Licensing Source Book. Publishing business magazines in any sector is a privilege, but the art and design arena really makes this a creative, colourful privilege. This is a sector that straddles both traditional, trusted imagery with modern lifestyle design, graphic art, photography and contemporary creation. The number of pages in this issue never seem enough to cover the world’s latest slate, but we are fortunate to give you an inspiring lightbox into what’s new for 2016 and beyond. This publication previews a whole host of exhibitions, from the infamous Surtex in New York, to Licensing Expo in Las Vegas – right through to London based shows, including Brand Licensing Europe, and the world’s largest greeting card show – PG Live. Elsewhere in this issue we’ve been lucky enough to grab time with Four Corners art collective – a collection of artists from – you guessed it – four corners of the world, who are exhibiting as a collaboration for the first time in New York. We also caught up with Heather Flynn for an insight into her Alice Scott alter ego, plus take a view from 6 different product licensees – and what inspires them in their current ranges. You’ll also have the chance to see what’s new with the ever-prolific Bright Group, never standing still for more than the time it takes to walk you though its ever expanding portfolio. The Art & Design LSB team will be present at all of the aforementioned exhibitions, and look forward to seeing you here, there and everywhere!

Works Of Art A new merger and diverse collaborations are making it an exciting time in the corporate licensing world. Little House Of Hackney Is Unveiled A collaboration between the V&A and House of Hackney has recently launched. The iconic interiors brand presents Little House of Hackney, a collection of interior and fashion products for children, including two striking new patterns transformed from artworks by C.F.A. Voysey in the V&A’s collection. Traditional hand-smocked dresses and bonnets, wallpaper, bed linen, furnishing fabric and ceramics feature his whimsical Alice in Wonderland characters and botanical print, Voysey’s Garden. Left: Little House of Hackney is the latest brand collaboration from the V&A.

Celebrating Five Years 2016 sees Yellow House Art Licensing, known for the strong graphic artists and art brands it represents, celebrating its fifth anniversary. "We are happy to have such wonderful artists to work with and were pleased to welcome on board key art brands Cressida Bell and Hello Marine recently, along with new artist Catherine Rowe," say directors Sue Batmen and Jehane Boden Spiers.

New Signings Over the past 12 months, MGL has been busy signing exciting new artists to its books. These include award-winning painter Russell Cobane, whose portfolio includes landscapes, wildlife and bird paintings, and who already enjoys a successful licensing programme across many product categories. Neeti Goswami has also joined MGL, whose meticulously designed line drawings, inspired by the Indian art of the Mandala, have attracted great interest from licensees in the publishing and stationery sectors. In addition, the work of Valentina Harper is now available in North America through MGL, which says that Valentina’s signature style of intricate designs and inspirational messages has attracted a loyal fan base. A successful licensing programme includes bedding, toys, colouring books, calendars and stationery.

Packets To Pages Thelwell Equestrian Art Gallops into the US NewTack Strategies, the North American licensing agent for the artwork of Norman Thelwell, has signed an agreement with The Lucky Horse Co. for a range of decorative horseshoe art for the home décor, souvenir and country-western gift markets. The initial product range features color reproductions of Thelwell’s iconic cartoons with funny captions. Additional licensing opportunities are available in stationery, gift, tabletop, apparel, promotional and veterinary products. Above: Decorative horseshoe art featuring Norman Thelwell is heading to the US market.

The latest project for Bright Art Licensing success story Laura Hughes saw the multitalented artist taking her brand-driven illustrations into publishing. The new deal came about thanks to some clever thinking from publisher Bloomsbury, who had seen Laura's cute characters across the 2015 Waitrose Easter range. "Bloomsbury thought the characters would work really well as a book," said Laura, "and wrote a new text to fit the preexisting illustrations." Laura, who also designed the front cover of the 2014 A&D LSB, has another book - Goodnight Tiger - out in April with Little Tiger Press, and is working with Faber & Faber on the follow-up to 2015's Daddy's Sandwich. Above: We’re Going on an Egg Hunt was the first book title from Laura Hughes.

Website Launch

Two Agencies Became One

Pure Illustration, which has been licensing artwork for greetings cards and other gift products for the past 10 years, unveiled its new website in March. "We have already seen a huge increase in the number of potential new customers finding us online," says owner Richard Patey. "The market has changed a lot over the past 10 years, but we are seeing an exciting growth in art licensing for other products, especially packaging, book publishing and editorial." Recent licences include biscuit tin packaging, an Italian fashion magazine and the packaging for a scented candle from a major European brand.

The Buffalo Works and Suzanne Cruise Creative Services have joined to become one larger, full service licensing agency, with the collaboration benefitting their collective base of licensed artists and strengthening the brands they represent. “We feel this union utilises the breadth of our combined experience to further benefit the clients we represent," say Joanne and Suzanne, who have both been in the industry for over 25 years. "The Buffalo Works will be able to focus more fully on the branding and product development, while SCCS, Inc. will continue to focus on traditional art licensing opportunities. This will allow for even more licensing success for all of the amazing clients we now collectively represent.” The respective licensing agencies are focused primarily in the art suzanne cruise licensing segment.

