n an effort to unite the Bunnell Police officers with children in the community, the department has teamed up with Cupcake Café owner, Theresa Tazwell, to offer “cupcake citations” to local youth who are observed doing the right thing.

What makes up the recipe for good behavior? Take a handful of respect, a scoop of honesty, three pinches of responsibility, a cup of gratefulness and a bushel of kindness and mix it all together for a sweet result.

The ingredients are detailed on the back of the “citation” card, while the front offers one free cupcake, out of 20 to 30 daily varieties, for the child to redeem with a parent or adult present, Bunnell Police Chief Tom Foster said. The redeemer can choose a scoop of ice cream instead of a cupcake if they prefer.

Foster said he wants the Bunnell youth to see officers as friends and mentors.

“It’s an incentive for my officers to get out of the car and interact with these children in a positive, one-one-one environment,” Foster said.

Chief Foster said this could also be a way for officers to offer positive reinforcement if they respond to a call where children are present and need encouragement.

When Felicia Warren was given the keys to her brand new Palm Coast home through Habitat for Humanity on Tuesday, June 26, she hugged her oldest son, D’mahgio, and said, “We don’t have to move no more.”

Warren, a single mother with seven children — D’mahgio, 16; Janycia, 15; Caumarion, 11; Jayden, 5; Jaleah, 4 and twins Ahmiyah and Ahniyah, 1 — applied for a home through Habitat for Humanity in 2013.

After getting approved, Warren’s home was scheduled to be built the following year, but she became pregnant.

Not able to work during the latter months of her pregnancy, Warren became stressed about rent money for the home she and her family were living in —a Habitat home they’d rented after its previous owners lost the home in foreclosure — and she lost progress for her expected new home.

“I am so thankful for Habitat and Lindsay Elliot and her staff for not giving up on me,” Warren said. “They told me not to worry about the rent and to focus on the health of my baby.”

Once her maternal leave was up, Warren went back to work — and she also went back to work on getting her new home.

Now, the family has it, and those who helped were at the ribbon-cutting event to celebrate.

Annette Lumpkins, Warren’s close friend for over 20 years — and also a Habitat for Humanity home recipient — presented Warren with the keys. The two shared a tearful embrace, and Lumpkins shared how the two had gone through the process together.

“I’ve gone through a lot to get this house,” Warren said. “There were times when I really wanted to give up. But it feels good to have something I can call my own, and everybody in the family helped build this house except the twins.”

Lowe’s donated a trash bin full of household utensils to the Warrens, and Loretta Sylvester and Memory Makers Quilt Guild donated brand new quilts for each of the children.

Sheriff’s Office to create domestic violence task force The Sheriff’s Office hopes to create a task force that can come up with a comprehensive plan on domestic violence within 120 days.

Deputies and police officers in Flagler County arrest about one person per day on a domestic violence charge. In 2013, Corey Miller, 29, was one of them.

At a summit convened by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office June 28 to announce the agency’s intention to form a task force to address domestic violence, Miller spoke about how domestic violence reaches through generations, warping children’s understanding of family and leaving them vulnerable to self-medication with alcohol or drugs.

By the time law enforcement officers are called to a home, he said, domestic violence in that family is already out of control.

“What about that little boy who for the past five years — before it has become a public problem — has watched his family become something so dark that his life, his choices and his love are forever altered?” Miller said.

Miller, a Mississippi native, had been removed from an abusive home as a young child. At age 5, he was placed in an abusive foster home before being sent to a military-style boarding school. He got out, joined a gang — “Thinking that being in a gang was something I was supposed to do; this was something that adults do”— started drugs, and moved to Florida after his birth father offered him a job in the state.

He continued to get in legal trouble until Judge Kim Hammond offered him the choice of jail or the military. He joined the Army, became a medic, continued his drug habit, got out, married and had two children.

The marriage was marred by violence.

“We both were the perpetrator and victim the entire time, just depending on what day it was, and how we felt at that time, and what drug I was on, what drug she was on, who was drinking,” Miller said. “I felt shameful that at that time I’m putting my kids through the exact same thing that I went through. But I didn’t care, all I cared was the end result of hurting her or her hurting me.”

