‘Fitzy’

‘Johnny U’

‘Frankie’

A series of illustrations / portraits inspired by the Creative Suite tutorial, given by Ste in which we used a similar methodology to create a portrait of Marilyn Monroe.

Fitzy - aka John Fitzgerald Kennedy was elected to the office of President of the United states in 1961 and was assassinated in 1963 in Dallas. He represents politics.

Together, Mazza, Fitzy, Johnny U, and Frankie, represent film, politics, sports and music, and cover all the different areas of American Celebrity during the 1960’s.

Given Marilyn’s celebrity status during the 1960’s, I chose 3 other celebrities from the same time period, representing different spheres of the public realm. The titles of each of the pieces reflect the similar name Ste gave to his Marilyn portrait of ‘Mazza’.

Johnny U - aka Johnny Unitas was the Baltimore Colts Quarterback and one of the most decorated American Football players during the 1960’s. He represents sports.

I really like the way Sinatra has come out but I struggled getting a realistic likeness and adding depth to the likes of Unitas’ and JFK’s face but I feel that the base photo for JFK may have had something to do with this.

WHAT I DID THIS SUMMER Baltimore Ravens Schedule Wallpaper

June 11 Adobe Photoshop

The Baltimore Ravens are my favourite NFL team and I thought I’d make a desktop wallpaper for myself in order to keep track of results and fixtures for the upcoming season, as well as key dates such as the dates for the playoff games.

Once the background was sorted I added all the text. Using a white text with a black stroke to aid with legibility, making sure that the score was in bold so that it was easiest to reference.

After the text was sorted I added all the logos for all the I made this by filling in the teams, keeping the Ravens background with a dark grey logo full colour because its background, then covering the most important. The others this with a black smoke effect were adapted into a one using a couple of different colour version. This is done smoke effect brushes I have by taking a full colour version downloaded from the internet. and selecting the areas of

Ravens & Leeds United Schedule Wallpaper

June 19 Adobe Photoshop

This followed a roughly similar process as the Ravens wallpaper but started differently because the white smoke effect would have been too strong for the white text and didn’t work as well with the Leeds branding. I think the smoke effect works better with darker colours. Instead I placed the logos of the corresponding team on a plain field of their respective organisations primary colour, in this case purple for Baltimore and white for Leeds.

I then placed another layer of the primary colour on top but changed the blending mode to screen to soften the backgrounds and make the text easier to read. For the Leeds half I used an off white colour and a different blending option to darken the white background. Using half for the Ravens and half for Leeds to give a better balance. I then added the text. I used two different layouts, because Baltimore have at most less than half the number of

fixtures Leeds do there was more space per each fixture allowing for a bigger point size and more lines per fixture. Having the same layout style for Leeds would have flowed over the page or needed to have a reduction in point size to the extent it would have been illegible. I then added the mono-logos, the Ravens side had enough space to match them to the fixture. I then fiddled with the spacing to give the best look.

logo that need to be deleted, usually the background colours, and other sections that are unnecessary leaving the identifying shapes and features like the outline, any text and unique features such as the spots on the Jacksonville Jaguars logo, or the word Steelers on Pittsburgh’s logo. I then adjusted the spacing of each of the elements to look good, and added a purple bit at the top where the ravens logo is to fit the team identity.

JULY

Welcome to MLS July 8 Adobe Photoshop

The start of July saw many eyes turn to the United States as three of the biggest names of European football over the last decade headed west for a new challenge. Given the rise in interest in MLS due to the new signings for LA Galaxy and New York City FC, I though Id make a banner to give people more information about how to watch how the débuts of Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Andrea Pirlo. I started by finding an American flag, adding some smoke effects over the top to soften it, added the players on top going from left to right in order of their expected débuts. I subtly added the badges behind the players and reduced the opacity, to help associate the players with their new clubs, because you cant really see the shirts because of the text I placed on top. This information is coloured up to match the clubs branding.

American LUFC

Read between...

Inspired by the logo for New York City FCs logo, I though I’d give Leeds United an American style disc logo.

This is a bit of graphic optical art based around creating letter forms by using a change in direction or a void between the lines.

Its created by overlapping multiple circles of different colours and sizes leaving different sized gaps to create a thinner or thicker ring. I then added the text in the centre, which consists of the initial letters of Leeds and United (as NYCFCs logo has the NYC but not the FC). The american styling is characterised by the long, overlapping, intersecting parts of the letters.

It started by creating a background that was filled with diagonal lines that ran from bottom left to the top right corner.

July 12 Adobe Illustrator

After the centre was sorted I added the surrounding text in the main band. The text is in all caps to increase readability. I then added the dots either side to represent that United is the only professional football team in the city, following the mantra of one city, one club. It was finished in Photoshop for presentation.

July 14 Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop

I placed the word text in all caps, big, bold letters of the top, for a template of where the lines that would run the opposite way to create the letters of the word ‘read’. The lines in the word run from top left to bottom right but only over the top of the letters and join up with some of the lines underneath. Between the lines was added over the top in Photoshop by placing text on top, loading the selection and deleting this from the lines underneath.

WHAT I DID THIS SUMMER Blobs

July 15 Adobe Illustrator I made this following a tutorial I found on the internet. I started by creating a black background. The next step was to start creating the shapes. This is done by using the pen tool to create a smooth blob like shape, I also used the smooth tool to round off some of the rougher edges. The next step was to use the gradient mesh tool with 3 rows and 3 columns, then selected the inner four points with the direct selection tool and turn them to black. The next stage was to select a group of the outside points and turn them to a vibrant bold colour, and repeat this with other groups of points using different colours to make boldly coloured shapes. Once all the outside of the shape was coloured up, I changed the blending option to screen so that the black core would become transparent, allowing shapes to overlap and create new shades and hues. This process is then repeated with shapes of different sizes and shapes to cover the entire artboard and beyond the edges of it. The border was made by creating a box that was the same as the artboard and adding a thick white stroke to the inside, and changing the blending mode to screen. This would work well for an album cover or for a more abstract poster design

JULY

Liney thing

July 16 Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop This again was created following a tutorial from the internet. It starts with drawing a smooth wavy line, coping, reflecting along a vertical axis and then joining these two lines together. This creates the general outline of the shape, The next step is to create the lines that fill out the shape, this is done by going to the blend options menu, and then changing the spacing to specified steps and entering a number around 80 or 90. I then copied the shape into Photoshop. The next step was to duplicate this shape and rotate 90 degrees, and repeat until you had four overlapping shapes that roughly pointed to all four points of a compass. The background was created by filling the background with black then adding some big grey spots with a large soft brush. The grainy texture was added by adding a noise filter. The next step is to add colour to each of the shapes. Create a new layer above the desired shape, and pick a bright, bold colour, and with a large, soft edged brush add a dab so that it overlaps a decent chunk of the shape but not all of it. If you change the blending mode to dissolve, it gives a slightly more grainy texture. Then you select the outline of the shape by control/command clicking the shape layer thumbnail, then by pressing control/command, shift and I you can select the inverse. This should leave you with the selection of all the lines within the shape, you can now press delete and it will delete all the colour that is not on the lines. You repeat this with different colours, across the other shapes. Leaving a variety of shapes with colours that gradually fade out.
