OVERVIEW
History
Named for pioneer surveyor, Abram
Maury, Maury (pronounced MURRee) County was open for settlement after the signing of the Dearborne Treaty of 1807. The next year a small group of South Carolina Presbyterians moved into the area and established a settlement known as the Zion Community.
Agriculture dominated Maury County’s early industry with a number of mills and tanneries. A leading mule market for more than a century, Columbia continues to
celebrate the working breed during it’s annual Mule Day celebration.
Maury County was home to the eleventh President of the United States, James Knox Polk (18451849). His restored ancestral home in downtown Columbia is one of many homes where visitors can take a walk into the past.
Maury County is known as the Antebellum Homes Capital of Tennessee. Between 1810 and 1860 plantations flourished. Many of
the homes were built by master craftsman, Nathan Vaught.
In the mid 1980’s, Maury County’s economic future was shaped by the announcement that GM would build their Saturn auto plant in northern Maury County. Today, Maury County boasts a diverse economy, a thriving courthouse square, and three primary cities: Columbia, Mount Pleasant, and Spring Hill. Currently Maury is the fastest growing county in the state of Tennessee.

Columbia’s historic downtown offers antiques, a variety of boutiques, and several dining choices. A new arts district in the downtown area is home to unique restaurants, a brewery, and hosts several pop-up events throughout the year. In Mount Pleasant, a small, but quaint town the focus is on home grown and locally owned businesses. Spring Hill is developing as a retail and restaurant center that serves a broader region.

Public Transportation
The Mule Town Trolley Service connects people across Maury County by providing public transportation services Monday - Saturday from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. The service is managed and operated by South Central TN Development District.

Senior Transportation
MyRide TN is a volunteer transportation service for people ages 60+ who live independently, but do not drive. Volunteer drivers use their personal vehicles to carry older Tennesseans to a variety of destinations, including medical appointments and grocery stores. Rides are provided Monday–Friday and priority is given to doctor appointments.

Tennessee Reconnect is a scholarship for adults to earn an associate degree or technical certificate, tuition-free.
