From the Editor For families with children and long-suffering members of the teaching profession, September means only one thing – a return to the hallowed halls of learning for the start of a new academic year. The relief on the faces of the mums is self-evident, as they screech to a halt outside our schools to drop off their little darlings and zoom off to put some distance between them and the aforesaid hallowed halls.

The grim determination on the faces of the staff as they peruse their timetables (“Oh, no! Not 4C for media studies on a Friday afternoon AGAIN!”) is a sight for sore eyes. And what of the carefree enthusiasm of everyone under the age of, let’s say, twelve, as they bound into the playground laden with new sports kit and brand new mobile to show off to their mates? It’s worlds and aeons away from Shakespeare’s schoolboy “creeping like snail unwillingly to school.” Kids don’t creep unwillingly anywhere any more – because education is all so much fun they don’t actually realise they’re learning anything.

Having been a child myself, some centuries ago now – and in another life a teacher and a mother, I’m pretty well experienced in all of it, from every angle. And the one thing I do remember from my childhood about the first day of the September term was the weather. Having shivered in thin summer clothing for the last week of the holidays, we were bundled by our mums into itchy new winter uniform, as per School Rules. The weather immediately became blisteringly hot, gearing up for an Indian summer to top all others.

And those long afternoon lessons during the first week of term gave us an early example of the Greenhouse Effect.

Climate change was never mentioned, of course, but during the course of the Autumn term we certainly knew about it – well aware of how we’d be huddling round ineffectual classroom radiators come Christmas.

Forces Favourite A Club where the brave are never forgotten On September 15, members of Worthing Royal Air Forces Association will remember all the service men and women who have fought for their country and the thousands of civilians who served alongside them.

The annual church service takes place this year on Sunday September 12 at Christ the King, Grafton Road from 3pm with the Mayor, honoured guests and veterans.

On Thursday October 7 the Association will host the RAF Central Band Concert this year at the Pier Pavilion.

The Club is also open to nonservices members who can enjoy the facilities and raise funds to help veterans.

A smile in the afternoon Or why Rik Scott’s such a happy chappie

“We’d like to offer this position…” Those words are music to anyone’s ears, especially in these current difficult times. I’m not prone to spontaneous emotional outbursts but I almost felt the need to kiss the boss of Splash FM when he offered me the job of hosting the drive home.

Then, thankfully, I remembered we’re both married and there was a large table in the way!

As Anna B explained in her column last month, it’s all change at Splash FM following Dave Hunt’s decision to hang up his headphones. So, now that Nick Osborne is getting up halfway through the night to co-host Breakfast with the lovely Miss B, a gap appeared at 3pm.

So what are the qualifications when it comes to hosting an afternoon drive show rather than a breakfast show? Well I appear to be my family’s unofficial designated driver for a start. I don’t think there’s a stretch of the A27, A259 or A24 that I don’t know. Every pothole, safety camera or merging lane is etched on my brain. This is due in part to me being teetotal, a fact that immediately elevates me to everyone’s new best mate

show. Your body clock ticks like a smooth Rolex rather than a broken old Timex! There’s no dragging yourself out of bed when everyone else is asleep, and of course, at the other end of the day there’s no dragging yourself to bed when everyone else is beginning to enjoy their evening.

It costs around £12,000 to install solar cells on your roof, but new tariffs should give you a return of at least £25,000. So what’s the catch? There isn’t one. If the Government offered to pay you £1,000 a year for the next 25 years, in return for an up-front investment of £12,000, you’d snap it up in a second.

And that’s pretty much the deal on offer, after the Government finally revealed what it will pay those who install electricity generating solar panels – in and around their homes – through the new Feed-in Tariffs (FITs).

The Government has finally agreed to reward households and businesses installing electricity-generating measures with enough of a return to make it a serious financial investment, as well as an environmental one.

If you’ve got the money you can earn a 7%-10% tax-free return, an income that will rise in line

with inflation. You also get to do more than your fair share in reducing the UK’s carbon– emissions.

In the week the energy regulator, – Ofgem, warned the nation to expect 20% electricity price hikes by 2020, and warned future supplies were in jeopardy, investors in solar panels could come out on top.

You’ll have the added benefit of being a net provider of electricity, and largely insulated from future price hikes that could see household bills top £2,000 a year by 2020.

An unexpired lease term of less than 80 years on a residential flat is considered to be short and can affect saleability, says Julian Wilkins What’s more, an unexpired term of less than 70 years makes the flat unmortgageable with many mainstream lenders.

