Ormond Beach will soon have another fast food option in town.

The city has approved a site plan for a Zaxby’s which will be located on 1287 W. Granada Blvd., next to the VyStar Credit Union. The restaurant will have a drive-thru, all allowed under its

current Commercial B-8 zoning.

Construction is expected to begin in April.

This will be the only Zaxby’s in the greater Daytona Beach area. The nearest ones are currently located in DeLand and Palm Coast. A Zaxby’s used to be located on 250 S. Atlantic Ave. in Ormond, but has since closed.

One Ormond Beach resident never thought he would continue to pursue his music career, but a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with “The Voice” changed all that.

Kaleb Scharmahorn, known by his artist name Kaleb Lee on the show, made it through the blind auditions for the Voice on Monday, Feb. 26. Scharmahorn, a former Salty Church w o r s h i p leader, performed Kenny Kaleb Scharmahorn C h e s n e y ’s “Never Wanted Nothing More” and had coaches Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton fighting to have him on his team.

Scharmahorn said he went with his gut, and chose Shelton.

His journey on the show began when producers found a YouTube video of him singing. They decided to reach out to him. Scharmahorn said he’s a skeptical guy, so it took him some time to come to grips with the possibility that the opportunity could work out.

“Now that it’s happened, it’s been pretty exciting, and so for

me, I’m tuned in,” Scharmahorn said. “I’m ready to see what will happen with this music thing and kind of re-engage with some of the stuff I put away for so long.”

Had the producers not approached him, he probably would have never auditioned, according to his wife, Meagan Scharmahorn. He had put his music on the back burner, choosing instead to focus on his family — a move she was grateful for. But seeing him play music at home and sing to their three children, she felt there was more to come for his music career.

“This was a dream of ours, and we had put it away,” Meagan Scharmahorn said. “And now it’s like come back to life, which is so, so exciting.”

The first time she saw him, he was playing music. That part of him has always been a part of their relationship. Their 10th wedding anniversary is coming this July.

She revealed the message that she tried to convey in a note that she wrote to him during the audition process: “For him, stepping away from music, that was one thing I fell in love with him for,” she said. “Then to see him doing it again, it’s like I get to fall in love with my husband all over again. It’s so, so neat.”

He brought his family on stage after his audition — a statement telling the audience and coaches where his heart is.

“It was important for me to have the people I care most about up there with me,” he said. “I wanted them to know that.”

Moments after Sanah Spar, playing Glinda, the Good Witch, spun off the stage at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center, her little sister Aliyah Spar appeared in her place as a younger Glinda.

The Ormond Beach sisters, age 14 and 8, have been dancing in shows with South Daytona’s Kinetic Expressions Dance Academy for years, but on Saturday, March 3, the pair got to perform as the same role at different ages.

KEDA’s Expressions Company performed a mash-up of “The Wizard of Oz,” “Wicked” and “The Wiz” — called “The Wicked Wiz” — for a packed house. Sanah has been dancing with KEDA for 10 years, and Aliyah followed in her sister’s footsteps as a young child.

“I help her a lot with her tricks and stuff to teach her. Sometimes we butt heads, but most of the time, we’re fine. We practice, and she can get better and make her technique stronger.”

But Aliyah was at Sanah’s performances before she was even born. Their mother, Vernell Spar, said when she was expecting Aliyah, she still spent countless hours helping Sanah put on her makeup before shows, just like she does now.

The words “Dance Mom” sparkled across the front of Vernell’s shirt as she told Aliyah to pucker up while she applied lipstick to her in the dressing room before the show.

“It’s nice to have a support system behind you 24/7,” Sanah said about her mother. “She’s always here for us and always here to help anyone and everyone.”

Aliyah said she wants to one day become a professional dancer or dance teacher.

“Some things are hard, but you just have to really try,” Aliyah said.

Sanah said she wants to study

law in college after graduating from Atlantic High School, but hopes to still dance for fun in college.

“It’s a way to express yourself,” Sanah said. “These days you have teenagers that feel confined to themselves. So, it’s just a way to get out there and express your feelings and emotions.”

