Mauritius Golf Tourism Association

Mission “The active promotion of Mauritius as a year-round Golf Destination increasing the number of international golfer arrivals.”

Vision “To be globally recognized as one of the finest golf destinations on the planet and a reference point for others.” 4

Message from the President of the MGTA Dear Golfer, I am deeply honoured to have been invited to pen this note to the inaugural issue as President of the Mauritius Golf Tourism Association (MGTA). With its rich history and mix of various cultural traditions, Mauritius is indeed a privileged country to visit. With nine golf courses of international standard, linked mostly to major luxury local and international hotel chains around the island, the Mauritian golf business industry is booming; and, with two more projects underway. More than a mere sport or tourist attraction, golf in Mauritius has been swinging on a steady growth rate of 6% annually. Surrounded by beautiful beaches and the turquoise sea, our island possesses all the assets to position itself as the exotic golf destination of the Indian Ocean. Our Golf Association (MGTA) is run by golf directors and management teams of the different golf courses of the island; people who are passionate about their work and devo ted to the game itself. Our main objective is to promote golf, and provide information to golfers around the world relating to the different course infrastructure, facilities, and events. Whether you are a Pro or an amateur in search of quality time far from the maddening crowds of Europe, Africa, or Asia, Mauritius is the place for your next golf holiday! We look forward to welcoming you soon. Yours in golf,

Alain Lenoir

Avalon Golf Estate A Golf Experience to be remembered

6

Avalon was the idyllic, mythical wood where apples grew of their own volition and rolling verdant fields produced crops without the intervention of man. It is to this rich history of Avalon, that this golf course was masterfully sculpted into the lush forested central plateau of Mauritius by internationally renowned golf course architect and ex-European Tour professional, Peter Matkovich. Set on the volcanic slopes of the dormant Grand Bassin volcano at 500m above sea level and surrounded by tea plantations, Avalon is the highest place where one can play golf in Mauritius. The views of the southern coastline, lagoon and azure Indian Ocean are simply unprecedented and, on a clear day, are visible from all 18 holes. In the true tradition of the legend of Avalon, we believe that members are to be treated as royalty and guests are members for the day. We look forward to hosting you, make sure you bring your camera.

Legend Golf Course The Legend Golf Course is a parkland type of course with beautiful mature trees and lush vegetation between the different fairways. It also has water hazards on almost every hole, making this golf course a very technical but fair challenge for the players. Power is not the priority on the Legend. You need to be accurate with your drives if you want to beat the course. The 12th & 13th holes are the ‘Amen Corner’ of this course. Many players have lost tournaments on these holes. On hole 12, which is a par four, you have to be on the green in two to get away with a par, missing the green means trouble. The 13th hole is a short par five that is very narrow. Depending on your strategy, you could complete this hole with a birdie or a triple bogey. The par three 17th is the signature hole. With a drive of 140 meters over the lagoon, it is a very exciting shot for every golfer. The green is fairly large and you have a magnificent view of the lagoon.

Links Golf Course since November 2002 / DNA Par 71, 5942m in length. Constance Belle Mare Plage’s other course, the Peter Alliss/Rodney Wright designed Links course is an equally challenging 5942 metres par 71 layout that opened for play in 2002. The Golf course is equipped with a practice fairway and built according to USPGA specifications. With much less water than the Legend course several lakes, the Links still test the golfer on the back nine, particularly on the par four 13th and par three 14th both of which require short iron approaches over water to small greens. For the rest of the holes, when the water is not challenging, there are plenty of strategically placed bunkers and outcrops of volcanic rock to keep the golfer on his or her toes. With its own Golf Academy with professio nal and qualified golf instructors, coaching sessions are available both individually and in group and free green fee for guests staying in Constance Belle Mare Plage and Constance Le Prince Maurice.

Golfing Mauritius and...

24

It is highly likely that the majority of decisions relating to a holiday break in Mauritius is rightly motivated by pictures of endless stret ches of white beaches, swaying coconut trees, and lying on a beach lounger lapping up the sun. The golfer may have looked a little deeper into which 5-star golf resort offers the best and nearest courses, calculating how many rounds there are to be enjoyed during the number of days on the island. However, that would be committing a great injustice to Mauritius Our compact little island is, it is true, surrounded by tropical beaches in safe lagoons. But it also has an extremely developed hinterland, where the most of the 1 250 000 people live. At first this might seem impossible, when you consider that over half of the island’s surface area is covered in sugar cane. Then, there are the mountains everywhere, basaltic relics of the Mauritius’ violent origins as a massive volcano that rose up out of the ocean. But somehow, by the standards of the land masses of Europe, Africa, and Asia, where everyone in Mauritius originates from, its population has managed to strike up a remar kable modus vivendi amongst its competing cultures and religions on this tiny dot in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Today, visitors are privileged to be able to benefit from this heady inclement mix of history, culture, geography, and weather.
