WELCOME This is an exciting time at Cal State Monterey Bay Athletics. CSUMB is a very impressive place. We talk often in the Athletics Department about being Champions – at home, in the classroom, and in our respective venue of competition. I want to thank you for your support. The Otter Backers is the “Team behind the Teams” that provides the much needed scholarship funds and operating dollars that allow our student-athletes the opportunities to attend and compete for CSUMB. Private funding is critical to our success and your attendance tonight shows the value you hold for Otter Athletics and your Otter student-athletes. Our Culture of Success will be built by you - the people who show dedication, passion, and support at all levels. The CSUMB Athletics Department Team - our coaches, student athletes, administration, parents, friends and boosters – will develop this culture as CSUMB Athletics evolves to be academic and athletic leaders in the CCAA and California State University system. Together we can accomplish our goals of academic and athletic success. The Otters will Play Hard, Play Fair, and Play to Win! Winning is central to the core philosophy of athletics. Putting the fine coaches and student-athletes of CSUMB in the best possible position to succeed will be the everyday focus of the Athletic Department. I invite you to “Commit to the Otters” and continue to join us this year to cheer for the CSUMB Otter student-athletes as they strive for victory. This is your chance to see how your support has helped our student-athletes in so many ways. For a listing of upcoming competition dates and times, please visit www.otterathletics.com. Once again, all of us at CSUMB thank you for your attendance and passion for Otter Athletics. Go Otters!

CSU MONTEREY BAY Committed to the success of every student,

Cal State Monterey Bay takes advantage of its intimate overall enrollment of 4,300, small class sizes, and talented teaching faculty to help students achieve big things. The faculty includes an American Book Award winner, four Fulbright Scholars, a MacArthur Fellow, and numerous other grant and award winners. More importantly, because CSUMB emphasizes excellence in instruction, faculty members dedicate themselves to mentoring students. As reported in USA Today, national researchers have recognized CSUMB for “an unshakable focus on student learning...” CSUMB has produced Academy Award winners, thriving entrepreneurs, committed nonprofit and government leaders, and dedicated teachers. Given the university’s commitment to creating access to quality higher education for underserved populations, many of these successful alumni represent the first generation in their families to graduate from college. Founded in 1994 on 1,387 acres of the former Fort Ord, the university offers sophisticated technologies and spacious, modern facilities. Intel Corporation ranks CSUMB 12th among the nation’s campuses for wireless Internet access. The Chapman Science Academic Center opened in 2003 with state-of-the-art science and computer labs, and the $69-million Tanimura & Antle Family Memorial Library, CSUMB’s signature building, opened in 2008. The university has become a highly valued community partner, contributing outstanding events, youth programs, learning resources, jobs, and other economic stimuli to the region. Moreover, the White House honored CSUMB with one of three Presidential Awards recognizing national service leadership as part of the first Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

IN THE COMMUNITY Cal State Monterey Bay Athletics strives to make a meaningful contribution throughout surrounding communities and the entire region. When our student-athletes are not competing or pursuing their academic goals, they often can be found sharing their love and knowledge of their respective sports and participating in positive events and activities on and off campus. CSUMB student-athletes volunteer and serve others in a variety of ways. From visiting and aiding those who are less fortunate to conducting clinics and signing autographs, they strive to make a difference with their efforts and their enthusiasm. This commitment is part of the university’s larger mission of service and community engagement.

Baseball, Men’s Basketball, Women’s Soccer, Women’s Water Polo all got involved in “MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY” by cleaning up fort ord public lands.

PRESIDENT’S CUP 2009 CORRAL DE TIERRA, Calif. - Cal State Monterey Bay Athletics welcomed a full field of golfers to the 13th Annual President’s Cup Golf Tournament at beautiful Corral de Tierra Country Club on Monday, October 5th. It was a great day for the Otters as university staff, coaches, student-athletes, boosters, friends and family gathered for a fun filled round of scramble golf that generated over $30,000 in net proceeds for CSUMB Athletics.

“The support and interest we received for this year’s President’s Cup is very encouraging. Thank you to all who participated in support of the Otters,” said Assistant Athletic Director for Development, Kirby Garry.“We have set a new standard and gained valuable momentum as we continue to make connections in the community that will have a significant impact on the growth of our athletic department.” The day of golf and good times culminated with an awards luncheon highlighted by Director of Athletics, Vince Otoupal, honoring two current athletic scholarship endowment donors. Charlie Franklin was in attendance to meet the Charlotte Franklin Memorial Scholarship Endowment recipient and women’s golfer, Courtney Soekland. This year’s presenting sponsor, Alliance Residential Company, also funds a scholarship endowment for high achieving studentathletes majoring in business and was introduced to this year’s recipient and women’s golfer, Cicilia Chudivan. “We are thankful for the generous support and vision of donors like Charlie and Susie Franklin and Jim Krohn at Alliance Residential Company,” said Otoupal. “Scholarships are critical to the success of our sport programs and an area where we are far short of our CCAA peers. We will continue to call on and ask others to follow the lead of the Franklins and Alliance Residential in making an investment that has great impact on the student-athlete experience at CSUMB.” Otoupal capped the day by handing out high-fives and awards to the team, contest and raffle winners from this year’s President’s Cup Golf Tournament. David Liskin, Anthony Valdez, Karl Morgan and Ryan Salmonson were awarded low gross honors while John Owen, Mario Persicone, David Hernandez and Vale Galvan took home the low net team award. “A special thanks to our all of our sponsors, especially presenting sponsor Alliance Residential Company, for their continued support of Otter Athletics,” said Otoupal. “David Webb, Gerry Greenfield and the Corral staff were great hosts and we look forward to building on the success of this year and making it bigger and better next year.”
