After he was booked, The Maui News reported on Oct. 14, Marten pleaded not guilty to “five charges of first-degree sexual assault, three charges of third-degree sexual assault and one charge of endangering the welfare of a minor.” Bail was set at $650,000, according to the paper.

Prosecutors detailed some pretty heinous charges at an Oct. 14 hearing, according to The Maui News. “The alleged sexual assaults occurred between Dec. 6, 2007, and Dec. 6, 2010, Deputy Prosecutor Annalisa Bernard said,” according to the paper’s Oct. 15 follow-up. “She said

by Reuters and then advanced by The New York Times, that Yahoo had scanned hundreds of millions of personal emails at the behest of the U.S. intelligence community, was shocking. People still use Yahoo Mail? I thought. Shocking!

Seriously though, it would appear that Yahoo did simply hand over many, Many, MANY emails to the federal government, simply because it asked for them. “Yahoo Inc last year secretly built a custom software program to search all of its customers’ incoming emails for specific information provided by U.S. intelligence officials, according to people familiar with the matter,” Reuters reported on Oct. 4. “Some surveillance experts said this represents the first case to surface of a U.S. Internet company agreeing to an intelligence agency’s request by searching all arriving messages, as opposed to examining stored messages or scanning a small number of accounts in real time.”

Last week, 48 members of Congress (including Hawaii’s own Rep. Tulsi Gabbard) signed a brief letter to Attorney General Loretta Lynch and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper asking for clarification on the matter.

“As legislators, it is our responsibility to have accurate information about the intelligence activities conducted by the federal government,” stated the Oct. 14 letter.

“There is significant confusion regarding the existence and nature of Yahoo’s software program described by recent reports and the legal questions implicated by the accuracy of specific details.”

work on community plans, The Maui News reported on Oct. 16. According to the paper, “long-range planners have temporarily stopped doing preliminary work on the West Maui Community Plan update.” The reason? Both Arakawa and Maui County Council Planning Committee chairperson Don Couch hate “the planning process.” “[T]he process has too many statutory requirements, including extensive content of the plans, details on how the plans are drafted and specific amounts of time each reviewing body is allocated,” Arakawa said in an Aug. 12 letter to Couch, according to The Maui News. As for Couch, he told the paper that Arakawa’s statements “parallel what I was saying.”

While The Maui News’ Oct. 16 article does a fine job of explaining Arakawa’s and Couch’s reasoning, it offers zero voices in defense of the county’s community plans. Sure, it’s taking decades to complete the community plans, and the recent Lanai Community Plan update was, as the paper put it, “difficult,” but is it really necessary to stop the whole thing in its tracks?

“Somehow other counties manage to do

this,” former Maui General Plan Advisory Committee (GPAC) member Lucienne de Naie told me. “And a great deal of what’s in community plans is regulated by state statute. [Arakawa and Couch] are pointing their fingers in the wrong direction: the administration doesn’t like the results so they say the process is broken.”

Here’s an example of what de Naie’s talking about: the Lanai Community Plan update. It was long and difficult, but none of that had anything to do with the “process.”

There was a bad plane crash on the island in 2014 that killed and injured members of the county’s Planning Department. The island itself is also largely owned by a single individual (Larry Ellison), and the island went through a recent sale. De Naie also mentioned that when the Lanai Community Plan went in for final approval, officials altered a key phrase in the plan’s language to indicate that land use maps would only be suggestive of future development, and that the whole plan would be subordinate to zoning.

“Community plan land use designation are not regulatory,” the Lanai plan suddenly and inexplicably asserted. “The following list of designations provides general descriptions on the different types of uses.”

This was, of course, complete nonsense. “The Land use designations in community plans have the force of law based on several court decisions,” de Naie said. “This is why people are wanting a county manager. If the process is broken, it’s because of cronyism–because politicians don’t want to offend their financial base by taking controversial stands on controversial projects.”

While Marten never responded to our 2016 election candidate questionnaire that we emailed to all Maui candidates earlier this year, he did talk to the Honolulu StarAdvertiser for a Sept. 23 story on the 10th District race. Ironically, his biggest issue in the campaign is “public safety.”

