Apocalypse Planning Session At A Wailea Resort By Mark Sheehan This report was put together from observations by hotel banquet staff and notes found at the close of a private industry seminar at a swank Wailea resort: The Book of Revelations refers to four grim figures riding horses and waving weapons: Death, Famine, War and Plague. The 21st century horsemen are corporate execs who have a long-range plan that has been in effect for years. Every few years, apparently, they go on retreat to a fancy resort to discuss progress, consider threats to their plans to annihilate humanity, and generally have a good time “making a financial killing while killing the host,” one wit exclaimed. They represent the major sectors and forces of global capitalism: defense, fossil fuel, chemical and agrochemical, plastics. Some top investment funds and bankers attend to chart progress. The oil industry representative was heard bragging about atmospheric carbon levels being at 410 parts per million, the dramatic melting of the Arctic and Antarctic poles as well as the Greenland and world glacier melt. “Climate change,” he said, “is right on schedule along with species extinction.” Another fossil fuel rep cautioned against being overly optimistic. He cited Paul Hawken’s book, Drawdown, as a sign that scientists have compiled a list of the 100 best ways to reduce global warming. “Much of our work could be thwarted if these recommendations are followed,” he said. Notes left by a chemical industry delegate reveal concern that Maui’s legal battle against their toxic practices was a dangerous precedent. “We’ve spent hundreds of millions of dollars polluting the earth! The new landowners taking over the former sugar lands are talking about growing organic crops…bad for biz!”

The plastic industry heads were confident of success about plans to saturate the oceans with their crap. “All good…but people are waking up to the problem.” Wa i t s t a f f who served lunch claimed they heard a defense contractor boast, “War profits have been the staple of growth and the engine for destroying life for centuries.” Notes from bankers or investors complained about stirring of wealth equity. “It’s taken years to rig the system… let’s not blow it. The Green New Deal is communism!” Another said, “We could wind up like Denmark if we don’t watch out.” There were copies of the Hawaii Climate Change Vulnerability and Adaptation report lying around. One had a note attached that read, “Disaster is on track here in the mid Pacific, but we should be careful not to ruin our favorite vacation site.” A banquet manager reported finding copies of the February issue of Hawai’i Business, which has a 20-page CHANGE report about the challenges people in the Aloha State have making ends meet. The article claims that 51 percent of Maui families are in poverty or on the edge. “This is dangerous information,” someone said. Another praised hotel profits being at an all-time high, and a hotel honcho regretted the success of the recent Ka’anapali hotel strike. “Socialism is on the rise,” he insisted.

No one found any ‘final report’ from the meeting, though a faction spoke in favor of slowing down climate change in order to protect their favorite beaches. One note consisted of a list of organizations whose work was seen as detrimental to the success of these apocalyptic marauders. It included unions, social service agencies, and well-known environmental groups such as the Sierra Club and Maui Tomorrow. A bellman overheard a group talking about which efforts were best at destroying the earth. “They could not agree if carbon or plastic pollution was best, or if food insecurity and wealth inequality was more destructive. They all agreed that the organic meals served at the hotel were great and they loved the service.” I contacted the hotel’s management to ask who organized the group, but never got a call back. Because of the selfishness and factionalism of this group, the planet has a slim chance of saving itself, unless we dial back the needless wars and stop poisoning the soil. Seriously, though, Maui is worth preserving. Don’t you agree? If we get better informed and better organized, we can preserve these special islands we are privileged to call home. We have reason to hope the new council will tackle big problems and the new landowners will grow healthy food for us.

Inspiring Change

“Change is the only constant in life.” - Heraclitus, pre-Socratic Greek philosopher What inspires change for you? Are you on the path of continuously improving yourself — body, mind and spirit? Many of us just muddle along, attempting to get by. If that’s the case, don’t judge yourself if you are happy and satisfied with the way things are! But if you are deciding to make changes, this edition can inspire you. Each moment we have an opportunity to change our thoughts and perceptions about our world and ourselves. We can pick and choose from the menu of experiences that life offers, just like we can choose healthy or unhealthy foods for our diet. Consciously choose the good! Some changes we have control over, other changes we do not. Alcoholics Anonymous offers a wonderful Serenity Prayer: “God grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, courage to change the things we can, and wisdom to know the difference. ” If life has handed you lemons, make lemonade! Bless your life, and see the ‘negative’ experiences as good and as part of your learning. Developing a deep trust in the process of life can aid your journey, and help you to know that all will turn out well. - Eric T. Richter, publisher

Following Our True Calling

By Sara Schroepfer When we desire change in life but lack the inspiration or courage, what can we do? I default to the voice within that becomes clearer the more I listen. Before I learned this, my path didn’t make sense. Obstacles and traumas scattered the way, which in time turned into my greatest strengths. Each step in my personal life was leading to yoga, meditation and energy healing, but these conflicted with my ambitious, external life. After applying to law school at age 27, I embarked on an epic journey to India that spanned seven months and two trips. Living in an ashram, I dove into silence; and my inner voice that I had turned down got a chance not just to speak, but to scream at me! I was dying inside. It was time for change. Once home, the voice led me to massage school, yoga training and adventures in Peru to study with shamans. I opened my first healing center and met my husband. He brought me to Maui; and two beautiful boys and a thriving business later, I still reflect on what I would have missed if I had not followed that voice. Living your truth and following your dreams is not always easy. It takes courage and stamina to trust there is a larger plan. You will be challenged along the way, yet as the hero of your story, you will triumph. Every day, we choose what life we want to live: free and happy, or confined and restricted. What grows is which one we feed. We are given the opportunity to tune each day and follow our true calling. This is the magic of life and once accepted, it is beautiful and humbling to witness when we stand in our truth. Sara Schroepfer is co-owner and director of 808 Wellness, and a shamanic practitioner. 808 offers acupuncture, massage, energy medicine, holistic retail, and an event and yoga studio. Pain Inspires Change

By Gayle Barklie Living your soul’s purpose means doing exactly what you’re innately called to do — sharing your unique gifts and making an impact of some kind, small or large. It doesn’t mean ignoring pain, struggle or past trauma. The truth is, those “negative” experiences can actually be motivation to live purposefully. They can teach you invaluable lessons by exposing false programming and subconscious repetitive patterns, and offer opportunities to grow past limitations by reminding you who you’re not. Our natural inclination is to avoid potential pain, run from situations where we could possibly fail, and protect ourselves from loss. However, from a higher consciousness retrospective view, painful situations were likely our best teachers. Sometimes swift kicks in the butt are the best way to get woke! Changing means getting out of comfortableyet-stuck situations — perhaps that dead-end job with a reliable paycheck, or relationships you’ve evolved beyond. Your higher self knows which gifts you’re here to bring to the world. To bring those forth means taking risks and not running from whatever comes from those choices. It means trusting your soul’s truth — being entirely aligned with your soul and living from that alignment. This might mean changing everything, or just one little thing. Ask yourself: How will I feel in 20 years if I don’t take this leap? How will I feel if I do? With a clearly visioned soul purpose, things fall into place. Integrating action steps to support results creates empowerment, attracting those excited about your offerings as well as serendipitous and unexpected support. Plus, your inspired shifts inspires shifts in others. Regrets over time lost from succumbing to fears, is tough to get over. Get woke to yourself now! Gayle Barklie, MFC, CHT, created Soul Purpose in 1991 to help clients transform from struggling to inspired, utilizing hypnotherapy, past life regression, life between lives, clinical art therapy, marriage and family counseling, equine assisted therapy. Ancient Taoist Approach To Modern Stress

