City Council presses for action on Florida Park Drive traffic issues Councilwoman Heidi Shipley proposed adding stop signs to deter drivers from using it as a cut-through.

Palm Coast’s City Council wants the city to take action to reduce traffic issues on Florida Park Drive.

Councilwoman Heidi Shipley asked to discuss the issue during the council’s April 10 workshop.

She had a proposal, which had first come up at a recent community meeting: adding stop signs on Florida Park Drive to push drivers to take other routes rather than using Florida Park Drive as a cut-through.

“When I was up in Massachusetts, we had a road that we did the same thing with; we’d cut down this road, and everyone used to cut down the road,” Shipley said. “And last time I was up there, it was stop signs put up. So, I made a conscious decision not to go down that road anymore, because I knew I had to stop at every stop sign. I think the same thing would work there.”

Shipley suggested that the city could start with two signs to see if they would reduce the traffic.

Councilman Steven Nobile liked the idea.

“That sounds like it would, it could, be a deterrent,” he said.

Mayor Milissa Holland said she thought adding stop signs would cause backups along the road and make it hard for residents to exit their driveways.

“Now, it flows,” she said.

“Whether we like it or not, it’s a road that people utilize. I’ve utilized it since 1987. ... These residents are not going to be pleased waiting to get out of their driveways.”

Nobile said they’re waiting now — not because of backups, but because they have to wait for an opening in steadily moving traffic. And he didn’t think a stop sign would cause backups.

“What we’re doing is we lessen the traffic, so by lessening the traffic, I don’t see backups happening,” he said.

Councilman Nick Klufas said making traffic stop repeatedly would increase vehicle emissions on the road, since vehicles release more chemicals to start moving than to continue movement.

Councilman Bob Cuff agreed that emissions are a concern, and said that if the city adds stop signs, it should also monitor emissions levels.

But Nobile wanted to see something change.

“Over the last three years that I’ve been here, we’ve come up with more things than I can shake a stick at, and none of them get done,” he said. “And it appears that it doesn’t get done because we don’t want to do it, not because it can’t or it shouldn’t.”

over the years, but not taken action on — road coatings that can reduce sound from passing cars, and shrubbery that can eat emissions.

“The problems is, it’s never getting — nobody does it. We just sit here, we talk about it, and they’re good ideas. ... I just think if we did these few little things that won’t hinder the people who live there, will increase the beautification in the area and help them with the pollution and the noise. I just sit there and I shake my head and scratch my chin and wonder why, why don’t we help these people and do it?”

there had also been bad ideas thrown around in the past, and he’d rejected those.

But, he said, “These items were passed up to administration and never came back with any options that said, ‘We can do this,’ or, ‘We can’t do this.’”

City Manger Jim Landon said that the city can’t just add stop signs at will.

“Stop signs actually by law, you have to do a warrant study to install them. There’s actually technical requirements by law as to where they can go,” he said.

“If they’re not warranted, and we put them up, and there is an accident ... then the city has a lot of

liability. So there are some legal ramifications that you need to be aware of.”

He suggested that if the council wants to pursue the idea, it order a study to see if the signs are warranted.

An initial study several years ago found that emissions on the road are not too high, that the road is not at its maximum vehicular capacity, and that most people using it don’t speed excessively.

Nobile suggested looking again at a proposal which had been discussed in 2015 to have Lassiter Transportation Group hold a more detailed $42,000 traffic study of the street.

he Flagler County Fairgrounds were filled with the smell of barbecue and the sounds of children on carnival rides during the Flagler County Fair and Rockin’ Rib Fest on Saturday, April 7.

The weekend featured Belle City Amusement Rides, barbecue from local vendors, carnival games, live entertainment and 4H and FFA livestock sales.

While the rib fest was held Friday to Sunday, the fair started Wednesday and went through the weekend.

The live entertainment was presented by Jurassic Rock on Friday night, Kids Rock the Nation on Saturday afternoon, Anthony Wild and the Suspects on Saturday late afternoon, Renegade and Smokin’ tribute bands on Saturday night and Category 5 on Sunday.

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office has opened an investigation into the death of a 25-year-old woman, Brandi Celenza, who was found dead on Felter Lane in Palm Coast, according to an FCSO news release.

Sheriff’s Office deputies and Palm Coast Fire Rescue responded to the home at around 10:38 a.m. the morning of Saturday, April 7, and found Clenza dead.

A portion of Felter Lane was temporarily blocked as deputies, detectives and crime scene investigators conducted the investigation.

“We are in the early stages of a death investigation,” Sheriff Rick Staly said from the scene, according to the news release.