Royal Mint Collaborates With Bridgeman Bridgeman Images continue to work with heritage brands to mark defining moments in British history. The 350th anniversary of the Great Fire of London is commemorated by the Royal Mint licensing a 17th century woodcut from the Bridgeman archive showing flames rising high over the London skyline for their £2 collectable coin. Two Ansada Signings Ansada is proud to fanfare two new signings, Adam Grimm and Guy Combes. Multi-award winning Adam Grimm is among the artists featured in the 2016 documentary The Million Dollar Duck, recently picked up by LionsGate and Animal Planet. His work is highly detailed and living the rural life gives Adam access to plenty of inspiration and material for new work. Guy Combes’ artwork, meanwhile, brings the viewer into the environment and atmosphere that is Africa and reflects his love of the country and her wildlife. Ansada has also launched a new website featuring larger images, better searchability and a new improved wish list feature. Below left: The King's Realm by Adam Grimm. n The Frame From new in-house brands and art collectives to animals dressed to impress, photographic licensing opportunities are a growing sector.

History Repeats Itself Mary Evans Picture Library is launching a new range of patterns created in-house using content from its extensive archive. Incorporating all kinds of vintage objects and curiosities, from bowler hats and beehives to teapots and steam engines, the History Repeats Itself brand draws from the Library’s rich collections, which include everything from children’s books to Victorian trade catalogues. Quirky and eclectic, the Mary Evans History Repeats Itself range can be applied to a variety of products from stationery and fashion accessories to textiles and wallpaper. Bespoke Manipulations

parts of Well known for wildlife, pet and scenic images, one of the fastest growing cards, Ardea’s image licensing business has been manipulated images for greetings by dressing calendars and merchandise. Stemming from a desire not to stress animals inthem up, Ardea has built up a collection of manipulated images. The company's house designers are now offering bespoke tweaks to existing manipulated images so that clients can mix and match props, animals and colours among others. Right: The image on the right shows the changes Ardea made for one the company's clients. (Photo credit: John Daniels/Ardea).

Artists' Collective Dot & Flow Design is a quirky, talented group of licensed artists who thrive on creating fresh new surface designs for licensing and sale. The company's collective portfolio is brimming with cute characters, lush lettering and an array of patterns. Among the collective's talented artists is Natalie Williamson whose company, Natalie Williamson Designs, has launched a bright, bold new collection of surface pattern designs and lettering to brighten up a wide range of products. "With delicious colour combinations and a fun youthful vibe, the new designs are perfect for the fabrics and stationery market alike," states Natalie. Also part of Dot & Flow Design are Betsey Anne Hodson, Egle Petrauskaite, Natasha Kirby, Sareka Unique, Hollie McManus, Adrienne Vita and Metka Hiti.

In Black And White Retro photography is continuing to tick a number of boxes for Yellow House clients, from pure nostalgia to retro humour, useful for many market areas, from greeting cards to table top and from wall-art to toiletries. Other news from Yellow House is that Glasgow Museums, represented by the company, has a strong collection of Charles Rennie Mackintosh work available to licence. There will be a big focus on the artist’s work in 2018 as it will be the 150th anniversary of his birth. The Museums also has an impressive collection covering fine art such as Cezanne, Degas, Monet and Salvador Dali as well as decorative arts. Stunning Japanese papers have recently been attracting attention and have been licensed onto postcard books, calendars and giftwrap books. Below and right: Japanese papers from Glasgow Museums.

Perfect Pictorials Graphic designs continue to span a wide spectrum, with both print and online playing an important role. Target audiences include wholesale framers, interior decorators, frame shops, hotels, retailers and licensees selling decorative arts. In addition to the monthly catalogue featuring its new releases, GoodARTS displays images in an innovative, intriguing way exploring trends and the artists who create the exclusive Bon Art collection. “Our first issue is around 25 pages. Currently the magazine is free to our clients and available as a marketing tool to our customers worldwide,” explained Brett Bonnist, who is heading up the Bon Art team. The magazine aims to educate customers on industry trends, inventive ways to display artwork, as well as the artists behind the paint brush. The company says that this is the first digital publication of its kind and a new form of marketing the wide spectrum of design services that Bon Art offers.

The designs that lend themselves well to repeat are available to licence for other products, especially tableware and stationery.

Abbey Road Fine Art and Licensing is a new division of Penny Lane Fine Publishing. The team boasts experience of over 30 years in publishing and licensing, combining the artistic talents of an interior design team. Licencing Across Europe Spring marked the publication of Julien Cheng's new board books Hurry Up (Depeche-toi!) and Don't Move (Ne bouge pas!) showcasing Julien's stylised black animals. Licensing opportunities are available in baby décor and baby accessories categories. I Like Paper, the Berlin-based accessories brand, has also added several of Julien's animal characters to their artist's collection with Happy Hoppster, The Lion Doesn't Sleep Tonight and Flamingo Party featured on their collection of Pappwatches, wallets and as a paper necklace. Additionally, APLI, a Spanish toy and crafts manufacturer, with distribution throughout Europe, has produced a twopiece puzzle game with a musical instrument theme, and a dominoes game with Julien's baby animals that encourages counting. Tokidoki Makes Its Mark Tokidoki has welcomed a new series of partners. The brand was launched last year with Boots in seasonal gifting, through SLG on cosmetics, Topshop on nightwear and underwear, and also on stationery through Blueprint in Primark. "We have just launched apparel into Primark on both adult ladies, through BCI, and older girls, through Smith & Brooks," explained We Are Bloom’s Libby Grant. "Primark has already repeat ordered with all of these suppliers, and we have confirmed orders on hosiery, through Roy Lowe, footwear, through Fashion UK, and greeting cards and wrapping paper through International Greetings. We also launched into ASOS in April through BCI." Added Libby: "The Latte pencil case was biggest selling pencil case in Primark, ever."

