It all started
with a belief in making effective products from fresh, organic fruit and vegetables, and the finest essential oils and safe synthetics the earth has to offer. Our story goes back to 1970 when Mark Constantine and Liz Weir first met in a beauty salon in Poole, England. A few years later, Mark, a trained trichologist, and Liz, a beauty therapist, decided to branch out and launch their own business selling these natural products straight from home.

With the help of some friends from Cosmetics-To-Go, Mark and Liz spent what little money they had left on fresh fruits and vegetables. In a little shop in Poole, the group hand made products upstairs and sold them downstairs. A competition was soon launched for customers to give the company a new name. One customer suggested LUSH, and the rest was history.
In the early 80s, Mark read about the opening of The Body Shop, started by Anita Roddick. She sounded like-minded, so he offered her some of their products. Roddick instantly put in an order for £1,200 to start, and from there Mark and Liz continued to developed phenomenal products for The Body Shop. They quickly became the company’s biggest supplier for over a decade.
On a trip to England, Canadians Mark and Karen Wolverton came across the fragrant, colorful shop that is LUSH and immediately knew they wanted to bring the retailer to North America. In 1996 the first international LUSH was opened in Vancouver, and by 2003, the first American store opened up in San Francisco. We now have over 210 shops in North America, all supplied by our two cosmetic “kitchens” in Canada.
The Body Shop’s eventual purchase of Mark and Liz’s product formulas forbade them from opening a retail shop for another five years. However, they were determined to keep growing, and created a mail order cosmetics company called Cosmetics To Go. They poured what money was left into

Our Lush Values From a strive to deliver the best ingredients to fighting against animal testing, we live by these six core philosophies. FRESHEST COSMETICS The fresher the ingredient is, the better the effect it’ll have on your skin or hair. As soon as fruit and veggies are harvested, they begin decomposing and losing their vital nutrients, we always use the freshest ingredients possible. We make fresh batches of your favorite products and deliver them to our shops ASAP, so you only ever get our products freshly made and at the peak of their effectiveness.
HANDMADE There’s just something about the human touch. Walk into any Lush shop: from the products on our shelves to the wooden shelves themselves, everything is handmade by our teams. Our many compounders slice, dice and mix up fresh batches of product, while our wonderful team in our Vancouver, Canada woodshop craft unique furniture and other pieces that all use reclaimed wood.
100 PERCENT VEGETARIAN Every single one of our products is 100 percent vegetarian and more than 80 percent are vegan. Since the beginning, we’ve always actively chosen vegetarian alternatives to the animal ingredients often found in other cosmetics. For example, glycerin is typically derived from animal fat, but the glycerin you’ll find in our products is actually made from non-GMO rapeseed oil to give you the same luxurious feel from our products, while still being completely cruelty-free and derived from plants.
NAKED Every year, millions of tons of packaging ends up in landfills. And the best way to reduce it? By getting rid of it completely! ETHICAL BUYING Our dedicated ethical buying team works to not only source ingredients and packaging, but to also create close relationships with the land, people and communities that harvest them. Ingredients are traced from planting to processing to ensure that the process is ethical from start to finish.
FIGHTING ANIMAL TESTING For decades, we’ve been fighting against animal testing. We actively choose the best ingredients from companies that don’t commission tests on animals and when we develop new products, we only test them on human volunteers.

We believe that it’s the hard work, dedication and results that matter, not how the group is registered. Finally, we believe in telling customers how much of their money will be donated and to whom.

