanks to Geoff’s results-driven commitment to the school. Under his leadership, we have strengthened support of our faculty by recommitting ourselves to funding their time, effort and talent through increased salaries and robust professional development. that our current Board is committed toward building on the progress made before us. We all know that it takes many to achieve great success, thank you for your dedication to Mayfield Junior School. I have watched our volunteers take action in many ways and know together we make a positive difference in the lives of our children, both today and tomorrow. On a personal note, Angela and I feel blessed to have three children at a school that truly recognizes the importance of faith, culture and community in the development of our children. It was over seven years ago now when we first walked onto the Mayfield campus for the first time, and it didn’t take us long to appreciate how unique this school was. Something connected with us that day that has only grown stronger over the years. It’s our hope that all MJS families experience the joy of a similar connection with our school. Thank you again for your support of Mayfield today and into the future. Each year brings new and exciting plans and I look forward to sharing in the process and the successes with you. May the blessings of the Holy Child be with you and your families.

very happy at their previous school. But since they’ve been at Mayfield, we’ve been able to see the difference in our daughters as they move from being ‘happy’ to expressing their ‘joy.’ We can best describe the difference as follows: happy feels more internal, and is just who they are; joy feels both internal and external, and is just how they are. At Mayfield, they are encouraged to express their joy, and to be who and how they are. And the community paves the road with smiles, hugs, encouragement and guidance.” - Crystal Morales-Johnson, Parent

“The Harmony Project was one of the best things about my 7th grade year! It really pushed all of us to get involved, work together, and step out of our comfort zone. “Mayfield Junior School provides enriching educational experiences for students whether it be in the classroom or as part of the wide array of vibrant extra-curricular activities offered. Through coaching Debate and Academic Decathlon, I have seen first hand how these programs help to encourage students to reach both their own and collective potential, where they are able to further hone their teamwork, presentation, research and time management skills, whilst having a lot of fun at the same time.” - Sam Donaldson, Faculty

encouraging dreamers, doers and thinkers “A quote from Dr. Spencer Kagan reflects the philosophy of our lower school teachers: ‘If you want them to hear it, you talk. If you want them to learn it, they talk.’ At Mayfield Junior School classrooms are abuzz with purposeful, active conversations between students designed to maximize learning. ” - Laura Kennedy, Lower School Director

events Golf Classic for Endowment On October 17, 2014 the Mayfield community took over Angeles National Golf Club for an incredible event. 120 golfers took to the course for a round defined more by the fun had than the golf shots made. Golfers were greeted at the 18th hole by spouses and friends who had already kicked off the Happy Hour with a rocking ’80s band. Thanks to the generosity of our community, $102,000 was raised for the Mayfield Endowment. These funds have both an immediate impact on the School and our children as well as ensuring the long-term sustainability of the school through smart investment. This party would have been impossible without Dan Goldthwait as the Co-Chair, and a very active committee. Many thanks to everyone involved for their help along the way, their participation on the course, and their active participation in the live auction, making this a successful event. Benefit 2015: Run Away with the Circus Circus Lovers of all ages, “Run Away with the Circus!”....what more can we say? This years’ Benefit truly was a magnificent celebration of the Greatest School on Earth! The magic began with the idea of a circus theme and became a reality due to the endless efforts of this loving and gracious community. The donations were of elephant sized proportions and everyone came together in giving more than we could have dreamed. It was a night that will be remembered and treasured. Parents were reminded of the importance of “being a kid!” and the money raised ensures that our children have the best place on earth to learn, live and love! Thank you to all of our endless supporters - Ring Masters, monkeys and clowns. May you always find the child in you that loves the circus! Cheers, Angela Buchanan and Erika Foy 2015 Benefit Chairs

“In a day and age when instant messaging isn’t fast enough, it’s refreshing to know MJS still takes time to do things right. Students build character not only from the faith-based curriculum, but also by taking a few moments to foster simple daily routines. At the start of every day, we gather for Morning Prayer, and in doing so, reinforce a lesson of character. When we pray together there is a true sense that we are a caring community. We pause to pray because we honor and respect our faith. We make time to celebrate our sports teams and academics, and praise effort, integrity, and courage. When it concludes with a whimsical philosophical quote, we feel blessed and ready to rise to the day’s challenges. For many of us, it is the best ten minutes of our entire day. Character matters at MJS! There is no doubt that our kids will be wonderful additions to the global village someday.” - Eugene Tsai, Parent