By Paul O’Brien Feel rushed? Even when you’re on vacation? Worried about the future? Overwhelmed? Fast-paced living creates “hurry-sickness”– a sense of desperation and time-pressures that are draining. We’re conditioned to chase money, power, success – ever embracing a wilder, faster pace of life. Despite a rise in stress-induced illnesses, we continue onward in a furious race to an imaginary finish line. The anxiety we feel breeds muddled thinking which leads to poor choices. Poor choices lead to more problems, pain and suffering. It’s a race to the finish that we’re destined to lose. Yun Rou, a modern Taoist monk I interviewed on my Pathways show (see, offers wisdom pointing to a better way. Tao, in fact, means “the Way.” It refers to living life in harmony with nature. Many of us spend our time and energy doing battle with life when the key is to live in harmony – through a Taoist alchemy that finds the balance between action and non-action, between assertion and letting go of resistance, as circumstances dictate. Yun Rou uses the term ‘rectify’ to refer to the effort it takes to bring things out of whack back into balance. We will never finally achieve perfect balance – we will always be rectifying – but it’s fun trying and getting better at it. Otherwise, we squander considerable effort and time trying to force the universe to bend to our will. So very exhausting! Below are four Taoist secrets to doing less and getting more done. 1. Be like water – in the flow. In his book, Mad Monk Manifesto,

Yun Rou notes that we are each called upon to become a sage, defining sage as “a person who deeply senses the flow of the world and moves with it, not against it.” But how do we learn to yield and not resist? Taoists embrace the image of flowing water: when a stream of water is confronted by a rock in its path, it flows effortlessly around it or over it, rather than banging its head against the rock. Flow like water. 2. Cultivate inner peace. Meditation, Tai Chi, Yoga – all of these ancient methods can be used to help us calm our anxious minds and reduce stress. If we imagine the principles of yielding, softness, centeredness, slowness, balance, suppleness and rootedness that these methods draw upon in a balance of stillness and movement, then we will sense our connection with nature, harmonize ourselves to her ways, and cultivate the inner peace that we all need and subconsciously crave. 3. Find the balance. An important first step toward attaining this solution to modern stress is by learning to recognize and align ourselves with the movement of life itself. This is achieved through an understanding of yin and yang and finding the balance points of life’s ever-changing dance of polarities – light or dark, up or down, feminine and masculine, giving and receiving, consuming and sacrificing. Balance is the Way. 4. Practice gentleness and compassion. Mistakenly interpreted as weakness, true gentleness is a courageous sensitivity, respect, and reverence for all life. Its companion virtue, compassion, brings acceptance, generosity, forgiveness, and love. How wonderfully ironic that caring about others’ happiness as if it were your own will reduce your stress level and improve overall well-being for everyone. Yun Rou sums it up: “Compassion is the key element of the awakened, rectified life.” Paul O’Brien is author of Great Decisions, Perfect Timing and the “Visionary I Ching” App. He is host of Pathways podcasts and founder of the non-profit

The Four Corners Of Love

Decoding The Structure Of Relationships

By Paul Gotel

In a new revolutionary model I developed, every human relationship falls into one of four categories: Lover, Friend, Partner, or Colleague. This model, which separates the different aspects of relationships into four corners, avoids the confusion of a single ideal. It identifies what is working (strong areas) and which areas need attention (growth areas). With this understanding, we have the clarity to not only evolve as individuals but within every relationship. In the next two issues of Maui Vision Magazine, I will identify the core qualities and aspects of each. In the first corner we have the Lover; its main goal is to be infused with passion. A passionate lover is one who allows the flow of love to outwardly express fully and without restriction in relation to everyone and everything he or she encounters in life. A passionate lover does not hold back this natural expression of his or her true essence for any false fear that it is limited or that it needs anything in return. The true nature of Love is the absence of conditions; and the only way to truly feel love is to express it unconditionally with a passion for life, realizing that expressing one’s true self unreservedly is the greatest feeling one can experience. Within the Lover corner are many aspects, including romance, eros, sensuality, sexuality,

attraction, chemistry, charisma, beauty, touch, intimacy, tenderness and passion. This is the fire of attraction that is ignited, and we can feel it both in sexual relationships and in platonic relationships with friends and family without sexuality. It is often the first corner to cause a relationship to occur, yet it needs to be nurtured and stoked to create an ongoing fire that fuels the other corners. In the second corner we have the Friend; its main goal is to be infused with caring. A caring friend is one who genuinely cares for your wellbeing, and who puts their concern for you above their judgment of you. This caring is rooted in compassion, not pity. It sees you as the most magnificent being that you are; and while there is space and sensitivity around the challenges you may face, the caring friend holds you to that vision when you forget. They will not hold you to ransom or ask you to betray yourself for them, but they will also be humble

enough to reveal their own vulnerability. Having the courage to trust you with their whole being, and vice versa, this creates compassion for each other. This genuine connection allows each of you to evolve on a soul level, taking space when needed but never severing the integral bonds of truth that are so rare. You will always be ready to forgive and see each other in the highest light. Within the Friend corner are many aspects, including caring, compassion, communication, trust, vulnerability, honesty, integrity, humility, forgiveness, truth, courage, connection, alignment, beliefs, authenticity, comforting and spirituality. This is the spiritual glue of the relationship. This corner reflects the core values that give us longevity more than any other corner, for they hold the greatest value of allowing ourselves to be witnessed totally as we are. Knowing who we are, we trust and share ourselves authentically with another. Paul Gotel is an author, speaker and life coach who offers coaching sessions, workshops and seminars. Stability Requires Change

By Rich Ralston Are you looking for stability in your life? Having stability begins with change. First we need to identify the habits in our lives that are creating instability, then replace them with beneficial ones. This requires desire, willingness, and faith that change is possible. Seeing yourself in the desired state of change can be very helpful. The greatest transformation in my life came when I decided to change my theological beliefs from an orthodox belief system to following a spiritual path that was determined by what my soul wanted to experience. I learned how to release unwanted paradigms of thinking and change myself. This inspired me to write the book, Subtle Energy and the World We Experience. Learning to identify emotions that trap you into certain paradigms of thinking takes effort, and at first can be uncomfortable. I believe that fear and lack of selfconfidence are the fundamental emotions that restrict people from beginning to change. If these emotions are preventing you from changing, then start by asking yourself why you act or feel this way. If you identify the source, this may help you release the energy holding the root cause of the emotion. The book I have written has helped many people, and many other books out there can offer advice for change. I encourage you to explore the information that is available. The rewards of freeing yourself from restricted patterns of behavior are tremendous. When you realize you have the power to change, it opens new avenues for your soul to prosper and experience new ideas. I wish you the best of success for your life. Rich Ralston is a clairvoyant energy worker and healer. His abilities include chakra clearing, releasing energy blockages, energy release instruction, past life karma clearing, and communication with souls of the dead as well as crossing them over. Explaining Chi Nei Tsang