Fighting For An End For over three decades, we’ve fought to bring
an end to animal testing. Now it’s part of our legacy. We believe in only buying ingredients from companies that don’t commission tests on animals, and we only test our products on human volunteers—beliefs that are a company-wide policy. It’s no longer a legal requirement to test cosmetics and their ingredients on animals. Science has come a long way and there are now roughly 20,000 established cosmetic ingredients that have already been deemed safe. There are also a growing number of proven, non-animal test methods that are scientifically superior, faster and cheaper. For instance, a few groups have developed 3D human skin models that can fully replace rabbits for skin irritation testing—and it’s proving to be even more predictable for human reactions. Our goal is to continue to inform, encourage and participate in the fight for animal rights. We’re passionate about the quality of our products and the safety of our customers, so we happily comply with federal safety standards. We also support the development and validation of non-animal tests and campaign against legislation that requires animals to be experimented on. Our strict policy is unique, but we want to inspire our peers in the cosmetics industry to adopt the same stance along with our wonderful customers to shop smart.

The term “Fair Trade” has become a buzzword lately, but what is it, and why do we care
about it? Put simply, fair trade means buying goods at a fair price from people who produce them. In exchange, producers use sustainable production practices and uphold fair working standards for their employees, benefiting both the earth and the communities involved. GUARANTEEING FAIR PRICES Prices for many of the ingredients we use – cocoa, almonds and coffee are just a few examples – can change unpredictably because of factors like global demand, extreme weather or crop failures. While fluctuating prices may not be a problem for larger farms, small producers can find it challenging to make a profit when their products’ prices fall.
FAIR TRADE AT LUSH Look at any of our products’ ingredient lists and you might find the phrase “fair trade”: this identifies which ingredients have been certified fair trade by an organization like Fair trade International, Fair Trade Federation or Fair For Life. Many of our ingredients have been certified fair trade, but many others haven’t. This can be because they are grown in a country that isn’t covered by certifying organizations, or because they aren’t produced on a large enough scale to be eligible for certification. Sometimes, certification fees are just too expensive for the supplier to pay for.
In a fair trade agreement, the product being traded is given a minimum price. Even if the average market value falls below this point, the seller is guaranteed to be paid the set minimum. On the other hand, if the market price rises above this minimum, the purchaser pays the higher price instead. In this way, producers are protected from dips in prices while also benefiting from surges.
In some of these cases where the supplier hasn’t been fair trade certified, we set up a direct trade relationship in which we pay them a fair trade rate and premium for their products and require them to abide by the standards around fair working conditions and sustainable practices outlined above. This is a win-win workaround for both us and the supplier!
Purchasers also pay an additional premium any time they buy from a fair trade supplier. These premiums can be invested in community development areas like access to clean drinking water, food security, childcare, education services, alternative energy sources and reforestation projects.
WHERE WE GO FROM HERE Our aim is to nurture existing relationships and develop new ones with suppliers for all of our ingredients. This way we can ensure we’re contributing to fair wages, environmental sustainability and good working conditions. Through direct trade, mutual respect and regular visits, we have found ways to make our trade partnerships stronger while ensuring that prices and conditions are right and fair.
PROTECTING EMPLOYEES To become fair trade certified, producers must agree to uphold fair standards regarding employees’ compensation, scheduling and workplace safety. Some industries are known for using child and slave labor, so to ensure that we don’t support or take advantage of these practices, it’s important for us to establish these expectations with our suppliers. Producers must also agree to use environmentally sound farming and production practices in order to be certified fair trade.

8 Things You Didn’t Know About Coconuts Did you know that for centuries, coconuts have been used in everything from food to cosmetics? It’s true! In fact, coconuts are far more versatile than meets the eye. We use coconut oil to soften and moisturize hair, to soothe dry skin conditions and to add a touch of the tropical with its fragrance. Hair and skin also benefit from the mineral and vitamin content of coconut oil. Here are 8 facts you might not know about coconuts.
1. THEY’RE MORE THAN JUST FRUIT Coconuts are considered to be a nut, a fruit and a seed. Even though it has ‘nut’ in its name, a coconut is classified as a drupe—a fleshy fruit that houses a seed, just like peaches or olives. 2. A SINGLE COCONUT CAN DO A LOT Inside the coconut, you’ll find two main parts: the fleshy, white meat and water. Both can be consumed in their natural form, but they’re also used to make milk, oil, sugar, flour and butter. 3. THEY’RE MORE POPULAR THAN EVER They’ve been around for millions of years, but only recently have coconuts reached celebrity status. Coconut water’s high potassium and low sodium make it a great way to rehydrate after workouts, coconut oil is replacing butter in vegan baked goods, and coconuts are keeping skin and hair hydrated and happy in cosmetics. 4. ORIGINS: UNKNOWN The origin of the coconut is still being debated! It’s generally accepted that they originated in the Indo-Pacific region and caught a ride on ocean currents, taking them to other parts of the world.

