How will Latitude Margaritaville impact Ormond Beach?

City commissioners discussed potential heavy traffic increases on West Granada Boulevard at a recent brainstorming workshop.

While the message of the up and coming Latitude Margaritaville community is one of relaxation and peace of mind, for the Ormond Beach City Commissioner Rick Boehm, the new development will be anything but.

“It is not a matter of if but when the impact of 6,900 homes greatly increases the already heavy traffic on Granada,” said the commissioner in an email. “Since the entire Margaritaville project is in Daytona (one of Ormond’s worst days was when ConsolidatedTomoka asked Daytona to annex their land up to Granada because the Ormond City Commission at that time would not agree to work with them), there is nothing Ormond can do but have to deal with the eventual impact of that traffic.”

Even though the development, which will open for sales later this year, is in Daytona Beach, it will share Ormond Beach’s zip code of 32174. And according to City Planner Ric Goss, 80% of the currently proposed 2,700 units are in a portion of the city’s wholesale sewer and service area. That means the city will be supplying

between 750,000 and 800,000 gallons of water and wastewater service combined, per day. Goss said the city does have capacity to meet those needs.

The applicant for sewer and water will be required to provide the necessary infrastructure to connect and serve its development in accordance with the Interlocal Agreement approved

by Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach.

But even Goss agrees that the real impact isn’t water, but transportation. He said the Florida Department of Transportation completed a Project Development and Environmental Study of State Road 40 from Williamson Boulevard to Breakaway Trail and found that the intersection at Williamson and

Granada boulevards would need double left-turns eastbound to southbound on Williamson and triple left-turns northbound on Williamson to westbound SR 40.

He also said that as the development is built from south to north to SR 40, Minto will be required to connect the Tymber Creek Road South extension to LPGA Boulevard and extend Tomoka Farms Road from the ending of Interchange Boulevard to LPGA. During a recent brainstorming workshop, the rest of the city commissioners discussed their concerns with the possible traffic and how to prepare for it.

“What if we extended Hand Avenue over I-95?” proposed Commissioner Dwight Selby.

“There’s got to be alternative ways to go east. We can’t have

every car on Granada.”

“That’s on the list, but we’ve got to find other ways before that,” replied City Manager Joyce Shanahan. “It’s an expensive project that’s gonna be at least 20 years away.”

“We’re the fourth fastest growing area in the nation, according to Forbes,” Selby said. “We need to beat that stuff and make stuff happen when they’re hot.”

Mayor Bill Partington suggested that extending roads like Hand Avenue could ruin the smalltown feel that residents like about Ormond Beach.

“Some people believe that if you don’t do anything, people will find alternate routes on their own,” Partington said. “It’ll keep our roads from turning into a Dunlawton in Port Orange. It’s

probably going to be 10 years before we feel the impact. And if you do an overpass on Hand, people who live near it will go to any length to protect it. They don’t like speeding on that road.”

According to the promotional blog at margaritaville.com, the new development will feature amenities such as a fitness center with an aerobics studio, an indoor lap pool, a spa, indoor and outdoor dining, arts and learning programs, a resort pool area, a band shell for live entertainment and a private beachfront club which residents can access via a continuous loop shuttle service.

The Orlando Sentinal reported that the beachfront club will be located in Ormond Beach, but a Minto declined to comment on the exact location.

Checking out the first Ormond Beach librarian

The first public library in Ormond Beach was in a room in the Anderson-Price building until the Ormond Beach Regional Library opened on South Beach Street in 1969.

he tire-worn path of a driveway that winds under the live oaks to Clauda Stanton Green’s house sets the stage for the stories to come about Ormond Beach in the 1800 and 1900s. Visitors who take the drive, which brings to mind Robert Frost’s “The Road not Taken,” find themselves back in time as they arrive at a modest home, with hummingbirds flitting at a feeder, a large chocolate Labrador named Bella who greets visitors with gusto, and a garden filled with flowers.

Green, who was born on North Ridgewood Drive in Ormond Beach in 1933, has a memory people half her age would envy, and one the Ormond Beach Historical Society is thankful for.

Edith Folke Stanton was Ormond Beach’s first librarian and was Green’s grandmother.

The Anderson-Price building was built and referred to as the “VIA” in 1916, specifically to provide Ormond Beach with a public library.

The VIA was the Village Improvement Association, an organization of women who wanted to serve their community.

“I spent my summers with her in the library reading every book I could get a hold of,” Green said.