By Sheri Brinks Developed by the White Cloud Taoist Monks in ancient China, Chi Nei Tsang (CNT) is a healing touch therapy. It integrates the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of our being. CNT goes to the very origin of health problems, including psychosomatic and emotional responses. It effectively addresses chronic conditions such as digestive problems, headaches, chronic fatigue, menstrual cramps, sciatica, uterine fibroids, infertility, insomnia, depression and more. Rooted in ancient Chinese Taoist techniques, CNT is a non-invasive method of abdominal massage that translates as “working with the energy of the internal organs. It is a deep and powerful healing modality that works with the inner organs (bladder, kidneys, small and large intestines, liver, gallbladder, stomach, spleen, pancreas, heart and lungs), core muscles, soft and deep tissue, nerves, acupressure points and energy lines. CNT works mainly on the abdomen with deep, soft and gentle touches, training internal organs to work more efficiently. Unprocessed emotional charges are also addressed in this manner, as well as all of the body’s systems: digestive, respiratory, cardiovascular, lymphatic, nervous, endocrine, urinary, reproductive, musculoskeletal, and the acupuncture meridian system. CNT enhances energy flow to all of the major systems of the body. Through breathing exercises, energy cultivation practices known as Chi Kung, meditation and precise organ manipulations, students learn techniques to recognize patterns of tension in themselves and others, to clear internal dysfunctions and energy blockages, to raise their healing energy, and to restore vitality to different parts of the body. CNT detoxifies and tonifies internal organs, uncovers repressed emotions, and releases structural tensions. CNT is a complete system of self-development that emphasizes selfempowerment. It complements any existing practice. Sheri Brinks, Chi Nei Tsang practitioner and Macrobiotic counselor, has over 20 years of experience and teaches classes worldwide. For information on private 1-hour treatments, upcoming classes and trainings with Sheri on Maui, visit, call/text 310.490.7493, or find her on Facebook. Courses on Maui in March, April and June.

Health, Wellness And Death By Lisa Jones What does death have to do with health and wellness? Everything! Many people love to eat, drink and not exercise. Let’s face it, eating whatever your heart desires and lounging around is fun, especially when you’re on vacation. Unfortunately, the more you do it, the more it becomes a habit that is difficult to break. You start putting on weight and the next thing you know, you’re having a health issue. You consider going to the doctor or changing your habits, but you put it off because it’s expensive to go to the doctor, or you don’t think it’s anything serious, until suddenly it is. You finally go to get checked out and you’re told that you have a serious life-threatening illness like diabetes or cancer. Suddenly, death is looming in front of you. Now you’re ready to make the changes – improve your diet, start exercising, and maybe even start checking things off of your bucket list. The problem is that by the time a serious issue is diagnosed, many times it’s too late to turn the ship around. How about starting right now? Today. Start eating better. Start meditating. Start that yoga practice you keep thinking about. Start taking steps toward accomplishing the activities that you’ve always dreamed of. All you have is now; it sounds cliché, but it’s true. Doing the work I do, I know that no one wants to have regrets at the end of their life. Eventually, you are going to come to your final time on earth. Before that time comes, I’d like you to consider reading this article as a wake-up call to implement a health and wellness routine that supports who you are and what’s best for your body, mind and soul. Lisa Jones, Millionaire Medium, is an author, speaker, spiritual psychic medium, transition coach, and Hospice Maui advocate and volunteer. Let Go Of Resistance To Pain

By Joe Swartz, M.D. Love is a great motivator that inspires change. The other great motivator is pain. Pain can destroy you or it can become your best teacher. Pain is a teacher none of us would choose. But if it is in your life, you can use it to make the deepest changes – in diet, in exercise, in other habits, and especially in your thinking. The change that is inspired by pain is 100% related to your attitude about the pain. How do you view your experience of pain? If you view the pain negatively, you will experience guilt and despair. Then the pain will feel meaningless, destructive and fearful. You will suffer. We all have an aversion to pain, and we all have pain. Suffering comes from our resistance to pain. It is our suffering we can control. We can control our suffering by letting go of our attack thoughts and grievances. All grievances, from dislike for the color of something to hatred for human injustice, are nothing more than attack thoughts. All attack thoughts destroy your peace of mind. Observe your mind. Whenever you notice any negative thought, label it as an attack thought and let go of the thought. Don’t resist the negative thinking, but don’t believe it either. By labeling it for what it is—nothing more than an attack thought—you will observe less and less negative thinking. Even better, replace each attack thought with the thought of a blessing. We all want the same thing—true happiness. Letting go of grievances and attack thoughts is the pathway out of suffering. Joe Swartz, M.D. is an advanced Rolfer who has been successfully treating chronic pain that has failed all other treatments for 30 years. Call Dr. Joe at 808.344.0244 to learn how you can painlessly heal from headaches, PTSD, TMJ, sciatica, and back, neck, shoulder, knee, abdominal and post-operative chronic pain.

Make Way For The Women By Amorah St. John When it comes to inspiring change, my vote goes to the brave and spirit-led women representing us in Congress this year. To go up against the old boy’s network is both daunting and inspiring. Wouldn’t we have a more peaceful, compassionate and productive society (free from crippling competition) if women took the helm in 2019 to bring a fresh and much-needed voice to the legislature? Watch for signs of quantum change this year as the women in Washington D.C. roll up their sleeves to lead this country in a new direction. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez appeared recently on the Stephen Colbert show and got a standing ovation. She’s the youngest woman in Congress, and she is already making a big splash. When asked what she had to say about the government shutdown, Alexandria said, “We now have more free time to make trouble!” Since June, I have been ‘inner-viewing’ some of Maui’s great and glorious females on my radio show, “Gutsy Women.” Recently, Lei’ohu Ryder and Maydeen Iao were guests talking story about the state of the union and the importance of practicing gratitude for all that we have, and choosing to allow rather than resist. Webster’s defines “gutsy” as determined, courageous and filled with spirit. Clearly, it’s our time and our turn to steer the great ship of state into new and calmer waters. The pendulum will, as always, swing back the other way, and women everywhere will take the lead — not only in politics, but in business and most every form of human endeavor. Carry on, gutsy women! Our country is hungry for your nurturing ways and loving hearts. On March 8th, we celebrate International Women’s Day. Let’s make this a turning point … from darkness to light heralding a new dawn and a new day. Amorah St. John is host and producer of “Gutsy Women” radio show on KAKU 88.5 FM, which broadcasts live on Fridays, 11am - 12 noon.

Answering The Call From Within By Jeff Von Schmauder Life is an ever evolving sea of change. As we begin to learn how to navigate through these changes, we must remember that it gets easier with perspective and time. When we make a conscious choice to accept everything that comes with that choice, we are able to embrace change and it becomes our “new” normal. We are constantly being given the opportunity to accept what is or to make different choices. I believe that decisions have consequences, and if we are not happy with the consequences of our lives then it’s time to make different choices. Many factors come in to play when we embrace change and take leaps of faith. But these decisions are critical in our growth and personal development. As you are reading this article, I encourage you to make a list of three things you would like to change in your life. Then begin to make choices that navigate you towards the change and embrace what comes. It’s these critical choice points in our lives that make all of the difference. And this inspiration will come from within when we let go of fear, trust, and believe it will be okay. You will be amazed how circumstances will align, and change will become easier and easier. Change is constant. We just have to allow and accept it, as well as take action. Life starts with a breath and ends with a breath. The opportunity for us is to live and create a happy life between these two points in time. May 2019 bring you much joy and happiness, and may you keep embracing the inspiration of change as it comes from within. Jeff Von Schmauder is the founder of Union Yoga (Hawaiian yoga modality). He can be reached at or 808.518.4577.

