n the mouth of the Tapi river, lays a city that sparkles with a glint of solitaires and weaves its mystical past in the yarns of fine silk. Surat is the first destination, SpiceJet has started after public demand through facebook. Surat is country’s diamond and textile hub and the city also boasts of a varied heritage.Surat, being the second largest city in Gujarat and ninth largest city in India has been a prominent mark on the country’s economic map. It takes pride in being home to major gems cutting and processing industry with 90 per cent of the world’s diamonds go under the hammer to getting their best cut and brilliance here. The city of Surat has proved its heroism on numerous occasions in history, by surviving frequent invasions of power-briddled rulers and even widespread epidemic of bubonic plague.

Diamond harbour Known by myriad names like – Silk City, Green City and Diamond City, Surat is fast emerging as a big player in the global diamond industry. It is said that around the world, 8 out of 10 diamonds on the market are cut and polished in Surat. This industry help India earn about $10 billion in annual exports. A legacy of old Dutch trade links, it began after a Surti entrepreneur returned from East Africa bringing diamond cutters. Since then, the rough diamonds come to Surat as rough crystals ripped out mainly from deep under the earth of South Africa and other regions of the continent, and go from here as smooth gems to Antwerp, Belgium where the international diamond trade is run mainly by Hasidic Jews and Jains from Palanpur in north Gujarat.

Heritage City As I was passing through the lanes of this quite city, I was often reminded of Surat’s legacy through the rich remnants. The Dutch and the Portuguese apart from the British had established there business centres in Surat. In past, the city was a glorious port with ships of more than 84 countries anchored at its harbour at all time. Fast becoming a travellers’ paradise, Surat has a lot to offer in terms of food, sight-seeing and

shopping. The tempting Surati cuisine can make your taste buds tingle with delight pushing you to explore the city’s streets and corners and try mouth-watering delicacies like ‘Ghari’, ‘Khaman’, ‘Locho’ , ‘Rotlo’ and ‘Undiyo’. A visit to Tapi river banks for a unique dish called ‘Ponk’ is an experience to rejoice. Non-vegetarians can visit a few good restaurants in the old city area which serve traditional fish and other non-vegetarian dishes. Indeed a food lover’s paradise! Surat is a year-round destination, with moderate summers and pleasant winters. However, the best time to visit is between October and March.

Quick notes • Shopping: Other than gold

and diamond jewellery, sarees and textile. There are entire malls dedicated to just textiles. Apart from these, you can also buy traditional Gujarati fabrics, artifacts and souvenirs.

Delicacies: Ghari, Khaman, Locho, Rotlo and Undiyo are few of the mouth watering offerings of Surat. A unique fish dish called Ponk is a must try.

Excursions: Tourists can also visit Saputara, a hill station in the Sahyadri hills at an altitude of 1,140 metres above sea level and just 170 km from Surat.

One can also plan a day’s visit to Navsari, which takes one hour travel from Surat to witness the headquarters of the Parsi community.

Glimpses from the past Surat finds a significant mention in the annals of history starting from Mahabharata. Today however, the city is well frequented by traders and tourists alike. The major tourist attraction of the city is Surat Castle, which was built in the 16th century by Muhammad Tughlak. Another famous castle is River Side Castle, built by the Sultan of Gujarat in 1546 and is located on the shores of river Tapi. Apart from forts, there are other places of interest like the ancient Dutch gardens, the Dutch cemetery and Makaipul. One must visit the centuries old original Surat port from where the ships sailed to other parts of

the world in the days of yore. The Sardar Patel Museum, originally the Winchester Museum established in 1898, has on display a wide range of artifacts and relics narrating the rich cultural past of Surat. Even as I was visiting one place after the other in my short trip to Surat, the history strewn city awed me to the fullest. From the Bristish era to India’s Independence, Surat has always been a part of history. Places like Dandi and Bardoli famously known as the venues for the Salt Satyagraha and the Farmers’ Movement during the Indian Independence all fall under the Surat region. The city also houses the ancient Chintamani Jain Temple, which was constructed during the rule of the Mughal Emperor, Aurangzeb, in 1699 A.D. and is known for its wooden craftsmanship, murals and drawings done with vegetable dyes. The

tour of the city remains incomplete without a visit to this temple which is very popular among the locals. In addition, the Ambika Niketan Temple and Swaminarayan Temple are some of the other popular religious attractions of Surat. Another popular picnic spots not to be given a miss is Choppati or the Jawaharlal Nehru Gardens. Surat also has a long coastline of 45 kilometres with a number of beaches to explore. Dumas beach is a popular spot among locals while Tithal beach is 108 km away.Suvali, just 28 kms away, has two wells with water rich in iron and sulphur and the beach here is fringed by feathery Casurina trees.