“Some of them I understood and some I didn’t.”

The library occupied one room to the right of the entrance to the building. Today, the room is a parlor and restroom.

“The left side (of the entryway) was locked and never opened,” Green recalled. “I suppose they used it for some kind of meetings and didn’t want people wandering in there. The VIA used the room with the stage.”

The women of the VIA, which included Mrs. Borden of the Borden Milk Co. family, raised the money to build the library. The Bordens were winter residents and had a house on Beach Street.

The library also served as a community gathering place.

Green said people came to talk to Stanton as much as to get a book.

Stanton made a point to know every book in the library.

Stanton was also a writer. She wrote for the Daytona paper at the time and the Jacksonville Times, as well as a few short stories. Her subjects ranged from a history of plantations to “The House That Jack Built,” a story about Green’s husband Jack building their first home out of bridge timbers.

Green said her grandmother was a crossword puzzle aficionado and won $200 in a crossword contest.

throw anything out, but handed everything down.”

The keepsakes included leather-bound journals written by her cousin Fannie Jamison in 1905 about a winter trip to Stanton (then Folke’s) Ormond Beach home. The elegant handwriting is accompanied by photos and descriptions of places that can still be seen today in the area.

This book is sold by the historical society at the MacDonald House.

A second set of journals, written by Stanton about events from when she arrived in Ormond Beach with her uncle and cousins in 1887 (she was 12 years old) is expected to be published in the next few months.

The original journals have been donated to the historical society by Green and will be on display once the MacDonald house repairs have been completed.

While Green wouldn’t divulge the contents of the upcoming book, she did reveal that her grandmother was at the opening of the Hotel Ormond and danced with John Anderson. Stanton also attended Rollins College and was the editor of the Sandspur, the college newspaper.

The stories are vivid and leave you wanting more, but ask Green for details and you are likely to be told, “Read the book.”

As Flagler County continues to go forward with its beach restoration, Ormond-by-the Sea in Volusia County hasn’t seen much action.

Ormond-by-the-Sea lost a considerable amount of sand to Hurricane Matthew. It is believed the sand is off the coast, and the hope is, in time, Mother Nature will return it to the dunes. Time is the issue. As long as there are no major storms, State Road A1A and the beachside should be fine.

But as Flagler County learned two weeks ago, a heavy rain can cause washouts, and more areas of A1A had to be repaired.

“We’re worried about road eventually washing out because the dune diminishment in Ormond-by-the-Sea area,” said Heather Post, the District 4 representative on the Volusia County Council.

Post said there has been “active conversation” between the county, FDOT and the state. Part of the issue stems from which department has ultimate responsibility for the restoration of the dunes.

are owned by private individuals and homeowners associations.

Of the 635 acres of dunes east of A1A, 87.5 % of the parcels are privately owned and make up 21.9% of the acreage. The rest is publicly owned, including the area of North Peninsula State Park.

Recktenwald said historically there hasn’t been the need for much dune restoration in the past. While Flagler Beach has lost chunks of its section of A1A in past storms, Volusia has gone through the same storms with no problem. There were two “shark bites” or small sections of A1A in Ormond-by-the-Sea damaged

by Hurricane Matthew. Both were quickly repaired by the Florida Department of Transportation.

Recktenwald said the county has to be concerned about paying for repairs that would disqualify it for state or federal funding.

Adding to the damage are the

tourists and residents walking on and climbing down the dunes to get to the beach. Recktenwald said the Volusia County Beach Patrol is watching for those taking a short cut instead of looking for an appropriate walkover.

The north lifeguard tower in Ormond-by-the-Sea was left unusable by the storm, but the beach patrol officers are still working in the area.

Post said residents need to “advocate” with Rep. Paul Renner and Sen. Travis Hutson.

“Whatever they are asking for, we are trying to get to them,” Hutson said. “They need to be permitting these projects.”

“The state is taking care of other areas having the same issues,” Post said. “We’re not backing down, because we are just as important. What’s good for one is good for the others and we need to fight for our county.”

The Ormond Beach Police Department is participating in a High Visibility Enforcement program to address pedestrian and bicycle safety issues, particularly with crosswalk safety.

This will be done through education, warnings and enforcement at locations that have been identified as high risk throughout the city. Previously the Ormond Beach Police Department was only issuing educational materials and warnings to violators.

Effective immediately, OBPD will also be issuing Florida Uniform Traffic Citations to violators.

Pedestrian and bicycle violations start at $64.50. Fines for vehicles that violate crosswalk regulations start at $116.

