I. Personal- Who I Am

Hi, I’m Max and I’m a 3rd-year

MLA student at City College.

Background: I spent nearly a decade in the horticulture business, where I developed my knowledge and love for plants. I worked everywhere from rooftop gardens in Times Square to the field of the New York Mets.

Origin:

The creativity and flow in skateboarding inspired me to envision spaces that are not only functional but also encourage people to engage with the environment in dynamic ways.

As a woodworker and photographer, I have an appreciation for problem solving, craftsmanship, and material. I use it as a creative outlet and love finding inspiration from the world around me.

I. Projects- What I’ve Done

In June 2024, I was awarded a Horticulture Fellowship with the Trust for Governors Island, where I worked to establish the largest native meadow on the east coast.

Governors Island Horticulture Fellowship

The goal of this project was to create a lush tropical zone within the Flatbush of the future. A series of linked plazas provide space to gather, learn, and experience a futuristic vision of what could be.

This group project of three students required each of us to 3d model our plaza in Rhino, program it, and render it in Enscape.

The goal of this design was to create a protected area that would keep dune disturbance to a minimum, allowing an ecosystem to thrive where it normally wouldn’t.

Lichen as Bioindicators

For this project, I used a Grasshopper script to generate a series of canals based on flooding scenarios in Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

The goal of this design was to see what novel ecologies would develop based on various conditions.

For this site, sunlight and space were limited. I created a planting design that utilized a matrix style mix of grasses, perennials, and native plants that would provide year round services.

At my internship, I would often draft CAD drawings. From details like electric panel coverings, to stair tread options, I enjoy the precise nature of using AutoCAD. I also made planting plans, as seen below.

I use Lumion to show the loose and interprative early stages of a project, to the final renderings with clearly articulated details.

Inquiry: Determine the spectral values of Brooklyn Bridge Park before and after its extensive renovation. These values show heat emissions and permeability.

Findings: Values had gone down, showing the benefit of vegetation on reducing surface heat and increasing permeability for stormwater management.

Inquiry: The goal of this project was to analyze the 3 bridges of lower Manhattan with LiDAR, mapping their characteristics.
