Illustrator Quentin Jones has gained a solid reputation by lending her artistic eye to some of the world’s biggest fashion houses. It’s no surprise that her style has also gained global appeal. By Yale Breslin Vorrei sapere, da dove viene il tuo nome, Quentin?

Sono la quinta dei figli di mio padre: Quentin significa quinto figlio.

Dimmi quando hai capito per la prima volta che ti piaceva disegnare.

I miei genitori sono architetti e i miei nonni erano artisti, quindi in famiglia abbiamo sempre trascorso weekend o vacanze abbastanza “creativi”. Per esempio, quando andavamo in Italia, io e mio padre disegnavamo. Mia mamma ci comprava sempre un blocco da disegno nuovo per le vacanze quando eravamo piccoli.

Quali sono i tuoi primi ricordi legati al disegno?

Sono nata a Toronto e lì ho vissuto fino a cinque anni.

Ricordo che andavo al museo con mio padre e facevo schizzi delle opere che vedevo.

Sei un’appassionata di animazione e illustrazione: guardavi i cartoni animati da bambina?

Nella serie Sesame Street c’erano delle animazioni fantastiche. C’erano alfabeti animati in cui succedevano tante piccole cose. Le ho riscoperte di recente.

Qual è il tuo illustratore preferito?

Direi il mio omonimo Quentin Blake, che ha illustrato tutti i libri di Roald Dahl: l’uno e l’altro erano i miei eroi da bambina. Penso che per l’arte e la moda sia importante avere un po’ di senso dell’umorismo.

E sia Dahl che Blake affrontavano la scrittura e l’illustrazione da una prospettiva leggermente ironica.

Ho saputo che sei una brava cuoca: cosa ti piace cucinare?

Adoro la pasta: le linguine con le vongole probabilmente sono il mio piatto preferito in assoluto. Adoro la

I’m my dad’s fifth child and Quentin means the fifth child.

Tell me about the first time you realised you liked to draw?

My parents are architects and my grandparents were artists so as a family we’ve always done quite arty weekends or holidays – like we’d go to Italy and my dad and I would draw. My mum would always buy us a new sketchbook for holidays when we were tiny.

What are some of your earliest drawing memories?

I was born in Toronto and lived there for the first five years of my life. I remember going to a museum with my dad and I would sketch the works of art I saw.

You love animation and illustration, did you watch cartoons as a child?

Sesame Street has awesome animated bits in it. They used to have animated alphabets where they’d have different little things happening. I re-discovered them recently actually.

Do you have a favourite illustrator?

I’d have to say my namesake Quentin Blake. He illustrated all the Roald Dahl books – they were both big heroes for me as a child. I think it’s important for art and fashion to have a bit of a sense of humor. Both Dahl and Blake approached writing and illustration with a slightly tongue-in-cheek perspective.

I hear you’re a good cook. What sorts of things do you like to make?

I really like to cook pasta – Linguine Vongole is probably my favourite food ever. I really like to cook

Indian food, but you need to have all the right stuff, which means you need to have a proper kitchen – which isn’t happening in New York.

You’ve been wearing some incredible dresses this morning – do you remember any of your earliest ‘dress’ memories?

When I was a kid I used to have to wear all my older brothers hand-me-downs so I used to wear boys clothes. My mum didn’t buy me dresses although she did let me wear her camisoles as dresses because they were long enough for me. I think my aunts wedding was the first time I remember her specifically buying me a dress. It was a white cotton dress with a little sash around the middle and I was pretty pleased with it. My mum braided white flowers into my hair: I was the flower girl. My brother wore his karate outfit to the wedding.

I know you’re a film lover. Are there any films that stand out for their clothing?

The Wizard of Oz has some pretty great sequined numbers and the witches have quite good outfits, too. I also love films where people get married. As a young girl that was exciting – the big white numbers.

The Graduate is also good, not that you should be watching that as a child though.

What’s your approach to getting dressed?

I’m going to work in my studio, which is quite messy.

So usually I just wear jeans and comfortable shoes, which I pair with shirts and jumpers. In the summer

When it comes to my style, I’m probably a little bit tomboyish and scruffy but while being as ladylike as possible. comode, e li abbino a camicie e maglioni. D’estate porto delle piccole salopette o qualcosa di simile. Di sera invece mi piace molto indossare abiti e tacchi alti. Quando mi organizzo bene, porto con me le scarpe col tacco, così posso creare un outfit che vada bene per lo studio ma anche per la sera. Anche il rossetto aiuta sempre.

Come descriveresti il tuo stile?

Il mio stile è pieno di contrasti. Se indosso un abito femminile, lo abbino a scarpe maschili. Cerco di non essere troppo “o una cosa o l’altra”.

Quali sono le regole di stile a cui sei sempre fedele?

Direi che una regola di stile è mantenere un look semplice e non troppo ragionato. Se ti fa sentire a tuo agio, allora ti sta bene. Se invece ti fa sentire un po’ nervosa quando esci di casa, sicuramente ti pentirai del tuo look entro mezz’ora.

Tutti parlano del little black dress perfetto: secondo te com’è?

Penso che ci possano essere tantissime versioni diverse del little black dress perfetto. Può essere a sottoveste, un po’ baggy, o più simile a una T-shirt, da portare con le gambe nude. A me piace quando è nonchalant, non costruito, destrutturato. È questo l’ideale per me.

I’ll wear little overalls or something along those lines but in the evening I really like wearing heels and dresses. If I’m smart I’ll pack heels so that I can do an outfit that works for the studio but also transitions well into the evening. Lipstick always helps, too.

How would you describe your style?

My style is full of contrasts. If I wear a dress, which is a little girly, I’ll wear flats like brogues. I try to not be too much one thing or the other.

Ok, so do you have style rules that you live by?

I’d say a style rule is try to keep it simple and don’t over-think it. If you feel comfortable in it, then you are going to look good in it. But if you feel a bit nervous leaving the house, then you are definitely going to regret it about half an hour later.

Everyone talks about the perfect Little Black Dress. What do you think makes the ideal LBD? I think there can be so many different versions of the perfect little black dress. It can either be shifty, a little bit baggy or more along the lines of a T-shirt which is nice to wear with bare legs. For me, I like it when it’s effortless and untailored without structure.

That’s just what works for me.

Da ragazzina dovevo mettermi tutto quello che mi passavano i miei fratelli più grandi, quindi di solito portavo vestiti da maschio. Mia mamma non mi comprava abiti, però mi lasciava portare le sue canottiere come abiti: erano lunghe abbastanza per me. La prima volta che mi ha comprato un abito, che io ricordi in modo specifico, credo sia stata per il matrimonio dei miei zii. Era un abito di cotone bianco con una fascia sottile attorno alla vita. Ne ero molto compiaciuta. Mia mamma mi aveva intrecciato dei fiori bianchi nei capelli: ero la damigella che portava i fiori. Mio fratello si è messo il suo completo da karate per la cerimonia.

So che sei un’amante del cinema. Ci sono film che ammiri in particolare per i loro costumi?

Ne Il Mago di Oz ci sono splendidi abiti di paillettes e le streghe hanno dei look fantastici. Poi adoro i film in cui la gente si sposa. Da ragazzina ero affascinata dagli abiti da sposa. Anche ne Il Laureato, ci sono dei bei costumi, ma non è un film adatto ai bambini.