Volusia County is among the top ten Florida counties with the greatest number of pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities and this program aims to reduce the incidents of these types of crashes.

In 2016, there were 16 vehicle and pedestrian crashes and 13 vehicle and bicyclist crashes in Ormond Beach.

“Security First is the catalyst for things to really come to this

location,” Williams said. “It’s a game changer for Volusia County and Ormond Beach residents.”

Commissioner Rick Boehm and Mayor Bill Partington both acknowledged former mayor and state representative Fred Costello, who was a driving force in starting the project in 2002.

“It was a dream of his during his entire time on the commission,” Boehm said. “He fought to have it happen. Like the rest of us, we’ve waited a long, long time for this moment to arrive.”

As for when Ormond Crossing

could really come to life, Mannarino said the future is still unclear.

There has been no discussion about any more future projects Tomoka Holdings might have, but he — and the City Commission — say that this is a start.

and are being used as a wetland mitigation bank. Mannarino said the development is approved to have 2,950 housing units, 200,000 square feet of retail and commercial space, and 900,000 square feet of office space.

With the aid of the city’s growth assistance funding, SFM plans to lease a new 100,000-square-foot office building in 2019, at a construction value of approximately $25 million. Mannarino said the company wants to break ground this fall.

Ormond Crossings is one step closer to becoming a reality after the Ormond Beach City Commission approved a $285,000 economic incentive for Security First Managers on April 18. The Ormond Beach-based and family-owned insurance company agreed to use the funds to construct its second headquarters in Ormond Crossings, a planned residential, commercial and retail development on North U.S. 1.

The new building will be located on 48 acres in Commerce Park, according to Economic Development Director Joe Mannarino, and the incentive program is performance-based, with SFM agreeing to create 285 new jobs at this location. That’s $1,000 per new job.

“I’m excited that after talking about Ormond Crossings for 15 years that something is actually happening,” Commissioner Troy Kent said during the meeting.

The development was originally proposed in 2002 as a planned business development for 3,000 acres. The footprint is a total of 6,000, but the 3,000 acres adjacent to it are in Flagler County

Wrong place for community center Dear Editor: I’m a former Deltona city commissioner living in Ormond Beach for the past 12 years. In my political life, I was faced with some good, and some bad land-use proposals. In my personal view, the proposed West Ormond Community Center will disrupt the tranquility in the surrounding area. Even though it will not affect me directly because my home is several miles away, I care about the impact the cen-

ter will have on the many that are surprised by this event.

Many that are for the community center probably do not live within the proximity of the land being proposed. They could care less about the extra traffic, noise, stadium lights and stadium sound systems.

The people who live there now bought their homes for a better quality of life Ormond Beach has to offer. A community center as it is being proposed will disrupt that

quality.

I do agree that the city needs to offer amenities, but this project is in the wrong place. I also think the Volusia County School Board is being shortsighted by potentially offering the property to the city.

With the growth expected at Hunter’s Ridge and surrounding areas, this property should be kept in the School Board’s inventory for future academic facilities expansion.

Pathways Elementary is

already experiencing that growth by adding portable classrooms at the school. That growth will continue. Personally, if I had a choice between a community center as it is being sold, and a Emergency Operations Center, I would support the EOC. JOE PEREZ Hunter’s Ridge

DeSantis is right to wait for a real bill to repeal Obamacare Dear Editor: Mr. Richard Kesling is totally wrong in his letter to the editor published April 13.

I wish he would get his facts before he makes derogatory statements against our fine U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis, who has always lived up to and kept his promises to his constituents.

Ron DeSantis started the last election cycle running for senator till Sen. Marco Rubio pulled out of the presidential race and re-entered the Senate race. Therefore, Mr. DeSantis re-entered the 6th Congressional District race to "stay in the game," and I'm one voter who's very glad he has.

The big issue Mr. Kesling criticized Congressman DeSantis for was because Mr. DeSantis didn't vote for the medical care bill submitted by Congress because it did not

repeal Obamacare. Congressman DeSantis kept his promise.

I'm sure that when Congress submits a bill that will repeal Obamacare, he'll vote for it — just like he's never voted for a budget increase or congressional pay raise. In fact, he has turned down a congressional retirement. We all need to get behind Congressman DeSantis as Mr. Ledbetter and Florida Grassroots folks have done.

Dear Editor: When I voted for Mr. Ron DeSantis as my representative in the U.S. House of Representatives, it was with the assumption that he was a Republican, a good politician and a team player. I was mistaken on all counts.