Moving From The Known To The Unknown By Dr. DreamingBear Yesterday my mother died, and today I opened my eyes from a dream and let the universe pour in. Self re-discovery. Endless, deathless caravans of color and light pervade my mind. I finally perceive the poetry all around me as the intimacy of moments unfolds before my senses. Whole lives based on sentence fragments, the smell of a scent as someone passes by, the inextricably fleeting glance from one pair of eyes to another. I am determined to know the anatomy of the moment. Everything that comprises everything all at once, from the tiniest of atoms colliding, to the most cosmic explosions ever, and everything in between. From first kisses, to falling in love, to the teardrops that herald goodbye. Our lives are but evaporating breath upon the universal mirror. From the moment we’re born in the flesh till the moment we are born again in the unknown, is but a single instance. Even as we are happening, so is everything else! How inexpressible and utterly elaborate is the poem of existence. I want to memorize the eternity of every single being! I want to write love upon my heart, and see Jupiter as a work of art. I want to leave behind all the things that do not matter in the end, things that make us enemies instead of friends. Time to revolutionize the very way I live, my thoughts and actions dedicated exclusively to making this life more beautiful and worth living while I still can. I reorganized my list of priorities by scratching money and social acceptance right off, and then writing the word laughter in their place. Moments are all we really have in this life of ours. You take nothing with you, except your soul’s lived experiences, every hug and kiss, and every selfish cruelty. How we spend our moments is how we spend our lives! This very second, we could be trans-

forming reality into a beautiful re-creation of nature’s own heart. Being born is never easy; it’s full of pain and blood and poetry. And being reborn is no different. Once we’ve managed to become a fulfillment of our greatest potential, it will have been worth all the suffering. Every tear you’ve cried is another drop in your heart’s ocean; every pain that has cut you has only made your soul run a little deeper. Every tragedy that’s caused you to be broken, can become the strength that puts you back together! Realize! Recognize who you are! You are an infinite intricacy, an endless work of art, the summation of God’s own poetry. I’ve lost everyone now that I once knew as family. No words for what it is like to be motherless. With a family in refugee camps of Lebanon. We are a war torn generation. As angry as we have the right to be, we must always remember that we have the power to be the author of our own re-creation. Out of the depths of sorrow I have written myself wings. I challenge the air with my lung’s capacity. I scream words of revolution hot as primordial fire!

Nothing and no one can take away our dreams — not religion, nor politics, nor power-money-hungry anything’s. You and I can be as free and unlimited as we allow ourselves to be. Shed your inhibitions and dance with me in the streets. Raise your voices to say the most beautiful poetry. Even if life has been ugly, look deep within for beauty. Feel every grain of sand, every flower petal, every gust of wind, every single kiss, every time you felt like you could almost fly. Release every intense moment you held onto; say goodbye like it was your last and most sacred offering. Every teardrop and every subtle smile, and all the laughter and hugs you’ve given along the way, are the truest spiritual treasures one could ever hope to be rich in. What could possibly be more exciting than this moment right now? This is another moment for you to do something wonderful and amazing, something so unbelievable that the world will know it’s real. The realest things in the world are our thoughts, actions and feelings … let’s liberate these! In every heartbeat, every breath inward, every exhale and every eye blink, something truly holy and unutterably fascinating is happening. We are happening! We are happening at this moment, right now. Be aware of everything. Be actively engaged in experiencing life for yourself. No more watered down versions; go out and be the real thing. You can be anything. All you’ve got to do now, is believe.

Inspiring Change

By Katharine Ayers Change does not have to be a gut-wrenching experience. It can be natural, even effortless. Organic Intelligence’s teachings and sessions are oriented toward simple human pleasures rather than the “what’s wrong” paradigm. Simple human pleasures include smelling a flower, enjoying a good meal, having an intimate conversation with a friend, or experiencing a beautiful sunset. Giving attention to what is pleasurable and satisfying helps to rewire the brain in a healthy way. This is a radical concept in modern therapy, and is supported by current research in brain science. (Check out books, YouTube videos, and articles by Rick Hanson PhD.) Hanson explains, “neurons that fire together, wire together.” Repeated patterns of positive reinforcement can bring about neural change and restructure the brain. You can use your mind to change your brain. This is called self-directed neuroplasticity. Two pillars of Organic Intelligence are mindfulness and compassion. Mindfulness and external orientation encourage here-and-now awareness. This brings the attention into the present. In contrast, ruminating on the past disorganizes the biology. Repeated practice of mindfulness and orientation fosters happiness, love and wisdom. The job of the Organic Intelligence therapist is to shepherd the client’s nervous system and physiology and the direction of intrinsic patterns of selforganization and regulation. She attunes to the client’s spontaneous and organizing expression in image, sensation, orientation, cognition and emotion. She tracks how this occurs according to a specific three-phase protocol that supports the client to move from biological disorganization to biological organization. This cultivates greater ease, resilience and harmony in the client’s nervous system and life. Katharine Stone Ayers has a Doctor of Chiropractic degree and a MA in counseling psychology. She has been in practice for over 40 years. She recently completed a three-year training in Organic Intelligence ( and was awarded a certificate as Organic Intelligence expert in 2017. Improving Emotional Health

By Manas Kshirsagar Emotional wellbeing is an important part of overall health. People who are emotionally healthy are in control of their thoughts, feelings and behaviors. They are able to cope with life’s challenges. They can keep problems in perspective and bounce back from setbacks. They have selfconfidence and foster healthy relationships. Being emotionally healthy does not mean you are happy all the time. It means you are aware of your emotions. You can deal with them, whether they are positive or negative. Emotionally healthy people still feel stress, anger and sadness. But they know how to manage their negative feelings. They can tell when a problem is more than they can handle on their own. Research shows that emotional health is a skill. There are steps you can take to improve your emotional health and be happier. You can learn how to balance your emotional health from an Ayurvedic perspective. In Ayurveda, we focus on mind, body and soul to help you understand the very basis of emotional stability. Emotional health is an important part of your life. It helps you to work productively with other people, cope with the stresses of everyday life, and react appropriately. It allows you to contribute to society and realize your fullest potential. It also affects your physical health. Research now shows a link between an upbeat mental state and physical signs of good health. These include lower blood pressure, reduced risk of heart disease, and a healthier weight. From a spiritual aspect, having a sense of purpose (or dharma), understanding your potential, and being able to fulfill your deepest desires are necessary components for a meaningful life. Dr. Manas Kshirsagar is a certified Ayurvedic practitioner and acclaimed wellness consultant. He graduated from Aloha Ayurveda Academy, and has worked as an Ayurvedic consultant at MAPI. See him on Maui April 4-5 (class in Ayurveda and Psychology) and April 6-7 (private consultations). Call Susan Wilesmith for details: 808.634.0346.