UK Magazine Deal Two new art brands from licensing agency This is Iris will feature in popular preschool magazines Get Busy and Cute from May. Activity pages for both properties will feature throughout the year, with licensees Wow Beanbags and Robert Frederick providing winners with exclusive prizes. In addition, hot on the heels of the success of last year's launch of Thread, drawn by Tina Crawford, the greeting card range has now been exclusively branded for Oxfam UK. Elsewhere, Flame Tree Publishing has extended its Catalina Estrada offering. Products including Mini Wall Calendars and Year Planners, which will showcase work of the Colombian illustrator.

Four Corners, Two Shows Six international artists - among them Beth Schneider from the USA, Kevin Brackley and Jocelyn Proust from Australia, and Emma McGowan from the UK - have aptly named themselves Four Corners Art, and will be getting together for the first time on American soil at New York's Surtex in May to showcase their work. Two other group members will be exhibiting at the Blue Print Show, also being held in New York during May. Involving a total round trip of 48,214 miles, and some early morning phone calls, the enterprising designer have successfully coordinated everything across different time zones, as A&D LSB discovered. he Four Corners may sound like a funky pop group! However, the name actually represents a new, international collective of surface pattern designers who are creating fresh, modern patterns available to licence and buy. The seven founding members, who are based in the US, UK, Australia and France, have been enjoying some fantastic successes since launching in November last year,

including securing licences with Guildery, Minted, Aladdin and Padblocks. Beth Schneider, Emma McGowan, Jocelyn Proust and Kevin Brackley will be making their debut at Surtex, taking place from May 15-17, while Pippa Shaw and Julie Anson will be exhibiting at New York's Blue Print from May 12-16. The seventh member of the group, Glasgow-based Jane Kirkpatrick, was the first to kick off a year of trade shows for the collective when she exhibited at Premiere Vision Paris in February. An interesting twist is that Beth, Emma, Jocelyn and Kevin will be meeting "in real life" as Beth explains, for the very first time at Surtex. "It's been a fun challenge to co-ordinate everything across different time zones," Jocelyn observes. "The Australian contingent has had some very early morning phone calls!" she laughs. "We've been in contact for months over the details of our booth which we really want to stand out from the crowd so

that it conveys the variety of work that we're offering." Although some members of the collective have met before in Paris, Glasgow, Bath and Sydney, "coming together in New York is the ultimate blind date!" quips Emma. "We're thrilled

Creating A Blue Print The third Blue Print Show takes place at the Metropolitan Suite on the 2nd floor of the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York from May 12-16, showcasing the talents of some of the best designers from around the world. Situated in an exciting part of Manhattan, the show is well-known to regular artwork buyers. After winning the Blue Print Young Designer Competition, Four Corners artist Pippa Shaw will be making the journey from Aix-en-Provence in rural France to exhibit at the show, showcasing a portfolio of florals, organics, birds, animals, vegetables and other botanicals in extensive collections that are ideal for the stationery, quilting, home décor and textile markets. UK manufacturer, Padblocks, recently licensed one of Pippa’s collections for a range of home accessories to include decorative chalk and corkboards, magnetic notepads, sticky notes and memo blocks. Also at Blue Print this year will be another Four Corners artist Julie Anson, from Inverkip in Scotland, who has just been signed to Cinnamon Joe Studio, with her extensive portfolio of energetic, bold and colourful illustrations and patterns available at the Cinnamon Joe booth throughout the show. Julie, who lives and works on the west coast of Scotland, uses lino cut and other print making techniques to create fun and funky designs suitable for adult and children’s markets.

to make sure we're always thinking about how our patterns will help clients sell more products." As you would expect, each member of the group has their own distinctive signature style. Between them, they’ll be showing over 500 repeat and placement patterns, including on trend florals, geometrics, character and seasonal designs suitable for the bolt fabric, apparel, home décor, gift, paper, packaging and stationery markets. individual designs, which are available for licence and sale, covering a wide range of themes and occasions. Already successful individually, the designers have worked in a range of industries for a roster of clients to include well-known brands such as Nikon, Crane & Co., PayPal, Procter & Gamble, Shutterfly and Warner Bros. So what will each designer be bringing to the table? Australian artist Kevin Brackley's exciting portfolio features crisp geometrics and fluid organics. "My experience as a former visual merchandiser and graphic designer taught me the importance of telling a powerful visual story with a product knowledge that I now bring to surface pattern - where I create designs that compel customers to look, touch and buy," he states. growing fan base for her bold graphic prints and patterns. The Australianbased artist specialises in strong, contemporary florals and geometrics and is currently working with several home décor companies on a range of new collections. "A signature collection with a major US textile studio is also in the pipeline," Jocelyn confirms. Based in Chicago, Beth Schneider's designs are currently available on home décor, housewares and stationery via retailers Minted, Guildery, Kleinfeld Paper and PaperStyle. "Products include sophisticated florals and hand drawn geometrics with bold colours that are available on pillows, drapes, lampshades, wallpaper, ottomans, wall art, stationery and fabric by the yard," Beth confirms. Jetting in from the UK will be illustrator and surface pattern designer Emma McGowan who lives in the English seaside resort of Brighton where she creates luxurious, laid back illustrations and patterns for stationery, packaging, gift and paper products. "I'm travelling to Surtex with a portfolio packed with dramatic florals, vintageinspired prints, and cool characters which are available to licence and buy," she enthuses. As Beth puts it: "We want to welcome as many people as possible to our booth - 229 - so that we can really show them how those early morning planning calls worked out." Surtex 2016