5. IT DOES SKIN AND HAIR GOOD In our haircare creations, we use real coconut. The oil increases hair’s tensile strength and shine by coating each strand, while the dried stuff (called desiccated coconut) removes excess natural oils for balance and bounce. Coconut oil is also easily absorbed into the skin, which is why you’ll find it in some of our solid massage bars that’ll soothe, moisturize and glide easily over the skin.
6. RARE IN AMERICA There are only two states in the U.S. where coconut palms can grow and reproduce without irrigation. They are (drumroll, please…) Hawaii and Florida. Their warm temperatures, high humidity and regular rainfall make them ideal for happy trees.

What is Self-Preserving? More than 65 percent of Lush products are
self-preserving, which means they don’t require any synthetic preservatives to stay fresh. WHY PRESERVATIVES? Synthetic preservatives are used widely in food and cosmetics to extend their shelf life and prevent bacteria from growing. Different preservatives have unique methods of battling bacteria. For example, preservatives like methylparaben punch holes in bacterial cell walls or membranes, which prevents bacteria from reproducing. Others like benzyl alcohol (which can also occur naturally in essential oils), prevent microbes from forming cell walls and also prevents reproduction.
WHY “SELF-PRESERVING?” These products are called self-preserving because their formulas have been expertly balanced in a way that the ingredients themselves keep the product clean of excess bacteria growth. Calling them preservative-free would be misleading, as many of these products contain ingredients like honey and salt, which have been used as natural preservatives for centuries! PRESERVED OR SELF-PRESERVING? Although many of our products have always been selfpreserving, some of our best sellers are now available in both preserved and self-preserving formulations. These include Ocean Salt Face And Body Scrub, Dream Cream Hand And Body Lotion and Mask Of Magnaminty Face and Body Mask. So what’s the difference between the preserved and self-preserved versions?
INNOVATING PRESERVATION Synthetic preservatives are effective at what they do, but when they’re washed down our drains, they enter waterways where they accumulate and may have toxic effects over time. For this reason, our inventors have been creating cosmetics for decades that don’t require synthetic preservatives—every one of our solid inventions like shampoo bars, bubble bars and solid conditioners are self-preserving. Because bacteria need water to survive and grow, these innovative solid products are formulated with little or no water and are perfectly balanced without synthetic preservatives.
Aside from the fact that they don’t contain any synthetic preservatives, our self-preserving formulas tend to look slightly different from the preserved formulations: they’re usually a little darker in color, have a thicker consistency and feel a little different. However, their shelf life and the effect they have on the skin is exactly the same as their counterparts.
One way we’re creating self-preserving products is by using natural ingredients that keep bacteria at bay in our liquid products. We use ingredients like salt, as well as clay, calamine and talc to absorb excess water, and glycerin and honey, which have very low water content to create an inhospitable environment for bacteria. All of these ingredients allow us to use less water in our formulas. Moisturizing butters like cocoa, shea and murumuru have a self-preserving effect too, because they’re solid at room temperature, creating a difficult setting for bacteria to flourish in.
Thanks to the reduced water content, our self-preserving formulas have a richer texture and tend to feel more concentrated, so you’ll love them if you like more moisturizing products. In every other respect, the preserved and self-preserving formulas for Dream Cream and Mask of Magnaminty are exactly the same. Whether you choose to use preserved or self-preserving products is ultimately a matter of personal preference.