That lasted about eight years.

Miller was arrested in 2013. He realized he was “going to have to face the music,” and has since been rebuilding his life, attending college and staying out of legal trouble since that last 2013 arrest.

LOCAL CASES

There were 667 reported incidents of domestic violence in Flagler County in 2016 and 362 arrests, most for simple assault.

At the domestic violence summit at the Hilton Garden Inn June 28, Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly told the audience of about 70 people the story of some of those local arrests.

In March of this year, there was the case of Pariate Moore, a 26-year-old who was arrested after he attacked his girlfriend while driving home from the beach, stopped the car, dragged her out into a wooded area, beat her, and said he was going to kill

her and throw her body in a creek, according to deputies. He’d been arrested nine times in Flagler County since he turned 18.

In June, there was the case of a 38-year old Palm Coast man hospitalized with a 4-inch stab wound on his shoulder. The man’s wife told deputies he’d fallen and hurt himself, but an investigation showed that the couple’s 14-yearold son had stabbed the father while trying to break up a fight between his parents, Staly said.

Then there were the two murder cases: 52-year-old Dorothy Singer was arrested in May and charged with shooting her husband to death, execution style, while he slept; 74-year-old Bobby Gore was charged in April with shooting his 31-year-old son to death after the son argued with his mother.

Those murder cases, Staly said, are “the ultimate tragedy in domestic violence,” but even cases that don’t end in death scar families.

Dealing with them takes a wide range of community resources.

ENFORCING THE LAW

In the four-county Seventh Judicial Circuit, said State Attorney R.J. Larizza, about a quarter of the murder cases are domestic violence related.

“I believe that domestic violence is the No. 1 problem to deal with right now in the criminal justice system,” Larizza said.

Dealing with domestic violence, he said, can mean moving forward with prosecution even in cases where the victim doesn’t cooperate as a witness.

Seventh Judicial Circuit Public Defender James Purdy told the audience what can happen if law enforcement agencies and prosecutors don’t follow through.

“Once, we had a case out in Deltona where a lady would be continuously battered,” he said.

Officers would intervene, but the woman declined to press charges. The boyfriend would be sent home, because back then, prosecutors wouldn’t pursue domestic violence charges when the victim wasn’t cooperative. “Finally, he got out and he killed her in front of her children, and that was a wake up call for us in the State Attorney’s Office,” Purdy said.

The nature of domestic violence cases can make them difficult to prosecute, he said.

“The dynamics of a domestic violence case are unlike any other criminal case that we have,” Purdy said. “It is the only area of criminal law where the night before trial, the victim and the defendant generally are sleeping in the same bed together. ... They will get up in the morning and drive to court together for one to testify against the other.”

AIDING VICTIMS

Protecting victims can also involve creating programs to help domestic violence offenders stop their behavior.

Programs that address anger management or substance abuse aren’t enough, said Sonny Donaldson, of Stewart-MarchmanAct Behavioral Healthcare.

need to do is look at what’s happening before the murder.”

Detective George Hristakopoulos spend much of his career dealing with domestic violence calls.

“Sometimes as a detective, as a patrol deputy ... I don’t feel like I have the answers I can tell people when they say to me, ‘Well, now my husband’s been arrested. He’s the only person that works. What am I supposed to do about getting to work in the morning? He’s the only person with a driver’s license.

What do I do about paying the rent in 16 days?’ I don’t have those answers.” Hristakopoulos said.

“And hopefully, by coming here, by training, by talking, by communicating with each other and by having more events like these, we can put our heads together and come up with some solutions — so that the next time I have a situation where I have a victim asking me questions like that, I have a better idea of what to tell them.”

Although about 60% of domestic violence offenders have substance abuse problems, Donaldson said, substance abuse is not itself a cause of domestic violence.

“Domestic violence is used to exert power or control over others,” he said. “Substance abuse does not cause violent behavior,” but is often used by perpetrators to excuse their acts.

One primary reason domestic violence victims are often reluctant to cooperate with law enforcement is that they’re often financially dependent on perpetrators, Larizza said.

This year, the Family Life Center, which shelters domestic violence victims, has helped 114 women and 94 children, said Executive Director Trish Giaccone.

