Welcome As the new year approaches, we all take time to reflect on the journey we’ve taken, and we look forward to exciting and challenging adventures ahead. We will join you on this new adventure together in 2022 with enriching programs, engaging activities, and educational classes as we bring vibrancy and unity to our wonderful Jewish community. While we know some activities seem to slow down in the winter, at the J, we are just getting started as we encourage you to stay active with our fitness programs. In the new year, we will have a “leveled up” version of Commit to be Fit, tailored just for you. We will also have several Pilates class options to keep you energized and fit. We also have some amazing programs to kick off the new year! Our Jewish and Israeli Film Festival is taking a hybrid approach this year, with both in-person and virtual viewing. And new this winter, we are launching Theatre at the J--children's classes that will make theatre and the creative arts dynamic, interactive, inclusive, and accessible to all. We hope 2022 will be a wonderful experience for our entire community. We’re excited to continue this journey with you, and we can't wait to see you at the J this winter!

VIRTUAL BOOK SERIES

Billy Wilder on Assignment by Noah Isenberg Wednesday, January 12 7 - 8pm I Virtual Before Billy Wilder became the screenwriter and director of iconic films like Sunset Boulevard and Some Like It Hot, he worked as a freelance reporter, first in Vienna and then in Weimar Berlin. Billy Wilder on Assignment brings together more than 50 articles, translated into English for the first time, that Wilder (then known as “Billie”) published in magazines and newspapers between September 1925 and November 1930. From a humorous account of Wilder’s stint as a hired dancing companion in a posh Berlin hotel and his dispatches from the international film scene, to his astute profiles of writers, performers, and political figures, the collection offers fresh insights into the creative mind of one of Hollywood’s most revered writer-directors.

The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz Wednesday, March 9 7 - 8pm I Virtual The Plot, arriving on the heels of Jean Hanff Korelitz’s bestselling novel You Should Have Known (recently adapted on HBO as The Undoing starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant), is  an enticingly smart, propulsive literary thriller about a story too good not to steal, the famehungry writer who steals it, and the vindictive reader who uncovers the truth. ARTS & IDEAS DIE STADT OHNE JUDEN (“The City without Jews”) Monday, February 21 7:30pm | Mayerson JCC Adult: $40 | Youth: $15

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

Ensemble Intercontemporain

Presented with support from the Cincinnati Jewish Bicentennial, CSO Creative Partner Matthias Pintscher conducts Ensemble Intercontemporain in Olga Neuwirth’s newly composed score to accompany Hans Karl Breslauer’s silent film Die Stadt ohne Juden (“The City without Jews”). Released in 1924, the film was intended to be a satire/social commentary on the antisemitic political and cultural movement of the 1920s, but today it serves as a shockingly visionary look at the fear of multiculturalism and the normalization of antisemitism more than a decade before The Holocaust. Neuwirth’s score is an interconnected web of sound and image that draws the audience into a nearly 100-year-old world.

STRONG WOMEN

OF THE BIBLE SERIES Ages 15+ Tuesday, December 7 Wednesday, February 2 Sunday, March 6 Tuesday, April 5 Monday, May 2 Virtual FREE with RSVP

In the entire Jewish Bible (Tanach) only fifty women are mentioned by name, and they “speak” less than 1% of the time. In this series we will re-examine the texts in which women are mentioned and read between the lines for the details of their lives and stories. Focusing on the women of the bible, we will discuss gender roles, female agency and “girl power” and allow a more multi-layered understanding of this early Israelite/Jewish society. In partnership with Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.

6:30 – 8pm | Virtual I FREE with RSVP Our Boys, an HBO limited series which won 14 Israeli Academy Awards, is no doubt a controversial production. Generating strong responses in most viewers, this series provokes deep thinking and much needed discussion. Each month, participants will view two episodes of the HBO limited series. After viewing independently, we will gather as a community via Zoom to engage in a moving conversation around the questions this series raises and forces us to deal with in our society, as Jews and as people. In partnership with Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion and Jewish Federation of Cincinnati.

Caring For Caregivers Series Tuesday, January 11 & Tuesday, March 8 5:30 – 7pm | Mayerson JCC I FREE with RSVP Do you call a parent or loved one more than one time per week at a scheduled time? Do you grocery shop or prepare meals for a parent or loved one? Do you manage finances, schedule doctor appointments or coordinate transportation for a parent or loved one? If so, you are a caregiver. Caring for a loved one can be both one of the most rewarding and challenging experiences in life. Fifty three million Americans provide care to a family member or friend with functional needs or health impairment by assisting with medications, arranging doctor appointments, or helping with daily living activities such as preparing meals. Caregiving can be stressful and lead to personal challenges, whether physical, financial or mental. The Caring for Caregivers series, being offered in partnership with Jewish Hospital Mercy Health, offers lectures and conversation catered to the needs of the caregiver. We will explore helpful tips and resources for finding balance and alleviating stress while navigating care.

Creating Connections

When it comes to getting the Jewish community together and educating our youth about Judaism, PJ Library takes it home–literally. This program sends free Jewish children’s books to the homes of about 850 kids ages 8 and under in Cincinnati each month. And PJ Our Way allows 150 kids ages 9-12 to pick their own Jewish literature each month. The program is a collaboration between local and national funders, as well as day schools and synagogues. The driving force behind this program is to foster knowledge of Jewish customs and traditions, beginning at an early age. Not only are books sent to homes, but socializing in the community is encouraged with monthly programming offered by the Mayerson JCC and community congregations and schools. From ice cream socials to pumpkin picking, children and parents are given the opportunity to form life-long friendships. “PJ Library is an easy, accessible way to bring Judaism into your home to start and grow Jewish traditions for you and your family,” PJ Library Coordinator Marisa Phillips said. Grinspoon Foundation, and local donors like Anne Heldman—with the help of the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati, we are able to provide hundreds of children and families with books for many nights of bedtime reading. “Because of those partnerships, we are able to invite families to attend monthly programming on and off site. Our goal is to create connections and share meaningful experiences as our children grow together.” The Mayerson JCC also works with the community in support of local businesses, including the JCC Fall Market. One of those vendors is Andrew Kartal, beekeeper and the owner of Pure Honey, a local raw honey producer that sells his products at farmers markets and grocery stores around Cincinnati. His honey is not processed and sells well, his only advertising is word of mouth from return customers. The JCC Fall Market is unique not only because it offers goods to help families observe the Jewish New Year, but it also offers a variety of kosher products, including produce from 80 Acres, one of this year’s sponsors. 80 Acres brings the next generation of fresh kosher produce—grown 100% pesticide free at an eco-friendly indoor farm near you. Noah Zelkind from 80 Acres said it is important to him and his family to be engaged in the Jewish community. “We appreciate the work the J does throughout the year and enjoy connecting with people at the Fall Market. We also thought it was quite important to get kosher certification. It puts us in a unique place to share something new and special with the community.”

WINTER PROGRAM GUIDE I 36

These partnerships are critical to serving our community. Because of our collaborations with funders and other organizations, we can fulfill our mission of connecting people so that they can live happier and fuller lives, creating a vibrant Jewish community.