On the road to Surtex Inset: Surtex is a great opportunity for artists, art agents, licensing agencies and licensors to connect with manufacturers and retailers.

Over May 15-17 more than 200 professional artists will gather at Surtex in New York to introduce their designs to buyers and manufacturers from around the world. Now in its 30th year, Surtex is still the premier marketplace for sourcing original art and design. A&D LSB takes a look at who’s coming this year. or 30 years Surtex has been the goto event for artists, art agents, licensing agencies and licensors to connect with manufacturers and retailers to create the next best-selling products in every category imaginable. Every year over 5,500 buyers and manufacturers from 49 countries converge on the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City to seek out the very best original art and design being created today. More than 200 artists from around the world will be exhibiting at Surtex and are split into three areas, making it easy for visitors to find their way around. The largest section by far, and the heart of Surtex is the art and brand licensing area, with artists, designers, agencies, brands exhibiting over 1,000 creative works available for licence. This year there are 84 artists exhibiting for the first time in this section.

F

A relatively new section, Atelier, is dedicated to exhibitors selling surface designs for a multitude of product categories. This year there are 55 exhibitors covering a broad range of categories – interior textiles, fashion fabrics, wall coverings, paper, and more. New this year is the design district, featuring 27 emerging artists never seen before. The design district is exclusively for individual artist studios that are firsttime exhibitors. As well as the opportunity to discover

new artists and artwork, Surtex also gives attendees the chance to learn more about the industry with its growing conference programme. The seminars are designed to provide designers, manufacturers, retailers and others in the field with practical ‘how to’ advice on the sales process from creation, to product development to retail placement. “This 30th annual edition of Surtex promises to be the best yet in terms of art and design offerings, as well as education and networking,” says Liz Crawford, vice president and group show director.“This is a must-not-miss event for artists looking to bring new art to market and for product developers and retailers looking to license original art or design for use in the manufacturing of everything from home goods, bedding, to fashion fabrics and textiles to toys and giftware.” Art&Design Licensing Source Book 25

This year visitors can see collections focused on men and boys, as well as humour.

ART FOCUS: Bright Art Licensing

The Personal Touch Boutique art licensing agency Bright Art Licensing leads the field in matching fabulous design with top level licensees. But at the heart of Bright's success is its relationship with its artists, as senior art licensing agent Hannah Curtis explained. modern, forward-thinking agency, Bright Art Licensing is a dedicated division of Bright Group International and is a market leader across both the UK and US art licensing markets. Bright Group International also comprises a literary agency, a children's

illustration agency and an advertising/branding agency. It is wellknown for pushing creative boundaries; not least with its most recent project, the art gallery, design studio and retail outlet The Bright Emporium, which launched last year to great acclaim. "Working across so many different sectors means that we are able to cast our net much wider and offer both artists and licensees a whole new set of options," Hannah explains. "Artists know that because of all the different

36 Art&Design Licensing Source Book

areas we touch, we can ensure their portfolio has more visibility than standard art licensing agencies. Equally, licensees know we can give them access to artists from other specialities who might be a great fit for their brief." With 200 talented illustrators and designers already on its books, Bright Art Licensing normally takes on around ten artists each year, but is on track to exceed that for 2016. "It's already been a very successful year for us," says Hannah. "We have some great new names on board and we're really excited about what they'll be bringing to Bright, as well as what we can do for them." This is where the secret to Bright's success really lies; in ensuring that it makes the most of the myriad of talents and styles its artists have to offer. "We take our artists' needs very seriously," Hannah continues. "They are the single most important thing about Bright Art Licensing, and we make sure that they know that!" Right: 'Battersea In Bloom' will feature works by Clair Bremner – the talented artist behind this year's fabulous cover of A&D LSB.

Above: Hannah Curtis, senior art licensing agent.

Hannah recommends that artists looking for a licensing agency choose carefully. "It's like entering into any relationship," she explains, "it has to work for both of you and certain needs have to be met. Key things to look for include how your work fits with the existing portfolio, how the contract is set out and how happy the other artists are." Art licensing agencies can be as varied and different as the individuals they represent, and Hannah emphasises the importance of making sure they are the right fit. Artists need to bear in mind where they ultimately want to go with their work, and how the agency would be able to help them achieve that.

