I was never supposed to do journalism.

The spring of my sophomore year, I was sitting in my computer art class when my teacher asked for volunteers for the IHSA journalism competition in infographic design. I don’t knowwhy, but I raised my hand. That was the moment that changed my life.

My interest in journalism was practically non-existent. I had read a few hallway-chatters, but that was the extent of my Omega involvement at the time. Suddenly, I was on the team for the sectional round of the competition.

Through some miracle, I placed second in sectionals and moved onto state.

I didn’t place at state, but that’s not what’s important. What’s important was competing at the state competition allowed me to meet the wonderful staff of The Omega, who convinced me to join the paper for my junior year (needless to say, they succeeded).

I’m sure you’ve all heard of the butterfly effect, where a character goes back in time and accidentally kills a butterfly, changing the course of human history. Now, my butterfly may not be impactful on as durastic a scale, but it’s certainly impactful on a personal level.

Had I not raised my hand that fateful day in computer art, I never would have joined the Omega. All the amazing experiences I’ve had resulting from my time on The Omega never would have happened. I never would have traveled to Washington D.C, or skipped school to present at a journalism conference, or have found my passion in life. It’s so strange what could have been, and I’m so happy that what has happened,

happened.

So I urge you all to raise your hands.

If you go through life sticking to things you know for certain you’ll be good at, you will be totally hosed. It took me many, many tires to find something I was truly good at. All throughout middle school I played countless sports, and I never became more than a benchwarmer. I auditioned for theatrical productions, never getting more than a supporting role. Those experiences have been valuable in their own right, but I never excelled in those fields the same way I did in journalism, and I never would have known had I not raised my hand.

Take a chance on something completly new. Pay attention in a class where you typically doze off, or try out for a sport you’ve never heard of. The absolute worst that can come from it is having a new experience. But who knows, maybe you’ll stumble into your own newfound passion.

where my character passed away in a car accident and left behind a Dungeons and Dragons module, where her sister got to know her like she hadn’t while she was alive. In the show, it was revealed that my character was a lesbian. She never told her family before she died. Tilly taught me how to be brave and to always speak my truth, because you never know if you’ll lose the chance to speak it.

My junior year started off with “The Dream of the Burning Boy.” I played Rachel, a girl grieving a brother who died in a freak accident. This role was my most emotionally straining, and I became depressed after the show ended, almost as if I had turned into my character. Rachel taught me that it is okay to be emotionally vulnerable.

The last show of junior year was my favorite: Shakespeare’s “Comedy of Errors.” I played Dromio of Syracuse, the comedic relief. He taught me how to show my silly side and the play taught

me the value of friendship as my bonds with my best friends grew closer while we worked on this show.

Senior year I played a nun named Sister Clarissa in “Over the Tavern.” She was an old, wise woman who had taught the father of the family and all of his children. She taught me to stick to my values while also being open to new ideas.

Lastly, I played Chelsea in ‘Neighborhood 3: Requisition of Doom” also known as just “N3RD.” Chelsea taught me the value of family. Family will risk anything for you and it takes time to recognize that while you grow up.

What theatre taught me the most about was the importance of having a community that loves and supports you.

I think that is what I’ll miss the most.

To DGN theater. You’ve taught me so many lessons, but now it’s time to go play the character that I’m meant to play: myself.

it the following Sunday. It was something that we both looked forward to, and one of the things that bonded us the most.

My 18th birthday just so happened to fall 3 days before the Endgame release.

That marked the end of Marvel’s Infinity Saga phase 1, 2 and 3 which included 22 movies spanning 11 years. A lot of the character’s stories ended in the movie, thus reinforcing the end of my childhood in both worlds i’ve grown up in.

As I’ve gotten older, my dad and I got into more arguments. And not to blame him because I am the most outspoken daughter, and we both need the final word. But just because we would fight

on a saturday night and wouldn’t speak for hours, we both know we would still see the newest MCU movie the next morning.

Next year my dad will be one call away, but I’ll be 8 hours. When I wake up the weekend after a MCU movie release, he won’t be there to see it with me. As much as we butt heads at times, I wouldn’t trade that bond with anyone else. So i’ll make sure to rent the movie to watch with him as soon as I get home.

Marvel, thanks for giving me unforgettable memories. And dad, thanks for making my childhood one filled with superheroes and wonder. I love you 3000.

Oftentimes, the goal of a play is to teach the audience a lesson. Not only does it teach the audience a lesson, but also the cast and crew.

In an Ariana Grande-esque way, I guess I could say that one character taught me love, one taught me patience, and one taught me pain. So here is my “Thank u, next.”

I first played a character named Katie who stood up to a bully. She taught me resilience and that an everyday person such as myself can be a hero.

For the past 11 years, I’ve grown up in two worlds. One being subjectively normal for a teenage girl, and the other being the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Ever since the first Iron Man came out when I was 8, my dad and I have seen every one in theatres multiple times. Whenever a new movie would come out, it was a tradition for us to see

A Laurie Halse-Anderson book was on my lap as I felt the heat of the mid-July Massachusetts sun on the side of my face. I could barely the move in the crammed rental van as my family traveled to Paul Revere’s house and the Old North Church in Boston.

This was not an unusual trip for my family, growing up we used any opportunity that we could to go to a museum or visit historic sites across the United States.

Beyond summer and weekend adventures, debating Presidential Candidates and history facts at the kitchen table were normal occurrences.

Without realizing it, my parents had instilled in me at young age a passion for history. Contained to small family trips and historical fiction books, it was a hidden secret that I kept to myself.

By the time I entered high school, history books were missing from my shelves and family vacations ended as we all got older and busier. My love for history was put aside for a more demanding schedule.

Uninterested, I was a passive student, going through the motions of school and activities.

Sophomore year, I was placed into AP United States History. Immediately, under the brilliant instruction of Amy Wlodek-Holland my passion for history was reignited.

I became obsessed with learning as much as I possibly could, signing up for as many history classes North offered. Two years later, and I have taken a total of eleven history classes during my high school career.

Teachers such as Louis Graham, Keith Lichtenberg, John Wander, and Wlodek- Holland allowed me to see that I was capable of doing so much more than I was as a student.

I went from being a passive student, afraid to speak to critically analyzing historical and political issues and leading discussions in government club field trips.

If you asked my friends or classmates to describe me, the answer is the same—along the lines of passionate and obsessed about history.

My beloved diversion became the defining feature of who I was.

Matt Troher:

You are probably reading this drinking a cup of coffee, and for your sake I hope it’s from the gas station. I will miss your jokes almost as much as you miss your spleen. Hopefully I’ll see it in a museum one day. But if not, I hope I see you win a journalism honor of some sort. Have fun at U of I next fall, and always remember that sometimes Moises computer just cannot connect to internet.

Thank you for always writing 800 word stories without being asked.

Other than you being unexpectedly asked to prom by a staff member, we hope you had a great year. I hope you end up finding out if Dave Edward’s old teammate is single, and if so let us (Sarah) know.

You know more about international politics than you do indesign, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. We hope you enjoy a lot of Wendy’s spicy chicken nuggets this summer and wish you luck at the College of Dreams.

Although you were almost kicked out of class halfway through the year, you exceeded our expectations (and you shaved your head). Although we never did an Omega deal or no deal, we hope you will find a way to do a Military one.

You are truly the meanest person on staff. We can’t even count the amount of social studies classes you have taken here, and frankly we do not want to.