It is not unreasonable to assume that when one votes for a Republican that the individual will support the party.

Mr. DeSantis and the so-called Freedom Caucus voted with the Democrats, and in the process betrayed his party and all Republicans of fulfilling a key campaign promise.

Good politicians, the ones I vote for, have the ability to listen, comprehend and compromise. This "my way or the highway" posture is a guarantee for failure in our system of government. I am very disappointed in Mr. DeSantis, and I can assure you that he will never again receive my vote.

A field trip around Ormond I learned that there is always something to be learned about Ormond Beach.

Moving on, we head east to the beach and Andy Romano Park.

The 4-acre beachfront park not only has beach access and its own parking, it has a splash pad, playgrounds and a concession stand.

The splash pad was struck by lightning the week before, but no worries, repairs have been made.

ORIGINAL GUEST COTTAGES

Just north of the Ormond Heritage Condominiums, where Hotel Ormond once stood, are houses that were used for folks visiting who didn’t want to stay at the hotel. Ormond Beach Historical Society member Joyce Benedict donned her purple hat and, like a mother duck, had us following her down Orchard Street.

Some of the highlights were a palm log cabin built in 1905 and a house that was built in 1896 from wood salvaged from the Nathan Cobb, a three-masted schooner that sank off the coast of Ormond Beach. Parts of the ship are still buried beneath the sand. The schooner’s wooden name plate, with “Nathan F. Cobb” engraved into it, hangs over the fireplace.

Going over the Granada Bridge the Yacht Club is a landmark in the city.

PLACES OF INTEREST

Heading west across the Granada Bridge, the Yacht Club can be seen in the Intracoastal, just north of the bridge. The nonprofit membership club was built in 1910 by some of Ormond Beach’s founding fathers. Despite it being a wooden structure, hurricanes have left it standing.

THREE CHIMNEYS, PILGRIM’S REST

Benedict pointed out the Three Chimneys, in the woods next to the Lohman Funeral Home, on Granada Boulevard. The Three Chimneys is said to be the oldest successful British sugar plantation and sugar mill in the United States. Most people probably drive right past it without ever knowing it is there.

Pilgrim’s Rest is a cemetery on Granada and is the final resting place for several Confederate soldiers.

The last time I remember going on a field trip, I was a chaperone. On Saturday, April 8, I didn’t have to count heads or keep track of anyone; I just sat back on the DOTS charter bus and soaked up the history of Ormond Beach with the rest of my Ormond Leadership Class XIV. Our day trip was an excellent way for anyone to spend a few hours to learn about their city.

It all began at Fire Station 92 on Nova Road where Fire Chief Bob Mandarino showed us where he works. I learned the emergency vehicles can change certain lights green so they can respond faster.

There are four stations within Ormond Beach city limits, though fire stations in neighboring jurisdictions work together. They are numbered in the order they were built.

Fun fact: Mandarino is a former skateboard champion and is in the Florida Skateboard Hall of Fame.

RECREATIONAL FACILITIES

We arrived at the Nova Community Center and Park as children were finishing up an Easter egg hunt and ballplayers were preparing to take to the fields.

West on U.S. 1 is the Ormond Sports Complex. Part of the Ormond Airport land, it includes softball, baseball, and soccer fields. The Seabreeze JV Sandcrabs football games are played here. There is also a colorful playground designed to be friendly for children with autism.

The Fairchild Oak on North Beach Street was our last stop.

A man reported that his 9-mm Glock 43 was stolen from his car between April 7 and April 8. He told police that he left the car unlocked for several hours after going to Pirana Grill, Beaver Bar and friends’ houses.

The morning of April 8, he checked his car, and the gun and holster were missing from the front center console. All other items in the vehicle were untouched.

The gun was worth $500, and the holster was worth $40.

A woman told police that her car was broken into while she and her husband took a short walk around Bailey Riverbridge Gardens at about 3 p.m. April 8.

When they got back, they found their passenger front window smashed and the woman’s iPhone 6 and purse stolen. The woman told police she then saw a white male riding a bicycle away over the Granada Bridge. She went to chase him, but he “got away really fast,” she said.

She said she’d locked her car.

Items taken include $7 in cash, an iPhone 6 valued at $600, a wallet and purse valued at $80 and four credit cards. The police do not have any suspects.

PLAY BALL? 10:18 a.m. — The 100 Block of Osceola Avenue.