Making Desired Changes By Barbara Ensign Hypnosis is an extremely effective way to make the changes you desire in your life to create a peaceful existence. Hypnosis is as successful as the degree of your desire to make the change. Hypnosis can’t make you do anything that you don’t agree to, but it can help you achieve the changes that you want. The brain is slow to change on its own, but hypnosis can align the conscious mind and the subconscious mind to eliminate split energy. If you have split energy, you are pulling against your own current, leaving you powerless to make a change. It’s all about alignment. You can’t consciously desire a change without clearing up whichever beliefs are keeping the subconscious from aligning with that change. Once the conscious mind and the subconscious mind are in total agreement, you can easily achieve the desired change and transcend. Transcend simply means to cross or climb over all obstacles in your path, to elevate, to excel. To transcend means to go beyond any experience, any condition, any circumstance. Hypnosis will dissolve the resistance that would normally be in your life, so you can achieve your desire. A desire is defined as a wish or a longing for a request. The word desire is a Latin word meaning “from the stars.” It means to shine like the stars. It is my desire as a person and a hypnotist to be of service to those who believe in the power of desire. I choose to be of maximum service to God and those around me, to live in a manner that will set the highest example for others to follow so that we can all shine like the stars! Barbara Ensign is a certified hypnotherapist specializing in past life regression and life between lives spiritual regression. She has been serving people on Maui for over 16 years. Not Who I Used To Be By Grace Purusha It’s a stunning time … awareness hitting astounding magnitude. Bouncing around like a heavy balloon, weighed down with scenarios of once true feelings and perceptions, lifted up by the compelling draw of where I’ve not tread before, and towards what has eluded me forever until now. Reiki Supports Parenthood By Shalandra Abbey The journey of change to parenthood is an experience like no other. Challenges with conception to transition and beyond, often awaken new types of emotions. Couples wanting to have children can feel inadequate and unworthy. As each stage of development unfolds, parents and aspiring parents often search for a gentler way. Reiki Natural Healing supports and assists in the process from before conception to raising a happy, healthy child. After learning self-treatment in First Degree Training, the mother-to-be can begin preparing her body and emotions for the pregnancy, delivery and childrearing. Dad and the rest of the family can learn too, providing energetic assistance before, during and after the birthing process. For families and friends, sharing treatments with each other can be a wholesome way to securely unite their bond. Using this energy during the birthing process also helps to decrease fear for the mother, father, family and friends. It can ease labor discomfort and decrease the need for medication. Painless childbirth without medication is possible, reports a Reiki Master couple from Germany. Their baby was conceived in healing energy, and continued to receive it daily from the mother’s self-treatment as well as hands-on treatments from the father and their students. Several others sent distant treatments throughout the pregnancy. At the time of delivery, the baby arrived peacefully into the world, supported by healing hands. Noteworthy Reiki stories related to childbirth are endless. Receiving treatments throughout each stage of the growth process while in the womb, the baby’s development is gently assisted and supported. Expectant mothers report they are healthier, more relaxed, and fully able to enjoy their pregnancy and recovery time. Shalandra Abbey has been a full-time Reiki Master in Hawaii and around the globe for over 25 years. She is author of Living a Life of Reiki and member of The Reiki Alliance, an international, professional organization of Reiki Masters. Contact Shalandra at or 808.280.7704.

Spring Into Your Renewal!

By Maurgana Stiastny Spring is a time for renewal! In Chinese medicine it is the time of the liver. The liver is our major organ of detoxification. Thus, springtime is the perfect time to do a cleanse. Some of the benefits of cleansing are to lose weight, be more clear-minded, have more energy, and have fewer physical ailments and less inflammation. Quite simply, detoxing makes you feel better! People usually put on weight over the winter when it’s colder and they are not outside as much. Also, the many man-made chemicals and toxins we are exposed to, place a burden on the liver and kidneys and cause diseases in the body. Specific nutrients can help to neutralize or eliminate certain toxins in your body. We release toxins through our sweat, urine, lymphatic system, kidneys, liver, colon and lungs. Of the many different cleanses available, some are more effective than others. Oftentimes an organ is targeted, such as the liver or the colon. It’s recommended to check your parasite level because you may need to deal with parasites first. Seek a health professional to help you create the best cleansing program for yourself. We all have different abilities, time constraints and lifestyles. Still, there are many things you can do to support you to have a healthier life. Get plenty of fresh air, clean water and sunshine. Meditate every day for 20 minutes. Make sure to use non-toxic products in your home. Reduce EMFs. Eat only organic foods. Avoid pesticides. Put your feet on the earth every day to ground yourself. Get plenty of sleep. Make sure that all of your dairy and meat is grass fed and organic. Try to have good oral health. Breathe deeply and calmly. Lastly, give thanks! Finding Inspiration

By Heather Solarie The other day I was listening to the radio in my car and I heard the host tell a story about a woman who had designed and manufactured a wine glass looking like a Pringles potato chip can. The host spoke about this woman’s source of inspiration, which came from hearing the story of another woman who was banned from Walmart for life because she rode around the store in a drivable shopping cart while drinking wine from an empty Pringles container. Inspiration can come from anywhere. There are things all around us that can inspire us every day. If we want to be inspired, first we just need to tune in, be receptive, and notice what others are doing in the world that makes us think, “Wow, I like that” or “Wow, I would love to do, be or have that myself.” Even taking notice of a need — either our own or others’ — can be a catalyst giving birth to the ultimate fulfillment of the need. Second, we must believe that we can achieve the end result. Third, we need to make a plan. Fourth, we must step into action and achieve the plan. These steps are part of the creative process available to everyone. It’s how the things around us came into form. Being inspirational to others is a natural process born out of our self-expression in the world. When we tap into our unique sense of self and find ways to express our ideas, skills, abilities and inclinations, others are given the opportunity to be inspired. Opportunities to inspire are also available all the time. Inspiration may be offered through something as simple as a smile, kind word or gesture, or through the perfection of skills and abilities into extraordinary forms of art. Inspiring Time To Change

By John Gelert, LMT What does it take to inspire us to change? Does God give us a clue when the time is right? Does somebody have to nag us repeatedly before we act? It is unwise to try to change someone’s habits because that can cause resentment or a lack of commitment. Change can only happen when we are fed up with being dissatisfied with something about ourselves, and we have a plan to do something about it. Having a support group, friends or family, can help us to stick with the plan through completion. It is important to have a healthy body, mind and spirit. To feel healthy in all ways, now is the best time to start eating healthy organic food with no damaging chemicals. If we are feeling alone, now is the time to find a place where we can meet new friends. Perhaps we need to find a spiritual practice that helps us to feel better connected to God and to meet like-minded people for support. Many people who struggle with their weight, addictions or other habits, choose to change for a new year’s commitment. For some, 12-step programs can offer support and suggest help from a Higher Power. Anytime is a good time to start when you are ready and feel supported. This spring may be a great time for new beginnings – to get outside in nice weather to walk and exercise. Spring is a good time to clear out stagnation and renew your body. Think of spring cleaning! And while you’re getting that exercise or making changes in your life, treat yourself to a massage to ease the stress and renew your body. You might enjoy that so much that you want to make regular massage a welcome new addition to your lifestyle. John Gelert owns Lomi Hanamana Deep Tissue Massage Therapy in Kihei. Dream Guidance For Change

By Lalénya L. Vann Our dreams can guide us to inspire change in others and ourselves. On a personal path, we want to inspire ourselves to change for the better — by being true to our higher authentic selves, speaking from our hearts and souls, walking our talk, shining our light, and practicing compassion for all. Our example can then inspire change in others. As Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” Intention is the path to manifestation. Inspire change in yourself by writing your intention and then saying it out loud. Then direct your attention towards it through your dreams. Since dreams are messages from your soul, before you go to sleep, set an intention and ask for guidance. In the morning, decode and interpret your dream for answers and insights to your question. Write these in your dream journal. Give your dream a title, and then take action to honor it. Notice how synchronicity plays out in your waking life. Your soul always has your best interests at heart. So, use your dreams to tune in to the messages it sends you. Align with that higher frequency! Dream intentions and guidance can be shared with a group. The more people who hold an intention together, the stronger the power it has. Let’s all hold a group intention for a healthy planet with clean air and water, and sane governments that help and honor all people — a world that works for everyone. Say it out loud every morning and evening, and share it with others. Let’s send our Maui light and love to inspire change and heal our planet now! Lalénya L. Vann is an artist and certified instructor with the Robert Moss School of Active Dreaming. Ways To Inspire Making Changes