“We need to come together as a community to address this, otherwise, there will be no change,” Giaccone said. “Really, what we

Dear Editor: I read Mr. Marco’s letter in your last issue with great concern. I have lived in Palm Coast for 17 years, and in all that time I never knew we were under such threat by gangs. I knew they existed, but I believed our competent Sheriff’s Office had the situation well in hand.

His suggestion that we should arm ourselves in the event of an “active shooter” situation is very worrying. Don’t know many of my fellow retirees who would know what to do in such a situation, wether armed or not. Further, I would be very concerned that interfering with an active shooter may make law enforcement’s role much more difficult, having to then protect themselves as well as an intervening citizen.

I suggest we leave the handling of the gangs to those trained to do the job.

Waste Pro charged $150 to haul branches Dear Editor: I would like to address a very unpleasant experience my wife and I had after moving to Palm Coast.

After spending four winters in this area, we decided to sell our home in Iowa and move to Palm Coast. After several weeks getting settled in, I decided to do some tree trimming to trees on the rear lot line of our property. After talking to several friends, and contacting the city utility department, we were informed that the city’s waste collection services would collect all the branches if they were cut into 4- to 5-foot lengths and placed next to the street, which I did.

This was their policy; after all, we are paying for this service through our monthly utility bill. I was also told that on Wednesdays Waste Pro would pick these up.

The first Wednesday they were not picked up, and I figured due to the heavy rain they would wait until the following Wednesday. That day came and went and branches were still next to the street. I called the city utility department and was told that IS their policy and since it was late afternoon they still had time to pick up the branches since they work until 6 pm. I could call back

When I called the city utility department the next day, it was a different story. I was then told the city had a falling out with Waste Pro and they would no longer pick up a large collection of branches, and I could call them and see if I could get them picked up, which I did. Sometime the next day I had an estimate in my door stating the branches could be picked up for a fee of $150. After getting estimates from several hauling services I decided that Waste Pro was our best deal. I called WP and paid for it.

When we lived in Iowa, that service was provided by the city, and we paid for it through utility services every month no matter if the service was used or not, same as here in Palm Coast — or so I was told. It took Waste Pro no more than five minutes to pick up these branches and haul them away. My wife and I feel like we have been taken advantage of by the city and Waste Pro since we are new to the area: “Welcome to Palm Coast.” This was quite a shock to friends of ours when we told them of our experience.

So if you are considering doing some trimming to trees or bushes on your property, know that Waste Pro will not pick them up and you will pay a hefty price to get them hauled away. The conclusion to this is we would like to get our money back.

Editor’s note: The city’s spokeswoman, Cindi Lane, sent the following explanation: “Weekly yard trash pickup is included in our garbage collection service. Our contract with Waste Pro allows for a pile of loose yard trash no more than 4 cubic yards (3 feet wide by 3 feet tall by 12 feet long). The limbs must be less than 5 feet long and no more than 6 inches in diameter.

“If the customer has more yard debris than that, they can either have it hauled away privately or through Waste Pro OR they can put out just 4 cubic yards each week til the

debris is gone. The rest of their debris would have to be stored in the back yard until it is all disposed of.

“In this case, Waste Pro tagged the door with the estimate, and they photographed the yard debris to document the volume. It clearly exceeded the 4 cubic yards.

“The city has just renewed its contract with Waste Pro, and weekly yard trash pickup will continue to be an included service.”

Palm Coast resident Michael Long, 30, dies after I-95 crash Palm Coast resident Michael Robert Long, 30, died after a June 28 single-car crash on Interstate 95.

The crash happened at about 12:30 a.m. as Long was driving north in a 2015 Toyota Corolla just south of I-95’s exit at State Road 100. Long lost control of the car “for unknown reasons,” according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release.

The car veered into the center media and hit a guard rail, then traveled back across all three northbound lanes before entering the shoulder and striking a tree.

Long was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach after the crash, according to the news release, and died later that day.

Long was father to a 7-year-old boy. The family has set up a GoFundMe page to pay for expenses related to Long’s viewing, which will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 7, at Craig Flagler Palms Funeral Home. For more information and to donate, go to gofundme.com/ viewing-expenses-for-michaellong.