A company of 21 dancers performed the combination show of three classics while lip singing, acting and getting into character through costume and expression.

“We’re a very unique studio,” Sanah said. “We blend things and make it our own. So, with this show, it’s three different storylines, and we make it our own, so that’s kind of special because we have our own show.”

“it’s just a way to get out there and express your feelings and emotions.”

City begins budget discussion The City Commissioners have started to give initial direction to staff on where they stand.

The city of Ormond Beach has begun to formulate the budget for the 2018-2019 fiscal year, but commissioners are divided on whether or not the planning process should use the current tax rate of 4.2843 mills.

disagreed. Instead, Littleton suggested the city use the rollback rate and the current millage to meet in the middle.

“To me, it’s not worth doing,” City Commissioner Dwight Selby said. “It’s not even worth looking at.”

He said the current tax rate is justifiable because of the quality of life the city is able to provide.

Commissioner Troy Kent said he’d love to use the rollback rate, but that Littleton would have to lead the charge on it and tell the commission and staff what to cut from the budget.

“If you want to go to rollback, I’m with you, but show me the leadership of what you’re going to cut,” Kent said.

Selby said the bigger issue is the looming homestead exemption that could be implemented in the near future.

While commissioners and city staff did not address exactly how the budget will be amended if the additional homestead exemption — which will be on the ballot in November — is implemented, Finance Director Kelly McGuire said its implementation would cause an additional $800,000 shortfall in the general fund.

The Ormond Beach Riverside Church — Ormond’s first house of worship — is on sale for $1 million, and the city government is one of the parties interested in buying it.

Michael Carruthers, the church’s current owner and pastor, said the congregation will be relocating in Ormond Beach.

“It’s a prime piece of property here, but we need to go where we can grow,” Carruthers said.

“Not like we don’t like it here,” Carruthers added. “It’s just a matter of the future.”

Carruthers declined to say how many members were in the congregation, saying he couldn’t see how that was pertinent to him selling the church.

When Carruthers took over in 2012, some church members told the Daytona Beach News-Journal that they were concerned that the new leadership would sell off the church because of its prime location. Carruthers told the News-Journal that wasn’t true.

At the time, according to the News-Journal story, he said that the congregation was sometimes as large as 100, and that he hoped to have a congregation of 200 or 300, or even more, in five years.

according to real estate agent Buzzy Porter. The property has been on the market for about four months, and seven different parties have expressed interest, Porter said.

The city government is currently conducting a property appraisal for the property. It could take a few more weeks to complete, according to Joe Mannarino, the city’s director of economic development. “Once completed, staff will review the appraisal and bring forth recommendations to the Commission at a future date, which is yet to be determined,” Mannarino wrote in an email.

City Commissioner Dwight Selby, a real estate broker, brought up the property during a City Commission workshop on Feb.

20. He said the asking price was very aggressive, and that several area developers had looked at it and backed off. If bought, he said, he couldn’t see going on the market again for a while.

But, he said, “I think it’s a very strategic piece of land.”

Its location at 56 N. Beach St., next to the historic AndersonPrice Memorial building and close to downtown, is a compelling reason for the city to at least take a look at it, Selby said.

‘It’s a real privilege’: Ormond Beach A life of City Manager talks female leadership activism March 8 is International Women’s Day. Get to know Ormond Beach’s City Manager Joyce Shanahan.

Ormond Beach City Manager Joyce Shanahan is the only woman sitting up high with the City Commissioners every first and third Tuesday of the month.

As one of five female city managers in Volusia County and with more than 25 years of experience in local government, Shanahan loves what she does.

“It is the most wonderful job in the whole world,” Shanahan said.

“There’s something different every single day — we have such amazing leadership here with the City Commission, we’ve got great employees, a wonderfully dedicated engaged community and that’s really the reason why I came here.”

Shanahan began her career with local government as an intern in the 1980s with a council of governments in Pittsburgh. She said that after the grocery store she worked in during grad school closed down, she was standing in a hallway at the University of Pittsburgh when one of her professors passed by her and asked if she would be interested in a paid internship.

full time. She stayed in the same area for a number of years, and worked different finance-related jobs. That was, until the April Fool’s Day blizzard of 1997.

