From the Editor How “aitch-ay-pee-pee-why” do you feel today? In these grim days of VAT increases, government spending cuts and unpredictable weather, happiness seems an elusive commodity – and there’s been a great deal of media advice recently on how to cheer up and locate that inner sense of joy which must be lurking somewhere, if only we knew where or how. It’s not easy. I’m not really a fan of the Random Laughter technique – suddenly bursting into a fit of the ho-ho-hos, three times a day and for no apparent reason. It may get your diaphragm and inter-costal muscles working (so far, so good) but try it when you’re on your own in a public place, and you could get some very strange looks from passers by. Let’s avoid this route to a padded cell, and think of something more sensible. As happiness techniques go, I rather like the sound of aiming to do three different acts of kindness every day. It’s a tall order for some, especially as these kindnesses should contain absolutely no ulterior motive. So, popping over to Great Auntie

Batter by far It’s Pancake Day on Tuesday March 8. If you’re a fan of this tempting dish, you’ll already have your favourite topping sorted out well in advance. (We love the traditional lemon and sugar – but each to his own!)
Here’s our recipe for the perfect pancake batter. Sift 100g plain flour with a pinch of salt into a bowl. Make a well in the centre and break in an egg. Stir together 300ml milk and water. Add 2 tbsp of liquid to the flour, mix until combined, then beat well. Add the rest of the liquid a little at a time, and beat gently until the batter is smooth. This will make about 4 thin pancakes. Pour just a little at a time into a hot oiled frying pan, and fry gently on both sides until golden. Toss if you’re feeling brave!

Purple Sprouting Broccoli with Mustard and Tarragon Hollandaise by Jane Baxter, from the Riverford Farm Cook Book Serves 4 400g purple sprouting broccoli, trimmed 250g unsalted butter 3 egg yolks juice of 1 lemon a pinch of cayenne pepper 2 tsp wholegrain mustard 1 tsp chopped tarragon 1 tsp chopped chives salt and freshly ground black pepper To make the sauce, melt the butter slowly in a pan, then remove from the heat. Put the egg yolks, lemon juice and cayenne in a bowl set over a pan of simmering water, making sure the water doesn’t touch the base of the bowl. Using a balloon whisk, whisk until slightly thickened, then whisk in the melted butter a little at a time until it has all been incorporated. The sauce should be thick and glossy. Stir in the mustard and herbs and season with salt and pepper. The sauce will keep in a warm place for about an hour.
Cook the purple sprouting broccoli in a large pan of boiling salted water until just tender. Drain and refresh in cold water, then dry well. Heat on a ridged grill pan (or a barbecue) until very hot, then place the broccoli on it. Cook, turning occasionally, until slightly charred. Arrange on a serving dish and drizzle over the hollandaise sauce. If you’re serving Mothers Day lunch at home, try this as a fabulous starter.

Playing naturally Worthing’s children know what they want, as Wendy Greene discovered We all know that grown-ups know best, don’t we? Well no, actually, in some cases it seems they don’t. One of Worthing’s latest and greatest success stories resulted from extensive input from local schoolchildren. If you’ve walked or driven along West Worthing seafront, you can’t have missed the Waterwise Play Area – so called because it is next to the Waterwise Garden on the beach. The unique project was made possible following a successful National Lottery play strategy bid by Worthing Borough Council. Several sites were considered and the job of construction put out to tender. The three best tendered designs were taken into local schools and pupils were given the chance to study them and decide which suited their needs and likes. Says William Boyd, Parks and Foreshore Support Manager, “We had our own views on what would be selected, but the children chose exactly the opposite.” There were over 500 responses from children and the winners, Jupiter Play, were by far the most popular. Soon the ground was cleared and levelled and work began to construct an eco-friendly

playground with good disabled access. It was decided that timber would be better than metal, and that colours should be muted to fit in with the surrounding area. Robinia wood from heritage managed forests was chosen for its strength and natural fire resistance. Engineers project managed the work and you can’t help thinking that those who had to give the equipment a thorough testing might have enjoyed it rather more than they would admit. The playground was officially opened by The Mayor and the fences adorned with posters and poems from the children of Durrington First and Middle School. Being next to the delightful Waterwise Garden means parents and grandparents can enjoy another eco-friendly facility while the children play. The café at nearby Marine Gardens is a great place to calm down after all that excitement and there’s a plan for the Landtrain to run from The Pier to the area, making it even more fun. Councillor Major Tom Wye, who was heavily involved in the project, says, “I am delighted with the success of the playground. I knew it would be

popular but this is much more than we expected. People come from miles around.” Tom points out that the quality of play is particularly good. His own grandchildren’s reaction was “wow!” As Parks Manager Clive Bramble says, “Since the opening we have all been blown away by the play area’s
success and seen massive use by the local children. Which goes to show – ask the children and you can’t go far wrong.”