London On Show A combined retail outlet, gallery space and design studio, The Bright Emporium offers a new way of making art accessible to the consumer, bridging the gap between artists and their audience. The latest exhibition, 'Battersea In Bloom', will showcase artworks featuring a number of different London scenes. Running from June to September, the exhibition will include limited edition prints and other products for sale.

ART FOCUS: Bright Art Licensing

"We always meet with new artists before we begin working with them," Hannah continues. "We'll show them the gallery space, talk to them about their needs and what they want from their future career path. It's absolutely crucial that they know us and trust us to look after their livelihood." Artists should also be assured that their portfolio will stand apart from anything else within the agency. "We need to offer different options to what we already have," explains Hannah, "otherwise we're competing against ourselves. Having said that, the artists' style and designs need to fit with our overall client base so that we know we can find them work. But each person needs to stand out as an individual; that's so important, for us and for them." If everything else has gone according to plan then the next logical stage is to look at the contract being offered. Bright Art Licensing uses an Association of Illustrators-approved contract, and Hannah recommends that artists refrain from signing contracts which haven't met these standards (Bright md Vicki Willden-Lebrecht is on the board). "We strive for fairness for artists, both within Bright and within the AOI, and firmly believe that artists should own the IP and copyright of everything that they create." Not seeing artists as a commodity means that the Bright team works closely with them to develop their individual style, making sure their work is commercially viable. "We are constantly feeding artists colour themes, mood boards and other ideas to keep things as fresh as possible," says Hannah. "So their work is always moving forward and keeping track with current trends and fashions." Licensees will also send in briefs and wish lists, which Bright passes on to the artists, who are then free to pitch as they desire. "It's entirely up to the artist," Hannah explains, "which

means that they can be as proactive as they like!" Three years ago, Bright Art Licensing launched illustrator Lindsey Sagar's portfolio at London-based trade show PG Live. At the time, Lindsay had just begun her freelance career and was primarily working in the greeting card

A Family Affair "Bright has so much more to offer artists than other Ian Gillibrand agents. The communication is great, there are no false promises, just straightforward honest advice and a close family feel. Being freelance can be very rewarding, until you are sat on your own with no support. Bright is very good at that personal support which often gets missed working from home; it's those little things that make a big difference." Ian Gillibrand, artist

market - now she has a children's books range (with Igloo Books), which is on sale at supermarkets across the UK. "We had a constant dialogue with Lindsey," explains Hannah, "and have been helping her develop her work to

make it more desirable in the marketplace. By helping to focus the artists' attention and talent we make sure that their work is more likely to find success." One of Bright's newest signings is Ian Gillibrand. Despite only joining Bright in April, his latest collection has already had an excellent response, with card publisher Noel Tatt snapping up four designs the same day they were launched to trade. "Ian's work was excellent but very traditional," said Hannah, "so we worked on making it more exciting and contemporary. It's still very much his work, with a little injection of freshness and some commercial input. We're delighted with the result!" The final key to Bright's success is the importance it places on attending trade shows, with PG Live, Spring Fair and Surtex proving invaluable in giving an overview of the market. "Staying in contact with our clients and the wider industry is essential," says Hannah. "We can then feed back to our artists and help them understand what the market is looking for. It all goes full circle!"

Left: Ian Gillibrand's work has taken a more commercial turn and been an immediate success.

Art of the ndustry As the middle ground between artistic talent and high street retail, licensees have some tough but enjoyable decisions to make when selecting the next art or design resource to work with. Art & Design LSB asked a selection of key licensees what inspires them, and what recent signing has coloured their life happy. Nick Adsett, group product director at The Great British Card Company: “We have recently signed a deal to publish three ranges for the uber-talented writer/illustrator Jess Grant. The first two ranges from Jess feature Animals and then Flowers, with her third Coloured Joys range containing her great sketched art, accompanied by words of wisdom and sage advice such as “drink wine, dance like a lunatic and remember how WONDERFUL you are”

and "DREAMS… Chase them, believe in them, Live them.” All three ranges will be debuted at PG Live in London. Jess says “Amidst the chaos of this funny old world, these cards come to you full of joy, love, courage and a sprinkling of MAGIC! Believe in these cards but most of all, believe in you.” What outside influences do you use to get ideas of styles that would work well for your particular product? "Pinterest! I seriously couldn't live without it these days. It's a continuously updated resource that allows me to look at influences and trends from around the world, and from every single genre. It's invaluable.

I’ve currently got 41 different boards, ranging from a fascination in all things Steampunk to Flowers & Fruits, Animals, and Lettering/Quotes and we all share them across the studio. It’s revolutionised the way we work." Dan Graham, editorial director at Top That Publishing: “There’s a lot of nostalgia in both the publishing world and in the world of licensing at the moment. The artwork style that was chosen for our new Learning Journeys range of books strikes a perfect balance between retro styling and bright, vibrant colours that appeal to today’s children – it’s definitely one of my favourite Top That styles to emerge in recent years. Olive May Green (real name Steph Hinton) is the talented artist responsible and she’s great to work with, which is a big factor when you decide to commission a large amount of artwork that will be rolled out across a range. I also love Sally Garland’s art style at the moment. We published her book Tig and Tog last year and I’m thrilled to say that a second book featuring her illustrations, This Is My Pet, will be published later this year.” What outside influences do you use to get ideas of styles that would work well for your particular product? “I think it’s healthy to have a diverse range of outside influences when you’re a creative. Alongside book publishing, I’m often inspired by product ranges from gift, toy and greetings card industries, but can equally be inspired by a walk down the food aisle in a supermarket. You also can’t ignore the power of social media as there are so many good creative platforms and forums from which you can gain inspiration, share ideas, and source brilliant art and craft contributors. Our new forthcoming Make and Create range of craft titles (Lolly Stick Craft shown) features lots of new crafters whom we contacted after viewing their pins on Pinterest, for example.