By Rhonda Felix Change is what we often hope for at the beginning of the year to improve our physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. I believe that the best way to inspire change in another is to inspire change in ourselves. These are some ways I inspire change in myself: • I first acknowledge what needs to be changed, and become aware of the area of belief that is no longer serving me. • I explore how this belief has infiltrated my life, if I have been in denial as to my lack of awareness, and how it has taken me off course. • I try to remember where this belief came from (usually childhood) and the person who may have introduced this belief to me, and I forgive them. • I ask for help from something greater than myself — some people like to call this greater power “the universe,” or “God,” or “Jesus The Christ.” Just ask; for when we ask, help is always given. It may not come in the way we expect, but keep your eyes open because it will be there! It is very important to speak with the power of authority that the situation/belief no longer has power over you. This has to be done with your vocal voice, not just inside your head. Inspiring change is what our lives are about; it is a non-stop journey. Big changes or shifts are usually followed by some sort of respite, but it’s not long before we are back at it again, moving forward, and becoming aware of a new change that we need. I believe that inspiring change in others and in ourselves is the journey of our soul. Rhonda J. Felix is a certified teacher for the work of Louise L. Hay, “You Can Heal Your Life”®. To Evolve, Resolve Conflicts

By Douglas J. Price To make clear decisions in harmony with nature, one must realize that clear visions come from your DNA consciousness, and not from the outside. Inherent within you is a program of destiny that influences the nature of who you are. However, we are also nurtured by activities in our environment that shape our character. For example, an unanticipated dramatic shock can affect our genes. Any circumstance, whether good or bad, is perfect for our soul’s growth. We are evolving when we resolve a conflict and regard it as an opportunity rather than a crisis. Every breakthrough, or resolution of a conflict, causes the DNA to mutate to a higher frequency. It makes you stronger than before. For example, when you heal a broken arm, it becomes stronger than before. Barbara McClintock, who won the Nobel Prize in the 1980s for her research on genetics of corn, observed that when corn was exposed to a earlier-than-normal change in weather pattern (extreme cold that was out of season), the mutated corn grew an extra appendage. Similarly, when we experience a specific shock to a particular organ, it will grow or break down its tissues. Once the conflict is resolved, it will reverse itself back to normal. Once a conflict is resolved on a mental or spiritual level, you will feel differently and have more clarity than before. This increases your attractor field to work for you rather than against you. With every conflict you resolve, every frequency shift you experience inside your DNA will affect every single atom in our universe. As you evolve, so all beings will evolve with you. Dr. Douglas J. Price, D.C. has over 30 years of experience in chiropractic and kinesiology. His approach to healing is revolutionary, encompassing both wellness and resolution. Author of Activate Your Brain To Heal Your Body, he teaches online and travels internationally. Contact:, 808.244.0415.

Supporting Our Future Leaders

By Judy Levy I am both inspired and terrified by our “special children.” For 40 years many clairvoyants have been told by Spirit that the “special children” were coming and that they would ‘save’ the planet. As I witness and celebrate evolution from the vantage of an elder, I have mixed feelings now that “they” appear to be here. I serve as a substitute teacher several days per week. Most days I’m inspired by some of these bright young minds, but some days I leave school despondent about the future of humanity as we know it. The parents of these kids are the last ‘pre-computer’ generation. They played outside, and didn’t have the temptations of video games and computers until middle school. These millennials and their parenting skills are now guiding the planet. As members of this global village, we all must share our wisdom and support kids to follow their unique paths. We must not get swept away by technology and it’s potential to dehumanize. Let’s help kids stay connected to the blessings from our Mama Earth. We all have kids in our lives – our own or others’. Consider having conversations (with eye contact) with them and encourage them to share their passions. Help them stay connected to books by reading a book with the younger ones in your life. In my classes, I remind kids that they each came here with a special purpose, something unique to them. I suggest they pay attention to the things they love and are good at as clues to their ‘assignment,’ and to pursue excellence in those areas. I encourage you to inspire and be inspired by our future leaders. Judy Levy is “Maui’s crystal lady,” metaphysical bookstore enthusiast, and former proprietor of Awakening in Paradise. She shares nature’s precious gifts at monthly spiritual wellness fairs at the VFW in Kihei and Temple of Peace. She offers “Judy’s angelic crystal journeys,” or crystal purchase by appointment. Facing The Challenges Of New Situations And Ideas By Matteo Musso I am autistic. You may have heard that autistic people like things to stay the same, to remain reliable and predictable. This may be true, in an effort to control that which we can in a life that often feels chaotic. But that doesn’t mean that the way things are, is always okay. And that certainly doesn’t mean I don’t want to enjoy things in a new way! Quite the contrary, in fact. The problem I have with change is that too often it comes without warning, leaving no time to prepare or adjust to the new situation or idea. I don’t think I’m alone with this as a challenge, do you? Mom and Dad put me on a special diet right after I was diagnosed with autism at age 3. In one blink of an eye, the kitchen pantry transformed from being a safe, nummy-filled haven of goodness to a drab, boring cave of pure, medicinal sustenance. I remember this even though I was only 3 years old. My viewpoint was not considered in this decision, so I felt frustrated and unhappy about it. One day, foods that I had enjoyed and felt comforted by had disappeared. Poof! I didn’t know that my body wasn’t liking gluten, dairy, nuts and oxa-

lates. I didn’t know that taking these things out of my diet would help me feel better. They didn’t talk to me about it because what 3-year-old could understand this? I think we can all make the changes we dream about once they’re identified, but I think change can be difficult if done too fast, too big or without any prep time. It doesn’t feel as good when it’s imposed upon you, either. Take time to identify the actual change you want to make, but then dive into discovering the “why’s” that surround it. When I’m invited to ponder and learn about the “why’s,” the impending change is much more cordial. Mom and I are following a new eating protocol in an effort to detox heavy metals and rid our bodies of viruses. We eased into it for six weeks, read books, and listened to podcasts in an effort to absorb the “why’s.” Together, we ‘bought in’ to this way of eating. What a difference it has made in transitioning to a new lifestyle. Of course, I’m 15 now, so I get it. So, identify (the change you want), learn and ponder (the “why’s”), then transition at a pace that’s exciting (not frustrating or stressful). Mom wanted to cut out coffee, so she cut back gradually over six weeks. When the time came to do our liver cleanse and she couldn’t have any, she only had a headache for one day (not four days like she’s had in the past when she’s tried to cut out coffee). Smart move, Mom! Change is exciting. Just don’t give yourself a headache creating it! Enjoy the journey. Matteo is a joyous 15-year-old author, inspirational speaker, and mostly non-verbal autistic young man who recently found his voice by spelling his thoughts one letter at a time on a stenciled letter board. His inspired thoughts and wisdom are now being shared with the world. Visit; search ‘Mondays with Matteo’ on YouTube.

