FOREWORD Internet Week Denmark is a festival celebrating the internet. The internet wasn’t build in one week, and neither is the festival. The festival is expected to get bigger and better the coming years — and just like the internet, nobody knows what it will look like in 5 or 10 years. In the handout you will be presented to an app, which could be the first step on improving the festival radically. The app should not be perceived as an isolated element, but more as a catalyzator on forming the whole festival into a better experience. Enjoy your reading.

Briefly about the —

CHALLENGE Based on the research (LB Analyse, 2016) and semi structured interviews, the challenge turned out to be the networking part, and the feeling of a festival. Overall people are satisfied with the festival, but they miss the festival feeling and being part of something bigger. The participants are mostly professionals, students and teachers working in the digital field. They see the opportunity of expanding their professional network, but they don’t feel like the festival provides with good networking facilities.

CONCEPT The IWDK APP’s intention is to give people a festive feeling, and help them network. But how exactly will that work? By giving a personalized, fun, and easy-to-acces overview of what the festival offers.

Gamification & interactive design

Overview & easy access

Personalized experience

Quick access from the —

MENU

The menu screen is the heart of the app. From here, the user have access to the whole festival. On top, the users name will be shown to make the experience more personal. In the top section there will also be personalized tips, to make sure the user gets most out of the app. The menu is divided into 6 sections — each section will be described in the following pages. The bottombar contains a function called QR. Here every user has a personal QR code connected with the profile. The QR code can be used as a registration tool so that the app can keep track on which events a user attends, and IWDK can gather important data about the users behavior by scanning their QR codes everytime they attend an event.

If you want to find —

EVENTS The event section provides you with an overview of all events throughout the festival. It gives you the option to filter through: day, field, type of event and language. The system reacts immediately when choosing a filter, which makes the experience more intuitive. When the user finds an event they want to know more about, they just click on ”read more” and they will be directed to a page for that specific event. Here they can find the address, see a participants list, attend/ cancel, and read if the speaker have any notices about the event.

PLANNER

The user will find its own planned events in ”My planner”. On top the user will find a slider with ”Todays events”, and the next event will be the first shown. It’s easy to find address , time and participant list, and if the user wants to read more, there’s also a button for that. Underneath the top section, the user can see the planned events for the next days. These events will only be shown in a list format to show as many as possible. To get more information about the specific event it’s just a click away. There’s a big ”find more events” call-to-action button which invites the user to explore more events.

FESTIVAL MAP

The festival map is not only a feature in the app, but a whole new way of organizing the festival. The city will be divided in different fields, representing a subject. In that way the participants don’t have to move from A to B if they are interested in only one field. Another benefit of this system, is the networking. In this way it’s easy to find people with specific interests. The map is interactive, meaning that you can click on a field, and the map will show you which events the field contains. This is another way of filtering, if you would like to find events physically close to each other.

NETWORK When a user signs up, they can connect with LinkedIn. In that way the app can show if people with the same connections are in the same room, it can show the user if there will be connections attending a specific event, and it’s a way of getting the users to know better. In the network section it’s possible to exchange professional information in a new and more interactive way. The first screen will ask the user if they want to see who they’ve got in their network, or if they want to network. More about the network feature will be explained on the next pages.

How to use the personal —

QR CODE

Qr codes have existed for a while, but they never really broke through. Despite that fact, they CAN be very useful, when used in the right situations. With the IWDK APP every user will get a personal QR code. The code will be scanned when they attend an event, but it will also play an important role in the networking situations. If two participants want to network, they just scan each others QR codes, and in a matter of seconds they can see if they have interests and connections in common. This is a fun way of connecting, where you have to talk to the person in front of you, and hopefully it will help make the situation easier and more casual.

CONTACTS After completing a scan the app will show which interests and connections the users have in common. If the user chooses to save the contact they can see the contact information, current job position and interests. If the user wants to view all saved contacts, this is also possible. This is done from the ”Network & contacts” menu by choosing ”My contacts”. In this screen the user can slide through every contact, view their LinkedIn profile, and delete them if wanted.

If you want to know more —

ABOUT IWDK Internet Week Denmark wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for all the partners, volunteers, founders etc. The app will help spread the word, and make sure the user can find all relevant information about who runs the festival. If the user wants to become a volunteer, they will also find information about it in this section. The menu is made interactive by combining a traditional menu with gamification elements. This means that the user has to pop the bubbles, to choose a subpage.

How does the app use —

GAMIFICATION When signing up, the user will be lead to a bubble game. They are asked to pop the bubbles off their interests. In that way the app will get a better understanding on who the user is, and the user will hopefully find it more enganging to fill out. This feature makes it easier to personalize the app, which will be explained on the next page. The QR code can be used in the future as gamification. Everytime a user attends an event, the code will be scanned – this could lead to a point system, where the user can earn coupons to cafés in the city or other beneficial offers. The unique QR code opens up to a lot of options, because the data will be attached to a specific user.

PAGE 28

The app makes use of —

PERSONALIZATION The app collects data about the users in different ways: • Connecting the account to LinkedIn • Asking the users about their interests • Collecting data throughout the festival, by using QR This data can be used to make the experience fit personal goals and needs. One way of doing that is by talking directly to the user as seen on the screen. In this example, the app has just registered that John’s QR code was scanned at an event, and therefore it can tell John who else is present, and how they have something in common. This will help in finding people to network with. Other examples on notification messages could be: • Reminder of an event • Other connections attends the same event

SUM UP The IWDK APP makes it easier for participants to network with each other, and in that way get more out of their presence. Gamification is used to engage users, and can be further developed by collecting data. Personalized notifications makes sure that the user gets the most out of the festival. The app collects data about the user, which can be used to further improve the experience in future festivals. By using the app, the user will have an easy access to the personalized festival, and get an instant overview.

PAGE 31

All this ends up in a —

KEY MESSAGE The IWDK app fits the whole festival concept by using some of the big trends in the internet world — gamification, personalization and interaction. The app also gathers data about participants interests and behaviour which can create value in the future to help make IWDK even more festive and awesome.