“I believe legislators have failed to make public safety a priority,” Marten told the Star-Advertiser. The paper added that “Initially, Marten said, he became a candidate as a means to obtain a platform to speak about public safety issues. Over the years, he said, his platform has broadened to include an emphasis on reducing waste in the construction of schools and increasing support and salaries for teachers.”

Of course, even without the arrest, Marten faced an uphill battle in the race. He previously ran for the 10th District seat in 2014 and 2012. Kaho‘olawe’s rich culture and history is a symbol of resilience and a hope for the future of the Hawaiian Nation, according to the Kaho‘olawe Island Reserve Commission (KIRC).

The island also provides an opportunity to rebuild a cultural heritage; as the only major island in the Pacific that has been archaeologically surveyed from coast to coast, KIRC’s current inventory contains an intact record of cultural and historical significance.

The KIRC recently unveiled a collection of that inventory via the Kaho‘olawe Living Library, which is a virtual museum pilot program that features images and documents for academic, professional and personal development..

Kaho‘olawe’s history and culture come alive within the vast collection of archival materials such as reports, documents, photographs, negatives, slides and archaeological artifacts. The collection includes more than 8,500 photographs, 2,500 texts and 10,000 artifacts–all in need of proper preservation in order to be shared with the public.

Through the digitization, preservation and global sharing of a growing collection of Reserve items places and stories, this Living Library can now offer a new means of access to Kaho`olawe.

A recent survey of the community’s needs and interest in accessing the island’s intellectual resources exhibited a

clear demand for library and archived materials, according to KIRC. The organization emphasized the importance of sharing cultural wealth for all generations in a unique manner that can be blended in spite of differences and changes over the years.

The Living Library was made possible due to a two-year grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services’ 2014 Native American/Native Hawaiian Museum Services Program “We are proud that an IMLS grant has helped the Kaho‘olawe Island Reserve Commission develop its virtual museum,” said IMLS Director Dr. Kathryn K. Matthew. “This important project makes historic documents and photographs accessible to the public, fostering a greater understanding of the Kaho‘olawe culture and heritage and preserving this critical history for generations to come.”

The Kaho‘olawe Living Library will continually enable access to Hawaiian artifacts, storied places and archival materials; provide opportunities to sustain Hawaiian heritage, culture and knowledge; and preserve historic Kaho‘olawe documents and photos for access by future generations of residents and visitors, thereby perpetuating Native Hawaiian culture.

Two Maui breweries took home top honors at the 2016 Great American Beer Festival (GABF); Maui Brewing Company (MBC) earned a gold medal and Lahaina’s Kohola Brewery earned a bronze medal at the GABF competition.

The top three winners in the competition’s 96 beer-style categories were announced Oct. 8 at the GABF awards ceremony held at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. GABF, presented by the Brewers Association, is the largest commercial beer competition in the world and recognizes the most outstanding beers produced in the United States.

Maui Brewing Company was recognized in the Field Beer beer-style category for its Imperial Coconut Porter, a deeper, more intense version of MBC’s flagship Coconut Hiwa Porter; the Imperial Coconut Porter is brewed with hand toasted coconut, and subtle hints of cacao and coffee.

“We’re truly honored to have this beer win top honors,” said MBC Founder Garrett Marrero. “Almost 7,300 beers judged and less than 270 medals made for an extremely competitive race. Craft brewing is a labor of love for the entire Maui Brewing ‘ohana; they’ve earned this gold medal together.”

Pilsner, a slightly grainy, pale yellow pilsner with malt sweetness and crisp hop bitterness from Tettnang hops. The Lokahi was conditioned for six to eight weeks to give it a perfect flavor and aroma profile to compliment the beautiful island of Maui.

The 2016 GABF competition winners were selected by an international panel of 264 expert judges from the record number of 7,227 entries, plus 88 Pro-Am entries; entrants into the competition were received from 1,752 U.S. Breweries.

“The innovation, creativity and flavor of American beers was well showcased at this year’s Great American Beer Festival,” said Chris Swersey, competition manager, Great American Beer Festival.

