As I have discovered over the last three amazing months, being Mayor of Worthing is not all about formality and posing in ceremonial chains.

Not only have I had some great opportunities to meet so many of you in our community, the feedback from our summer visitors has been fantastic.

The role of mayor is an exciting one with no two days the same.

For example I have been to the Worthing Lions’ Festival, the Birdman Weekend, the Rotary Carnival and the Men’s National Bowls Championships – four major events that put Worthing even more firmly on the map.

I went to the launch of Enterprise House on Ann Street – a great support unit for anyone either starting up or currently running a business.

There are lots of free services available and it is partly funded

by Worthing Borough Council.

It certainly hasn’t been difficult to live up to my aim of carrying on this historical role with a modern twist. I still believe that tradition is very important, but that it is also vital to get out into the community so that people get to know who is representing them. As well as supporting my four chosen charities – Oakgrove College, Acorn Pregnancy Counselling Centre, the Lauren Jones Centre and Worthing and Arun MIND – I am more than happy to lend support to others.

Not so long ago, I even had the opportunity to sit in the original Batmobile when Worthing Hospital launched its appeal for a new heart care facility at Food Restaurant.

Your theatres need you

A group who are standing up to save our unique theatrical heritage are calling on Worthing community to take centre stage.

They are urging people to go to their website and sign up as Friends, donating not just money, but skills and time to help their considerable efforts to Save Worthing Theatres – a campaign backed by Essentially Worthing Magazine. They are set up on Facebook and Twitter, and already have 100 or more friends, including us.

The campaign was sparked off by Jon Woodley when, as part of the major issues in modern times, funding became an issue for our four cultural venues, the Connaught, Ritz Digital, the Pavilion Theatre and the Assembly Hall.

He and a talented team of trustees are among those who have responded to Worthing Borough Council’s offer to make the theatres available for commercial tender.

There are five trustees, all of whom have excellent credentials

for being on board. RADA graduate Jon was born and bred in this area and works for a leading theatre consultancy. He is teamed with lawyer John Bunker who performs with the Worthing Musical Comedy Society, Helen Scott who is a business consultant as well as being vicechair of Northbrook College and a Director/Trustee of Worthing Community Partnership, Chris Coopey, Practice Director of a local accountants and Executive Committee member of Worthing and Adur Chamber of Commerce

Backing Worthing Theatres Trust bid Essentially Worthing has shown solidarity with Worthing Theatres Trust by signing up as a Friend. New publisher of the magazine, Jacquie Pond says: “I am backing the group’s bid all the way. The well-planned vision they are projecting has impressed me, especially as it takes into account the

educational side of the arts.

Their awareness of the need to link commercial viability with the wishes of the community bodes well for the future. The five trustees are bringing not only their considerable professional skills to the table, but it is obvious that the cause is close to their hearts as well.”

They intend to set up as a notfor-profit community trust which will be registered as a charity.

Outline details are already with Worthing Borough Council.

The next step is to put in a financial plan this month and a final presentation at the end of October, along with other shortlisted groups. A decision is expected in November.

The group is well on the way to raising £5,000 to set up a charity account, so it later becomes eligible for grants and lottery funding.

Trust members plan to set everything up in such a way that the council can have a say in the running of the venues so that the community will still have a voice. This echoes with their aim to make education, in an artistic sense, a key part of their operations.

They intend to promote arts history, drama skills linked with social development and even encourage the practical side like building and architecture.

Apprenticeships, lectures, workshops, school visits and adult classes are also on the cards. All sections of our community are going to be included, especially young would-be theatre goers who are sometimes considered to be the” lost generation” in today’s arts facilities. There is also the idea of developing potential as wedding and events venues.

Plans are afoot to give each theatre a distinct brand – for example, drama and theatre at the Connaught, variety and broader entertainment at the Pavilion and meetings, events, conferences and concerts at the Assembly Hall.