Sacred Inspiration

By Bre Wolfe I follow the promptings of my heart when I can hear it. I hear my heart when I take the time to regularly listen. I hear you if I’ve practiced listening to me. When I feed myself healing, loving thoughts, I learn to love me more. When I love me, I love and have compassion for you. Sacred plant medicine in the form of cannabis helps me hear myself. It calms the inflammation in my body and the inflamed thoughts in my mind. It helped me get off coffee, sugars, alcohol and rushing. It helps me release fear, doubts and anxiety. With yoga, it has reconnected me to my body, increased my flexibility, and physically opened my heart. It got me in touch with my deeper feelings and senses, with my brothers and sisters, and with Mother Earth. When we use sacred plant medicine with yoga or coaching in its highest form — using proper set and setting, with full respect that it is a consciousness changing herb — we can break through negative conditioning and stuck emotional and physical patterns. It can awaken us to the highest potential inside. We can see the light that we are. Yoga with plant medicine isn’t new. It has inspired sadhus, or holy men, for thousands of years. According to chapter 4, verse 1 of the Yoga Sutras (the ancient text and authority on yoga), herbs are one of the five tools we can use towards spiritual enlightenment. The other four are: through birth or karma, mantra, devotion, and profound meditation. It’s all sacred and inspiring if we can allow ourselves to deeply pause, feel and hear our deepest self. Bre is a 500-hour Yoga Alliance yoga teacher and certified professional integrative life coach. She teaches the sacred use of plant medicine for healing and deep loving connection with our bodies and our world. For more information, call or visit her website: Spring, 2019

Getting The Unconscious On Board For Transformation Using NLP

By Ania Ananda Wood Womanifesting is a term I love to use to help emphasize the Yin aspects of manifestation: the inner alchemy involved when we actively manifest our dreams. It is overly simplistic to assume manifesting is just cutting out pictures of Ferraris and expecting the universe to drop a Ferrari in your lap. However, when we do our shadow work — when we face those forgotten parts of ourselves that secretly believe we are not worthy of good things, not worthy of love, or not allowed to have more peace and blessings than the family we came from; when we go into those places and feel and cry and metabolize the stuck emotions out of our nervous systems — our subconscious naturally can let go of the limiting beliefs, and we are no longer sabotaging ourselves unconsciously. I chose to study NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) early in my psychotherapy practice when I was looking for tools to help clients make profound changes in their lives, beyond just having insight into what wasn’t working. In NLP we understand there is an “Intended Positive Outcome,” or IPO, behind limiting beliefs, and we can unlock so much trapped life force by untangling the distortions around the IPO, thus freeing the morphic field of our consciousness for easier manifestation. I was recently having a conversation with a guest at a friend’s party, and he was telling me how he “doesn’t believe” in manifestation because thinking about how much he wants a relationship hasn’t worked for him thus far. I put aside confronting him on conflating “thinking about” with “alignment” for the moment, and helped him explore more deeply. One of the most effective questions in Transformational NLP is, “What would you lose that

Page 24 Maui Vision Magazine

you currently value if you were to have everything you say you want?” I asked him this and at first he answered, “I wouldn’t lose a thing, I would be so happy to have a sexual relationship right now, it’s what I most want!” So I had him take his inquiry deeper: “See a picture of that desired future where you have that relationship… sense into how you’re feeling and being in that future… is there anything in your identity right now that feels a little thrown off from its current equilibrium, looking at that future scene?” I watched him close his eyes and journey inward, taking time to get super honest with himself. He opened his eyes with an amused smile and said, “Oh wow! I think I would feel like I’m missing out on some kind of meaning in life

Spring, 2019

because I’m not striving anymore. And I might feel unmotivated if I actually have everything I want.” I was so happy for him to discover this! This is a perfect example of how we block ourselves unconsciously! His conscious self wanted a sexual relationship, but his unconscious identity structures wanted even more to maintain this feeling of being motivated by striving. His identity knew what to do with itself in that state; it’s like a car that knows how to drive itself on one road, while the human inside the car, having the conscious experience of the ride, is desperately wanting to take another road. His unconscious was framing the situation of his relationship quest as being the end of the book if he succeeded, while it would be more effective to think of it as the end of one chapter. Because there are other rewards beyond just the attainment of relationship. So this man realized, with a giant smile on his face, that this “striving” part of his identity didn’t have to miss out on its IPO of life having meaning, because through attaining what he wants, he can evolve his focus toward contribution to society, another very effective way to keep life rich with meaning. And that is the depth psychology approach to manifestation, or Womanifestation if you will. It works through clearing the invisible blocks, allowing the life force that is always expressing itself through us to have the space it needs to keep expanding. Ania Ananda Wood, MA, M-NLP loves empowering her clients to create the lives and relationships of their dreams. She offers sessions from her home office in Haiku or over video. Ask The Death Professor By Rev. Bodhi Be Question: I’m 47 years old and live an active life. I recently heard of an advance healthcare directive. What is it and should I have one? - Andy, New York City An advance healthcare directive, often called a living will, is a legal power of attorney specifically for medical decisions. You give someone the legal authority to make medical decisions about your health care when you are no longer able to make them yourself — for example, if you cannot speak, you’re in a coma or unconscious state, or you’re mentally incapable of making good choices. The advance healthcare directive provides some examples and choices where you can record the particular choices you would want your legal power of attorney to make, if need be. Do you want CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) if your heart stops? What decisions would you want made if you’ve experienced brain damage and are in a coma and/or hooked up to machines keeping you alive? How much pain medication would you want? Do you want doctors to take all possible measures to keep you alive? Each state has a generic advance healthcare directive available; often times, if you’re admitted to a hospital, they will provide one. When you’ve filled it out, have your original copy notarized or witnessed by two people. Give copies of your directive to your legal power of attorney and alternate listed in the directive, to your primary care physician, to each of your children, to your spouse, to your next of kin, and to your lawyer. Keep your directive where you, or someone, can easily find it. I suggest that the primary or alternate person be someone living locally. A value of having a written advance healthcare directive is that it will help you clarify your thoughts and feelings about your preferences for healthcare in certain situations. It will help you start, or continue, the conversation with your family, your doctor, and most importantly, the person(s) you are assigning to be your legal power of attorney. If you have children, it’s important they all be on the same page with you. Sometimes it’s a great way to initiate a conversation with your aging parents. Do they have one filled out? I have been in hospitals at the bedside, where having an advance healthcare directive made a real difference in the procedures and outcome of patients. And I have also seen the confusion and misunderstandings when there wasn’t one. Sometimes the grown children of a parent without a directive had different views on treatments, or felt a tremendous burden by having to guess the right course of action. It’s important to know that the decisions you spell out in your advance healthcare directive are not cemented in stone or legally binding. This means that sometimes, even though grandma said this, she might not want this, given the conditions of the moment. The legal power of attorney would then need to decide, and sometimes that decision is whether to ‘pull the plug’ to end grandma’s life. Your second question — “Should I have one?” — is also a great question. Often times, people assume that advance healthcare directives are for old people. Of course, old people aren’t the only people dying. We sometimes forget that. There’s no downside to you filling one out. You can always change it. But, hey! No hurry! You’ve got plenty of time. Changing Up Your Website

