YOUR TOWN MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE Illinois retired pre-K coordinator Mary Nuckolls was picking shells on the beach in front of her holiday condo in Ormond-by-theSea on Wednesday, Oct. 24, when she spotted a message in a bottle. Nuckolls, along with her friend Judy Larson, also a retired pre-K coordinator from Illinois, contacted the Ormond Beach Observer to open the mysterious bottle together. “I’m hoping it’s a treasure map,” Nuckolls said. “I told my husband if it’s a treasure map, I won’t be home for a while.” It wasn’t a treasure map, but it was a love story. The bottle hadn’t been drifting for long — the note was dated Oct. 21. It was written by a New York couple visiting Florida. They wrote they had just gotten engaged.

Kevin Captain, of Ormond-by-the-Sea, approves as Al Jenkins uses a giant spatula to saute onions at Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce’s seventh-annual King of the Grill competition.
Erma Mohl turned 104 on Tuesday, Oct. 30, and she celebrated her birthday with joy. Mohl is the oldest resident at Seaside Manor in Ormond-by-the-Sea. As a performer crooned songs by Bobby Darin, Mohl tapped her feet to the beat and smiled. Mohl was born on Oct. 30, 1914, in Reading, Pennsylvania, where she lived for the majority of her life. She moved to Florida six years ago. Her daughter told the Ormond Beach Observer last year that Mohl has seven children, nine grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