Srinagar, the capital city of ‘paradise on earth’, captivates you with its exclusive charm…

Once in Srinagar, you will have a plethora of beautiful options to explore. There is no better way to start your expedition than Mughal Gardens. Situated on the outskirts of the city, Mughal Gardens boast of lush terraced lawns, gushing fountains and a panoramic view of the beautiful Dal Lake. Beauty in abundance lies at three elaborate and different gardens – Chashmeshahi, Nishat and Shalimar. Historians believe Mughal emperor Jehangir built the garden area for his beloved wife Noor Jehan. Situated on the banks of Dal Lake with pristine backdrop of Zabarwan Mountains, Nishat Bagh gives you a magnificent view of the lake and flowerbeds, while Shalimar Bagh and Chashmeshahi add substance to the melange of colours emerging at this breathtaking setting. Mughal Gardens are a favourite among tourists and local natives. Explore the blossoming of flowers or breath-in the morning freshness or do some picnic at the park.

Fast Track the first floor of the Auquaf Building at Dal Gate, towards the end of The Boulevard, the Kashmir Shawl Museum is the right place to buy authentic Pashmina shawls. Available in lovely colours and patterns, you can pick some jamavaars, coloured and embroidered Pashminas for your loved ones. Priced decently, the only hitch is that they do not bargain, but you will cherish this piece for long.

Lounge in Houseboats The day is coming to an end, but no sweat. Srinagar gives you myriad options to luxuriously laze and enjoy in the city. You must have heard about Kashmiri houseboats on Dal and Nagin Lake, why not take this chance as an opportunity and stay at one of these beautiful stationary boats, anchored on the banks of Dal and Nagin lakes. A stay at one of these houseboats endows you with luxury and may transport you to the times when Mughals called this place (Kashmir) heavenly. You can access these houseboats either by road, or by a short Shikara ride. Each houseboat usually has 2-5 bedrooms plus bathroom, dining room, living room, upper deck, which is considered good for those who like sunbathing.

Calling everyone to visit Gulbarga, a city seeped in history with a unique amalgamation of Hindu and Muslim cultures...

G

ulbarga, a unique synthesis of two cultures is filled with beautiful palaces, mosques, stately building and bazaars. The place is home to Khwaja Bande Nawaz, tomb of the great Sufi saint, Khwaja Syed Mohammad Gesu Daraz, Sultan Hasan’s tomb, the mausoleum of Feroze Shah, and the shrine of Shri Sharanabasaveshwara. On a recent visit to this land of cultures, I confess the choice was made after I emphatically stated to my family, “Religious harmony among its people combined with culture should be our destination focus.” If you don’t know much about Gulbarga it is interesting to know that

the city was primarily a Hindu city before the Muslim conquest. When Bahman Shah ascended the throne of Daulatabad, he chose Gulbarga as his capital. The name Gulbarga comes from the Kannada word Kaliburgi that means ‘the stony land’. The city was called Kalburgi in the middle age. A mirror to the past of Karnataka, the city during the Bahmani regime, under the influence of Persian, became Gulbarga. ‘Gul’ means flower and ‘barga’ means leaf in Persian.

Spiritual conquest Our first stop was the Dargah Hazrath Khwaja Bandanawaz Gesudaraz. We took an auto

Even from a distance it was visible with its majestic white distinct architecture. It is one of South India’s holiest Muslim shrines. Saint Hazrath Khwaja Bandanawaz Gesudaraz, who was the saint of the Chishti order was one who taught love and looked upon everyone as equal. The dargah is a large area that encompasses mausoleums, madrassas, a mosque and rest houses. Even after 600 years, it strives to maintain the atmosphere that its khanqah (monastery) was always known for. There are plenty of anecdotes about the dargah. We were told once when someone tried to take the silver salver that was placed in one of the mausoleums it miraculously wafted to the ceiling and is fixed here even today. The ceiling itself has been done up with colour

