Welcome As the new year approaches, we all take time to reflect on the journey we’ve taken, and we look forward to exciting and challenging adventures ahead. We will join you on this new adventure together in 2022 with enriching programs, engaging activities, and educational classes as we bring vibrancy and unity to our wonderful Jewish community.

While we know some activities seem to slow down in the winter, at the J, we are just getting started as we encourage you to stay active with our fitness programs.

In the new year, we will have a “leveled up” version of Commit to be Fit, tailored just for you. We will also have several Pilates class options to keep you energized and fit.

We also have some amazing programs to kick off the new year! Our Jewish and Israeli Film Festival is taking a hybrid approach this year, with both in-person and virtual viewing. And new this winter, we are launching Theatre at the J--children's classes that will make theatre and the creative arts dynamic, interactive, inclusive, and accessible to all.

We hope 2022 will be a wonderful experience for our entire community. We’re excited to continue this journey with you, and we can't wait to see you at the J this winter!

Following SOHC’s celebrated annual juried Art Show at the Cincinnati Art Museum, the J will display the works of the first prize winners and pieces created by members from the J’s Fitness and Friends.

Swim Lessons at the J

We offer year-round swim lessons for all ages and abilities. Our aquatics program is designed to teach personal water safety and stroke development. All lessons are taught by certified instructors both private, semi-private, and group options available. Group lessons cannot be prorated, refunded, or made up, due to limited class capacity.

Presented with support from the Cincinnati Jewish Bicentennial, CSO Creative Partner Matthias Pintscher conducts Ensemble Intercontemporain in Olga Neuwirth’s newly composed score to accompany Hans Karl Breslauer’s silent film Die Stadt ohne Juden (“The City without Jews”). Released in 1924, the film was intended to be a satire/social commentary on the antisemitic political and cultural movement of the 1920s, but today it serves as a shockingly visionary look at the fear of multiculturalism and the normalization of antisemitism more than a decade before The Holocaust. Neuwirth’s score is an interconnected web of sound and image that draws the audience into a nearly 100-year-old world.

In the entire Jewish Bible (Tanach) only fifty women are mentioned by name, and they “speak” less than 1% of the time.

In this series we will re-examine the texts in which women are mentioned and read between the lines for the details of their lives and stories. Focusing on the women of the bible, we will discuss gender roles, female agency and “girl power” and allow a more multi-layered understanding of this early Israelite/Jewish society.

After viewing independently, we will gather as a community via Zoom to engage in a moving conversation around the questions this series raises and forces us to deal with in our society, as Jews and as people.

Creating Connections

When it comes to getting the Jewish community together and educating our youth about Judaism, PJ Library takes it home–literally. This program sends free Jewish children’s books to the homes of about 850 kids ages 8 and under in Cincinnati each month. And PJ Our Way allows 150 kids ages 9-12 to pick their own Jewish literature each month. The program is a collaboration between local and national funders, as well as day schools and synagogues. The driving force behind this program is to foster knowledge of Jewish customs and traditions, beginning at an early age. Not only are books sent to homes, but socializing in the community is encouraged with monthly programming offered by the Mayerson JCC and community congregations and schools.

From ice cream socials to pumpkin picking, children and parents are given the opportunity to form life-long friendships.

“PJ Library is an easy, accessible way to bring Judaism into your home to start and grow Jewish traditions for you and your family,” PJ Library Coordinator Marisa Phillips said. Grinspoon Foundation, and local donors like Anne Heldman—with the help of the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati, we are able to provide hundreds of children and families with books for many nights of bedtime reading.

“Because of those partnerships, we are able to invite families to attend monthly programming on and off site. Our goal is to create connections and share meaningful experiences as our children grow together.”

The Mayerson JCC also works with the community in support of local businesses, including the JCC Fall Market.

One of those vendors is Andrew Kartal, beekeeper and the owner of Pure Honey, a local raw honey producer that sells his products at farmers markets and grocery stores around Cincinnati. His honey is not processed and sells well, his only advertising is word of mouth from return customers.

The JCC Fall Market is unique not only because it offers goods to help families observe the Jewish New Year, but it also offers a variety of kosher products, including produce from 80 Acres, one of this year’s sponsors. 80 Acres brings the next generation of fresh kosher produce—grown 100% pesticide free at an eco-friendly indoor farm near you.

Noah Zelkind from 80 Acres said it is important to him and his family to be engaged in the Jewish community.

General Financial Aid The Mayerson JCC offers need-based financial assistance in an effort to make the JCC accessible to everyone.