The story of theatres in Worthing is a rich one. Sir Alan Ayckbourn CBE appeared in several plays at the Connaught in the 1950s and has agreed to be a Patron of the Trust, along with the brilliant raconteur, actor and writer Michael Simkins and the stage actor Mark Wynter. Winston Churchill visited the theatre in 1956 to see his daughter Sarah perform in Terrence Rattigan’s play Variation on a Theme. Harold Pinter acted at the Connaught under the stage name of David Baron, taking residence in the town centre just a few yards from the theatre in Ambrose Place in the 1960s. Pinter’s first wife, actress Vivien Merchant, acted at the Connaught during this period. Giles Cooper worked with Pinter at the Connaught. Robin Maugham wrote several plays which he directed and premiered at the Connaught, including The Claimant (1962) and Winter in Ischia (1964). Actress Marina Sirtis, perhaps best known for her role in Star Trek: The Next Generation, began her career in rep at the Connaught in 1976 and lived in the town.

Actor Robert Blythe has also worked in repertory theatre at the Connaught. Recently, two talented individuals, Tony Award winning Director Tom Morris (Warhorse) and Salisbury Playhouse Chairman Helen Birchenough have joined the Trust as Associates, joining Brighton based theatre company Talking Scarlet who have joined us as Production Partners. Previous Connaught Managers and Directors Nick Young and Stephen Holroyd are also on board as Associates.

Essential Splash

It’s nice to lend Guild Care a hand Open Day Paul Williams has news of a brilliant project for kids

with your children, their friends and local community groups to have fun.

Karen and Jason Ward have been organising Worthing’s event since 2009. Their third annual event was held just a few weeks ago on Broadwater Green, and was a roaring success – with a water slide, fire engine, a graffiti wall, circus skill workshops, cheer leaders, street dancers and lots more.

There’s always a warm feeling that comes from doing something nice for others – and that’s just the feeling we have right now at Splash FM. Earlier this summer, we joined forces with the aviation parts company Saywell International, in order to launch a new initiative called Helping Hands. The idea is to support the local charities, groups and organisations which help give our kids the best start in life.

There could be a group in need of new equipment, funding to improve facilities – or maybe they want to facilitate a special project or group trip.

Our first wave of applications closed at the end of June – and we can now announce that the first organisation getting a helping hand is the Worthing Playday Association.

The brainchild of Play England, Playday has been running since 1987, and is held on the first Wednesday of every August. The event gives the play sector a chance to raise awareness about the importance of play in children’s lives – and, of course, it’s a perfect excuse to get together

goodwill of a huge number of people and companies to keep this event going.

Understandably though, help and funding can be hard to find, particularly in the current financial climate.

As a result, Helping Hands will contribute in the region of £1000 towards some of the higher costs of next year’s event, including the hiring of a large scale PA system – and the re-introduction of a climbing wall – a popular attraction in previous years, but sadly absent from the 2011 event because of the cost involved.

The Worthing Playday team work extremely hard to put on this major event, and both Splash FM and Saywell International are pleased to be able to assist in ensuring this fantastic event continues.

The giving doesn’t end there.

Helping Hands will be open for applications again very shortly.

Every year thousands of unwanted pets are dumped on rescue organisations, often because irresponsible owners didn’t have them neutered before sexual maturity. Our local cat charities’ volunteers spend their free time fundraising and ensuring the best possible care for hundreds of cats.

Choosing a new pet through them means you’re giving an unwanted cat a second chance, while getting help and support from the organisation. The cat will be fully vaccinated, neutered and microchipped, with any underlying health problems already treated by a vet. Golden Oldie schemes ensure older

cats can live out their days in a home environment – vet bills are covered so all you provide is love. An adult cat’s temperament and lifestyle are established so you can quickly tell if they’ll fit in with you.

Cats often tolerate other pets – even dogs – better than other cats.

Kittens can be good with children and other pets. Taking one at a young age – 7 or 8 weeks – can work well as they are still in their critical socialisation period for learning and development, but it’s worth remembering many have been fathered by feral tom cats so may inherit some of the tom cat’s personality traits. Even the cutest kitten can grow up to be independent, aloof and in some cases downright spikey.