mirrors and reminds one of the sheesh mahals with their glittering glass pieces. Gulbarga sees an extra influx of tourists during the annual Urs festival that is held in December. A mela where stalls line the road leading to the Dargah are a shopping delight. Everything from toys, accessories, rides for kids to shops selling various religious items, jewellery, handicraft items, household knick knacks, snacks and clothes are sold here. From the dargah we proceeded to the Sharanabasaveshwar Appan hudi (temple). Also known as SB temple, the temple is based on Indo-sarasnic style of architecture and the yearly 10-day yatra sees lakhs of pilgrims paying their obeisance to Lord Sharanabasaveshwar. The lingayat saint of the 18th century taught the union of the human soul with the almighty through six steps, popularly known Stata Stala. Discipline, simple living, universal brotherhood, non-violence were philosophies advocated

by him. From here we headed to the Buddha Vihara that inspires moral living even in present day world.

Buddhist circuit The Dalai Lama inaugurated the stupa in January 2009. The Vihara is spread over 75 acres of land and rises sixty feet above ground level. The serene sitting Buddha statue is the biggest sitting Buddha statue in South India, weighing 400 kgs and made of panchaloha with a gold coating. It is one of the few Buddha idols with two of his earliest disciples Anand and Kashyap offering their obeisance. Well-known sculptors of Bangkok sculpted the idol and it was brought to India and installed on the occasion of Vijaya Dasami, also the day on which Emperor Ashoka embraced Buddhism. In the Vihara premises, the 12-feet high bronze statute of Dr Ambedkar along with 10 followers is also impressive. After paying obeisance at these religious sites,

our tummy feeling neglected began to display signs of rumbling and hunger. The biryani cooked in earthen clay pots was delicious and our stomach thanked us heartily for the treat we provided it. Another popular dish is haleem, a stew made of mutton, cashew, pounded wheat, garlic paste and spices that are cooked on a low flame for almost eight hours, stirring all the while so that the haleem is properly cooked and the lower layer is not burnt. It is served with a garnishing of coriander and fried onions. Kebabs and cutlets are also commonly offered at restaurants in Gulbarga. If you are fond of mughlai cuisine, the city will not disappoint you. For vegetarians who would like to sample south Indian fare, Gulbarga has a number of Kamat restaurants offering the same. For those with a sweet tooth, there is a sweet meat known as Mama ki Puri which is the city’s speciality. After having a bite we understood why. The sweet is basically a khoya filling with a fried maida coating over it. The brown khoya is so fresh that the sweet melts in the mouth and you can’t stop at one piece.

Date with history Resuming our sightseeing, our next stop was the Gulbarga Fort that used to be a magnificent structure with 13 towers and 26 guns. Today it is dilapidated though the Jamma Masjid, built on the lines of the great Mosque of Cardova of Spain is still a splendid sight to behold. The Masjid built in 1367, to commemorate Gulbaraga’s status, as the capital is one of the earliest mosques in South India, and the only one without an open courtyard. Originally built

by Raja Gulchand and later fortified by Ala-uddin Bahman, the fort with its moat transports you to Gulbarga’s glorious past, when kingdoms fell and others rose from their ashes. You can also see the science centre and the lake in front of it. There is a muslim shrine every few kilometers in the city and each one has its own story to tell. For those who wish to meditate, the Aurobindo Dhyana Mandir at Om Nagar provides an ideal setting in its domed sanctum. They also conduct yoga classes. The annual kite flying competition held in January is when creativity, profusion of colour and shrieks of joy light up the sky. On the eastern side are located the Haft Gumbaz or seven domes. These are mausoleums of the Bahmani dynasty. Though the tombs are imposing from the inside, no one can enter them, as they are kept locked so that was a bit of a disappointment for us. For shopping one can buy saris with zari work done on them, salwar kameezes with heavy embroidery and traditional jewellery studded with stones and beads at extremely reasonable prices. If you have time in your hand, you can travel 40 kms from Gulbarga in a private taxi or a bus to visit famous pilgrimage centre of Sri Sadguru Dattareya. Gangapur is one of the most famous Dattatreya Peethas and is associated with Sri Narasimha Sarasvati Swami, an incarnation of Lord Dattareya. Over all, the city of Gulbarga has a lot to offer.