“While the investigation is ongoing and we do not have much information to release at this time, I want the community to know that there is no threat or cause for concern.”

A woman driving with a suspended license was arrested on April 6 after she was stopped by deputies and failed several sobriety exercises, according to an arrest report by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies stopped Cheyenne Lemon, 27, of Daytona Beach, near Deen Road and West Highway 100 in Bunnell after observing Lemon swerving in and out of the lane.

Lemon told deputies her name was Tinsley Renay Cribbs and said her birthday was on Sept. 15, 1986. However, the real Tinsley, whose middle name is Regina, was born on a different date.

Lemon had a hard time focusing when responding to deputies’ questions, and her eyelids were droopy, according to the report.

She struggled to perform several sobriety exercises, including the horizontal gaze nystagmus, walk-and-turn, oneleg stand, finger-to-nose and the modified Romberg balance.

Upon a search of Lemon’s purse, deputies found four syringes, three small plastic bags

containing what was confirmed to be cocaine, one metal spoon with burn marks and white residue and one glass pipe with burn marks and white residue.

Inside one of the syringes was a clear liquid that tested positive as heroin.

After arriving at the Flagler County Inmate Facility, Lemon agreed to use an intoxilyzer. The results were .000 BAC. She was charged with giving a false name while detained, felony driving with a suspended license, driving under the influence, possession of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Flu shots coming for students Flagler Schools is partnering with the Florida Department of Health in Flagler County to provide flu shots for students.

Parents can opt into the program by signing a release.

Last year, a third-party contractor provided the vaccinations.

This year, the Health Department itself will provide the shots on the school campuses, according to a presentation at the School Board’s April 3 workshop.

The district’s current contract with the Health Department for flu shots runs through June and will renew automatically next year.

Also at the April 3 workshop, the board discussed the district’s process of seeking bids for firms to perform upcoming audits.

The audits would cover the fiscal year that runs from July 1, 2017, through June 30, 2018, and the following two additional fiscal years, with a possible extension of two additional, one-year periods.

The board is also preparing to advertise an invitation to bid for a contract for pond maintenance: The district’s lands include 28 retention ponds that must be kept clear of excessive algae and aquatic weeds.

The Flagler County administrator and county attorney will no longer be on three-year contracts with the county. Instead, they’ll be on open-ended contracts that allow for the County Commission to fire them at any public meeting.

Their current contracts are set to expire in February 2019.

“What this does, is it renews the agreement ... public meeting to public meeting,” County Attorney Al Hadeed told the commission at an April 2 commission meeting, explaining the proposed new contracts. “The prior agreements up to this time were threeyear terms that then got renewed for three years, where we were insulated from termination unless it was because of misdeeds, violation of law, etcetera.”

The change, Hadeed said, would not change any other part of his or County Administrator Craig Coffey’s agreements: provisions for pay, professional development, leave and severance would stay the same. Coffey’s current base pay is $158,787 and Hadeed’s is $209,643.

“So essentially, the net effect of it is it takes out the rolling threeyear periods and substitutes in its place literally an employment term that runs public meeting to public meeting,” Hadeed said.

“We’ve both been here as your professionals in excess of 10 years,” Coffey said. “I know some of the board members are newer.

You’ve all had a chance to spend a year with us, you’ve all had a

chance to evaluate us as new board members in addition to the members that have been on for a long time. As you can see, we have a lot of issues that we deal with, and we’re both proud and honored to serve you and the citizens of Flagler County.”

The board approved the contract changes unanimously.

Airport is and will remain a boondoggle

Dear Editor: We need new representation that will actually address the safety, quality of life and abuse of our tax dollars the Flagler County Commissioners continue to blindly support.

County Commission Chairmen Greg Hansen and County Administrator Craig Coffey oppose House Bill 7078 because “the amount of money that the FAA has that we can tap into is going to go down.”

This bill should be supported to lower our costs to airlines that will benefit from lower fuel taxes. Because Flagler Airport only has private planes, it will not impact the flight school pilots.

Perhaps county officials need to first manage the training school airport and accept the fact that it has shown and continues to show failed business efforts with little or no legitimate future growth on the horizon: nDespite the tower, pilots utilize visual flight rules. nThe Cakes Across America company that moved to the airport with Community Development Block Grant money later relocated to Florida Park Drive. nThe county put up $2 million to help build a Ginn Corp. headquarters at the airport in 2004, but Ginn backed out after the building was built. nEmbry Riddle Aeronautical University created a commercial airline pilot training at the airport in 2004 and signed a 10-year lease, but abandoned the building in 2010 at significant loss to taxpayers. nThe county lowered rent to attract small manufacturer Micro Hose to the 19,000-square-foot former ERAU hanger. Micro Hose cut back dramatically and didn’t produce the jobs anticipated.

