The S.O.A.R Guide to Managing Sore Muscles and Joint Pain

T

he weekend arrives, you’ve been working hard all week and now you want to clean up the yard or play just as hard. Your yard might need to be attacked with that machete to reduce that summer growth which has gone unchecked for weeks. Or there’s nothing like a round of golf, a competitive game of tennis with a pal, a bike ride in the state park, or a fun workout at the gym to help you feel pumped. But all of that activity can cause soreness and stiffness that shows up a day or two later. Don’t get sidelined by pain. Find out the root causes and treatments so you CAN stay sharp and ready.

Why am I so sore after weekend workouts as I am active all week?

It’s normal to have sore muscles after you work out, play sports, or even do housework, especially if: n You did something you’re not used to, like biking 40 miles when you normally bike just a few miles. n You increased your exercise intensity level or increased the duration of your workout. n You did unusual exercises that lengthen instead of shorten your muscle, like walking downhill or extending your arm during a bicep curl. These alterations to your exercise regime can cause tiny injuries to your muscle fibers and connective tissue.

About 24 hours later, you’ll start to feel sore.

Delayed onset muscle soreness, reaches its worst within about 48 hours, and then it will slowly improve. When you do the same activity again, your muscles will start to get used to it and you will experience less or no soreness because you have strengthened the muscle or connective tissue, What’s Causing My Joint Pain?

Do your joints feel sore and achy? That is often an indicator of an inflammatory problem called osteoarthritis, which becomes more common as you age. Your cartilage that was there to cushion your joints has worn away over time, leaving the joints inflamed

and painful. Pain in the joints may also be caused by overuse or injury. Tennis elbow or knee pain caused by a problem with a ligament or meniscus is common. Ligaments are bands of tissue that connect bones in your body. A meniscus is a rubbery disc that cushions your knee.

Treating Sore Muscles and Joint Pain Ice or Heat?

Many experts say indirect ice, which is ice wrapped in a thin towel is best for immediate relief. Heat may feel good while it’s on, but it’s not going to reduce the inflammation and pain.

Ice the sore area right after the activity for no longer than 15 minutes at a time to reduce the inflammation. Heat can be used later to increase blood flow to the area followed by gentle stretching of adjoining muscles. Heat also can help relieve joint pain. Medicines such as acetaminophen or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may ease the discomfort. Just be cautious about using them regularly. Long-term use can affect your stomach, liver and or kidneys.

Further, they can sometimes interfere with your muscle’s ability to repair itself. A good rule is to always check with your physician before using any medications.

If your pain doesn’t improve or subside over the next few days, something else could be going on. Make an appointment for a consultation with one of the pain management experts at S.O.A.R and design a plan to keep you in the game. n