eautiful state of Uttarakhand is known for its panoramic exquisiteness. If you are based in Delhi, you mostly think of Uttarakhand for a weekend escape. This time, my visit to the tranquil region of Tehri Garhwal was special. To celebrate our first wedding anniversary, my husband chose the pristine region of Tehri. I was looking forward to a laidback and relaxing holiday, so we chucked conventional holiday destinations like Nanital and headed towards offbeat destinations in Tehri. But, unfortunately, the trip began with a misadventure. We almost missed the morning Shatabdi to Dehra. A huge

corporate group spoiled all my plans of catching a nap in the train. Like school children, the group laughed, sang, danced and played cards leaving me exasperated. After a loud five-hour journey, we finally disembarked the train to meet a huge traffic jam in Dehra. Traffic moved at a snail’s speed and after an hour of struggle, we finally headed hillwards. The moment my husband told me that we will be staying at one of the best resorts in the region, I was excited to the tee. I called a friend who told me the resort is the best place for a relaxed holiday.

sides. As our car chugged in ahead towards Mussoorie, a thought about versatile author Ruskin Bond crossed my mind. Most of his books are set around Mussoorie and Dehra. At Mussoorie, thick jungle dotted the winding ghat roads. The three-hour drive from Dehra to Kanatal via Dhanaulti was scenic and consequently verdant valleys and lofty mountains welcomed us. I suddenly woke with a start only to find us in the middle of a thick jungle. Our driver, a local from Tehri told me, “Words fall short to describe the scenic splendor of Tehri, a beautiful region home to the prestigious Tehri Dam. Tehri Dam, apparently came into shape after a hard work of 35 years. Vast expanse of thick forests and verdant step farms welcomed us at Dhanaulti. High altitude, separated from the trees falling in line, clouds kissing hills made the landscape beautiful. Perched amidst virgin forests of deodar, rhododendron and oak, Dhanaulti welcomed us with its peaceful atmosphere and tranquil location. Situated just 25 km from Mussoorie, Dhanaulti is an ideal summer getaway. Long wooded slopes, cool weather, fantastic view of lofty Himalayas, caressing breeze makes Dhanaulti a perfect destination for a relaxed holiday. After clicking hundreds of pictures, we

We took a stroll in the park and a guide made us watch some exotic species of birds like Rosy Finch, Yellow Billed Blue Magpie, White Tailed Stonechat, Black Bulbul besides the Great Himalayan Barbet.

Eco-chic destination Dhanaulti is also home to Surkanda Devi temple, which attracts swarms of pilgrims and tourists. On our way to Kanatal, we saw huge queues of devotees who had assembled to visit the temple. A new bride with a big nath (nose ring) walked hand in hand with her husband. Our driver informed us a lot of newly weds and devotees throng the temple. After our spiritual sojourn and a quick darshan, we headed towards our hotel. We were left with no option and had to return. Back at the resort, we relaxed and were treated with an authentic Italian meal. Drinks, Italian meal and bonfire, I thought what a great way to celebrate first wedding anniversary. Next day began early in the morning with a stunning sunrise from behind the Himalayan peaks. Colours changed every minute and birds chirped from all directions. After a sumptuous outdoor breakfast, we took another walk in the woods. Prime attraction of this wondrous retreat lies in the Tehri Dam. On the way, a huge market greeted us. Shops selling utensils, woolens, ornaments, fruits and a Shahid Bhagat Singh Smarak told us we’ve reached Chamba. The town of Chamba is dotted with lush hills, gurgling streams and unsullied expanse of greens. We crossed Chamba and headed towards Tehri Dam. The minute I got off the car, a whiff of clean mountain air greeted me.

Walking in the woods After a quick tea session, we decided to see the place. We asked the resort people who told us there is an eco park bang opposite the resort gate. We shelled out Rs 20 per head and entered the Eco Park. Birds chirped from all kinds of bushes, plants, vines, creepers, trees that grew effortlessly. From the park, we could clearly see two prime Himalayan peaks of Tehri – Nanda Devi and Trishul. At a hill station, walking in the woods can be a therapeutic experience. We took a stroll in the woods

We were at Tehri Dam. A huge expanse of shiny emerald waters with a thick boundary of hills was in front of me. The huge lake, formed by the dam, is one of the most picturesque spots I have ever been to. The area near Tehri Dam is called New Tehri, which is also the district headquarters of Tehri Garhwal. The dam is a multi-purpose rock and earth filled embankment on the Bhagirathi (another name of Ganges). We stopped at the dam for an hour or so and witnessed a masterpiece. After clicking a dozen pictures, we got into a jetty, which took us from one corner of the lake to the other. Anyone would love boating in this picturesque lake. Back at the resort, my husband gave me a surprise – a spa therapy at the Rasayana Spa at the resort. This trip made my anniversary an experience of a lifetime that both my partner and me will cherish for long.