Emily Kleinman, art director at Gallison / Mudpuppy: “I'm quite proud to have worked with designer and illustrator Brad Woodard of Brave

the Woods. His graphic and modern style was the perfect fit for the bold look I was looking to achieve with our new Glow in the Dark Puzzle line. The artwork translated beautifully to one colour in glowing ink and looks amazing in the dark.

Above: The make and create range of craft lines is due for launch soon.

What outside influences do you use to get ideas of styles that would work well for your particular product? “I often look to children's books to find inspiration for art styles that may work for our toys, puzzles, and games. We work with artists from all over the world, so I always seek out book stores when travelling to discover talent that I may not have seen before. Home décor items such as wall art and bedding designs also spark fresh ideas. Being based in New York City, I am very fortunate to have many world-class art and design museums accessible to me whenever I need an extra dose of inspiration! “ Left and above: The Glow in the Dark Puzzle line has a bold look, and a graphic and modern style.

Dan Grant, Senior Licensing Manager, Danilo Promotions "Danilo is excited to have signed the design brand Happy Jackson created by Giles Andrea and Heather Flynn. The Happy Jackson brand has seen great success across gifting and greetings which encouraged us to sign the licence for calendars. The brand has a combination of bright, vibrant colour ways combined with fun, playful captions that appeal to all age groups and work really well for calendars. We have had very strong interest at retail with the Happy Jackson calendar and expect that it will see great success when it hits retail later this year." What outside influences do you use to get ideas of styles that would work well for your particular product? "There are a number of things we take into account when creating new calendar ranges. We are regularly attending trade shows and exhibitions as well as keeping up to speed with what is happening at retail. Social media is becoming an increasingly important source of influence as it allows you understand consumers directly in terms of what is trending through sites such as Pinterest and Twitter. One of the most important ways of creating appealing design on products is to make sure we are listening to our retail partners who are closest to their shoppers and know what is working and also what is being asked for. Alongside this, the licensors are also a key source of design inspiration and it is essential that we build strong relationships with them to utilise the wealth of artwork that they have, which is generally inspired by the upcoming design trends." Above: Danilo has recently signed design brand Happy Jackson.

Helen Shield, director of marketing at Enesco "We are very proud of our Gund Peter Rabbit Plush Collection. Having had a Beatrix Potter licence for almost 30 years we were delighted when we were given the opportunity to create a plush range based on Beatrix Potters original artwork. Creating a more classic collection which appeals to the global Beatrix Potter fan, but also made of materials that

"We recently signed Beatrice Tinarelli to create a new board game for little kids called “Friends and Neighbors – The Helping Game”. Beatrice brought just the right warm, sweet quality to the images we were looking for, something that both the child and parent could identify with. It turned out looking fantastic!" What outside influences do you use to get ideas of styles that would work well for your particular product? "I look everywhere for inspiration – kids’ books, clothing, toys, food packaging, illustration directories, agency sites, seasonal products, Instagram… you name it. I also get post cards almost daily from artists. It is often a fun surprise to see who might work well for our kids’ products! Above: Friends and Neighbors is a new board game for little kids.

are equally at home in a baby’s nursery. It is not easy to create a product which crosses both markets. Our 150th Anniversary Limited Edition Peter Rabbit sold out in less than four months." What outside influences do you use to get ideas of styles that would work well for your particular product? "Our product development team looked at popular fabric styles, size and, of course, price point. This collection sells well in department store, independent gift and card shops. We needed a product which worked well in all retail environments." Left: The Gund 150th Anniversary Limited Edition Peter Rabbit sold out in under four months.

Good Greetings! Now in its eighth year, dedicated greeting card trade show PG Live 2016 brings the creative world of greeting cards to life. From fine art watercolour paintings to bold modern designs, the greeting card market is one of the most natural partners for commercial art and design. In fact, for many artists and designers, a greeting card range marks their first tentative step into the wider world of