“I thought: ‘I’m done,’” Shanahan said. “‘I’m tapping out.’”

Deciding to move somewhere warm and sunny, she ended up in Fort Walton Beach, where she stayed for 12 years, six of which she spent as the city manager.

In 2009, she moved to Ormond Beach.

In the time she’s been with the city, two things she said the city is proud of accomplishing are the development of the downtown district and the construction of the Andy Romano Beachfront Park, which Shanahan called a “crown jewel” of the city.

Partington, some of Shanahan’s “secrets of her successes” include her focus on transparency and her open-door policy for citizens to come and voice their concerns.

He said the kindness that she shows to both her staff and the residents comes through in how she approaches the job.

“She is very competent with the nuts and bolts of city government as far as the budget and finance side of it, but then she tempers that with a heart,” Partington said.

Shanahan said it’s a real privilege to be a woman in leadership today. While in Volusia County, she said all the managers learn from each other regardless of gender, nationwide, she believes the city manager profession tends to be more male-occupied.

“But there’s so many bright, young women out there, so our ranks are growing every day,” Shanahan said.

And when she’s not working?

You might spot Shanahan running. She recently ran her 100th half-marathon.

At the end of the day, though, Shanahan said she doesn’t like the limelight when it comes to her job.

“It’s not about me,” Shanahan said. “It’s about the community.

It’s about the city and what they accomplish, and if I’m a small part of that, I’m happy to be a small part of that.”

Jeanette Wheeler has been an activist for equality her entire life. In the 1960s, she marched for people of color to be hired in city hall. After retiring, she joined a group to help mothers on welfare start new lives and get jobs.

When she moved to Palm Coast, she founded the Youth Black History Reality Program through the African American Cultural Society. The program recently celebrated its 15th year. “It’s hard to explain,” she said about what founding the program means to her. “It just feels like, ‘Ah, I’ve made it. I’ve done something good.’”

Basilia Brown was recently named one of the 40 under 40 business leaders in Volusia and Flagler counties. Her journey to vice president of the Vystar Credit Union Port Orange branch began 15 years ago when she first started in banking as a teller in West Virginia.

Brown attributes much of what she learned to the mentors she had along the way. Now she is able to use those same experiences to coach her staff and help them move progress.

Ormond MainStreet showcased some of the city’s best local restaurants at its fifth-annual Taste of Ormond event at the Rockefeller Gardens on Sunday, March 4.

The gardens were alive with conversation, white tents and music as people tried dishes from more than a dozen restaurants, including like Rose Villa Southern Table, Wild Rabbit Cafe, Greektown Taverna, Jimmy Hula’s, Lulu’s Oceanside Grill and Cakery Creation. Attendees could try all the options, and go back for repeats, during the two-hour event. Live entertainment was also provided.

The Ormond Beach Lions Club chose Seabreeze High School senior Danielle Spaulding as its student-athlete of the month at its meeting on Feb. 28.

Spaulding is a four-year varsity player on the school’s softball team, earning an honorable mention on the New-Journal’s 2017 all-area softball team and named the defensive player of the year.

She is also the senior captain for Seabreeze’s 2018 softball team.

In addition to sports, Spaulding has earned over 600 community service hours as a junior counselor for Pine Trail Elementary’s summer camp. Seabreeze principal Joe Rawlings said she is a great role model for the younger students due to her accomplishments on and off the field.

Spaulding hopes to pursue a degree in pediatric nursing at Daytona State College and the University of Central Florida.

First upcycle fashion show in Daytona Beach raises funds and awareness for Conklin Center for the Blind Student Lorie Asher lived out her dream of walking down a runway.

In a dress made out of old tires, Conklin Center student Lorie Asher glided down the runway with confidence, ease and poise, at Daytona Beach’s first-ever upcycle fashion show.

“I never thought I would get an opportunity like this,” Asher said.

“Modeling has been my dream since high school.”

