Manoa Cup Scheduled For O’ahu Country Club -- June 8-13
The 107th Manoa Cup (Hawaii State MatchPlay Championship) will be held at O’ahu Country Club Jun. 8-13. Defending champion is Nainoa Calip, who defeated Isaac Jaffurs, 6-and-5 in their 36-hole finals match last year. To reach the finals match Calip (seeded #22) first met and downed the 43-seed, Lion Rogers, 4and-3, and in his second match, Calip beat 54-seed Scott Ichimura, 8-and-6, which allowed him to meet and squeeze by 38-seed PJ Samiere, 1-up. Calip won his quarter-finals match with 14-seed Kango Aoshima, 3-and-1, and took his semi-final match with 10-seed Scotty Yamashita, 2-and-1 to get to the finals match… Jaffurs, who was the 30-seed, first met and beat 25-seed Loi Chang-Strom, 4-and-2, followed by a 5and-4 victory over 57-seed Trey Kidd, which moved him to his third match, which he won, 1-up, over 56seed Jarin Harada. In his quarter-final match, Jaffurs defeated 33-seed Cole Shintaku, 2-and-1, which allowed him to win his semi-final match, 4-and-3, over 29-seed Doug Williams, earning a spot in the 36-hole finals match. In that finals match, Calip birdied three of the first five holes, taking a 2-up lead into the back nine. A Jaffurs bogey at the driveable #17 hole allowed Calip to hold a 3-up lead after their first 18 holes. On their afternoon round, Calip carded a 33 on their first nine, to Jaffurs’ 35, and by the time they reached the tee box at the #13 hole (The par-five 31st hole of their match…), Calip was 5-up. He won the hole with a par-five score, giving him the 6-and-5 victory. Some of the Manoa-Cup winners recently were: Jared Sawada, who defeated Richard Hattori, 2-and-1 in 2013… In 2012, Matt Ma downed Nick Matsushima, 4-and-3… In 2011, David Fink, defending champion, defeated John Oda, 2-and-1… And Fink also won in 2010, trouncing TJ Kua, 8-and-7… In 2009, TJ Kua defeated Layne Morita, 1-up… And in 2008, Alex
Ching downed Jonathan Ota, 8-and-7… There were many more winners, as the very first Manoa Cup was contested in 1907, on the O’ahu Country Club course that had just nine holes and the format was stroke-play to get their name engraved on the Cup donated by Arthur F. Wall and James D. Dougherty, who had been members of the Manoa Golf Club. The course was different lengths as a nine-hole layout, and was expanded to 18 holes in 1913.
Nainoa Calipo defeated Isaac Jaffurs, 6-and-5 in their 36-hole finals match at O’ahu Country Club last year to win the Hawaii State Match-Play Championship (Manoa Cup). Calipo also won the 2014 OCC Invitational at the Manoa-Valley course; however, Calip turned professional, so will not defend either title this year. (Photo Courtesy of O’ahu CC)

It’s getting harder and harder to predict winners, as players continue to practice and improve from year to year… We can predict that the buffet luncheon at Waialae Country Club will be delicious!!
The format was 36 holes with handicap to determine the 16 players who would play another 36 holes without handicap, the winner being the player with the low-gross score. That format was adjusted again in 1919, when they reduced the number of qualifying holes from 36 to 18. In 1924, the tournament was restricted to amateurs only, as professionals apparently had been allowed to compete earlier. In 1926, instead of medal play, the 16 qualifiers played match-play with a 36-hole finals match… Two years later, in 1928, the Atherton Cup was contested at Waialae CC, and later that year the Manoa Cup was also played at Waialae CC. The Manoa Cup continued to be played at Waialae CC until 1933, when the Cup was played alternately at Waialae CC and O’ahu CC between 1933 and 1941. There was no Manoa-Cup competition in 1942 and 1943 because of World War II, but from 1944 to the present time, the Manoa Cup has been played at O’ahu Country Club. (Historical information was provided by O’ahu Country Club)… The Hawaiian Golf Association (HGN) was founded in 1930, and headed by Babe Carter, Norman Crowell and others… John Roberts, a member at Waialae Country Club, was the Hawaii representative to the United States Golf Association (USGA) for years, and he was replaced by Dr. Richard Ho, circa 1980. The Hawaii State Golf Association (HSGA) was founded in 1984 to provide a central point of contact with USGA and a source of handicapping through the GHIN (Golf Handicap Information Network) system. The Manoa Cup continues to be the fourth-oldest golf championship in the United States… Francis Ii Brown won it nine times… Ken Miyoka won it six times and Brandan Kop captured the Cup four times… The Manoa Cup is the most-prestigious competition in Hawaiian men’s amateur golf, as many of those who have been inducted into the Hawaii Golf Hall of Fame have at least one Manoa-Cup victory on their resume’…