If there is one herb that can add colour to your dish and spice it up at the same time, then it’s got to be paprika...

Each SpiceJet aircraft has been named after a particular spice. In the section ‘Spice Trail’, we bring you the history and usage of each of these spices.

n interesting Hungarian proverb says, ‘One man may yearn for fame, another for wealth, but everyone yearns for paprika goulash’. Now that makes the herb so desirable! As far as its etymology is concerned, well the word paprika is derived from the Hungarian ‘paprika’ or the Serbian word ‘paprika’. They both interestingly refer to bell pepper or chilli pepper which is commonly referred to as Capsicum. The Hungarian paprika is, however, the granular version of the dried pepper and sounds quite similar to the Latin ‘piper’ or modern Greek ‘piperi’. It’s original saga can be traced back to the 19th century. It is interesting to note that many European languages too use a similar word. In fact the Japanese refer to the same as ‘papurika’. While the variety of paprika varies from country to country, this herb is most popularly used across the world for seasoning and garnishing dishes. The flavour can change from mild to pungent or hot and the colour too can get bright orange-red going up to intense and deep blood red. True to the place of its origin, the Hungarian paprika is considered by far the best amongst them all and is saved for the sizzling delicacies.

3-4 tbs. Olive oil 2 cups chopped onion 2 cloves crushed garlic 2 cups chopped, peeled sweet potatoes/ vegetables

1 tsp. tumeric 1 tsp. basil 1 tsp. salt dash of cinnamon 1 bay leaf

Paprika can also be used in the homespun ritual of applying henna or mehendi to the hair, which is popular in India Tangy delight Not many people know that in the United States, paprika is most popularly sprinkled on food items in order to garnish, but with an interesting twist. With the aim on making the flavour even more intense and the delicacy even more sizzling, paprika is heated gently in oil. The preparation of rice, stews, and soups, as well as that of sausages or meats require a great deal of paprika flavouring. The Spanish Paprika (Pimentón) is available in almost three versions such as mild (Pimentón Dulce), moderately spicy (Pimentón Agridulce), and very spicy (Pimentón Picante.) In fact there is a very unique Spanish paprika apart from Pimentón de la Vera that has a distinct smoky flavour and aroma due to the fact that it is dried by smoking over the rare

oak wood. Netherlands is a major production and distribution source of paprika that is ecofriendly too and is being cultivated especially at the greenhouses. However, when it comes to the exotic Moroccan cuisine, the paprika which is hailed as ‘tahmira’, is usually found slightly moistened by the addition of a small amount of olive oil blended into it. Thanks to the natural colouring agent that it is, Paprika can also be used in the home-spun ritual of applying henna or mehendi to the hair, which is so popular in India. The addition of this herb will enable to achieve a rare reddish tint to the hair. Hence, it is better than the harmful chemicals that can dry out or damage hair. The capsicum peppers do not only look good and

colourful but they are also bundled with health benefits.

For health’s sake Being rich in Vitamin C, paprika can add a lot of nutritional value to any dish. This fact is tried and tested right from its discovery in 1932 by the Nobel prize-winner Albert Szent-Györgyi from Hungary. In fact, it is amusing to know how the Vitamin C content in the paprika herb is actually higher on the measuring scale by weight than that attributed to lemon juice. So, no wonder that paprika is also high in antioxidants. For those who are quite intrigued by the colour, the bright hue of paprika is primarily due to the xanthophylls, carotenoid and zeaxanthin content of this exotic herb. Well to be more exact for the health conscious, according to the USDA, 1tbsp (6.8g) of paprika has the following nutritional content: Calories:19; Fat: 0.88g; Carbohydrates: 3.67g; Fiber: 2.4g and Protein: 0.96g. Hence, paprika is the best bet when one is looking for a colourful menu packed with high health quotient.

Bring the water to boil in a small saucepan. Add the fennel seeds, cardamom and cloves, cover, and remove from the heat. Set aside for 10 minutes. Place the raisins, almonds, pistachios and melon seeds, sunflower seeds, or pine nuts in a bowl and add fennel tea. Cover and set aside for at least one hour. Transfer it to a blender, cover, and blend until the nuts and spices are reduced to a smooth texture. Pour into a strainer and set over a bowl. Combine the nut milk, saffron milk and remaining milk in a large jug and chill well. Serve over a crushed ice.

