As the nation faces a great challenge to meet the requirement of electric power in various spheres of daily life due to increasing population, students of Ajay Kumar Garg Engineering College (AKGEC), Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, have found a novel solution for alleviating the shortage of electricity. The innovative idea conceptualised by these young engineers utilises each step of the growing population for generation of electricity. The growing population that was considered a cause for depletion will soon become a source of generation to meet the growing demand of power. The students of BTech (Mechanical) of AKGEC have conceptualised, designed and fabricated an Energy Tile, which produces electric power with each step placed on it. The Piezo Energy Tiles use Piezoelectric material that converts the mechanical stress, caused in it by people stepping on it, into electric energy that can be stored and used. The Energy Tile has been tested and also demonstrated at Metro Bhawan for its wide- spread use at various metro stations under the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. The Energy Tile can also be used at airports, shopping malls, hospitals, bus stands, concert halls and at any other place where frequent movement of crowds take place. The innovative effort of the young engineers of AKGEC is an inspiring step towards fulfilling the objectives of Government of India’s Skill India and Make in India missions.