It's the perfect way to test out the commercial viability of an artist's style – and if retailers (and consumers!) like them, then it's relatively simple to expand on that initial collection. For others, the cards themselves are the end goal, but a successful range can quickly create consumer demand for related goods. impressive and eclectic gallery for two days from May 10-11, 2016. While many publishers embrace licensing, the natural home for artists and designers is the Artists' Quarter, which is proudly displayed at the front of the show. It plays home to a friendly group of talented artists, creative designers and knowledgeable agents such as Bright Art Licensing, which represents hundreds of talented artists, with a portfolio spanning all genres. Showcasing a wide variety of styles and influences, the Artists’ Quarter sees exhibitors presenting their latest designs to publishers and licensees alike. Portfolios are packed to the brim with fantastic new creations, each one available to buy or licence. A&D LSB asked some of exhibitors to reveal what they’ll be unveiling at the show and they were delighted to share their exciting plans. Amy Charlotte (Stand 156) is a London-based luxury greetings card designer selling artwork licences, including trend graphics, characters, textile and print design.“I will be selling a diverse range of greetings cards and art licences at PG Live,” Amy commented, “and it will be a chance for customers to get the first look at new ranges, view artworks exclusively on show at PG Live and get inspired by trenddriven graphics and illustrations before the rest of the market.” Right: Fox and Guelder Rose is just one of the pieces from Yellow House’s new artist, Catherine Rowe.

Amy's work often entails whimsical or sentimental ideas with a touch of humour, while her print design is often trend-led as she has experience in fashion trend forecasting.“I will be able to provide consultations on new trends in the fashion and textile industry,” Amy continued,“and my designs are Left: Just One Blackbird, Acrylic on Hardboard, is part of a series of 12 from David Lyon. available for all types of licensing.” Pallavi Prakash (Stand 158) is an artist specialising in floral designs inspired by nature and landscapes, working in mixed media, such as watercolour, gouache and design software like Photoshop and Illustrator.“My designs are unique, colourful and vibrant,” Pallavi said.“They are mainly showcased on greeting cards, but have the potential to be used very effectively elsewhere as well.” Pallavi will be showcasing her adaptable designs across various products on her stand at the show, allowing retailers, industry buyers and licensees to view her products from a licensing perspective. David Lyon (Stand 160) is an artist inspired by organic shapes and the natural

form. His favoured media are acrylic, ink and charcoal, which he uses to interpret his expressive sketchbook studies to create his paintings and drawings. “I am aware that my creativity is part of a process,” David explained. “My art is a product of that process. It starts with something that catches my attention, (maybe from reading, listening to music or just looking); an object, colour or idea, figurative or abstract, that engages my imagination.” He continued; “Ideas wax and wane but my creativity has always defined the person I am from childhood. It makes me aware that the process is ongoing. That my art is a product of that process.” All David's art is available to buy and licence. Yellow House Art Licensing (Stand 136) is a dynamic UK art licensing company with a growing reputation, representing established artists, leading brands, and rising stars. Jehane Boden Spiers and Sue Bateman founded Yellow House in 2011. “We are excited to be exhibiting at PG Live again this year,” commented Jehane.“After first launching our agency at PG Live in 2012, we are absolutely thrilled to be celebrating our fifth year in business at PG 2016! With a keen eye for new talent, we are delighted to be introducing a new rising star at the show, the artist Catherine Rowe.” Yellow House is well-known for offering a carefully curated collection of artists, growing artists’ reputations, and bringing new brands to market. Its key attention to detail, a creative eye and focus on quality is testament to its unique vision. Good art is made to be seen and enjoyed; good commercial art is made to be seen, bought, given and enjoyed. And with so many exhibitors at this year's show, PG Live 2016 is the ideal hunting ground for anyone looking for artistic inspiration and great design. Art&Design Licensing Source Book 53

The Flying Flynn ack in 2002, a new award category Most Promising Young Designer or Artist was introduced into The Henries, the internationally renowned greeting card awards. With a smile as broad as the stage a young textile graduate went up to collect that inaugural trophy. Heather Flynn might have showed ‘promise’ back then, but through the Alice Scott and Happy Jackson brands,

she has even more cause to smile now with the growing licensing programmes for both lifestyle design concepts. In fact Happy Jackson made it into the finals of the Brand & Lifestyle Licensing Awards 2016, both for its licensing programme and for a range of toiletries developed by licensee H&A for Boots. Taking a trip back down memory lane, Heather recalls:“It was 2001 and I had graduated in printed textiles and had every intention to look for a job in fabric design. There I was at the New Designers show when I Above: The simply stylish appearance of Alice Jackson which appears on cards, stationery, mugs and tins through licensees. It's 15 years since Heather Flynn graduated in printed textiles with every intention of looking for a job in fabric design. But when a major greeting card publisher approached her at the graduate New Designers show where she was exhibiting, it was the catalyst that was to change her career path that has led her to become the creator and co-creator of the Alice Scott and Happy Jackson design lifestyle brands that are making their presence felt across all manner of consumer products. Art & Design LSB met up with Heather and her alter ego Alice Scott. was approached by UK Greetings and asked if I would like to go for an interview about designing greeting cards. While I had never considered greeting cards as a option, I couldn’t see any reason not to at least go for the interview – and started a three-month placement!” She then took up an opportunity to move to Hallmark, another major greeting card company. Though she didn’t know it at the time, Heather’s first week there was rather significant as she was introduced to Giles Andreae, the creator of Purple Ronnie (which Hallmark was publishing under licence) and they worked together on Art&Design Licensing Source Book 55

