From Teacher to Farmer : Haji Muhammad Akram’s Inspiring Journey

Haji Muhammad Akram’s journey began with an unconventional dream. The apple orchard had always been his refuge, a place where he sought solace among apple blossoms and the whispering wind. At an age when many contemplate retirement, he decided to embark on a new adventure.

Haji Muhammad Akram’s dedication had led him to PAFAID, where he absorbed knowledge like a eager student. The project offered training on good hygiene practices, proper pruning, fertilization techniques, and modern packaging standards. With newfound wisdom, he nurtured

a thriving orchard, bearing larger, vibrant apples with rich flavors.

As he plunged into the world of apple farming, his sons were initially bewildered by their father, a retired teacher, pruning and fertilizing apple trees, and learning innovative packaging techniques. Haji Muhammad Akram chuckled, recalling their skepticism. “They didn’t believe in my dream initially, they said I was crazy cutting down perfectly good trees” he said, “but when they witnessed the transformation in our orchard, they were astounded.”

Yet, in 2022, the devastating floods in Pakistan struck his orchard, threatening to undo all his efforts. The flood damage was disheartening, but Haji Muhammad Akram remained resolute.

Armed with the soil and water management knowledge acquired from PAFAID, he set out to rebuild.

His young grandson, Waheed Ullah, became his apprentice, learning about apples, resilience, and the boundless potential of dreams, even at 65.

Today, Haji Muhammad Akram’s orchard stands as a testament to passion, knowledge, and the ability to bounce back from adversity. His story is not just about him, but about a brighter future.

A Recipe for Empowerment: The Mother Daughter Duo’s Journey with PAFAID 19-year-old Arooba and her supportive mother, Nazish, have embarked on a life-changing journey that would not only transform their destiny but also breathe new life into the meat value chain of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This heartwarming tale of food safety and female empowerment is a beacon of hope, proudly supported by the JICAfunded UNIDO project, PAFAID. For Arooba, the dream of a home-owned food business was her guiding star. She had a passion for cooking since a young age and always wanted to cook for others “We have huge gatherings at home, Eid parties and dinners. I always wanted to cook for people just like my mom and try out new recipes.” Amber shared. She started cooking at home as a hobby but quickly realized she

wanted to turn it into a full-time business. With her mother as her anchor and a huge interest in her food from friends and family Arooba and Nazish started “Khandani Zaika” (The family taste). However, there was much to learn.

“I heard about UNIDO’s project where they were supporting women entrepreneurs, training and connecting them with relevant food departments.

This was exactly what we needed” recalled Nazish who enrolled in the program and attended all the training sessions through PAFAID’s initiatives and learned about the importance of food safety and hygiene, about E-marketing and value addition to products. Values she then taught Arooba at home that they were determined to uphold. “We wanted our food to not only be delicious but also safe,” Arooba emphasized.

Arooba’s culinary prowess soon gained recognition. She used locally sourced, topquality meat, ensuring safety from farm to table.

As word of her mouthwatering dishes spread, customers came from near and far. The success of their business became a testament to their commitment to food safety.

But Arooba and Nazish’s ambitions didn’t stop there. Inspired by their journey and the principles of PAFAID, they launched a YouTube channel.

Here, Arooba created recipe videos that not only tantalized taste buds but also incorporated vital messages on food safety. “I wanted to reach more people, to teach them that safe and delicious food can go hand in hand,” Arooba said.

With PAFAID’s training and support the mother daughter duo have become an integral part of the revitalized meat value chain. Arooba and Nazish have become role models, proving that women could excel even in traditionally maledominated fields.

Sisters Cultivate Prosperity: A Tale of Transformation in Balochistan Yousaf Kach is a small killi (village) 3 km away from the main Pishin city with approximately 200 families residing, farming remains the main source of livelihood and sustenance for most of them. In this picturesque district of Baluchistan, where rugged mountains meet vast plains, a story of resilience and empowerment unfolds.

Two sisters, Abida and Arifa, have embarked on a journey to transform their family and village’s agricultural practices with the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) funded UNIDO’s Project for Agri-Food and AgroIndustry Development Assistance (PAFAID).

Armed with newfound knowledge from the training, Abida and Arifa set out to transform their family’s farmland. They convinced their brothers and implemented water-conserving practices such as drip irrigation, minimizing water wastage and ensuring optimal plant hydration.

They also made sure that everyone who worked on the farm adopted safe farming methods.

Cooking Up Resilience: Shaista’s Tale of Triumph In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, when many faced uncertainty and economic hardship, Shaista, a resilient mother of three, embarked on a journey of empowerment and entrepreneurship that not only sustained her family but also inspired her community.