The list just goes on and on.

Both city-owned Deland and Ormond Beach Airports have extensive business parks.

Flagler Airport will always lack the needed space/infrastructure to develop a viable industrial business park.

The Flagler Airport under the Flagler County Commission is and will remain a boondoggle.

Stop spending our tax money on the failed efforts to grow the airport.

Dear Editor: This is a heads up to the large percentage of Palm Coast homeowners that have PEP tanks that process and pump their home’s sewer water.

The tank, which is buried in your yard, and all of its components are owned, operated and maintained by the City of Palm Coast Utility Department.

Each PEP tank system has an alarm box attached to the home designed to sound a loud alarm with a flashing red light when the system malfunctions.

If there is a malfunction, there is the real possibility that sewer water can backup into your home causing a lot of damage.

I can attest to that. A backup occurred when my PEP tank pump and the alarm both malfunctioned. I’ll spare readers the ugly results.

I discovered that most basic homeowner’s insurance policies don’t cover sewer water backup and in fact it is most often a policy exclusion... as was the case with mine and I suspect many others. I have since added this type of coverage to my policy (only an extra $11 policy premium increase). I strongly recommend checking your homeowner’s policy for this coverage exclusion.

It’s disturbing that the Palm Coast Utility Department has officially informed their customers that a program is in place with the promise that all PEP tank systems will be inspected and preventative maintenance performed twice per year.

However, although the Utility Department touted on their website that the preventative maintenance program goals have “been consistently met or exceeded,” in fact, this bi-annual inspection program does not actually exist and it’s not clear if it ever existed.

When I posed questions about the purported regular inspections and requested dates they had supposedly inspected my PEP tank system, the next day reference to the bi-annual program mysteriously disappeared from the Utility Department’s website.

So, beware if you are a homeowner relying on the Utility Department’s promise to look after your PEP tank system to prevent malfunctions, sadly you have been misled.

Editor’s note: City spokeswoman Cindi Lane acknowledged that the city’s utility department did, until recently, have on its webpage an erroneous mention of bi-annual inspections of PEP tanks.

The city’s longstanding policy, she said, is to inspect 20% of its 12,900 PEP tanks annually — so inspections are once every five years, not once every six months.

City staff did remove the mention of bi-annual inspections after a resident contacted the city, Lane said.

In addition, she wrote in an email to the Observer, “Hurricanes set us back, because we have to shift our resources to storm-related work. For FY2017, we completed the Performance Measure at 61.5% (we inspected 1,581 of the 2,580 goal). With Hurricane Irma and the nor’easters of Fall 2017, we are again behind because we missed the first quarter (Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, 2017). But inspections resumed in January 2018.

Also, we are now completing inspections on the tanks when we are called out for an alarm.

When we change out pumps and floats, we go ahead and complete the entire inspection at that time. We continue to perform as much preventive maintenance as possible including smoke testing, CCTV, and lining of gravity sewer and manholes.”

After 15 years, we can say from experience that none of those predictions have come true. The U.S. deficit with China has ballooned from $83 billion in 2000 to $366 billion in 2015. This is a total of $3.6 trillion in deficits with China.

During this same period, the U.S. lost 5 million manufacturing jobs.

China plays by its own rules and continually challenges the U.S. by ignoring free-market rules and doing whatever it takes to capture market share.

The U.S. has looked the other way for years when China breaks the rules.

China is not a free-market economy and the U.S. continues to act as if it is, and is playing by the rules.

Here is a partial list of China’s non-free-market strategies. China manipulates its currency to keep the U.S. dollar value high, so Chinese companies have a cost advantage. China owns and subsidizes many companies.

According to an Economic Panel Security Commission’s 2015 report to Congress, China’s government conducts and sponsors a massive cyber espionage operation aimed at stealing trade secrets and intelligence from U.S. corporations. As a condition of accessing the Chinese markets, China requires U.S. companies that build plants in china to create joint ventures with local companies and share with them their latest technologies.

Every Congress and administration since President Clinton has ignored China’s illegal strategies.

Instead of facing up to the problems, the U.S. has chosen dialog, diplomacy and collision avoidance over enforcement.

By this, China is the winner and is a rogue nation whose reaction to our diplomacy is to be ever more aggressive because we have not retaliated. That is, not until our President Donald Trump has finally stood up to China.

Instead of Matt Walsh, owner of the Observer, commending our president for finally standing up for America, he writes an article on how tariffs have hurt the newspaper industry.

