There are many things that bond the people of Wisconsin, although perhaps there is nothing that holds the combination of optimism and collaborative spirit more than the Wisconsin Idea. The original concept is attributed to former UW President Charles Van Hise who declared in 1905, “I shall never be content until the beneficent influence of the University reaches every family of the state.”
The Wisconsin Idea continues to be fully embraced today by students, staff and faculty of the University of Wisconsin system of campuses. It encourages that university research be applied to solve problems and improve health, quality of life, the environment and agriculture for all citizens of our great state. We see examples of this in our work at WARF every day, from engineers working on better ways to treat cancer to plant pathologists developing disease-resistant soybeans.