It was a dream she never thought she would see come to fruition after an accident changed her life five years ago. At age 18, she got in a car with a couple of friends and was ejected through the windshield after the driver ran a flashing red light and collided with another vehicle. Asher hadn’t been wearing her seatbelt.

She was found three yards away from the car and had to be airlifted to Tampa General Hospital.

Because of a brain injury, she was induced into a coma. When she woke up, she couldn’t see.

“She’s a wonderful young lady,” Reaney said with tears in her eyes.

The upcycle fashion show was one of the special events of QuiltWeek 2018. The idea for the show sprouted from a conversation between Bonnie Browning, executive director for the American Quilter’s Society, and Ormond Beach resident Gail Warner, who was driving her down for a Fox News interview in Orlando. The

purpose of the show was to benefit the Conklin Center and open the eyes of other creative people.

“We’re so habitual when it comes to shopping that you kind of become a zombie, right?”

Warner said. “You just grab off the shelf, and you’re really not thinking about what you’re consciously bringing into the house but almost automatically just putting in a bin on a weekly basis and not thinking about the accumulation of that weekly bin.”

The designs on the runway were all made of upcycled materials, from mirrors and K cups to baby blue bubble wrap and plastic water bottles.

Warner said she hoped people would pause when they see the amount of everyday disposable material used on each design.

Catherine Ropp, vice president of marketing for AQS, said the common factor between quilting and upcycling is that both use different pieces to create something

beautiful.

“To be able to do that with things you are upcycling from the environment, and you know from home and businesses and industries is fantastic,” Ropp said. “So we’ve been very excited about the opportunity.”

Conklin Center Development Director Lori McMullin was pleased with the idea for the show, which raised money for the center’s early intervention program.

“Not only is it going to raise much-needed funding, it’s going to raise visibility and awareness for our organization,” McMullin said.

Asher might have been modeling a design called “Dark Beauty,” but her inner light shone enough to be picked fan favorite by the audience, who didn’t know she was the only student from the Conklin Center in the show. Asher said the whole experience was unbelievable and that she didn’t expect to win.

“I feel beautiful,” she said.

“We’re so habitual when it comes to shopping that you kind of become a zombie.”

A 33-year-old cutter for a landscaping company he claimed to be called “Real Men Maintenance” was arrested after police found three capped syringes inside a Ziploc bag in his pocket. The man was searched due to his identity not coming up on file.

The man later admitted he’d given police a false name because he had a warrant. Police were alerted to his presence by a neighbor who called in a suspicious presence of a green pickup truck.

When an officer arrived on scene, the defendant was alone.

He grabbed a chainsaw and began trimming a shrub. He told police he did not know where the rest of the crew was.

Police arrested a 25-year-old man from Holly Hill after being found with 128 grams of weed, worth an estimated $475, following a traffic stop for driving on the wrong side of the road.

The officer smelled burnt cannabis on the inside of the man’s car, and proceeded to search the man’s vehicle, finding several “roaches.” At that point, the man told the officer there was a bag of weed in the backseat. Police also found $883 in the car.

Grace Remey was on pace to graduate from Seabreeze High School in December 2017. She was ready for graduation, ready to move on from high school life.

But something was pulling her back: flag football, which starts in the spring.

For more than two hours, Remey and Sandcrabs coach Mike Fries worked tirelessly to find out how to delay Remey’s impending graduation. But with the help of Fries and school advisers, Remey, who already earned her associates degree, worked out her new course schedule, postponing her final core class — government — to this semester.

“I just really love this sport,” said Remey, who is a team captain for the Sandcrabs. “I wanted to play for one last season.”

Remey didn’t play flag football until the 2017 season, Fries’ first with the team. She had never touched a football until that point.

Her mom didn’t want Remey to play. She had “bad knees,” according to Remey, and her mom feared her daughter could get seriously hurt. Eventually, Remey was allowed to try out for the team with two of her closest friends. Remey and one friend made the team; the other did not.

After the second practice, Remey was the last one standing.

One of the biggest factors in her staying?

Fries.