President Trump is not using a tariff on China to just benefit one industry. It is a diplomatic way of bringing them to the table to discuss free and even trade.

The Reagan administration imposed a tariff on Germany and Japan when they started manipulating their currencies.

The tariff was reduced as the they started to play fair. The same strategy will work with China.

Let’s stop attacking our president every time he tries to stand up for America.

County fortifies 2.7 miles of coastline

By April 6, the 75th day of Flagler County’s dunes restoration project, the county had fortified dunes along 2.7 miles of coastline, according to a county government news release.

“We have a great team, and everyone is working very hard on this critical project,” said County Engineer Faith Alkhatib.

“We have repositioned our staging area to the end of 16th Road, Old Salt Park. We reopened MalaCompra Park this morning (except the southern parking area).”

Old Salt Park, located on 16th Road, is closed to accommodate the dunes restoration project staff and equipment.

The next segment of work scheduled is to complete the last 500-foot stretch of beach adjacent and north of 16th Road.

This section of work is scheduled for completion by mid-week – dependent of tides, weather, and other variables.

Dunes construction is complete in the following locations: Washington Oaks Gardens State Park, Marineland Acres, Bay Drive Park, Sea Colony, Armand Beach, and MalaCompra Park.

“Dodge the Dunes” signage and the vegetative plantings that will complete the dunes restoration will begin soon in the areas where these areas.

In general, Flagler County is restoring the dunes in sections

from north to south.

“As always, we appreciate everyone’s patience while we have Old Salt Park closed,” County Administrator Craig Coffey said.

“Parks and the beach is open everywhere else, but we are asking everyone to avoid the active work zone for their own safety.”

In related work, the seawall project in Painters Hill is on schedule. The work should be substantially complete by April 22.

“There is some dunes work that will need to be completed in front of the seawalls once that construction is finished,” Alkhatib said.

Enlisted high school grads to get ‘Military Service Honor Cord’ The Flagler County Veterans Advisory Council is hosting a Military Service Honor Cord ceremony for graduating high school seniors who have already enlisted in the military.

City Council candidate and former mayor Jon Netts: ‘My vision is strategic growth’ ‘Growth for growths’ sake makes no sense to me,’ Netts said at a candidate forum April 4.

Growth for the sake of growth does not make sense, current Palm Coast City Council candidate and former mayor and councilman Jon Netts said at a candidate forum April 4.

It’s costly: adding infrastructure to support growth isn’t a one-time expense; it’s an ongoing expense because infrastructure takes maintenance. And the maintenance falls to taxpayers.

“My vision,” Netts said, “is strategic growth.”

Netts had been scheduled to speak at the forum alongside Heidi Shipley, the incumbent candidate for the District 2 seat Netts is running for.

But Shipley didn’t show up: She called the forum’s organizers, the Flagler County Republican Club, the afternoon of the event to say

she couldn’t attend because she was covering a work shift for a colleague who’d just been diagnosed with cancer.

So Netts answered the organizers’ questions on his own.

On a question about what he’d like to see in a new city manager — longtime City Manager Jim Landon has announced plans to retire in the spring of 2019 — Netts said the city needs someone with vision and initiative.

He used an example he’s used often in the past: Three frogs are sitting on lily pad, and one decides to jump off. How many frogs are still on the lily pad? Three, Netts said: Deciding to do something isn’t the same thing as doing it.

And, Netts said, “they have to know how to run a city, but that’s the day-to-day operation.

Beyond that, we need a city manager who understands who we are, why we are, why we came to

be.”

Another question asked Netts about the city’s new “Innovation Team,” which is tasked with generating ideas to invigorate a downtown area, spur civic engagement and develop the city as a “smart city.”

Part of that, Netts said, is attracting the right kind of employer.

“We don’t need any more lowly income retail jobs,” he said. “We need jobs that have good salaries based on the ability to do good work. We don’t need any smokestacks; we don’t need any refineries. What we need is the intellectual aspect of business.”

Answering another question, Netts suggested that the city hire an ombudsman tasked with working with businesses that are seeking to move to Palm Coast in order to smooth their transition into the city.

Former elections supervisor Kimberle Weeks found guilty of illegally recording others’ conversations The jury deliberated for over two hours before finding Weeks guilty of seven felony counts.

Flagler County’s former elections supervisor, Kimberle Weeks, is guilty of illegally recording other people’s conversations and then disseminating one such recording, a jury of four women and two men found after deliberating for more than 2 hours on April 5.

The trial proceeded for three days after an initial day of jury selection. Weeks was charged with six counts of interception of a wire communication plus one count of disclosure of such a communication. All are third-degree felonies.