Motorcyclist killed, passenger injured in State Road 11 crash A motorcycle crash on State Road 11 killed a motorcyclist and injured his passenger late the night of June 1.

The motorcyclist — whose name has not yet been released by the Florida Highway Patrol, pending notification of kin — was on a 2001 Suzuki GSX13 heading south on S.R. 11 just south of County Road 135 South at about 11 p.m., according to an FHP news release.

The motorcyclist lost control in a curve, and the motorcyclist and a passenger, 32-year-old Titusville resident Leslie Esteves Ramos, were both thrown from the motorcycle.

The motorcyclist died at the scene of the crash, and Ramos was airlifted to Halifax Health Medical Center in critical condition with “very serious injuries,” according to the news release.

NASCAR driver dedicates pediatric playroom at Florida Hospital Memorial

Renner will serve as speaker for the 2022-2024 term.

Florida House District 24 Rep. Paul Renner of Palm Coast has been elected speaker of the Florida House of Representatives for the 20222024 term.

Renner was elected by his peers in the 27-member freshman Republican class June 30 in a closed meeting at an Orlando hotel. Other candidates for the seat were Rep. Byron Donalds of Naples; Rep. Erin Grall of Vero Beach and Rep. Jamie Grant of Tampa.

This year’s process — a formal vote — differed from previous years,’ in which candidates would collect pledge cards.

“At the end of the day, we ended up with a good, effective leader for us going forward,” said fellow freshman Republican Rep. Tom Leek, who represents District 25 and had supported Renner.

Renner won in the first round of voting, Leek said.

Renner’s election to the speakership is contingent on the Republican Party retaining its majority in the Florida House through the upcoming elections.

The speaker presides over the House sessions for a twoyear term, and has the power to select chairmen for committees, and appoint their members.

The current speaker is District 37 Rep. Richard Corcoran of Land o’ Lakes. Corcoran will be succeeded as speaker by 110th District Rep. Jose Oliva of Hialeah, then by 65th District Rep. Chris Sprowls of Palm Harbor before Renner’s term begins.

Renner was first elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2015 in a special election to fill a seat vacated by Travis Hutson, who left his House seat to run for a seat on the Florida Senate, which he won. Renner was then reelected.

It’s not unusual to find NASCAR driver Jamie McMurray surrounded by cars, and Thursday, June 29, was no exception — except he was at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center, and the cars were murals on the walls of the newly opened inpatient pediatric playroom.

“As a parent, I’ve experienced having to come back to the hospital with your child,” McMurray said. “I think it is amazing to have a room like this for kids who are patients, or even their brother or sister, to come and play and take their minds off everything they are going through while they are here in the hospital.”

The 10-bed inpatient pediatric unit is in the spirit of Daytona Beach, complete with designs of ocean waves, palm trees, dolphins, and of course, cars racing around a track. Even the furniture is race track themed with chairs in the shape of tires, tool chests and blimps.

In the past five years, the city of Palm Coast’s population has grown by 14.8%, which is more than double the national growth rate. Also, the number of jobs in the city has grown by more than 11,000 in five years. Those were among the statistics shared by Mayor Milissa Holland to the crowd of about 150 who packed the Florida Hospital Flagler Education Center to hear her speak on June 29.

Shopping local is one key to improving a local economy and infrastructure, according to Holland.

Palm Coast generates about $3.6 million a year in sales tax, she said.

“Every time you shop in Palm Coast, the dollars stay here,” Holland said. “They go right into a revenue stream, and we’re able to build capital projects with that and offset your tax dollars.”

The fuel tax generated in Palm Coast goes entirely into the maintenance of the roadways, Holland noted.

Holland hopes local residents will become shop-local ambassadors.

The city wants the program to engage the next generation of leaders by giving them the skills to make a difference in Palm Coast, Holland said.

The Owls at Old Kings Elementary School flew from a “C” to an “A” over the last school year. It was also the only elementary school in Flagler County to earn an “A” this school year.

Old Kings Principal Benjamin Osypian credits a shared vision for success, combined with before-school and after-school tutoring efforts and the marine flagship program, for the school’s improved grade.