“He’s the best coach I’ve ever had,” said Remey, a lifetime soccer player. “And I’ve had a lot of coaches in my lifetime.”

She started at outside linebacker in her junior season. She was an aggressive defender and had good speed.

But, she had hands of stone.

“We didn’t want her on offense then, that’s for sure,” Fries said.

“She couldn’t catch anything.”

“I love this sport. Just the way the team works, the way that girls can do what guys can do. I honestly think flag is a little bit tougher than tackle because it’s more technical.

You’re grabbing a little flag as opposed to someone’s entire body. I just love that.

Now, however, in addition to starting on defense, Remey is a threat on offense. She plays wide receiver and running back and has punting duties.

But according to Fries, Remey’s best attribute is her ability to sacrifice for the team.

“She’s always pushing her teammates to do better and to strive for more,” Fries said. “It’s just her attitude about the game: She loves being here. That attitude shoots her above a lot of people.”

Fries added: “She’s always helping me. She’s like a player-

assistant coach with the work she puts in. It shows her dedication to this team and to the success and to where we want to be at.”

Sometimes, Remey — who helped lead the Sandcrabs to a season-opening 44-0 win over Atlantic on Tuesday, March 6, at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex — forgets that it’s her last season with the team.

“I think I’ll be really sad when I graduate,” she said. “But I’m happy I got into it because I’m definitely going to play intramurals when I finally get to college.”

he 2018 Winter Olympic Games came to an end nearly two weeks ago, but the people of the hot and humid Flagler and Volusia counties are still feeling inspired.

Nearly a week after the conclusion of the Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, a local couple walked into the Daytona Ice Rink looking to ice skate, according to arena employee Brandon Galarneau.

Galarneau said that the couple, inspired by the majestic and graceful performances of the world’s top ice skaters at the Olympics, wanted to give skating a shot.

It was their first time on the ice — ever.

“The better we do in the Olympics, the more hype winter sports gets here in the United States,” Galarneau said.

The Daytona Ice Arena, located at 2400 S. Ridgewood Ave. in Daytona Beach, held a celebration for the Winter Olympics on Feb. 24. The arena, which is the only available ice rink in both Flagler and Volusia counties, hosted a figure skating event, youth and adult hockey games, speed skating and curling. Hundreds of people filtered into the arena throughout the day.

The arena also has a “Learn to Skate” program, which teaches its students the basics of ice skating in a once-per-week, 30-minute group lesson. The program, which sees about 100 total students on most days, has increased by about 20-to-30 students since the conclusion of the Olympics.

“I’ve met figure skaters throughout the years who said the only reason they got into it was because they saw people like Michelle Kwan or (Kristi) Yamaguchi or people like that competing in the Olympics,” Galarneau said. “It inspired them to come out and try the sport.”

In addition, the arena also offers a “Learn to Curl” program.

In its last session, the class saw over 40 people attend — its highest attendance ever.

What does all this mean, exactly?

Maybe it’s time to put down the surfboard and pick up a pair of ice skates!

he Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens drew artist Leigh Murphy to expand her work out of Jacksonville to Ormond Beach.

“I was just out in the gardens thinking ‘Ooo, that might be fun to paint. That might be fun to paint,’” she said. “It’s really about the way the light hits something.”

Murphy describes her style as a “stream of consciousness realism.” She finds inspiration in nature, takes many photos of a scene, spends ample time drawing and redrawing her rendition of the photos, then adds watercolor to bring the work to life.

“It’s like a handwriting style but for paint,” Murphy said. “People who know my work best can tell when a piece is mine because of the way I apply the paint and the way I draw because it’s not super, super realistic. You can get a couple feet away and see brushstrokes. The classic photo-realistics, you could get nose-to-nose with it and not know it was a painting.

Murphy took her first watercolor painting class in October 1993, and though she sometimes works with different mediums like oil paint, she always comes back to her roots.

“I work with pretty much everything, but watercolor is my

first love,” she said.

Murphy’s exhibit “Vibrant Realism” will be on display at OMAM from March 9 to April 22.

Many of her pieces depict natural and marine scenes.