Parents’ Association It was a wonderful year at Mayfield. I am so proud to be a part of this community of loving, devoted and hard working individuals. I have spent many years here both as a student and parent and most recently as Parents’ Association President. My love for this school continues to grow everyday. It is a joy to be on campus with so many amazing people who are teaching, guiding and looking after our children. I feel blessed to have worked with so many dedicated parents this year in support of our school. With enthusiastic committee chairs and volunteers, we were able to accomplish a great deal. The presence of parent volunteers on campus on any given day is quite impressive and it is something that makes our school so special. We love this place and it shows! I am thankful for all of you and appreciate your commitment to Mayfield Junior School. Wishing you all good things, Rebecca Reed

partnership for success The Partnership for Success! is a multi-grade level summer program that partners Polytechnic School, Westridge School, Chandler School and Mayfield Junior School with the Pasadena Unified School District. Each summer, the Partnership! provides an intensive five-week enrichment program to approximately 400 public-school students who are chosen by their school principals based on their academic promise and financial need. Once students are nominated in their fourth grade year, they remain in the program for eight consecutive summers. This long-term commitment between the Partnership! and its students is essential to the program’s success. With the generous support of the foundations, corporations and individuals listed below this valuable and successful program continues to make a difference in the lives of the students each year.

Cash

Memorial or Remembrance Gifts

Current cash gifts are deductible for income tax purposes to the full extent allowed by law, and may be made with cash, check or credit card. Pledge payments can be arranged.

Given in memory or in honor of a loved one, these contributions benefit the School while providing a cherished gift for an individual or family. The sisters, faculty and staff, and students remember in prayer these special intentions at school Mass.

Appreciated Assets

Planned Gifts

If you own stock or other capital assets that have appreciated in value, a gift of these securities to Mayfield can result in significant tax savings. You may be able to obtain a tax deduction for the full value of the gift and avoid paying tax on the gain you would have paid if the asset was sold.

the euclid society

Mayfield also accepts planned or deferred gifts through life insurance, charitable trusts or bequests. A donor may wish to consider these gift vehicles as a way to reduce or avoid estate and inheritance taxes.

Matching Gifts Many employers such as those listed in this Annual Report will match employees’ donations. This opportunity provides an additional source of income for Mayfield Junior School and an easy way to leverage your gift into a larger donation. My favorite tradition at Mayfield Junior School is the Mother's Christmas Luncheon in December. It gets me every year. I can not avoid a tear dropping from my eye when I take in the live manger scene Crèche. It holds a special place in my heart as the youngest of my four children was the baby Jesus in 2006. It is a beautiful way to begin the Christmas week. -Amy Garrity, parent

My favorite school tradition is the International Fair, which is part of the marvelous Mosaic Month at Mayfield. It provides a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn about different cultures, and to celebrate the diversity within our community that makes our school so special. -Sam Donaldson, faculty

I really loved the Harvest Festival. My family and I used to always try to stack the cakewalk to make sure we came home with something great! -Alex Monroe, Class of 2007

My favorite tradition at Mayfield is School Families. I have seen many schools attempt to create community by bringing together older and younger students across divisions, however I have never seen it as successfully done as here. The leadership training that Ms. Danni develops in the eighth graders, as the Heads of Family, is also key to its success. The family tradition at Mayfield makes a school of over 500 feel much smaller, and I see this reflected daily with students of all grade levels greeting each other, hugging each other, and just hanging out together. -Laura Kennedy, Lower School Director

The Tsai family‘s favorite MJS tradition is the Kindergarten Noah’s Ark Play. It is a wonderful moment for Kindergarten parents to realize how much our “little” kids have grown in a little less than one year of schooling. Our kids absolutely look forward to seeing it performed every year. -Tsai Family

Although there are many things we do together as an entire school, Blue and White Day is so full of spirit and everyone feels united – there is a real sense of community. Plus it’s fun and we get a pancake breakfast! -Kate Salembier, Class of 2016

Our favorite tradition is Morning Prayer. We have the privilege of watching all of the children assemble in community, reflect in prayer, cheer the "Go Mayfield" way, all while getting tidbits of learning and practicing leadership skills, all before 8:15AM! If we get nothing else accomplished in the day, we at least feel blessed to participate in a wonderful start of the day with our kids. -Crystal Morales-Johnson, parent

The Harvest Festival is hands down my favorite tradition at MJS. I love all of the excitement leading up to the event. The build up at Morning Prayer as we count down the days, the chatter in the hallways about costumes and the all-out craziness that happens the morning of the festival makes it a truly fun experience for everybody! -Nicole Sanders, faculty

What is your favorite MJS tradition? Our Contributors: Many thanks to the members of our community who shared their insight and perspective for this publication.

Favorite tradition - Blue and White Day! -Jeff Favretto, Parent

Grandparents Day is our favorite MJS tradition. It is always on our calendar and is a very special day of the year. The children are so happy and proud that their beloved grandparents are coming to their school. The memories of the day are always captured by the photographs taken with our grandchildren. We wouldn’t miss this day for anything in the world. -Mary and Win Loftus, grandparents