Trespass on School Grounds. The principal of Osceola Elementary School told police he’d gotten reports of two white males walking around campus with no shirts on. The principal asked them what they were doing. They said they were from out of town and just wanted to follow a dirt path to see where it led.

The principal told police that the two tried to enter a portable and stole a soccer ball from a yard next to the school. They returned the ball when the principal asked them to, but fled when he asked why they were trying to get into the portable. Police found them on the beach and arrested them for trespassing and marijuana possession. They told police that they were on vacation from Ohio and were drawn to the school “by the basketball courts.”

When they walked into the residence, she sped by and screamed obscenities.

After a few minutes, the victim and his girlfriend walked outside and saw a piece of paper under his truck’s windshield wiper, along with vomit on the hood and fresh scratches on the door and bed. The ex drove by slowly as the victim looked at the damage.

The note stated: “You have been cheating on me for so long, when I have and would have never done this to you. But because of you I do know what I want and need. Try not to hit her too ... or cheat on her too ... or spend all of her time being taken advantage of. F--- you, my love.”

After the Lady Bucs finished runner-up last season, head coach Terrence Anthony said the feeling he got from that feat was better than any other feeling in his 20 years of coaching. That feeling has to move aside, because the Lady Buccaneers won their first district championship on Tuesday, April 18, at Flagler Palm Coast.

“We had a goal from last year,” Anthony said. “With the number of girls we had returning, and, with the addition of others, we felt we had a chance. Today, it really came together. We had girls come out of nowhere and PR and score critical points for us. They put their hearts and souls into it.”

Mainland senior Josilin Mobley has played a major role in helping the Lady Bucs reach their new status, and she was excited that she could reach the promised land before she graduated.

“It’s crazy that we won the very first one!” Mobley exclaimed.

“Coach Anthony told us all season that if we put in the work, we would see the results. And, we just proved it.”

The Mainland boys remained the dominant district team, beating second-place Matanzas by 81 points to win its third straight title. The Bucs swept nearly every speed event, and junior D’Marcus Adams led the Bucs as he repeated last year’s feat with another four individual district wins.

D’Marcus Adams has won eight district championships in the last two years.

While praising all of his athletes, Anthony wanted to make sure he acknowledged his coaching staff, saying “I don’t deserve a lot of the credit. I didn’t run at all, and I didn’t coach everything.”

Other members of the staff include Lana Anthony, Lakeisha Elder, Vernon Conaway, Alvin Mallory and Harrington Smith.

Going into regionals, the boys hope to also repeat as champions there, while the girls look to make more history.

Mainland and Seabreeze will compete in the Region 2-3A Meet at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 29, at George Jenkins High School in Lakeland.

ome athletes fold under pressure. Others meet those moment head-on. All have to live with the results.

Most athletes grew up playing on a field or court, and, while there, they practiced taking the “game-winning shot” or catching or throwing the winning touchdown in their spare time.

I can remember taking countless game-winners while counting down from five seconds.

Nowadays, I still practice with paper and trash cans. If I make it, I talk trash. If I miss, I’ll call “foul” on the invisible defender.

On April 13, while trailing 12-7 late in the fourth quarter, Mainland flag football needed to convert a fourth down or give up the ball and most likely lose to Matanzas. It was the classic endof-game moment.

Buccaneers captain Jasmine Hadley caught the ball and ran past the down marker to keep Mainland’s eventual game-winning touchdown drive alive. (See Page 10A for more.)

On that same day, Hadley’s fellow Lady Buc Abagaile Killian pitched a 10-inning shutout with 21 strikeouts (her career high) while giving up only two hits in Mainland’s 1-0 win over New Smyrna Beach.

Last month on March 4, Flagler Palm Coast junior wrestler Avery Holder fell behind 8-6 in the final period of his state championship match. With just under a minute remaining, Holder scored a near pinfall that awarded him the goahead three points to win.

And I can’t forget about FPC’s D’mahgio Warren’s gamewinning 3-pointer at the buzzer that gave the Bulldogs a 40-37 district championship win over DeLand in overtime.

After speaking with all of them about their big moments, they each talked about not being able to think.

Holder said his entire match was a blur. Killian had to constantly run her hands through the clay to get the grip back on her sweaty palms. Hadley couldn’t hear anything except “my heart beating through my ears.”

Despite the uneasy feelings, they came up big.

Being clutch seems to be a mixture of a conviction to win along with rigorous practice.

Hadley explained it like this.