“This was the most competitive competition to date, with a record number of entries. Congratulations to all the winners who truly demonstrated the best of America’s beer culture.”

Kohola Brewery opened in December 2015 with a 25-barrel microbrewery located in Lahaina and it specializes in genuine, local craft beers. MBC is on pace to brew 45,000 barrels in 2016, and recently expanded their production facility, located in Kihei, increasing capacity to nearly 100,000 barrels.

Police and prosecutors in Dallas, appropriately sensitive at having been the site of the 1963 killing of President Kennedy, have apparently taken out their shame on assassination buff Robert Groden. As the Dallas Observer reported in September, Groden has been ticketed by police dozens of times for operating book sales booths near the “grassy knoll� (site of the alleged “second shooter� of the president)–and yet he prevails in court every single time (82 straight, and counting). (Tip for visitors from the Observer: Never publicly utter “grassy knoll� in Dallas, as it seems particularly to offend the police.)

THE CONTINUING CRISIS Stephen Mader, 25, native of Weirton, West Virginia, and former Weirton police officer, is fighting to get his job back after being fired for not being quick enough on the trigger. When Ronald Williams Jr., in May, made a ham-handed attempt at “suicide by cop,� it was Mader who, rather than shooting, tried to talk Williams down (based on his Marine Corps and police academy training), but when Williams pointed his unloaded gun at two of Mader’s colleagues, and one of them quickly shot the man to death, police officials fired Mader for having been insufficiently aggressive.

CAN’T POSSIBLY BE TRUE Few U.S. forces in Afghanistan speak the native Pashto or Dari, and the war prospects would be dim were it not for courageous Afghan civilians who aid the U.S. as interpreters under promise of protection and future emigration to the U.S. However, the congressional battle over immigration policy has delayed entry for about 10,000 interpreters, who (along with their families) face imminent death if they remain in Afghanistan. Some in Congress also regard Afghans as riskier immigrants (despite the interpreters’ demonstrated loyalty).

SUSPICIONS CONFIRMED Master baker Stefan Fischer filed a lawsuit recently against Bakery of New York for wrongful firing–because he refused to use “bug-infested� flour to make batches of bread. According to Fischer, when he informed management of the bugs in the facility’s 3,000-pound flour silo, he was told simply to make “multigrain� bread, which Fischer took to mean that fewer diners would complain if they heard “crunching� while eating multigrain.

LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS News Corporation Australia reported in September the enviable success of a 16-yearold British entrepreneur, Ms. Beau Jessup, who has so far earned about $84,000 with a simple online app to help rich Chinese parents select prosperous-sounding English names for their babies. Users choose among 12 personality traits they hope their baby to have, then receive three suggestions (including a list of famous people with those names). Jessup got

the idea when living in China and noticing that some babies of the rich were given lame names, such as “Gandalf� and “Cinderella.�

CHINESE MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES About 200 employees at a travel service in Shandong Province were fined the equivalent of $6.50 each recently for failing to comply with orders to “comment� (favorably, one supposes) on the general manager’s daily posts to the Twitter-like Internet site Sina Weibo. And in June, a motivational trainer working with employees of the Changzhi Zhangze Rural Commercial Bank reportedly told the poor-performing bank personnel (among the 200 at the session) to “prepare to be beaten.�

WEIRD SCIENCE Trees talk to each other and recognize their offspring, according to Australian ecology researcher Suzanne Simard (most recently lecturing on the influential video series TED Talks). Trees are not independent organisms but belong to arboreal “families� with characteristics identifying them to other family members. Cow Pig Bun We’re a laid back rustic little hidden secret, serving prohibition style craft cocktails, gourmet burgers and bourbon. My go-to drink here is a Manhattan. Although it may seem boring, it’s one of my favorites.

We’re rolling out a few new cocktails this month. A favorite of mine is “the drunken Blossom” Made with Aviation gin, Amaro Nonino, lemon and house made nasturtium syrup. I honestly don’t get out much, but if I had to pick a favorite bar (besides cpb) it would have to be Luana Lounge simply because this is where my favorite bartender dwells. I love to work with Gin, because it plays well with pretty much everything.The possibilities are endless when you use gin as your base spirit. For local juices, herbs, and spirits: we use only the highest quality products. From juicing all of our own fruit to the quality of liquor in our well.