“There was a time when I wanted to be a marine biologist,” she said. “Living in Florida, that’s an easy choice. That’s part of the reason why I focus on sea life and shells and things like that.”

“With the seashells, you get the light on them and then the light comes through and then it’s this wonderful, golden luminescence that’s hard to find in anything else, even flowers,” she said.

Depending on the detail involved, Murphy spends 10 days to several months on a single piece.

“I solve all my problems with a pencil first,” she said. “I spend more time drawing a painting than most people do on completing a painting.”

Murphy said she’s still learning

how to let go a little easier with each piece. Perfectionism, she said, is fatal.

She said she doesn’t get too attached to her paintings though, making it easier to let them go when they’re sold. But her journals are a different story.

One of her earliest journals is filled with 365 drawings done over a period of three years. Page after page tells a visual story of Murphy teaching herself how to garden and depicts what she created in her yard.

“It was irreplaceable, really, because it was a journey to accomplish that,” she said.

Her eclectic approach to realism is what makes her work unique, she said.

“This is a very freeing lifestyle,” she said. “It does help you get out and appreciate being outdoors in the natural world.”

Ultimately, it was the charm of the individualism of Ormond Beach’s businesses and streets that led Murphy here.

“I just love those gardens,” she said. “I could spend all day out there.”

Ormond Beach Historical Society holds second-annual Hillside Cemetery tour Ghosts of Ormond’s past.

The Ormond Beach Historical Society held its second-annual Hillside Cemetery tour on Saturday, March 3, complete with re-enactors of some of the city’s earliest settlers.

As one of the oldest cemeteries in Volusia County, Hillside is the final resting place for the “movers and shakers” of Ormond Beach, OBHS board member Joyce Benedict said. Some of the people buried there include John Anderson Price, who built the Ormond Hotel, and John Andrew Bostrom, who is credited with being the city’s first permanent settler.

Benedict said Hillside Cemetery was chosen for it’s location on the beachside, which back then, was full of sand dunes and palm trees.

“They would be buried by the ocean so that they could hear the waves,” Benedict said.

Employees representing LabCorp, Cheeriodicals, and Two Men and a Truck delivered 80 gift boxes to the Halifax Health - Betty Jane France Center for Pediatrics on Feb. 28.

The “big green boxes of cheer” included age-appropriate magazines and activity books, room decorations, puzzles, stickers and games.

Cheeriodicals is a corporate team-building company that conducts philanthropic events benefiting children’s hospitals.

The United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties has released its first sixmonth report under the new Community Impact model, which places a focus on outcomes: 86 families moved into permanent housing; 4,066 individuals received financial assistance; 97 families maintained or improved employment; 3,842,110 pounds of food was distributed; 355 girls learned skills for educational success and 363 services for crisis were provided.

Astronaut visits Halifax Health to get kids’ help making flight suit N

icole Stott, a retired astronaut, came to visit Halifax Hospital on Monday, March 5, to collect pieces for the International Space Station.

Nicole Stott started her tour at the center of pediatrics where the children painted fabric to later be sewn onto a flight suit that will be worn by an astronaut. Even the babies had an impact, when Susie Johnson made copies of the baby feet with paint to be used. They are hoping to have collected and be finished with the project on June 10, International Children’s Day. –NICKY KUBIZNE

RIBBON-CUTTING FOR INVISIBLE WOUNDS MEMORIAL The Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the unveiling of Remembering Vets’ Invisible Wounds Memorial in Volusia County on Thursday, Feb. 22.

This will be the second memorial by the support organization created to raise awareness of PTSD and traumatic brain injury.

It will be placed in the Veterans Memorial Park in Daytona Beach as soon as the Orange Avenue bridge project is completed. The first memorial was placed at Heroes Memorial Park in Palm Coast.

At the ribbon-cutting, Cathy Heighter from Rembering Vets shared her personal story on how she became involved with vets after her son’s death.

“So that our veterans that suffer from PTSD, TBI and just our veterans in general, understand that we have not forgotten the price that they paid for our freedom,” Heighter said.