The defense did not put on a case and call its own witnesses.

Weeks’ legal team is planning for an appeal, said defense attorney Kevin Kulik.

The prosecution argued that Weeks had taped six people without their consent and then played one of the recorded conversations to other people, and that those actions are illegal under Florida law.

The defense did not argue that Weeks didn’t make the recordings, although it did argue that the prosecution hadn’t proved that she’d disseminated one. Instead, the defense argued that making the recordings did not violate the law. Since the conversations

Weeks recorded involved public officials and public employees speaking about government business, Weeks’ attorneys said, the recordings should be considered legal: Florida law generally prohibits people from recording others’ speech without their consent, but there are exceptions, and one is for public speech at public meetings.

That left the jury in an unusual position: Rather than determining whether or not the defendant, Weeks, had committed a particular action or not, they were instead tasked with determining whether or not the actions she’d committed were actually illegal.

Judge Margaret Hudson barred the prosecution and the defense from presenting the jury with a definition of a “public meeting”: the jury was left to make the determination based on “common sense.”

Five of the six individuals Weeks was charged with taping were public officials or employees: Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner; Florida Elections Division Attorney Gary Holland; Florida Assistant Attorney General Gerry Hammond; Whitney Anderson, a Florida Attorney General’s office employee who took consumer complaints; and Virginia Smith, Palm Coast’s city clerk. a private attorney who represented the Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections.

Detzner, Holland and Labasky were taped in the course of one April 3, 2014, phone conversation with Weeks. That was the conversation that Weeks, according to the prosecution, later played for others. She also taped an April 4, 2014, conversation between herself and the two people she’d played it to, and that conversation, according to the prosecution, made it clear the two other individuals had heard the recording of Weeks speaking with Detzner, Holland and Labasky. The defense argued that the recording of Weeks speaking to the other two individuals didn’t prove she’d played the Detzner tape to them rather than described it to them.

Weeks recorded Hammond and Anderson in two separate recordings on Sept. 18, 2014. In both cases, Weeks had called to

inquire about government issues.

by Weeks on April 7, 2014, after Weeks called her to discuss election preparations related to the city of Palm Coast.

The prosecution said those conversations were not public meetings: The individuals Weeks taped were in their offices, speaking on the phone, and had a reasonable expectation that they would not be recorded.

Also, the prosecution argued public meetings have certain characteristics — like being noticed to the public and open to public attendance — that the conversations Weeks recorded did not.

“Just because you’re a government employee doesn’t mean that you don’t have a right to consent to being recorded,” Assistant State Attorney Sharleen Sullivan said.

What’s protected, Sullivan added, is “not the topic, it’s the parties.

All the parties have to consent.”

Assistant State Attorney Jason Lewis said the law protects recording of “public communications uttered at a public meeting,”

not simply any “public communications anytime you’re a public official,” regardless of context.

“They want you to think that anytime a public official communicates something, that that’s what is covered by the statute, and that’s patently wrong,” Lewis said.

In the prosecution’s closing argument, Sullivan quoted Weeks’ own words, preserved in her recording of the two people she’d allegedly played the Detzner recording to: “I don’t know if it’s legal to tape after you let them know that you’re taping it, or not. ... I don’t know if what I did was legal or not.”

“No, it was not legal,” Sullivan told the jury. “It is not legal to record a telephone conversation with anyone without their consent.”

The defense suggested that Weeks’ intent to record sprung out of her concern for open government, but Sullivan pointed out that Weeks had also taped her own neighbor, Shannon Brown, when Brown had a personal conversation concerning private family matters with Weeks in Weeks’ front yard.

Given Weeks’ recording of Brown — which the prosecution played for the jury — was Weeks’ intent in recording for any public good, “or was the intent to mock, to insult, for her own personal gain?” Sullivan asked.

Detzner, Holland and Labasky, Weeks asked Detzner — on tape, since she was already recording — if she could record the call, which Detzner had placed to Weeks at her request to talk about a dispute she was having with the city of Palm Coast over use of city facilities for an election.

Detzner replied, “For what purpose do you want to record this conversation? ... I’m not comfortable with that. ... I don’t think that’s necessary, Kimberle.

I’m calling you as a courtesy.”

Weeks said “OK,” but continued recording.

The fact that Weeks had asked Detzner’s permission to record, Sullivan said, indicated that Weeks knew that the conversation wasn’t a public meeting: If it had been, she would not have needed to ask permission.

Weeks had told Detzner during the call that she wanted to record in order to be able to inform the Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections president about what happened in the discussion.

