On behalf of the Committee let me welcome you to the Kimpton May Festival 2016.

This is my first year as Chairman, and I must take the time to thank our previous Chairman, Andrew Ackrill, for all of his hard work and leadership over the last five years. This year’s theme is Animal Magic, and you will see this reflected in the floats, costumes, events and activities throughout the Festival. Keep a particular look out for the Dinosaur.

Please give your support to our May Queen Charlotte and her attendants Emma and Poppy. This is their weekend, and they are in for a busy time. I am sure they will enjoy themselves and hope they will go away with great memories.

It always surprises me how a small village like Kimpton can produce year on year a top class festival, and I am sure this year will be no different. This, of course, does not happen on its own, it takes a dedicated team of committee members to put it together, all bringing various skills to the table. This year a few new members came forward, and it has especially been encouraging to see a younger element joining our ranks. That said we are always after more members to join our happy band. If you are interested, please approach any Committee member (look out for purple polo shirts) or visit the Committee tent on Saturday or Monday on The Green.

The May Festival is a great social event, but it is important to remember that the money raised by all of you continues to support the Church as well as many groups that operate in and around the village.

Finally for those who are attending for the 1st or 51st time, we hope you enjoy the Festival and please if you see me strolling around or on the bar (probably wearing a silly hat) stop and have a chat. Have a fantastic weekend.

MY GOODNESS, KIMPTON IS A VILLAGE THAT KNOWS HOW TO PARTY! Having experienced my first May Festival, I am now very much looking forward to the next!

The Revd Bonnie Evans-Hills In the little over a year that I’ve been here I’ve listened to some amazing music from local choirs, from Kimpton unplugged and shared folk nights with the Kimpton Sessions. And there is this summer’s upcoming Kimpton Folk Festival! There has been much laughter, and some serious stuff too when much-loved members of the community have died.

The quality of artwork at the May Festival art show in the church is top notch, also in evidence at the various craft fairs and the now monthly farmers market in the Dacre Rooms. Kimpton Players do their part in keeping us all entertained, especially talented at double entendre.

And who could miss all those athletes working out behind the vicarage at the village playing fields? I hear every grunt - and a few choice words too! I wouldn’t have it any other way. It means I am living in the heart of village life.

And I probably meet half the village when I am waiting at the bus stop, especially the ‘Bench Working Party’ – always the best source of village news. Some of the best conversations are on that bus ride into St Albans, Luton or Hitchin.

I have begun a dangerous vein here, bound to leave out mention of key groups and people – so suffice it to say that these are just a few of the incredibly talented and wonderful people I have come to know and love here in Kimpton.

One of my favourite books is not a book of theology or spirituality, but is about human interaction with one another and with the environment in which we live. This is ‘Happy City’, by Charles Montgomery. Montgomery examines what it is that makes for human happiness. While wealth can make a difference, the greatest contribution to happiness is the sense of living in a community where people care for one another, where they feel they know and trust their neighbours, where their children can feel safe and loved, and a proximity to the natural environment. These are things that don’t come easily. They are qualities that need to be worked at and valued.

Care for neighbour, care for our village, care for the world around us, are qualities that matter to Kimpton, and for which people give of their time, energy and heart, especially considering the amount of work that goes into the May Festival all year ‘round. It is a real privilege to now be vicar (a title bestowed properly this last autumn) to the village of Kimpton.

WHERE THE MONEY GOES

THANKS TO EVERYONE’S GENEROSITY THE 2015 MAY FESTIVAL WAS A VERY SUCCESSFUL YEAR, RAISING JUST OVER £23,000. Over the past 10 years the festival has raised over £200,000! Local organisations who run stalls can keep half their profits, donating the other half to the festival funds. This 50% retention amounted to just over £8,000 last year, leaving the Kimpton May Festival Trust with £15,000 to distribute.

KIMPTON PARISH CHURCH RESTORATION FUND RECEIVED £5,000 TO GO TOWARDS THE COST OF REPAIRING & MAINTAINING THE CHURCH BUILDING. £2,000 was given to Kimpton Memorial hall. £1,500 was given to help the on-going restoration of the Dacre rooms. £1500 to Kimpton Primary School KSA, £1,000 was given to Kimpton Tennis club towards their new clubhouse and £1,000 was given to help fund the start up the Kimpton Folk festival. Finally £500 was donated to the local council to help pay for a mobile defibrillator for the village.