SAYANTI BANERJEE

Being high on energy comes naturally to actress Lillete Dubey. A vivacious personality both on and off the screen, she talks about what keeps her going!

A

true Virgo by birth, Lillete Dubey does not look anywhere close to 50’s. “If the world will end in 2012, I want to win an Oscar before that and write a novel!” is what Lillete Dubey candidly shares adding with a chuckle that she wants to be a grand-mom too. That is how her energy translates as you watch the young at heart lady come up with her characteristic laugh.

A woman of substance She is a firm believer of education as her family members are highly accomplished professionals. In fact given her own merit too, her parents thought either she would become a Nuclear physicist or a doctor. It would have been more like ‘osmosis’ as she loves to describe, how people simply ‘sip into’ to the traditional way of life of all that they have grown up with, without wanting to really explore anything beyond.

Thankfully, that was not to be the case for Lillete. Life of course had other plans for this bright woman who does respect education. She exerts, “Education is definitely very important as it colours the way one looks at life and broadens the horizon.” Though not exactly a headstrong feminist, Lillete does come across as a very strong and independent woman. This attribute she credits to her mother who was a gynecologist and has worked as a professional for several decades. Lillete firmly believes, “A man has never been the ‘be all and end all’ of things for me. Having my own identity and getting creative satisfaction is very important for me.”

Non-filmi approach Though Lillete came into the limelight because of playing various interesting roles in Bollywood movies, theatre still remains her first love. She regards Barry John as her mentor, back from her college and university days. She takes pride in sharing, “For me work comes on its own and I do Bollywood films for fun mostly. Sometimes the reason I choose to play a part is to work with good actors, at times it is for a friend or even the vision the director wants to cast you in seems incredibly interesting.” The last bit is quite true specially for her role of Jaswinder ‘Jazz’ Kapoor in Kal Ho Na Ho. Laughing while recalling the experience of playing an embarrassing wannabe and a clownish seductress for the first time, Lillete say, “Initially I was shocked why Karan would want me to play such a character but it turned out to be so cool. I did it for fun but the audience too enjoyed it as much.” But then there are a few of those characters that are close to her heart but may not have been commercially successful like playing Anita Rosario Kapoor in My Brother Nikhil for instance. Then there are more roles I loved like Rose Davenport of Zubeidaa, Mrs. Mohanlal from Pinjar or Zuleikha Banu from Housefull. Having been a part of this industry for a while, Lillete shares, “There are actually very few roles for senior supporting female actors I feel and I would hate to carry the baggage of being ‘type cast’.” So it is her theatre production The Primetime Theatre Co. that gets her creative satisfaction at the end of the day. She loves to produce, direct and act in plays without having to keep to any particular parameter. The theme,

On March 8, the world celebrates International Women’s Day and this makes for a perfect occasion to recall their success story. However, there are many more out

Flying high

Sneha Shekhawat This Republic Day was a special one, as the nation showcased its might, it also saluted the role of its intrepid women. As the Rajpath reverberated with marching contingents, Flight Lieutenant Sneha Shekhawat became the centre of all attraction. She became the first woman to lead the Indian Air Force contingent at the Republic Day Parade ever. She was assisted by three other women flying officers Heena Pore, Anupam Chaudhary and Pooja Negi as the 144-strong Air Force contingent marched to the tunes of ‘Air Battle’. It was a moment of pride for every Indian to see a woman in

such a leading role. Reflecting on that moment, Ft. Lt. Shekhawat says, “To lead the IAF’s contingent at the Republic Day Parade on Rajpath, I think is a matter of great honour for anybody. Yes, I definitely feel as proud as any officer, who would have been given this opportunity.” Shekhawat, who comes from the small town of Sikar in Rajasthan is at present posted with the IAF squadron in Ghaziabad. When asked about her career choice she proudly said, “I always wanted to join the Defence Forces. I wanted to fly since childhood and so the IAF was a natural career option.”