But that didn’t make sense, Sullivan said, because Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections attorney Ron Labasky was on the call — and, as Deztner told Weeks after she’d asked to record, Labasky could brief the FSASE president.

Instead, Sullivan said, Weeks wanted to record the call so that she could disseminate it and mock it, as she did when she played it to two other people.

In her recorded conversation with those two other individuals, which was played for the jury, Weeks called Detzner an “ignorant bastard” and a “lying bas-

tard,” and twice referred to Gary Holland as a “dumb piece of s--t.”

In the same recording, after saying she didn’t know if what she’d done was legal, Weeks added that she wasn’t going to share it, but, “I’m going to have it for my own reference.”

The fact that Weeks was hiding the recording, Sullivan said, belied the defense’s suggestion that Weeks’ recording was for the benefit of the public.

Weeks taped Whitney Anderson, a Florida Attorney General’s office employee who took consumer complaints, when Weeks called the Attorney General’s office to complain about local election issues. Similarly, Weeks taped Gerry Hammond when Weeks called the Attorney General’s office with other complaints. Both testified that Weeks didn’t tell them they were being recorded.

‘ESSENTIALLY A PUBLIC MEETING’

Defense attorney Kevin Kulik, presenting the defense’s closing arguments, said the definition of “wire interception” states that it refers to circumstances justifying an expectation that the conversation would not be recorded, and that it does not mean any “public communication uttered at a public meeting.”

“This is essentially a public meeting,” Kulik said of the conversations.

Kulik noted that the judge had told the jury not to consider the prosecution’s statement that a public meeting has to be noticed as a statement of law.

“The prosecutor, again, tries to put ideas in your head about what the law is, what’s a public meeting,” Kulik said. “It’s up to you to decide what is a public meeting.”

As for the call with Detzner, Holland and Labasky, Kulik said, the fact that the call was a conference call undermined any claims that Detzner, Holland and Labasky had an expectation that the call wouldn’t be recorded.

Kulik also implied that the primary investigator in the case, Florida Department of Law Enforcement investor Phil Lindley, who has since retired, could have been biased against Weeks and that his bias might have affected the alleged victims, who’d all testified that they did not know they were being recorded and expected they would not be recorded.

“The jury has to decide the credibility of the the witnesses and decide whether they have some bias or interest in the case,” Kulik said. “If you doubt (Lindley’s) credibility and decide, ‘You know what? This guy had to know this was some kind of political mission to get Mrs. Weeks,’ you can disregard his testimony.”

Lindley was not a Flagler County resident and had told the jury he did not know anyone in Flagler County when he began working on the case.

Weeks, Kulik said, had recorded people because public officials were “giving her the run-around, all of them. ... She wants to fix it, they’re giving her the run-around. ... They know it was all public business, but it might be a little embarrassing to them politically.”

The jury, after beginning its deliberations, asked to hear that recording again. It then found Weeks guilty on all seven felony counts.

Weeks will be sentenced at a future date.

As the Bulldogs’ Shawn Gordon paces his way around the track at Spruce Creek High School during the 1,600-meter run, you can catch a glimpse of the writing on his arm. When Bulldogs’ coach David Halliday holds up his hands, shouting at his sprinters to run faster, you can see it again, written in neat, black ink along the right forearm of Flagler Palm Coast’s longtime track coach: #FORALLEN.

The hashtag decorated bodies of several Bulldogs — boys and girls — who competed in the Five Star Conference Championship on Wednesday, April 4.

It was in honor of teammate Allen Roberson, who was diagnosed with a mixed germ cell brain tumor just before the start of spring break.

Although the prognosis is good, according to Halliday, the promising sophomore’s season ended at that very moment.

On the final stretch of the 1,600-meter run, Gordon thought of his teammate, who went through his first round of chemotherapy nearly a week ago. Gordon chased down two runners to take first in the event with a time of 4:30.68.

recently had the pleasure of teaching the game of golf — the sport I love most in this world — to two of the sons of my editor, Brian McMillan.

The eldest boy wanted to try out for Matanzas High School’s golf team once he entered ninth grade. He’d never really touched a club before.

I had a golf club in my hand from the time I could walk (no, really). I learned the game from my father, a Class-A PGA professional, and I currently maintain a plus-3 handicap (that’s three below scratch for those of you who are unfamiliar with the handicap system).

So, I offered my services.

We met at Palm Harbor Golf Club on the morning of Saturday, April 7, and beat balls for about an hour. I showed them — to the best of my abilities — the proper grip, takeaway, down swing and finish.

And at least for the older of the two boys, there were some promising results. For someone who’d only ever hit Wiffle balls in his life and had never had any real instruction, his swing showed promise; flaws that needed to be worked out, but promise.