The hands-on experiences the marine science program helps excite students to learn the material, he said.

“There’s a very concrete approach by giving students hands-on opportunities like labs and by going through the scientific process, as well as doing a spiral review with certain questions that they could be

exposed to on the test,” Osypian said.

Osypian said many teachers dedicated themselves to tutoring sessions before and after school, as well as Saturday camps, to leave no Owl behind.

“An ‘A’ is representative of the total hard work everyone has put in, not just the teachers or the students or the administration, but it’s a combined effort,” Osypian said. “We appreciate the support all the parents and families have given their students to show that success.”

Osypian said Old Kings is taking steps to ensure it maintains the “A.” There is going to be a continued focus on the marine flagship program, which will be getting a dedicated outdoor learning space. The school will also focus on its bottom quartile in the upcoming school year to make sure tutoring is provided for students who need extra help.

During that time, the Frisbee group migrated from the Indian Trails Sports Complex to Rymfire to Wadsworth and any other field that allowed them to play.

After Holland Park reopened on Sunday, June 16, the groups began to notify everyone on its Facebook page, and the crew returned to Holland Park for the first time on Father’s Day. “It was like a mini-reunion for us,” Birney laughed. “It’s been a long wait, but I think it’s been worth it. I’m looking forward to all the games yet to come, and the park is definitely more beautiful than ever.””

Alex Russell, one of Birney’s former classmates, was also thrilled to be playing at Holland Park, although he recognizes that he’s no longer the energetic teenager he once was.

“The biggest difference is the age group,” he said. “We were high-schoolers at the time. Also, there used to be a sidewalk and trees that made a good boundary for us. While the park has changed a lot, it’s still the same field. But, I’m just glad we got our field back.”

everal former AP physics classmates had used James. F. Holland Memorial Park as their ultimate Frisbee destination for 10 years until the park closed. After its reopening, John Birney and his friends are happy to be playing again at what they consider to be their home.

After an exam in 2005, Birney’s physics teacher allowed him and several others to play Frisbee in a field near the classroom. The group began meeting weekly at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Holland Park.

“We really liked playing,” Birney said, “and we noticed there was really no group or anything in the area, so we formed one along the way.”

Over the course of 10 years, more locals joined in with the originals, and the game became a routine for everyone, including college students returning from break.

Then the park closed down for renovations on Feb. 2, 2015.

“We were sort of shocked,” Birney said. “We always kept to one end of the park, so we never really noticed that it was in need of repair.”

They expected renovations to take months or a year, so they were disappointed when the

t’s no secret among my friends and family that I’m … let’s say “frugal.” But, when there’s a need to invest, I try to lay aside my “cheap instincts” for the greater deal.

The more I think about travel sports, the more I have to fight those instincts and try to see the big picture. Some of the benefits of playing travel sports are obvious: travel, more exposure, more game experience, maintaining game shape and ultimately reaching the next levels.

Very few — if any — professional athletes complain that they practiced or played too much of their sport before becoming a pro. Getting in those extra practice reps and/or games often separates great athletes from the rest.

When I talk to student-athletes, I often give out statistics of the number of peers playing their sport versus the number of professional spots. Then I ask what they are willing to do to get a spot. A realistic answer should include more practice time than what is given by the coach.

As athletes better-develop their craft while traveling from city to city to play, they will become known, and coaches and onlookers at games will begin to talk about them. These days, a good high school athlete is wellknown before he participates in any school sport because everyone knows him through AAU and other travel leagues.

For some athletes, sports let them see the rest of their state, country and even the world. As they partake in cultures different from those where they grew up, student-athletes tend to gain a better understanding and appreciation of other people.

But travel sports can be costly.

I recent spoke with a singleparent mom who drives her daughter around to play travel basketball. Before our talk, I pictured travel ball as a team journeying from city to city, playing games and then returning home.

This parent told me how much time she took off from work to get her daughter to the games.

She also mentioned hotel fees and food, uniform and tournament costs. I was taken aback.

Travel ball doesn’t come cheap. So, before I would buy into it, I would have to know there’s a commitment from my children to be great at their sport. Travel ball is not for those “trying out” a sport; it’s for those trying to be great at a sport.