We have also been able to support Garden House Hospice, Herts Air Ambulance, Isabel Hospice, Keech Cottage Hospice, Royal British Legion, Kimpton Preschool, the Noise project and we gave contributions to a number of local teenagers enabling them to attend world challenge expeditions. The full audited accounts are published annually in the Parish Magazine.

LOCAL CLUBS, CHARITIES AND ORGANISATIONS SEEKING FINANCIAL SUPPORT FROM THE PROFITS OF THIS YEAR’S FESTIVAL SHOULD CONTACT JOHN HILLS, MAY FESTIVAL CHAIR OR MYSELF WITH DETAILS OF THEIR REQUEST. The committee also manages a welfare fund which can be used by anyone in the parish with a special hardship need. Applications for the welfare fund are handled in strict confidence and should be sent to John or myself.

JURASSIC KIMPTON Come face-to-face with a T-Rex! The Tyrannosaurs are the most incredible creatures you are ever going to come across! Huge, boisterous and jaw droppingly exciting, it really will be an unforgettable experience. They have so much character and are incredibly life like! Join us in the Arena on Saturday!

ETERNAL TAAL An all female, Bhangra drumming and dancing group. The group has performed on some of the world’s biggest stages including the BBC, Bollywood and Glastonbury Festival. Watch them leading the procession and performing later in the arena, where they will combine dhol drumming and dancing with a mix of contemporary and bhangra music.

Procession Road Closure The procession will assemble at the western end of the High Street (east of the Luton Road junction) and proceed to the Recreation Ground leaving at 12.30pm.

In the interests of safety, the High Street will be closed to through traffic from 12pm until approximately 1.30pm.

YOUR 2016 MAY QUEEN Charlotte Hi, I’m Charlotte! I’m 13 years old and currently attend Sir John Lawes School in Harpenden which I really enjoy; before starting SJL I went to Kimpton primary school. I have lived in Kimpton my whole life and have been to every May festival since.

My hobbies include; baking, playing the piano, shopping and spending time with my friends but mostly swimming! I swim 3-4 times a week at Harpenden swimming club. I’ve enjoyed many clubs and activities in the village such as Rainbows, Brownies and Guides as well as going to B.L.A.S.T then Sleepyheadz at Kimpton Church.

I was thrilled to be chosen to be the May Queen this year and I’m excited to spend time with my primary school friends Poppy and Emma.

Fingers crossed the weather is good, I can’t wait to see you all there!

I love the May Festival because it’s a time when the whole village gets together and is one of the highlights of my year.

Emma My name is Emma, I am 13 years old and I currently go to St. George’s School.

I moved to Kimpton from London 51/2 years ago at 7 years old and joined Kimpton Primary School in year 3.

Poppy Hi my name is Poppy and I’m 13 years old.

I go to Roundwood Park School but when I was younger, I went to Kimpton Primary School. I have lived in Kimpton my whole life and I’m probably going to stay in Kimpton for the rest of my life!

My hobbies include reading, meeting up with friends and horse riding. I have a pony called Kimber and she means the world to me.

I was super excited when I was told that I was May Attendant for this years May Festival and I’m going to have so many memories from this amazing experience! I can’t wait to spend the weekend with my friends Emma and Charlotte! And I can’t wait to see you at the May festival either!

I have many hobbies including: music, drama, art, and sport. I started playing the flute in year 4, currently working towards my grade 5. Last September I joined Junior Kimpton Players and recently we performed a pantomime in the village hall. I discovered my love of sport and art at Kimpton Primary School and I have carried on playing netball and enjoying art ever since.

I’ve always loved the May Festival; I think it’s a wonderful part of Kimpton life. My favourite parts of the May Festival are all the events that happen in the arena and all the different stalls.

I like looking around them all and there is always something to do during the day. The one part of the May Festival I always take part in, and look forward to every year, is ‘Kimpton Entertains’ because it’s fun, all the acts are really unique and enjoyable, and everyone encourages everyone else.

Blue Cross pet charity in Kimpton, near Harpenden, has been helping homeless and abandoned pets across Herts, Beds and Bucks since the 1940s. Each year the centre helps over 550 dogs, cats and rabbits find the loving new homes they deserve.