I went home thinking: What if he had started playing earlier in his life? What if he actually dedicated himself to practicing and competing? How good could he be?

Now, I’m not saying playing at the professional level is likely. That’s not the reality in any sport. But the chances of attaining some success in sports should logically increase if you starting playing, seriously playing, at a younger age.

I must point out, you should only play a sport(s) if you want to, and you should only dedicate yourself if you love it.

But if you find that you do have that passion, that innerdrive, here’s some advice: Start early in your life and play as often as possible. You never know what you’re capable of until you try it.

#FORALLEN “When the two guys ahead of me took off on the fourth lap, I knew that I had to pick it up,” Gordon said. “I worked on my speed the past few weeks, so I really trusted my training.”

By the third lap, Gordon was 20 meters behind second and 30 meters behind first.

“Then I just kicked it up,” he said.

“And I prayed.”

Gordon was part of a boys team that edged out Spruce Creek for the title. However, the Hawks returned the favor on the girls’ side.

“The girls were kind of a longshot to unseat Spruce Creek. They just have so many girls who score in so many events,” Halliday said. “But every one of our girls brought their A-game today. They far exceeded what they, on paper, were supposed to do. For the boys: We had a couple of hiccups, but overall, they performed really well.”

As the Bulldogs prepare for what lies ahead, they’ll continue to compete for their sidelined teammate.

“This involves all of us,” Gordon said. “We use our performances out here to really push for him, so we can tell him how good we’re doing.

It really helps us step our game up.”

Team Flagler, a 65-and-older travel softball team, won the International Senior Softball Association Titletown 65AA Championship on April 6-8 in Valdosta, Georgia.

The team began the weekend by winning two games on April 6. On April 7, Flagler played AMR South — a 70 Major Plus from Bonita Springs — who led 5-0 after the first inning.

However, they were shut down for the rest of the game by a strong defensive performance, leading to a rain shortened 15-7 win by Flagler. The team was led by third baseman Rick Albert’s two triples and four RBIs and outfielder Mike Rinehart’s three hits.

Flagler closed out an unbeaten 4-0 weekend by playing 65AAA CH Engineering from Raleigh, North Carolina — the only other unbeaten team — on the morning of Sunday, April 8.

This game was a tough victory for Flagler, as CH jumped out to an 8-3 lead after two innings.

Flagler kept fighting back and eventually tied it 13-13 going into the last inning.

Flagler failed to score in their top half of the inning but managed to shut down the heart of the CH lineup, its Nos. 2, 3 and 4 hitters, in the bottom half, sending the game into extra innings.

Flagler came through with the go ahead run being brought in on a fielder’s choice by short stop Dave Stoverink and then added four more runs with two out RBI hits by Knott, Sanders,

and 1B Mike Clymer. Flagler won the game 18-14.

In addition, Flagler placed four players on the All-Tournament team, led by Bill Collum, Tom Knott, Bill Martin and John Jones. By winning this tournament, Flagler has gained entry into the November 2018 ISSA U.S. Championships in Daytona Beach and the January 2019 ISSA World Tournament of Champions in Tampa.

atanzas High School Interact Club President Erin Robinson scurried around the MHS cafeteria packaging meals and encouraging her peers during the school’s Rise Against Hunger event on Saturday, April 7.

Rise Against Hunger is an international organization working to end world hunger by 2030.

Robinson said the event was the first of its kind in Flagler County Schools. The MHS Interact Club led the event to package 14,000 meals to send to school lunch programs in developing nations or to be used for emergency aid.

Each meal containing soy, rice, vegetables and a vitamin packet cost $0.29 and feeds about six people.

“I went to the rotary youth leadership awards and was introduced to this, and it was mindblowing how many meals you could package in a short amount of time with a lot of hands,” Robinson said.

About 60 volunteers from MHS Interact Club, MHS LEO Club, MHS National Honor Society, Rotary Club of Flagler Beach, Rotary Club of Flagler County, Rotary alumni, Flagler Palm Coast High School Interact Club, EarlyAct of Old Kings Elementary School and local businesses donated and participated.

The MHS Interact Club was tasked with raising $5,000 to cover costs of supplies from RAH. Robinson said the club is $500 away from its goal, as of April 9.

She’s hoping the club’s upcoming trivia night on April 24 and a car wash in the future will raise the remaining money.

MHS Interact Club Sponsor Tom De Ceglie praised Robinson for her commitment and hard work leading up to the mealpackaging event. He said her dedication was inspiring.

“It was really near to our club’s heart that we can feed more people,” Robinson said.