Do you have Blogger’s Block? It’s all a matter of planning, says Claire Love at Local Web Solutions/ LWS Creative Everyone’s talking about Social Media. It’s becoming more and more popular in business circles, as small businesses are Tweeting and blogging, businesses are growing their numbers of fans on Facebook, and LinkedIn is becoming a tool of choice for online networking. But the road to success is littered with abandoned blogs and stale Twitter feeds. Just like New Year resolutions, social media projects are very easy to start, but much, much tougher to sustain. So, how can we make it work for us? The key to success, as always, is planning. Take blogs, for example. It’s very easy to use up all your great blog ideas in the first few days or weeks. “Blogger’s Block” – a term which I may have just invented – will cut in very quickly unless you plan a campaign. The key to blogging success (and, tweeting or Facebook updating, to a lesser extent) is to find a niche or topic you want to talk about.
Then establish a ‘voice’ or tone for your blogs and plan your topics well in advance. An accountant, for example, could plan to blog around scheduled events such as Budgets or tax deadlines. A retailer could plan blogs as new, seasonal stock arrives or when a new campaign starts. Of course, spontaneous, unplanned blogs or tweets are great, but it’s also an excellent idea to plan your blogs or updates in advance and spread them out over the year. Blogger’s block? No chance! Singing to make you feel good Stonewater Arts Singers love to sing. Some of them read music, others don’t. Their tastes in music vary, but that’s fine because the repertoire is extremely broad. As founder Becky Rocheleau says, “Singing is for everyone – we look upon it as a form of selfexpression. Being in a choir gives a sense of belonging and can be therapeutic.” Becky started her musical career in West End shows like Miss Saigon, so having moved south and started a family, she needed to start singing again. Just over two years ago, she joined forces with Dominique Levack and some friends, meeting at the River of Life Church in Broadwater Road from 7.30-9.30pm every Wednesday. Swanning along We’re delighted to hear some good news about the swan which had to be rescued after being shot last month. Thanks to Worthing and District Animal Rescue Service (WADARS) and the RSPCA, he has now fully recovered and been released back to the River Arun. In fact, he paddled out to join his friends near the Look and Sea Centre quite unaware of his audience.
WADARS Animal Collection Officer David Gambriel said, “It is always a wonderful moment when you release a bird back into the environment knowing you helped in its recovery. This was a particularly nasty injury inflicted by someone with an air rifle. We would like to repeat the warning that anyone found deliberately injuring swans could face a fine of up to £5,000 or six months’ imprisonment. WADARS are offering a reward of £500 to anyone who has information which will lead to a conviction and help us catch the person who did this.” Anyone who has any information should call their local police station or contact WADARS on 01903 217788

Okay, sometimes it can be the most bizarre source of information or entertainment imaginable, but every now and then it can blow your mind. Just the other day I came across a piece of information online that was so bizarre, it just couldn’t be true – could it? It arrived via an email titled “Stuff Everyone Should Know” (now that’s an email I’m going to read) and there, in amongst a whole load of rubbish, was the subject line “Never Get Locked Out of Your Car Again”. The article went on to explain that should you ever be unfortunate enough to lock your keys in your car, or lose them, then as long as you have a spare remote with keyless entry and a mobile phone you are – well – laughing. If you lock your keys in the
car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their mobile phone from your mobile phone. Hold your mobile phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button on the spare keys, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. And, hey presto, your car will unlock! Now, I’m sure, that like me when I first read this, you are thinking “What a load of poppycock!” However, isn’t there just enough of a semblance of possibility in that idea that’s got you wondering? Dr Sarah has the last word… What images come to mind when you think of A&E? Rowdy drunks, broken bones, car crashes, heart attacks and long waits in draughty waiting rooms? Yes, there’s a lot of the above – and there’s plenty of GP stuff too. Snuffles, coughs and colds and toothache – they’re all part of the bread and butter of A&E. It’s mostly a pleasure, a thrill even – I’m never happier than up to my elbows in claret – and sometimes it’s a drudge, a positive chore but it passes the time and pays the bills. Every once in a while though, and mercifully relatively infrequently, there unfolds a tragedy so complete that it leaves us all stunned and reeling, wondering how we

Of course death is no stranger to hospitals. Breaking bad news to distraught relatives is part of my role. I hope I do this with sympathy, compassion and sensitivity. I don’t really share their grief, I am doing my job. No one wants to see a weeping doctor. When a child dies, it is something else altogether. No communication skills workshop at Medical School will ever prepare you to speak to the parents of a dead child. . Resuscitation is a routine procedure, you go into autopilot and get on with it. There’s a lot to do, a lot to think about and a lot of people to coordinate. While you are busy doing, thinking and coordinating you are a machine.
As soon as you stop, you are just a mother staring at someone else’s dead child, trying to wake from what must surely be a nightmare. Mostly, we deal with death and carry on. On to the next kebab-coated drunk scraped out of the gutter or a threeweek-old sprained ankle. But child death rocks the whole team, from the paramedics to the receptionist. I would like to pay tribute here to the amazing people I work with, without whom I would almost certainly be rocking gently to and fro in a secure institution. They keep me sane. Well, sort of. So as I drive home sobbing in the aftermath of an emotional Armageddon, I am exhausted and burnt out. All I want to do is hold my own sweet children, still warm
and tousled-headed from sleep and inwardly swear never to shout at them again. What this ultimately does is to reset my priority clocks about what really, really matters. It helps to put the world back into perspective. Feeling so keenly such raw extreme emotion makes you very aware of how precious life is. It strips away all the clutter and pares life down to the essentials. So next time you attend with anything other than an Accident or an Emergency and find us less than enthralled by your story – forgive us. We might just have been to hell and back. Dr Sarah trained in Medicine at King’s College, London, and now works in the Emergency Department at Worthing Hospital.
