Meet the Más fr eelancers Hello Más readers! I love music and the artists who create the soundtrack of my life. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you will find that Bakersfield is booming with Latino movers and shakers that make our city so great. For those of you who don’t know, I’m the leader of the local Latin-reggae band, Mento Buru. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of representing our local Latino community by performing in front of thousands of people. Music is a universal language and has the power to bring people of all cultures together. Now, writing for Más, I feel even more connected to this wonderful city. Having grown up in McFarland, I always give credit to my loving parents, Arturo and Soccorro, who instilled a sense of Mexican-American pride in me. They are two of the hardest-working people I know. Not only did they raise a large family (five girls, two boys), they also stayed active in the community by getting involved in local politics and church events. Even today you can find them striving to help people in their city. As a father of two beautiful children, Kaitlyn and Mark-Anthony, I want to continue to set the same example by being a positive role model for my kids through writing and music. I hope you enjoy my contributions to Más, as I do my best to highlight the members of our Latino community who are making a difference. Peace…

Good reading material It was interesting reading the article about George Lopez. He had a chaotic childhood, but it's good to know that he was able to succeed. It was interesting to read that while "performing at Bakersfield's Fox Theatre years ago,he brought the house down with a bilingual routine in which he preached ethnic peace and reconciliation in English, but in his Spanish-language ‘translation’ hurled dozens of insults at white people." It's a good thing that "white people" can take a joke without being offended. It helps prove that America is the most tolerant and open nation on earth. Sincerely, Joseph Graf Wasco