When her quarterback says go, her feet just go, “and my hands just catch,” she said.

When the ability to think is lost, pure skill finishes the task.

As the halftime whistles blew, the Lady Buccaneers trailed 12-0 against the Matanzas Pirates, their fellow undefeated district team, on Thursday, April 13, at Matanzas.

With a renewed focus and instruction from head coach Scott Wilson, Mainland (9-0) returned to the field and held the Pirates (5-1) scoreless while scoring two touchdowns and converting two extra points to win 14-12.

The Bucs converted three key fourth downs in the second half to keep both of their touchdown drives alive. Senior captain Jasmine Hadley and Gabrielle Rudd found themselves on the receiving end of those throws and on both of the touchdown catches.

Hadley also caught both of the

extra points, and she caught the game-clinching interception with less than a minute to play.

“We started this week off pretty rough,” Hadley said, “so, to come out and finish strong makes me proud of my team and proud to be their leader. We’ve never faced a team of that capacity before, so I was overjoyed that we beat them.”

Senior quarterback Tahara Williams helped lead theBucs to their most difficult win of the season.

“Our quarterback was amazing,” Wilson said. “After we failed to score on the play we thought was a touchdown, she looked at me said, ‘Coach, next play, we got this.’ She’s so calm. I’m proud of them to have pulled it off in the end. I’m glad to face a little adversity.”

Although the Bucs were able to pull off the win, Wilson acknowledged that Matanzas wasn’t in full strength without speedster Miracle Porter.

“I expect to see them make a playoff team,”he said. “Not having one of their best players makes a

First egg hunt a success for Masons The Easter Bunny, a.k.a. Worshipful Master Lee Hays, hopped around the lawn of the Masonic Lodge on Saturday making sure everyone had a good time.

Dressed in shirts and dresses that were the same colors as the plastic eggs they were searching for, toddlers darted back and forth across the lawn at Masonic Lodge 326 in Ormond Beach on Saturday, April 15.

Searching for the eggs that contained stickers and other small toys, the little ones would walk right past half a dozen eggs placed in plain sight, to pluck one from a bush or behind a tree. Parents and grandparents gently guided the smallest of the egg hunters in the right direction so that every basket was filled.

Ilsa Morris wasn’t sure about the plastic egg the size of an ostrich egg hidden inside a bush, but eventually it made its way into her basket and contained a fullsize candy bar.

The event was the first for the Ormond Beach Masonic Lodge and included a bounce house for

the little ones, as well as the older children who helped “plant” the eggs.

Tours of the lodge were also being conducted, though most of the talk focused on the replacement of the roof and ceiling, destroyed by Hurricane Matthew.

The organization decided to have the event to bring attention to the existence of the Masonic Lodge in Ormond Beach.

“People ask, ‘What is that symbol?’” Senior Deacon John Stein said. “They’ve seen the building but don’t know what it is.”

Meetings are the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month with dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting at 7:30 p.m. While guests are invited to dinner, only Masons are allowed in the closed-door meeting at 7:30.

Dan Kimble said there’s no secret to becoming a Mason.

“2 B 1 ASK 1,” Kimble said.

The saying means those who want to become a Mason only need to ask another Mason.

Primp your Pit: Grant money gives Halifax a boost

Annual Halifax Humane Society program for pit bulls and pit bull mixed breeds will continue through May or until the grant runs out.

ften times visitors to humane societies comment on the number of pit bull and pit bull mixes that are available for adoption.

In fact the number of these dogs coming into the Halifax Humane Society is reducing, according to veterinarian Jennifer Green.

Between 2012 and 2016, the number of pit bulls and mixes coming into the shelter decreased by 66%, and the euthanasia rate decreased by 49%. But Green said the Humane Society wants to see these numbers continue to drop.

“Pit bull type dogs are the highest intake dog,” Green said. “There were 1,050 surrendered in 2016.”

Humane Society is offering its “Primp your Pit” special.

Referring to the breed that she called “underserved,” Green said the program allows owners of these dogs to have them spayed or neutered for a co-pay of $25. The grant pays for the rest of the costs. Along with the surgery, each dog receives a registered microchip and rabies vaccine.

Dogs must be at least 3 months old to qualify. Rabies vaccinations cannot be administered before that time.

Owners drop their dogs off at the Redinger Clinic at 600 Mason Ave., Suite 150, at an appointed time and pick them up the same day. Any follow up appointments needed would be done at the dog’s regular veterinarian, as the shelter is not able to act as the primary veterinarian.
