Urban Block, Community Centre.

Urban Street Response. Integration within Urban Fabric

Introduction.

Architects: B-architecten

Area : 1800 m²

Year : 2021

Location: Belgium

Function: Community

Role in Community.

Located at an intersection of a southern district of Brussels, the community centre is a multifunctional leisure complex, designed to respond to the needs and interests of the local community through sports and culture.

Architectural Description.

Minimal architectural language of pale stone and large rectilinear translucent glazed openings, the "gateway to the district"

The centre blends harmoniously into the existing fabric by merging with the skyline with a similar rhythm.

Translucent facades of the buildings not only reveal the human activities inside, heightens the sense of engagement, but also creates a reflective effect that livens up the street and induces a better feeling of safety, especially at night,

Public Space and Pedestrian Walkability

Paved public space around the base of the building and staggered building form creates a sheltered area that follows shade and increases comfort of walking pedestrians.

Function.

Private spaces are concentrated around the stairwell so as to not disrupt the radial flow of users moving from space to space.

Programmatic Response.

Compact

Functional units are stacked as compactly as possible, to create a cohesive, efficient cultural and sports complex.

The density of multiple activities creates stimulating and engaging user experiences.

Attracting People with People.

Spaces with the highest level of user engagement and stimulating displays are oriented on the building facade corners to increase the exposure of activities to the general public.

vs Private

Inviting the Outside Inside

The transparency of the main entrance and the local restaurant on the ground floor invites users in as it fosters a welcoming atmosphere and visual connection that draws them in

Courtyard

Designed surrounding the exterior space to create an open void view by creating frame.

Second Floor Plan Third Floor Plan Fourth Floor Plan First Floor Plan

Spatial Response.

Rooftop Terrace

Open public terrace space to host private events elevating traffic upwards, reducing ground floor grains.

Subtle touches on spatial aspects given respects in terms of open/emptiness of space + visual cluster in the foreground.

Windows

Precedent Study.

Urban Block, Tropical Architecture.

Form Geometry.

Employs void space as a catalyst to create the structure of the house with multiple layers of walls for shielding and connecting spaces for wind catch.

H&P Architects transformed the wall facing the street into a single dynamic brise-soleil for modulating sunlight.

Tropical Response.

Natural Ventilation.

Door systems and vegetation help regulate microclimate, thus giving users customized views and blurring the boundaries between inside and outside, architecture and landscape

Skylight

Light visibly streams in from the skylight above, as into the recesses of a cave, creating rays of light that interrupt the darkness created by the absence of side windows.

Spatial Response.

Introduction.

Architects: H&P Architects

Area : 160 m²

Year : 2019

Location: Vietnam

Function: House

Role in Community.

The house levels for specific purposes are randomly connected at different staircase positions so as to create and maintain a "fresh journey of experience" with interesting views and nonrepeatable images.

Architectural Description.

Its design is inspired by light and space effects, which resembles the " cave " style in a humid subtropical climate to bring about positive and vivid experiences to users ’ senses

Tropical cave is introduced as a solution to help awaken to the facing problem, thereby creating a haven for homeowners to again stay in a safe place.‘

Rooftop Garden