You’ll find products such as Templeton Rye,

have fresh ingredients, friendly staff, and great food. Whiskey is one of our biggest sellers. My favorites are the Masterson’s 10year Rye Whiskey. I would say at this point in my career it’s Whiskey that I like to work with. I have an affinity for old school cocktails. For Happy Hour, our smoked tri-tip nachos are unreal: housemade tortilla chips, fresh pico de gallo, IPA beer cheese, black beans, tri-tip smoked in-house and sour cream. We also have amazing wings and baby back ribs. As for a great Bloody Mary, it has to have a perfect balance of all the right ingredients. And you can’t forget our garnish: bacon, blue cheese stuffed olive, pickled asparagus and a fresh lime.

ORION HITZIG Charley’s Restaurant and Saloon Charley’s is a classic family friendly bar/restaurant with a down home feel.

It’s delicious!

TIM JONES Hali‘imaile General Store We have an inviting, old school Hawaiian plantation atmosphere here at Hali‘imaile General Store. If I am sitting here I am ordering the Lemongrass ginger frost cocktail with coconut. One of my favorite Maui bars is Monkeypod because they serve ice cold draft beer. Come by my bar and I will make you a watermelon Mojito. I made it as a special this week with two ounces of fresh watermelon, two ounces Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum, one ounce fresh lime juice, one ounce simple syrup and generous portion of fresh mint from our front garden. Muddle, shake and top with splash of soda water.Yumm!

Our award-winning Tai Mai is made with local rum, fresh limes, homemade kaffir syrup and fresh local lilikoi. Charley’s has a Bloody Mary bar on Sundays that is great to enjoy while watching football. The spices and creative garnishes make their Bloody one of the best.

MICHAEL A. COOK The Plantation House Restaurant We have a relaxed scene at the Plantation House bar. If I’m at the bar, it’s Lagunitas and a burger for me. We stock over 60 Whiskies from around the world, and we carry both local vodka Pau and Ocean. I really like to work with Tequila. Its versatility is what I like. The Plantation Style Bloody Mary is at the top–no, over. And it’s just $10.

PETER SUNDAY Pineapple Grill Pineapple Grill has it all, great atmosphere, friendly vibe, talkin’ story, watching the game and enjoying some nice cold beverages overlooking the beautiful Kapalua Bay Course. If I’m at the bar I’m having a Masterson’s Rye on the rocks. If you are stopping by I want to make you a Rye Hattan: Bulliet rye whiskey, Cocchi Vermouth and a Luxardo cherry. I would have to say Monkey Pod in Wailea is my favorite Maui bar. They

top of my list. We tend to keep a large variety of spirits on our shelf, Patron is easily a top seller. We have a great selection of tequilas beyond that. I love tequila, it tends to have an energizing nature, variety, and it goes with pretty much everything that grows locally here in the islands. The Charley’s house Bloody Mary takes the cake, it comes with bacon, or you can visit Paula every Sunday morning with her Bloody Mary bar where you can build your own. A Bloody Mary is kind of like a story: to be good, it has to have a beginning, a middle and an end. From the first sip to the garnishes, a Bloody tends to end up being a salad, all the way to the last bite or sip. I love a good balance of traditional seasonings fortified with an original and innovative touch.

We’re doing a lot with Ocean Vodka and we’re proud to keep it local. We offer Adult Shave Ice from our sister restaurant Breakwall Shave Ice Co., which is right next door. It’s a must try if you have never had it. We also pride ourselves on the classic Hawaiian cocktails: Mai Tai, Pina Colada and Lava Flow.

