IN PRAISE OF LIGHT

Light is something untouchable yet its existence is incontrovertible.

Light will turn into various forms through air that produces different senses. Nonetheless, the fundamental essence of light is unchanged and cannot be twisted.

The presence of light absorbing impurities in our surrounding areas, such as air pollutants, creates a sense of resistance to light.

Kwun Tong Promenade, a recreational park amid the hustle and bustle, is a good example to illustrate how architecture can incorporate the element of nature into frenetic city life and also make us reflect upon the utilization of public space with a touch of natural elements such as light.

The idea of “In Praise of Light”, aims to display and transform the presence of light in a natural but unique way so as to project and recall the sounds of nature in such compact and fast-moving city.

THE FALLEN LEAVES

EXPLORE, EMBRACE, ENJOY

A boundaryless and spatial impression of space is created with the fallen leaves that drifted by the autumn wind; the proposed design is inspired by the abstract form of fallen leaves and is aimed to create an edgeless architectural space and emphasize the essence of freedom and exploration in nature. The flow pattern of the site is highlighted with the horizontal strips of wood that unfolds the maturity of the proposed design.

Such design idea originally comes from the existing facilities of Kwun Tong Promenade, both of the visual tectonic features and functions help bring about a dialogue between the new and the old.

Not only does nature lead us to the quest of knowledge and reason but also surrounds us with salient colours and enthralling composition as well as a sense of harmony. The interlocking relation of indoor and outdoor space, the indeterminateness of space boundary encourages end-users to explore, embrace and most importantly, to enjoy the beauty and calm given by nature.

MAKING

OF

Wooden strips are fixed into flexible round shape ribs steel structure and adjustable steel fixings with bolts in order to make curve-shaped wooden strips be aligned and set horizontally. This can thereby create consistent linearity and energetic form to the architectural design.

THE TRANSFORMATION OF WING LEE STREET

Wing Lee Street is located in the tenement house (Tong Lau) district in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong Island. With the vibrant development of the surrounding high rise buildings, such area with the liveliest neighborhood character is isolated and forgotten.

Until recent years, the award-winning movie, ‘Echoes of the Rainbow’, has evoked the existence of Wing Lee Street as well as a sense of nostalgia for collective memory around the district.

The proposed urban planning is designed to retain the traditional living culture as well as the neighborhoods characteristics in the residential quarter.

The existing layout of building complex is remained unchanged yet innovative elements are incorporated into such nostalgic and homey atmosphere.

The existing building blocks are renovated with cellulated elevation in order to improve the physical and visual connectivity between lanes and storey, as well as the accessibility for a capacious living environment.

PRESERVING ORIGINAL LIFE AUTONOMOUS LIVING STYLE The urban planning aimed to promote the idea of consensus building encourageing local residents to actively participate in the process of community development. Thus the functions of building complex can be adjusted over time in response to the changing needs of residents.

The proposed structural framework supplemented with existing functional modules for residential and social purposes, allows residents to participate to decide the use of space, so as to better access the sustainability of land use planning. Emphasis on the malleability of space transforms the old district into a new planning area with higher flexibility and innovation.

LOWER LEVEL

At the lower level, the shops and restaurants such as art gallery and cafes in Soho with blended eastern and western cultures are kept in order to maintain the stability of pedestrian flow.

MID LEVEL

The mid level is designed for residential purpose only, with connected outdoor recreational area, so as to retain the form of verandahs and balconies of tenement house.

UPPER LEVEL

The upper level is designed to accommodate various social functions such as library, multifunctional room, elderly community center, nursery center and sports centre, etc. Covered bridge/walkway is available to improve the connectivity between different facilities and maintain the privacy of local residents.

Private residential developement on a 2400 sq.m. site @ Sai Kung Pak Shek Wo, New Territories Located within tight site constraints of an existing deep slope of 11 meter level difference and directly in view of a columbarium, the design is angled 37 degrees to avoid the direct view. The proposed development includes 6 semi privately owned villas of which sustains different lease requirements based of their proximity site. Each villa is of 2,400sqm with allocation of 0.5 plot ratio / BD 3.5), consisting of 2 floors, car parking provision, a swimming pool and a large external garden area.

The development aims to attract the youth with an envisagement of innovation and creativity with ideas to facilitate global recognition. Furthermore, outdoor sports facilities promotes health and physical wellbeing with a central focal grand square of inject a sense of community and integration.

“ THE WHITE CUBES ” Taking into consideration of the sculpture to be a functional art piece located on a public street, THE WHITE CUBES was conceived as a mixed media pavilion cum the walkway to the exhibition studio nearby that blends function with aesthetics, the natural with the artificial, and tradition with the contemporary.

By artfully locating it under the shades, THE WHITE CUBES has come to represent the union and harmony between human beings & nature. The cubes taking a stable cubic form in a size that is neither too big nor too small, serves as a relaxing pavilion resonating with the tranquility of the tree shades from right above. The large and small apertures meanwhile allow airiness, vista and movement from all sides.

The immediate proximity of the organic disorder of trunks and leaves and the man-made rational order of the Box, on the other hand, simultaneously poses a strong visual tension of the opposing forces. The contrasting intervention of the Box in the soft landscape also challenges pedestrians to stop and appreciate nature.
