25 years of cooperation The upcoming ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit, to be held on January 25, 2018, salutes the strengthening ties between the two entities

I

ndia has shared an enduring diplomatic relationship with the 10-nation grouping of ASEAN for 25 years, an occasion that will be marked in 2018 by the ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit. To be held on January 25 in New Delhi, the summit marks 25 years of Dialogue Partnership, 15 years of Summit Level interaction and five years of Strategic Partnership between the two entities. This is the second time in the 10-nation grouping's history that it is holding a second special summit with a nonmember country. The theme of the summit, “Shared Values, Common Destiny”, emphasises the fact that ASEAN and India are connected by shared cultural and civilisational elements, as well as convergent interests. Moreover, the summit is also a significant tribute to India’s deepening relations with each of the 10 ASEAN member countries, and also marks a growing recognition of the government’s Act East policy. Silver jubilee The year 2018 will mark the 25th anniversary of India-ASEAN's Dialogue Partnership with a series of activities and events spread out through January, culminating in the summit on January 25. In the run up to the latter, a Business & Investment Meet and Expo, Business Conclave, Textile Event and Regional Indian Diaspora Meet have also been planned. This comes after several events

The summit is a significant tribute to India’s deepening relations with each of the 10 ASEAN member countries, and also marks a growing recognition of the government’s Act East policy organised throughout 2017, including academic conferences, cultural festivals and a Youth Summit. Economic cooperation ASEAN is India's fourth-largest trading partner, and trade and investment relations between the two entities have been steadily growing through the years. India's trade with ASEAN nations has increased from USD 65 billion in 2015-16 to USD 70 billion in 2016-17, and India's export to ASEAN has grown from USD 25 billion in 2015-16 to USD 31.07 billion in 2016-17. Investment flows from both sides have also been substantial - ASEAN accounts for approximately 12.5 per cent of investment flows into India since the year 2000. The ASEAN-India Free Trade Area has