The Red Bar at Gannon’s The Red Bar is a stunning, friendly place to relax and enjoy some great food and drinks. We are big fans of supporting local here at Gannon’s. We carry Ocean Organic Vodka, Old Lahaina Rums, Maui Wine’s Lokelani sparkling rosé, Maui Brewing Company and Kohola Brewery beer. I really enjoy working with gin as it’s a very dynamic spirit and often under appreciated. Gin has such wonderful aromatics and the botanical overtones open the door for the use of many different herbs, spice and fruit. For drinks you have to try our Awapuhi Martini: Ketel Vodka, Stirrings Ginger Liqueur, fresh mint, pickled ginger and lemon juice. As for the pupus, the Red Curry Mussels, Spicy Ale Steamed Clams and the Kung Pau Calamari are fantastic. A great Bloody Mary? I have to vote for our Ultimate Bloody Mary here at Gannon’s; house made mix, Ultimate Vodka, Shrimp Cocktail, and a host of pickled local vegetables. A great Bloody Mary needs to have a viscosity to it. Thin Bloody Marys taste like spicy, tomato water. There needs to be a nice spice/heat to the beverage also, not make you sweat hot but spicy enough help you wake up. Finally, a great Bloody Mary has a little zest of acidity to help it drink clean and be a little bit more refreshing.

Pailolo Bar and Grill One of my new favorite drinks is the Kai Ala Farmer’s Ale beer on draft. This signature Belgian-style ale was created in partnership with Kohola Brewery and is offered exclusively at The Westin Ka‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas and the brewery’s tasting room. Kai Ala Farmer’s Ale was named after the resort’s address, which means “path to the ocean” in Hawaiian, and has sweet flavors and spiciness from rye malt with a citrus kick. Brewed in small batches with local seasonal fruit, our current barrel is made from fresh Upcountry Maui lemon peel. Another insider tip is that Pailolo Bar and Grill is run under the hotel operator’s license, which allows us to open up food and beverage services earlier than most bars, which means you can enjoy your ‘liquid breakfast’ as early as 7am during football season. We feature a fresh and innovative version of the Bloody Mary: the Poke Bloody Mary! Rimmed with Sriracha Hawaiian sea salt, each signature Poke Bloody Mary is served with a small cup of house made Poke suspended from the rim of the glass.You can enjoy the Poke Bloody Mary with poke on the side or you can drop the cubed fish into the drink for a refreshing splash of cooled ahi. This double Grey Goose cocktail has peppery tomato and crisp citrus flavors that heat up your mouth before the chilled, freshly caught and salty Hawaiian ahi poke cool it down. I like to compare it to relaxing in the hot tub, cooling off in the swimming pool and then running back to the hot tub.

JOSLYNNE MCDONOUGH Relish Oceanside Bar I would certainly say rum is the most popular spirit we serve. Most people head to Hawaii in search of a delicious Tiki Cocktail.

We have the award-winning No Ka Oi Mai Tai cocktail crafted by our bartender Junior Bumanglag, and I really think it showcases what people look for in a beach cocktail. But gin is my absolutely favorite because it’s so vastly misunderstood but is really versatile.

You can play with gin in so many ways.

People tend to have this misconception that gin is too “piney” but its herbaceous flavor is enough to elevate a cocktail and make it more dimensional. Our crafted cocktails are amazing as we use local juices, herbs and spirits. Seasonal cocktails for Fall/Winter will be unveiled soon. We’re focusing on locally sourced ingredients that our kitchens use and apply it to our bar as well. I’m really excited to incorporate a beet syrup that we’ll collaborate with restaurant Chef Jennifer Evetushick.

Steel Horse Saloon Our bar is clean and friendly with a fun neighborhood feel. We’re the Cheers of Maui! I love the Steel Horse, it’s so comfortable. I’d rather be there than anywhere else. Our regulars are welcoming and there’s always something fun happening. Plus we have the only touchtunes Karaoke on island so I can belt out a tune whenever the urge hits. We have a great selection of bourbons and good tequila.

Personally I’m a big fan of the casamigos blanco! We’ve got a rotating IPA tap from Kona Brewing. We’ve also got Koloa Rum from Kauai, it’s so good! They use local ingredients and it shows in how good it is. I like the coffee rum with some Baileys. One week I’m trying a whiskey next week it’s vodka. I like creating unexpected cocktails tailor-made for my customers tastes. My favorite spirit is lifting yours!