FPC Bulldogs attain Disney All America status Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs wrestlers John Johnson, Tyrone Jones, Eddie Bryant, Tyler Irigoyen, and Vincent Ebanks earned individual All America honors at the AAU Wrestling Scholastic Duals on Friday, June 16, at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports.

Collectively, the Bulldogs went 10-4 and placed fifth as a team.

Johnson and Ebanks both went undefeated at 14-0 and 11-0 respectively. Jones went 12-2, and Bryant 9-2. Irigoyen went 11-3.

The Bulldogs became Disney All Americans for the fourth year in a row.

Mike DeAugustino helped Central Florida Wrestling Academy place third with his 10-2 record, earning All America honors in the All Star Division. His only two losses came by nationallyranked Jordan Crace (No. 14) and the nation’s top-ranked wrestler, Patrick Glory.

Carl Delesdernier hopes to become a sensei one day and pass on his knowledge to students who will then pass it on to others.

EARLY APTITUDE WITH COMPUTERS Carl Delesdernier took apart his first computer at 7 years old. He would correctly put it back together a few days later.

Nowadays, Carl Delesdernier —a system administrator at Daytona State College —carries himself with confidence, thanks to jukido. He recognized his need for better self-defense skills at an early age.

Growing up in Miami, Delesdernier got into a fight during grade school, and his mom was attacked while pregnant. Looking back on those instances, Delesdernier wishes he would’ve known back then what he knows now.

To prevent anything similar from happening to himself or his family, Delesdernier began learning martial arts. After short stints with other practices, he joined the Jukido Academy at 16 years old. Throughout the last 12 years, Delesdernier has used his training to stop fights and to de-escalate would-be physical altercations.

“I do keep in mind that I only know what I know and nothing more,” Delesdernier said.

Between school, working as many as three jobs at one time

and a bad knee injury that sidelined him for nearly two years, Delesdernier is currently training for his upcoming black belt testing.

Keeping wildlife off your property is as simple as not feeding them

It’s the season for snakes and litters of wild animals, and an important time to keep cats inside and dogs on short leashes.

A

few weeks ago, I posted a photo I took of a coyote bounding down John Anderson Drive in Ormondby-the-Sea. It was dusk, and she was minding her own business, not even giving me more than a casual glance as I popped out of the car to try to capture a photo.

I posted the photo on the Ormond Beach Observer’s Facebook page with the intent of alerting neighbors that small pets shouldn’t be outside unattended, especially at dawn and dusk.

“Typically they will be out at dawn and dusk — typically,” Kinard said. “If they are nursing mothers, they may be out earlier to get away from the litter, or to food and water.”

Just because a traditionally nocturnal animal is out doesn’t mean it’s rabid. There are many reasons raccoons, coyotes and other wildlife are seen during the day.

Kinard said we are into “baby season,” and the reason

the larger animals are seen in backyards is because often that’s where the food, supplied by homeowners, is located.

“Bird feeders, trash cans, leftover food left out for the cats, all make you part of the food chain for these animals,” she said. “You can’t just put food out for one (type of animal); if there is food, they all will come.”

Several years ago, she said, there was a bobcat in Palm Coast who jumped a privacy fence to get to the animals

that feed at the bird feeders at night: rats, raccoons and other rodents. On that night, the family’s Yorkshire Terrier was in the back yard. The family was with the dog and managed to get the dog in and slam the screen door on the big cat.

The dog was fine — but it’s a reminder as to why it’s important to watch our pets closely.

We have plumbago in our front yard that has recently captured the attention of both of our dogs when they are out. It could be our resident box turtles, and I don’t want the dogs bothering them, or it could be something like a snake or raccoon that, if feeling threatened, could attack my dogs. The dog’s noses, and the rest of them, are kept away.

“The snakes are hatching too, usually under bushes,” Kinard said. “It’s very important not to allow your dogs to get into those bushes or near bodies of water [where alligators could be lurking].”

As far as the coyote, Kinard said wild animals have also been on the move.

“With all of the rain, they may have been flooded out of their homes and are looking for another,” she said.

Her advice to keeping harmony with nature is simple: “Keep your dogs on a short leash and don’t let them go into the bushes.”