Living in the heart of Abbottabad, Pakistan, Shaista’s family faced financial challenges exacerbated by the pandemic. Her husband’s income had dwindled, and the future looked uncertain. With no sign of income in sight, she decided to take matters into her own hands.

“My son’s semester fee was due and we had no money, I asked for help from some people but it was to no avail. At the time my son Moaz was working part- time as a delivery boy for Food Panda and that was our only source of income

and he gave me the idea to start working as a home chef for Food Panda too.” Shaista shared, her eyes reflecting her struggle and her unwavering determination.

The Pesticide Quality Control & Research Lab, a humble establishment that plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and efficacy of agricultural pesticides, has undergone a remarkable upgrade thanks

Located in Quetta, the lab had long been the only cornerstone of the local farming community. Over the years, it had faced numerous challenges, including outdated equipment, insufficient facilities, and limited resources. However, a glimmer of hope appeared when UNIDO and JICA, renowned for their commitment to sustainable development, recognized the potential impact of a modernized lab on the region’s agricultural practices.

Under UNIDO’s Project for agri-food and agroindustry development assistance (PAFAID) funded by JICA, a team of experts arrived to assess the lab’s needs and developed a comprehensive plan for its transformation. This encompassed the complete overhaul of the lab, including capacity building of the staff, acquiring state-ofthe-art equipment, and implementing advanced

testing and research methodologies. The primary objective was to enhance the lab’s capacity to ensure the safety, quality, and efficiency of pesticides used in agricultural practices.

Sadaf Afsar, the only female chemist who has been working with the lab since it was established in 2005, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to witness this extraordinary change. With a sparkle in her eyes, she shared her vision for the lab’s future. “We aim to become a center of excellence in pesticide quality control and research, not just in our region, but throughout the country, and I hope that more women join us along the way” she proclaimed.

As the project progressed, the lab witnessed a buzz of activity. The transformation unfolded before the eyes of the staff members, who were eager to embrace the possibilities that awaited them. Upgraded workstations, cutting-edge analytical instruments, and improved laboratory conditions breathed new life into their daily routines.

Talking about the impact of these efforts, Tahir Tajik, Deputy Director at the lab said “Due to lack of equipment and resources our lab had been at a dead halt for some time. We had to send every sample that came in for testing to labs in Karachi or Lahore, which took at least a month to send back reports. However, now since the upgradation, we are testing 3-4 samples simultaneously and testing time has been reduced to just a week”.

Haji Nazr Gul, a devoted butcher and the General Secretary of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Beef Association, is a true trailblazer in his field. His remarkable journey, fueled by his dedication to the trade and his community, was greatly magnified through the UNIDO’s JICA-funded Project for Agri-food and Agro-industry Development Assistance (PAFAID), which aimed to rejuvenate the meat value chain in the region.

Haji Nazr Gul, has been a butcher for decades.

His tiny shop was a cornerstone of the local meat market. But beneath the humble exterior, his dreams were grand. “I always wanted to provide the best meat to my customers, but I knew we could do better,” he confided.

With a determination to elevate the standards of meat production in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Haji Nazr Gul seized the opportunity presented

by PAFAID. He enrolled in their comprehensive training programs on good hygiene practices and food safety standards, hoping to understand how to transform his shop.

“The knowledge I gained through PAFAID was a game-changer,” he said with gratitude in his eyes. “I learned about international standards, which opened my eyes to the vast potential of our local meat market.”

“One thing that does not discriminate is, poverty.”

Tanzil stated, remembering the overnight turn in their financial situation after a business loss.

Tanzil’s family had hit a rough patch, grappling with a financial crisis that threatened their future. In the face of adversity, Tanzil made a pledge to herself: she would not compromise on her children’s education, come what may. With this unwavering determination, she decided to explore avenues that would not only support her family but also ensure her children’s bright future.

Fueled by encouragement from her friends, Tanzil envisioned a small-scale commercial kitchen that could cater to the local demand for delicious and hygienic meat products. She knew she had the culinary skills, but her kitchen was ill-equipped for commercial production.

“My struggles are not unique, many women in our society are facing similar issues. They want to earn, provide and support their families. I just hope I can encourage and support them like my friends encouraged me and PAFAID supported me.”

With limited resources, she embarked on the challenging task of building her dream kitchen that she named “ The Ultimate Kitchen”.

However, her journey was fraught with difficulties.

Tanzil struggled to keep her business afloat due to the unavailability of proper equipment and a lack of market linkage and support for female processors. The odds were stacked against her, but her determination never wavered.

It was during these trying times that Tanzil learned about the UNIDO’s PAFAID project, which aimed to empower individuals in the meat value chain. She enrolled in their training programs,

received guidance on marketing strategies and connecting with potential customers and suppliers. “I wanted to ensure that my customers could have complete trust in the meat they bought from my shop,”
