New Year, new J! Whatever your resolution is, we can help you achieve it at the J – whether it’s spending more time with friends and family or working towards your fitness goals.

We are excited to reenergize the Mayerson JCC this new year. Kicking off 2023, the Jewish and Israeli Film Festival will showcase incredible and inspiring films, from dramas to comedies. Our new J Baby program will offer prenatal classes with a Jewish twist to soon-to-be parents. And we are launching another community-wide Mission to Israel, happening in 2024, which you won’t want to miss.

We also have some new fitness programs like Women and Weights, which teaches how to properly lift weights in a small group setting. As always, there are plenty of classes and activities to keep your children busy and engaged. We cannot wait to see what 2023 brings, and we hope you will join us!

IN JUDAISM

Ancient Mesopotamia was the cradle of some of the richest human civilizations. Emerging gradually as the first monotheistic religion, Judaism often rejected myths and beliefs prevalent in this region. Others, however, were too prevalent to be rejected all together, and were in fact incorporated and integrated into the new and evolving religion and culture.

In this series, we will follow such myths and traditions, echoing through the Bible and in Jewish customs. We will hear from some of the most interesting researchers exploring the overlap between Jewish traditions and regional epochs, read biblical texts in new ways, and identify similar influences shared by other religions in the area.

WINTER PROGRAM GUIDE I 34

Engage at the J

Life was meant for good friends and great adventures.

A lot of milestones and major life decisions often happen in your 20s and 30s. Finding others to go through this part of your journey with can be difficult, and forming new relationships while everyone seems to be at different points in their lives can seem daunting. However, the Young Adult program at the Mayerson JCC wants people in that age group to know they are not alone.

“The Young Adult program creates a community,” said Lulu Gordon, the J’s 20s and 30s engagement professional. “It’s a broad range of ages, with people in different places in their lives. It’s a great way to connect people during all those life-changing moments.”

Gordon started at the J recently and hopes to reinvigorate the Young Adult program through group hangouts and other partnerships. “We’ll have everything from happy hours to educational and professional development events,” she said.

Director of Cultural Arts & Engagement, Frances Kahan, is also excited to see what the future holds for the Young Adult program. “I know Lulu is excited to hop into this

role and plan fun and engaging events,” Kahan said. “Because of COVID, it was difficult to be together, but now we are building back and moving forward.”

As the Mayerson JCC serves as a sort of town square for people in the community, there was an intentional dedication of effort to work with other young adult groups, including ish, Jewish Federation’s YAD, RUACH at Rockdale, and others.

“The focus is to create opportunities for this generation to connect and develop lasting friendships,” Kahan said.

5:30pm | Mayerson JCC

Facilitator: Dr. John Kachoris

Join John Kachoris, MD, Neurologist and stroke expert from Riverhills Neuroscience to learn about signs and symptoms of a stroke, your risk factors and common treatments.

Did you know?

A stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain becomes blocked and cells become oxygen deprived and start to die.

There are more than 795,000 strokes that happen every year in the US. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a person has a stroke every 40 seconds.

A stroke is one of the top causes of death and/or disability in the US.

Falling does not have to be “just a part of aging.” Many things can be done to prevent falls. A Matter of Balance is an award-winning program that emphasizes practical strategies to reduce the fear of falling and gently increase activity levels. Participants meet in small groups once per week for eight weeks, where they learn to view falls as controllable, set realistic goals, change their environment to reduce risk factors, and exercise to increase strength and balance. Register online at www.help4seniors.org or by calling Brittaney Burton at 513.345.8637.