Faced with such problems many leaseholders approach their freeholders for lease extensions and, not knowing they can challenge the terms offered, agree to the freeholder’s offer.

However, leaseholders have rights under the 1993 Leasehold Reform, Housing & Urban Development Act which gives them the legal right to a statutory lease extension.

This gives leaseholders a 90 year extension to their existing unexpired term. It also includes the extinguishment of any further ground rent payments and the right to have the premium determined by the Leasehold Valuation

Tribunal, if this cannot be agreed.

Such terms are far better than those normally offered by agreement, which typically include an extension to a new term of only 99 years, with a high ground rent that increases regularly and an inflated premium. Before agreeing to the freeholder’s offered terms, leaseholders are advised to seek their own independent advice.

The fight or flight reflex kicks in even before you’re conscious of the hazard because these learned reflexes begin at birth.

Retained baby reflexes – those initial building blocks from which children learn to control muscle movement, and later the fine control needed to hold a pen and

use it fluently – can disrupt tasks such as reading and writing.

In the 1960s, babies who did not crawl were thought more likely to become dyslexic.

Nowadays babies sleep on their backs and have less “tummy time”, so don’t develop limb control as quickly as a generation ago, when most three month babies could prop themselves up on their elbows.

A behavioural optometrist, like Mrs Burns, can assess all aspects of the visual process, from reading letters on the chart, through eye movements and the way the eyes coordinate, to how the brain is interpreting this information.

A two-hour assessment is followed by strategies involving floor exercises, eye exercises and, maybe, therapeutic or tinted spectacles. This stimulates the whole visual system and its links with other senses and muscles controlling balance and movement.

By Jane Baxter, Riverford Field Kitchen, from the Riverford Farm Cook Book. Serves 6

3 corn cobs 125g plain flour 1 tsp baking powder 2 tbsp polenta 1 tsp sugar 2 eggs 1 egg yolk 2 tbsp crème fraîche 125ml milk

2 tbsp butter 1 red chilli, finely chopped 1/2 red onion, finely chopped 1 tbsp chopped coriander and/ or chives 2 tsp olive oil sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Peel the husks off the corn cobs, and cook in boiling water for about 10 minutes, until just tender. Drain well and cut off the kernels.

Put the flour, baking powder, polenta and sugar in a bowl.

Add the eggs and yolk and beat together. Gradually beat in the crème fraîche and milk until you get a thick, smooth batter.

Heat half the butter in a pan until brown and add it to the batter. Add the chilli, onion, corn and herbs and season well.

Heat the oil and the remaining butter in a frying pan until quite hot. Drop tablespoonfuls of the mixture into the pan and fry over a medium heat for about 2 minutes on each side, until golden brown. Serve immediately.

Anyone got an oily rag?

When it comes to railways, 83-year-old Peggy Weeks is right on track

She’s ridden a yak in Mongolia, climbed glaciers in New Zealand and followed the Inca Trail in Peru. And now, it’s full steam ahead for intrepid traveller Peggy Weeks as she searches for adventure much closer to home.

“I’ve always loved the railways,” confesses Peggy, who now lives in Steyning.

“It all started when I was six years old, sitting on a local embankment with my father.

He told me to listen, and I heard the most wonderful sound. Seconds later, the Flying Scotsman whooshed past – and from that moment, I was hooked.”

Many years later, when Peggy moved to Sussex as a young mum, she loved

taking her own children on the Bluebell Railway, and the magic and fascination of the Age of Steam has stayed with her throughout her life.

“I have a friend and colleague who regularly drives the engines on the Bluebell Line and he sometimes used to let me ride in the cab with him and take photos,” says Peggy.

“This was fantastic, of course – but then I had an idea about cleaning the carriages, and thought it would be fun to see if I could have a go.”

But when Peggy made enquiries, she was disappointed.

“They told me I was too short, and wouldn’t be able to reach the carriages,” she explains. “Then, just as I was about to give up the whole idea, someone suggested I could clean the engines instead. And that turned out to be loads better!”

At 7am before the engines were warmed up ready for the day ahead, Peggy was given her instructions. She had to use a bucket for mixing the cleaning material - oil and paraffin - and a pile of old rags for rubbing.

“The rags were surprisingly interesting,” recalls Peggy.

“I fished out an old bra once, and another time there was a corset. It didn’t matter what

we used – everything ended up covered in oil and so did we! I even found a navy boiler suit, which was brand new and fitted me perfectly.

So that’s what I wore to do the cleaning.”

Peggy’s oily job was lots of fun, but she yearned for an even more hands-on approach to the engines.

