Autumn is a busy time here at the J! The weather is cooling down, but the events are heating up. Some of our biggest events of the season include the Fall Market, Oy Vey 5K, and Under One Roof. Much like the changing leaves, this fall will be particularly colorful.

The Fall Market is continuing to grow with vendors and food, but this year we have something a little extra. Multicultural artist Siona Benjamin will join us for Chalk the Walk, inviting everyone from any skill level to chalk our walkway with beautiful rangoli art. She will also be with us for the entire weekend as part of her Artist Residency, hosting multiple workshops, lectures, and activities for our community to enjoy.

Do you have a dream? This year’s Under One Roof Sukkot celebration theme focuses on the dreams and visions that move us, and we are encouraging everyone to participate, whether it’s through an art piece or spending an evening at the J enjoying the creativity around you. We hope you find inspiration to make your dreams a reality.

We also hope you continue (or begin) your fitness journey with us. There are some energizing progams to get you out of your comfort zone and feeling healthier. Speaking of fitness, don’t forget to join us for this year’s Oy Vey 5K!

We’ll see you there!

Myths & Holidays in Judaism

Ancient Mesopotamia was the cradle of some of the richest human civilizations. Emerging gradually as the first monotheistic religion, Judaism often rejected myths and beliefs prevalent in this region. Others, however, were too prevalent to be rejected all together, and were in fact incorporated and integrated into the new and evolving religion and culture.

In this series, we will follow such myths and traditions, echoing through the Bible and in Jewish customs. We will hear from some of the most interesting researchers exploring the overlap between Jewish traditions and regional epochs, read biblical texts in new ways, and identify similar influences shared by other religions in the area.

As both athletes and spectators, women—and the innovative and stylish attire they wore—helped break down the barriers that had isolated them from the then male-dominated sporting world. Sporting Fashion is co-organized by the American Federation of Arts and the FIDM Museum at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, Los Angeles.