The movie ‘Peepli Live’ took the nation by storm a couple of years back. Dealing with the sensitive issue of farmers’ suicide, the movie brings out the harsh realities. Released at a time when the nation witnessed quite a few of such cases, the film did open up a plethora of unanswered questions. The young scriptwriter as well as director of the movie, Anusha Rizwi is one of the successful women directors’ who does not shy away from directing films of her choice. Talking to us, she said, “The topic chooses you, rather than you deciding what you want to write about. As a director, the effort of directing a movie is extremely intensive,

exhausting but at the same time very very rewarding.” Already working on her next film based on Amitabh Ghosh’s novel Sea of Poppies, she says she loves the whole exercise of editing and putting the story together for her viewers. According to Rizwi, filmmaking for her has been a bitter-sweet experience of things that she loved doing, and few aspects that she does not like so much (like marketing); but overall it has been rewarding and very enriching. She feels more women should come forward into film making and do films that they want and are convinced about.

ll of you who have seen the movie, 3 Idiots will surely remember the character of Millimetre, often dropping words of wisdom in between ironing stacks of clothes. For the small boy leading a below average life in Gurgaon suburb, life changed when he became part of the Literacy India. While it opened the door for proper education, the organisation also nurtured his creative talent. He was good in acting and after attending workshops and participating in several plays, he began his journey with

Bollywood acting. Rahul (his actual name) bagged role in films like Blue Umbrella and Omkara before doing the blockbuster film 3 Idiots where he got to act along with stars like Aamir Khan. Today, Rahul is preparing for the Class X exams and is constantly indulging in his love for acting through the various theatre workshop organised by Literacy India. Though he is the shining star in the organisation’s history, there are many other success stories to write home about.

Literacy India is leaving no stone unturned to educate children and empower them with computer skills

Computer literacy Literacy India in its long journey since 1996 realised children always responded better when taught with the digital media. Taking a step forward, the organisation recently launched Gyantantra Digital Dost, a comprehensive computer aided educational package to provide primary level education. Volunteers at the organisation narrate instances when computers provided to slum children helped them in getting them to participate in projects and other activities. “Computers are always a big hit among children. It keeps them coming back for more. And once the interest is generated it is easier to teach them,” says a volunteer who works among underprivileged children in Delhi. The programme will help teachers in all different centres to teach through the digital media making it more interesting for the students, who find the conventional mode of teaching not captivating enough. Capt. Indraani Singh, Managing Trustee and Founder Secretary, Literacy India says,

“At Literacy India, the focus has always been on continuous innovation to overcome the challenges. ‘Gyantantra Digital Dost’ is meant to be a knowledge machine which will encourage participation and positive engagement among children.” The volunteers also say such is the interest for digital education that children often come to the centres in the evening after doing their daily work.

Life changing moments In today’s time when providing two square meals a day has become a challenge for parents in the lower strata of the society, Literacy India has extended the much needed helping hand in providing quality education to their children. Most of the families are migrants from nearby states like Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal and have no established source of income with many working as daily wage earners. Providing education to their children is the toughest challenge that these parents face and most of these children end up

begging or taking up unscrupulous activities. The lives of many women have also changed after they were trained by Literacy India in various vocational courses. While some take up tailoring work, others learn how to make paper products. The organisation, with its multiple programmes helps the children and women find a space of their own and open up avenues for them to earn some money. For the women folk, these opportunities come as means to self empowerment, giving them a life of dignity, perhaps for the first time in their lives. Literacy India in its long years of existence has changed the lives of many. While Mansa, daughter of a security guard is currently doing her B Tech from Allahabad University, Deepa adopted by the organisation in 1999 is currently pursuing D. Ed from District Institute of Education & Training collage at Garhi Harsaru. Children of parents who did not have substantial earning, their lives would never have been the same without the support of the organisation. Today, both Mansa and Deepa besides many other youngsters are enjoying benefits much beyond their means. The organisation after enrolling students, judge the inclination and interest of each

student before helping them chalk out a career path for them. There are others like Tafrej, whose parents moved to Delhi from Meerut with no source of income. Tafrej, though average in studies, showed extraordinary talent in drawing and use of computers. He was taught animation and other computer programme and today he is working as Lab assistant in Literacy India to teach computer skill and animation to other students. Paint the town Holi also marks the beginning of Hindu month Phagun, which arrives with the promise of warm days ahead and spring. Though, there is hardly a downside to this exuberance, Holi is an occasion which makes people go high on chemical based colours and gulal. Synthetic dyes and colours have taken the Indian markets by storm and are filled with greasy toxic chemical based colours that can have adverse affects on the skin and respiratory systems. Chemical based Holi colours from China have also flooded our markets and seem to have a very harsh and toxic effect especially on children who are vulnerable to the inferior quality and dangerous toxins like lead and mercury. The liquid colours are mostly acquired from industrial dyes and can lead to severe skin allergies and eye infections.