“I asked if I could drive the trains on the Watercress Line at Alresford near Winchester, and in April 2007 I managed an hourlong session with a diploma at the end of it,” she explains proudly. “They were really surprised that, at 80-odd I wanted to give it a go.”

In her heavy work boots, Peggy took to working in the cab like a duck to water. From shovelling coal to learning how to obey the signals, the whole experience was a delight – and a challenge.

“Shovelling coal is really tricky because the shovel you use is about twice as long as a normal one, and there’s a definite technique to it, which I just couldn’t grasp, however hard I tried.

In the end, I just threw in the coal by hand!”

She was just a tad worried about reversing, too.

“I told them I wasn’t very good at reversing a car, so I didn’t reckon I’d be able to manage a train,” she explains. “But the instructor just smiled and said: ‘Don’t worry, love – you’ve got the track to help you keep straight.’ I wish I’d thought of that!”

Peggy enjoyed her railway experience so much she wrote a poem about it. With her kind permission, here it is.

Dentistry has changed recently to allow registration of the different dental care professionals. Originally, dentists were the only people

you could see to have your new dentures made. But now you can visit a specialist called a Clinical Dental Technician – a comparatively new member of the dental team.

My Clinical Dental Technician has given me a number of options.

How do I choose the best?

It’s often useful to take a look at the guarantees offered.

As a rule of thumb, the more guarantees, the better the product.

I have partial dentures made of plastic, which break annoyingly often and feel loose in my mouth.

Is there a better alternative?

Certainly. Try metal ones, which will clip into place easily and hold fast. These are usually made in a horseshoe shape, which clears the palate and makes eating a lot more fun.

What’s the best way to keep my dentures in tip top condition?

Soak them for no more than ten minutes and brush with an ordinary nail brush—it’s much easier to grip than a toothbrush and does a more efficient job.

I have a full upper denture with a metal palate. Although I was originally advised that this would be a good choice, I’m regretting it, because my dentures have never fitted properly. Why was I advised to have this kind?

Every professional has his own view. I’d say that although this type of denture is stronger, it’s just not flexible enough, so you’ll never get a snug fit.

For strength and flexibility I’d suggest inserting a metal veneer into an acrylic denture.

It’s much more comfortable than a full metal palate.

Anger management Security at A&E is a serious issue, says Dr Sarah Honess

A familiar name appeared on the computer screen of people waiting in A&E, and an involuntary sigh escaped my lips unchecked. More attendances than years of life is always a Bad Sign. The man suffered from mental health problems, exacerbated by alcohol dependence and was, as on countless previous occasions, intoxicated, depressed and threatening self-harm. He was led into a room for assessment by one of the nurses. Moments later, a commotion erupted and the nurse flew out. It emerged he had produced a knife and threatened to use it.

Coincidentally, half a dozen of Sussex Police’s finest officers had just arrived by another entrance on unrelated business and our man was quickly and safely disarmed in a flurry of batons and pepper spray. This incident was resolved without injury, thanks to the police presence – but highlights how very vulnerable staff can be.

Happily, in Worthing there are far less frequent serious security issues than those often encountered regularly in larger conurbations. Reception staff here do not sit behind a bullet-proof glass screen and talk through an intercom. Our waiting room is not crawling with security guards. But events like this inevitably raise questions.

The job we do exposes us to danger, and I guess we become a little desensitised. Our client group often includes alcohol and drug users, the mentally

ill, the medically sick and the head-injured, not to mention all those who are simply afraid, in pain, tired, hungry and fed up with waiting. Walk into the middle of all that in uniform and you are bound to encounter some animosity from time to time.

I am not naturally of a sensitive disposition and was brought up in a tough South London teaching hospital.

I tolerate language at work, in uniform and insults to the morals of my sister and mother that I would not when in ‘civvies’ because I know it is contextual and mostly not personal. I do wonder, though, whether we have become too blasé to the potential risks we run and whether security should have a higher priority. After all, the doors are open 24 hours a day to all comers, the staff are predominantly female and

we have a plentiful supply of highly desirable drugs. Should healthcare professionals receive mandatory training on dealing with violence and aggression?

But it must also be said, despite all the many discomforts and inconveniences involved in a trip to A&E, most people remain pleasant and polite and, on occasion, even charming. A kind word on a gruelling shift goes a long way.

At the sharp end, this makes a huge difference and goes some way towards restoring our faith in human nature and reminding us why we do the job at all. After all, we could instead be quietly stacking shelves somewhere, listening to music on an ipod!