We get local fruits (guava, lilikoi, mangos, etc.) to make our Margaritas. The local fruit makes them even more delicious!

BRIAN J. EASLEY Luana Lounge Luana is the bar we should frequent for the right drink, done in the right way, at the right time, every time. We carry Paniolo Whiskey, Ocean Vodka and local Okolehau. Everything we serve is fantastic. My personal favorite, however, is the Whippitydo-dah. It’s basically a whipped mint julep laced with coconut. Incredibly refreshing and flavorful. Craft cocktails are our specialty. All of ours are born in the spirit of creativity and are built with great care.

Our drink of Maui is the Makalapua. It’s based with Maui Ocean Vodka and utilizes a homemade hibiscus-rose syrup. A great Bloody Mary is noted in the balance. The acidity of the tomato should be perfectly offset with sweetness, spice and salinity.

'The Shining' Now you can see Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 classic on the big screen! ★★★★★ Rated R / 146 Min.

T

he horror of a broken mind is the central concept of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, his great 1980 horror masterpiece adapted from Stephen King’s novel. Jack Nicholson stars as Jack Torrance, a recovering alcoholic and struggling writer who is hired to be the caretaker of the massive Overlook Hotel in Colorado. Accompanied by his wife, Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and son, Danny (Danny Lloyd), Jack immediately appears to be under a spell. Danny’s only friend, a cook named Hallorann (Scatman Crothers), shares Danny’s gift of telepathy, an ability to “shine.” Halloran senses immediately that something about Jack is off.

The setting has an otherworldly beauty, as the art direction and cinematography are so masterful, The Overlook has both an attractive sheen but also the feel of an empty prison. Kubrick’s film never explicitly tells us if the events we’re witnessing are supernatural occurrences or psychological hallucinations. Having seen the film multiple

times, I’m still not sure. There is a great deal of mystery to many scenes but the film offers riches of subtext and interpretations to ponder. More importantly, it’s hugely entertaining, hypnotic and an intensely terrifying work of art. Kubrick’s film holds its secrets close to the vest but few films this influential are still so potent.

There’s a noteworthy sequence at the midpoint, where Wendy hears Jack murmuring loudly from a nightmare. She runs to him down vast hallways and the camera tracks with her; as she sprints down a seemingly endless series of turns and corners, the viewer feels trapped. Like a mouse in a maze or Wendy and her son in the hotel’s maze, the audience begins to share their sense of isolation. The Overlook Hotel is so grand and spacious but Kubrick strangely gives us the feel of claustrophobia. Once Wendy reaches Jack, he awakens from a horrible dream, which he describes in a tortured, regretful manner.

This scene may be key to Nicholson’s brilliantly stylized performance. From the first moment we meet Jack, he seems meek, holding back the figurative demons that have plagued him from alcoholism and physi-

cally harming his son. It appears The Overlook is possessing Jack since he first walked through the front door. Jack’s recollection of his nightmare to Wendy is a moment of clarity and empathy breaking through. Soon thereafter, his possession grows and he again seems to be wearing a mask of sanity. Nicholson ranges from understated, darkly comic to theatrically broad and it always works.

I spent my honeymoon at The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park Colorado, the very hotel that inspired King to write The Shining. Today, it hosts an annual Mile High Horror Festival but when I was a guest in 2003, the place was already milking its genre lineage. They had a channel that showed both Kubrick’s 1980 movie and the 1997 TV mini-series of The Shining around the clock. They also had a “ghost tour” and guests could stay in the

infamous room 217 (which is room #237 in Kubrick’s film). My wife likes to remind me of the time I went to get some ice in the hallway one afternoon and I saw two twin girls passing me by. They didn’t look like the Grady twins in Kubrick’s film but they had red hair, wore matching bathing suits with towels draped from their shoulders and held hands. I saw them and froze.

Seeing The Shining on the big screen is like seeing it again for the first time. There’s so much detail in every moment and such a thrilling rush to witness the gliding Steadicam cinematography and the force of its most legendary scenes. It demands a vast screen to experience the depth of its power.