AWARD-WINNING FLORIDA ARTISTS SHARE INSIGHT AT OCEAN ART GALLERY Ocean Art Gallery in Flagler Beach held an opening art reception on Saturday, April 7, for thirteen of Florida’s award-winning plein air and studio artists who showcased their unique art styles in an exhibit titled “Fabulous Florida.”

The artists in this exhibit, which will end with a closing party from 6-8 p.m. May 4, are: Trish Beckham, John Caggiano, Kathleen Chenet, Priscilla Coote, Charles Dickinson, Rebecca Eagan, Cynthia Edmonds, Sally Evans, Martha Lent, Peter Pettegrew, Morgan Samuel Price, Gary Rupp and Tom Sadler. HELPING HANDS AT P&L STABLES

Students from the University of Delaware partnered with the National Relief Network to help clean up hurricane damage at P&L Stables.

P&L Stables received help from 38 University of Delaware student volunteers who partnered with the National Relief Network to assist in the disaster relief efforts in Flagler County related to the recent hurricanes. The group spent March 26-29 repairing fences

and cleaning the grounds at the stable located at 390 Sawgrass Rd, Bunnell.

“They worked diligently repairing fences, removing fallen trees, clearing brush, all with focus, dedication and positive attitude,” P&L Stables Owner Pam Stolsworth said in a press release.

LIFESAVING AWARDS, UNIT CITATION PRESENTED Palm Coast resident Serge Judro attended the Palm Coast City Council meeting on Tuesday, April 3, to thank his coworkers and the Engine 21 crew that responded when he collapsed on Feb. 15, according to a press release from the city of Palm Coast.

Judro didn’t feel well on Feb. 15 when he went to work, but he didn’t realize he was experiencing signs of a heart attack. His coworkers didn’t notice that anything was wrong until Judro collapsed. They called 911 and immediately began CPR. Upon arrival of Palm Coast Fire Engine 21, the crew of Lt. Daniel Driscoll, Driver Engineer

Adam Bachman and FirefighterParamedic Kalin Graham found Judro in cardiac arrest.

Because of the extraordinary chain of events on Feb. 15, Judro is here today as one of the 10% of people who survive an out-ofhospital cardiac arrest.

Palm Coast Fire Chief Mike Beadle presented lifesaving awards to Sandvik employees Nate Kife, Gene Kleinschmit, Tricia Pacionis and Lori Scorpio, saying not all first responders are firefighters. Driscoll, Bachman and Graham of Palm Coast Engine 21 received a Unit Citation.

Imagine School at Town Center student Jackson Branstrator poses in front of pop tabs he collected, earning him the winning spot for the school’s pop tab contest.

Imagine School at Town Center’s second-annual pop tab collection contest raised 208 pounds of pop tabs to benefit the Ronald McDonald House. ISTC student Jackson Branstrator, who is in Brenda Curry’s class, won the contest, and the class will celebrate with an ice cream party.

The cause is special to ISTC students, as the Branstrator family stayed at the Ronald McDonald House for 45 days while Jackson was receiving radiation therapy. Jackson was diagnosed with brain cancer in July 2016 and finished treatment in September 2017.

Historical figures come alive at Rymfire Elementary’s Night at the Museum

D

ressed in a white button-up shirt, Kindergarten student Mark Lopat played a keyboard in front of his project board depicting facts about German composer and pianist Ludwig van Beethoven.

For the second year, students at Rymfire Elementary brought historical figures to life during Night at the Museum on Thursday, April 5.

Teachers and students in all grade levels presented a variety of curriculum activities in the areas of STEM, art, music, writing, poetry, history, medical science and health/fitness.

Different zones around the schools represented cultures and history from Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe and Australia for an educational and interactive night for students and their families.

bout 150 students spent their Saturday morning cleaning planters, repainting walls, touching up Bulldog paw prints and picking up debris around Flagler Palm Coast High School on April 7 for Give Back to FPC Day. Student groups, sports teams, clubs and classrooms were invited to the school-wide beautification project, started

by Principal Dusty Sims and Activities Director Cheryl Perry.

“In the fall, we were talking

about how many things we have for kids — all the activities, clubs, sports and all that,” Sims said. “We really do provide a lot for the kids. So, (Perry) had talked a little bit with SGA about giving back. ... The kids said, ‘Let’s do a Give Back to FPC Day.’” Sims added the school made sure to hold the event before it got too warm at the end of the school year.

Florida Hospital Flagler had its seventh-annual “State of the Hospital” address on Wednesday, April 4. It was attended by nearly 150 members of the community, according to a news release.