By Jane Baxter, from the Riverford Farm Cook Book Serves 6 Put the flour, baking 3 corn cobs powder, polenta and sugar 125g plain flour or rice flour in a bowl.

Add the eggs 1 tsp baking powder and yolk and beat together.

2 tbsp polenta Gradually beat in the crème 1 tsp sugar fraîche and milk to a thick, 2 eggs smooth batter.

Heat half the 1 egg yolk butter in a pan until brown 2 tbsp crème fraîche and add it to the batter.

Add 125ml milk the chilli, onion, corn and 2 tbsp butter herbs and season well.

1 red chilli, finely chopped Heat the oil and the 1 /2 red onion, finely chopped remaining butter in a 1 tbsp chopped coriander frying pan until quite hot. and/or chives Drop tablespoonfuls of the 2 tsp olive oil mixture into the pan and sea salt and freshly fry over a medium heat for ground black pepper about 2 minutes on each side, until golden brown.

Peel the husks off the corn Serve immediately. They are cobs and cook them in boiling good topped with crispy water for about 10 minutes bacon or pancetta. until just tender. Drain well and cut off the kernels.

Zoom to the top of page one Claire Love at LWS Creative knows the best ways to get your website noticed When you’re searching for something on the web, do you ever look beyond the first page of results? Honestly? It’s ok, you’re not alone – barely anyone does. This isn’t great news if you have a website. So how can you ensure it appears on the first results page and – even better – at the top of the page?

There are two ways – search engine optimisation (SEO) and pay-per-click (PPC) advertising.

First you can take the natural SEO route. If you want your website to appear naturally on page one and high in the rankings, your site needs to be as search engine-friendly as possible. You can do this by having the keywords and phrases that define your business embedded in the text, page titles and links to, and from, your site. The search engines will score your site on content relevance and quality and rank it accordingly.

Or you can pay to be there.

With PPC advertising you choose the search terms by which you want to be found, and bid a maximum amount you’re prepared to pay if a potential customer clicks on your listing through to your site. In return, the search engines place the highest bidders in the shaded box at the top of a results page, and down the right hand side.

Both methods require keyword research to understand which words and terms your target audience uses when they’re searching for the type of product or service you offer. Once you’ve identified those you can start to incorporate into the content of your website – for natural SEO – and/or decide whether you want to pay to appear against them – PPC advertising.

It’s not difficult to get to grips with both natural SEO and PPC – and there’s plenty of material out there to help you. You could even consider taking a short course to give you a kick start. But if it’s not for you, or you simply don’t have time to spare, it can be best to turn to an expert.

A&E is the one-night stand of Medicine – more thrills, less drudgery.

I do feel very lucky to love my job. It is often very, very hard work, relentless and exhausting but also hugely satisfying.

In order to deliver a good emergency service, the department has to spend most of its time and resources treating emergency problems and not get bogged down and delayed by all the other stuff. I am not here to replace your GP, to give a second opinion on a chronic problem, or to take out teeth.

One of the most valuable lessons I ever learned as a medical student was on a ward round with a senior doctor.

She stopped us all at the foot of a patient’s bed and asked us just to look and pronounce the person in it ‘sick’ or ‘not sick’.

Tick the box. If you look too closely at a photograph you lose the impression of a whole and that’s important in medicine.

I have used this test, mostly subconsciously I think, ever since – and jolly useful it has proved.

The adrenaline rush of a wellrun trauma-call is hard to beat.

Making someone better who was doing their damnedest to

hand our patients over to an admitting team to take over and continue their care. We move on and get on with the next job. I love A&E for this, too. Interminable ward rounds and bleeps are not for me. Even less the GPs desk, a limited consultation time and no drugs or kit to play with.

The necessary, but unfortunate flip-side is the lack of continuity of care or feedback from our patients. Much of the time I am grateful for this, too, but it is nice to hear of a happy ending from time to time. To see a man leave hospital surrounded by loved ones is priceless when

It’s good to hear from other specialists that we got it right and did a good job. And best of all is the full recovery of a very sick child and a thank-you card with a hand-drawn smiley face. This is what makes it all worthwhile and why we keep doing it.