By Taryn Kama If you own and run your own small business, you know that it’s often enough work just to run your business. However, to increase your business, marketing is important. Your on-line marketing presence, including your social media (or lack of), is a major part of your marketing. Your on-line marketing efforts complement your off-line marketing strategies, which may include referral programs, print advertising and special events. One of the most important on-line marketing tools is your website. The beginning of the new year is a great time to do an evaluation of your website. This article will give you a few things to consider and questions to ask yourself. First, does your page have the minimum links, such as “about us” and “contact us”? Does your contact page have a web form that allows a user to send an email with a subject line, as opposed to just listing an email address? Ideally, it would have some kind of security measure that the user must complete in order for the website to send the form. This gives your website more credibility and cuts down on the amount of spam you will receive in your email inbox. Additionally, when was the last time you made an edit or added content? Is your content outdated? Have your hours or locations changed? Do the images look dated, or are they too low-resolution or high-resolution? High-resolution images make your website load slower, which can affect your search engine optimization. This is just a start. If you need more instruction or help with revamping your website and social media presence, I can help. Taryn Kama is a Maui-based media expert and college professor. She is the owner of Go Get it Media, a business that provides media services, coaching and workshops/education on on-line marketing for heart-centered businesses. Visit

All Is Well In All Of Creation

By Tanya Gabriel, MA Imagine if all beings could trust in the perfection of the universe. How would our relationship to events change if we believed that the universe is perfect? For the longest time I struggled with reality. My judging mind would categorize life’s events as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ and I would consistently fight against the current of that which I deemed ‘bad.’ It wasn’t until I discovered meditation and equanimity that I learned to drop the fight against reality. It is inevitable that things will happen to us. Believe those things happen to us in order to prepare us for the next chapter of our lives. We can take the perspective of victim and lament all the bad things that happen, or we can find gratitude for the profound lesson being dispensed — lessons that can only be gleaned by going through difficult times. How do you judge events? There is a story of a farmer whose horse ran away. “What bad luck!” villagers declared. “Who knows, we shall see,” replied the farmer. The next day the horse came back with more horses. What a blessing! But the farmer’s son broke his leg training the new horses. Again, bad fortune! But then the military came to draft his son into the war and couldn’t because of the broken leg. Good fortune! And so a similar story plays out in our lives when things go wrong. The truth is that all events are creating a beautiful tapestry of life. If you’re only focusing on the ‘bad luck’ threads, you will never recognize them as an integral and necessary part of the whole tapestry. What we are going through now is exactly what is necessary for our highest growth and development as souls. Allow yourself to trust that all is well in all of creation. The Bridge

Coming Into New Ways Of Understanding

By Daniel Aaron I did what I was told. The pattern of breathing was not rocket science. I’m a good student and I was following the teacher’s instructions. Still, nothing was happening. Yet all around me people were crying, screaming, apparently having profound experiences. Then it hit me. My own thought-form, a belief, flashed like red ticker-tape letters across the inside of my forehead: This is going to work for everyone else but me. Ridiculous, right? Yes, and in fact every limiting belief is absurd. The thing is, we tend to believe our beliefs. We think they are reality. That’s just the way it is. I was lucky. In that moment the realization was enough to rub it out. Then it happened. Instantly, I was standing atop the bridge where my sister had jumped to her death. But it wasn’t just me. I was in her body. Or I was her. I couldn’t tell. The sound of the cars whooshed behind me. The chain links bit into my hands, our hands, as we held on, leaning out over the water at a diagonal. In that moment I saw the harbor how she must have: dirty and depressing. My heart pounded, as if suddenly I was getting a chance to save her. But of course it had already been years. Before I could even come close to grokking it, even while my body was lying on the floor in a room at the Omega Institute in upstate New York, my sister and I let go of the fence, let go of life — and instantly we plunged toward the water below. Now the wind whipped, slapping our face as the cement of the water below rushed up toward us. Panic shot through me. Then, the instant before we hit, we were back on the bridge. It was some sadistic version of Groundhog Day, and by the time I realized what had happened, again we were dropping. The cycle raged on, each time my hysteria increasing. Then there was a hand upon my breathracing chest. “I’m coming into a new way of understanding.” It was the group leader with an affirmation. In an instant the cycle was done. I was fully back in my body, realizing my back had arched, my neck clamping down in the shape of terror. Awareness is transformative. I registered my body’s position, and immediately it relaxed. I’m coming into a new understanding. For years I’d been holding on to the pain of my sister’s suicide; my own guilt, blame and disbelief.

I’d believed I was a failure, incapable of love. What if I’d just… In the space of one breath it came to me that I’d held on to it all because I didn’t want to let go of her, of my love for her. I’m coming into a new way of understanding. It’s possible to separate the pain from the love. I could let go of the former and forever cherish the latter. Now, more than two decades later, having guided thousands of people to new understandings, to letting go of pain and trauma, I know without doubt that transformation is also not rocket science. While the egoic, survival-oriented part of all of us tends to hold on, even when it

hurts, freedom and love is only ever a breath away. That day changed my life. A hand, an affirmation, a breath, and a shift in perception taught me that anything can be healed. Walking Boldly Into The Fires Of Destruction To Taste Transformation On The Other Side

By Amanda Dobra Hope Many of us struggle in some way through our first few decades of adulthood, wondering why we are here and how we’re supposed to be showing up in the world. We’re not yet on fire. The tiny flame has begun to stir, but we have no idea what we will truly become in all of our glory. What many of us also don’t realize during these years is that the process will likely be somewhat destructive, just as fire can be. The old and worn out coping mechanisms and personas that we’ve adopted must be burned away, revealing the fresh possibilities of our original seedlings that have been long since buried. So when and how does this destruction happen, and how do we recognize it as the beginning of our true selves? How do we move through the trials and tribulations with the utmost knowing that we are moving toward something, rather than with fear that we are headed for total destruction? We need faith, an intimate knowledge of ourselves, and courage. On top of all that, we must become so curious and interested in what is on the other side of our fantastic phoenix transformation, that we can’t physically go back to the old once we’ve begun. On a personal note, I resonate so much with this quote I recently saw: “I love the woman I am, I fought hard to become her.” Some of the most defining and best moments of my life have involved total destruction of relationships, ideals, and understandings of who I had been up until then. In one of the first defining moments, all sense of conformity had been reduced to shards of what once was, blowing old versions of me away with the breeze. My new life had begun, and there was no turning back. A few years later, it would begin again, after more chaos and destruction. This time, I fought hard for a while to hang on to what had been. This time, there was even more to lose. Who would I be if I let go of what I had grown to know about myself? What would my family think? What would society think? How would I move forward if I went boldly into the ashes, not yet having any idea what would be on the other side? There was a 50/50 chance I could emerge as a brilliant phoenix, teeming with new life and vitality; but there was a very real possibility that I could end up in pieces on the ground, quite literally. What kept me going through the cycle of death and rebirth that I continued to experience? It was faith, trust, and belief that the fifty percent chance that I would rise from the ashes — more in tune than ever with who I was truly meant to be, living from my true center, and feeling my life was truly on purpose — was going to be the outcome. It had to be. Or something like it, anyway. Because as I mentioned before, once we begin the journey to our authentic self and catch a fleeting feeling of who we can truly be, there’s no going back. We must be brave. We must know that all of the little destructions are the controlled burn leading to the thriving, healthy and vital beings we are meant to be in order to fully contribute to the universe and live our lives truly on purpose in joy, hope and unwavering belief in ourselves and the ability for us all to rise into our glory.