Happy Heather Heather Flynn shares some of her lessons in life as well as her fave raves. What advice would you give to young ‘Heathers’? “I would tell them to go into greeting cards. I would tell them that being ‘commercial’ is not a dirty word. I would say be confident in your ideas, but be willing to comprise sometimes.” Your personal motto? “I am a terrible procrastinator so I try and adopt a ‘Get it down, get it out’ mantra to try and hurry myself to make a decision.” What’s your guilty pleasure? “Fish fingers, chips and peas.”

developing specific bespoke card designs for retailers. Although Heather became captivated by designing cards – “appreciating the very special and complex relationship between the design and words, the sender and receiver” – four years go, she took the bold decision to stride out on her own creative path. “I had been designing cards for 10 years by then and wanted to see if I could design any other products that featured my own brands. I tentatively met up with Giles and asked him for his advice. As ever, he was wonderful, positive and supportive and planted a seed that we should do something together,” says Heather. A few months down the line and with a lunch date looming with Giles to discuss progressing a loose idea for a colourful brand (with a working title of Jackson Jones), Heather spent two frantic evenings working up some rough concepts. “And that was how Happy Jackson came into being,” said Heather. Armed with a few sample ideas of how the

concept could be translated onto products, Heather and Giles visited the Spring Fair. “Giles showed it to gift company Wild & Wolf and they immediately got the joyous, exuberant, fun essence of the brand which is so evident in how they have helped us to drive the brand,” explains Heather. With the broad range of products now

from Penny Kennedy, tins from Elite, a range of toiletries in Boots through H&A, and a strong following on social media, Happy Jackson is continuing to go from strength to strength. Vickie O'Malley of Rockpool Licensing has been appointed specifically to develop the apparel category, which will be another area of exposure for Happy Jackson. "From the beginning, I felt pretty confident the brand had a great look and concept, but the speed it's grown at has been quite a surprise," she states. "We work across such a broad range of categories now, and I certainly didn't imagine I'd be designing chocolates in the morning and lip balms in the afternoon when we first started out!" While Happy Jackson takes up a hefty chunk of Heather’s time, she balances this with her other main design focus, her alter ego, Alice Scott, which Heather creates and drives entirely herself. “I decided against using my own name and Alice Scott just popped into my head – she sounds Scottish, which I am too of course. I love the fact that I switch off Happy Jackson and go into Alice Scott mode,” reveals Heather. While there is a continuity within Alice Scott, mainly black and white artwork, (albeit with a quirky touch of neon pink here or there), there is a diversity of tone within the designs. With the Alice Scott range scooping a Henries award last October for licensee Pigment and the giftwrap collection licensed with Penny Kennedy also making the finals, plus mugs through McLaggan Smith, Portico set to launch stationery, gift and calendars in January, as well as Simson Cards publishing cards in Australia and New Zealand, Heather’s alter ego is making her presence felt. So, what’s next in this ‘Most Promising Young Designer’s’ sights? “I do have another idea for a brand up my sleeve – this time more surface pattern based, ironically going back to where I started all those years ago!” recognises Heather. Licensing Expo: Las Vegas

A thriving and vital part of the show f loor, the Art & Design Zone at Licensing Expo is a diverse and innovative space. From photographic specialists, through to fine art, classic line drawings, performance art and the growth area of colouring book art, there will be a variety of styles on show. Art & Design LSB finds out more.

Above: Licensing Expo offers art and design exhibitors the chance to catch up with both domestic and international partners.

American Art Story he art and design section of Licensing Expo – the world’s biggest licensing show, which this year runs from June 21-23 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, Las Vegas - has been steadily growing over the years. Indeed, it is a thriving part of the show floor, as Jessica Blue, svp Licensing Expo, explains: “Each year, I look forward to walking the Art & Design Zone to see the innovative displays and cutting edge designs from our art and design exhibitors. “You will always see something new and different in this area and our attendees love the diversity of the imagery showcased.” The zone highlights a mix of contemporary and traditional imagery, with exhibitors and brands represented including Jim Benton, Sean Danconia, Jenny Foster, Joan Marie Art, JQ Licensing, JD Shultz Artwork and Timothy Raines Studios among others. This year, the zone will offer an assortment of features including a live painting demonstration by Robert

Holton from drizzle studios and performance art by Stephen Fishwick (represented by Get Down Art) who will be painting to live music several times a day. The zone will also be supported by the Expo’s Matchmaking service – the new online platform which allows attendees and exhibitors to arrange key meetings in advance of the show. In addition, new artists are given the chance to step into the spotlight, thanks to the New Artists Launchpad initiative. New artists featured this year include Bottled Joy Creations, Mr Baron Gordon, Paper Nest Dolls, RiverLights Originals and Cat Create anew thing, among others. For the exhibitors, Licensing Expo gives them a great chance to connect with both domestic and international customers, as well as prospecting for potential partners. Kristen Barthelman, vp of licensing at Art Brand Studios comments: “At last year’s Expo, we

announced our new partnership with artist Marjolein Bastin to great success. With the traffic and visibility at the show, there is really no better place to grow our brands and licensing representation portfolio.” Leslie Brewin, president of Art Makers International, concurs: “Each year, we look forward to reconnecting with our global and US licensing partners and creating new ones, while helping manufacturers find success with a variety of art to meet their design needs.” Left: You will always see something new and different in the Art & Design zone, says Licensing Expo’s svp Jessica Blue.
