Skovshoved Sea Lab

Skovshoved Sea Lab rises from the sea water as a continuation of the stone riprap sea wall that was placed on the site during the marina’s construction in the 1930s. The form of RIPRAP eases the transition from the organically shaped stone face of the city to the traditional cottages inland, blending straight lines with sweeping expressions. Inspired by the curious relationship between granite boulders, the building interlocks spaces at different elevations, while constantly drawing sitelines back down to the water. Transparency allows for panoramic views, as well as windows into neighboring functions of the building. At night the building formation glows as a beacon of Skovshoved Marina and its unwavering warmth towards the water.

Design Principles

Un-interrupted Spatial Journey

An uninterrupted and easily navigable pathway helps to visually connect the varying programming throughout the building, while inviting people to explore deeper within

Compression & Release

Providing compression and decompression throughout the building to create a stimulating and memorable physical experience

Layering Programming

Connecting unconventional ming pairs visually, ration through hierarchy

As well, constantly helping ocean

Sea Farming and Programming Research

As a studio, we actively searched to understand the components of this unprecedented project. The most impactful experience I had while researching ocean oriented projects was actually holding locally farmed mussels in my hands at Havhøst, a grass-roots urban ocean farming initiative in Copenhagen. I decided that the space I created could be used to educate average people, like myself, on the ecological benefits of sea life. By using transparency to blend programming, such as a sea material library visibly accessible to a public cafe, I sought to introduce residents of Skovshoved to their sea-bound neighbors.

Programming

unconventional programbut allowing sepahierarchy in elevation. helping to frame the below.

Spatial Hierarchy

Building form and ceiling height reflect the expected occupancy and social importance of each space.

Visual Connectivity

Allowing surveillance across programming and activities by implementing transparent and translucent materials, such as channeled glass

Skovshoved Site Condition Gradient

Studying the area of Skovshoved in person, I found there to be a stark contrast between the waterside marina and the historic fishing village, now deeply separated by a highspeed road. The Sea Lab becomes the centerpiece between the two: A translation of form from land to sea, and the culmination of life between.

The goal of the Baker Wetlands Bird Hide is to provide shelter and screen for bird watchers, effectively hiding their gaze from the local birds. The form of the Bird Hide is inspired by the idea of low-lying clouds rolling over the wetlands. Sprinkling water as they pass, the clouds begin the natural cycle that allows for such a high variety of life to thrive in these Kansas wetlands. Theoretically constructed almost entirely from 2x4 and 4x4 dimensional lumber scraps, the Baker Wetland Bird Hide efficiently breathes new life into what would otherwise lay waste, while connecting Lawrence locals to the species that help sustain them.

The goal of the Museum of Western Taboos is to explore the various taboo subjects, behaviors, and beliefs that have been present in America by comparing those of the Western Frontier to those of Today. This includes topics such as sexuality, race, and death ,among others. By displaying cultural objects that relate to taboo topics in America, as well as allowing visitors to learn about and engage with these taboos in a safe and respectful environment, the Museum of Western Taboos offers insights into some of the most complex and sensitive aspects of American culture.

Perry Lake Yacht Club

The Perry Lake Yacht Club Clubhouse combines the programming necessary for an extremely wide range of seasonal activities into one flexible space. Activities hosted by members include things like summer boat races, community building events, fundraising galas, or holiday parties. The front and back of house programming are boldly differentiated by form, however interlock to ease flow between the two, allowing for alternate uses when necessary. Beneath the wavy roof that represents the wake of a sailboat, the main event space boasts panoramic views of Perry Lake, constantly connecting club members to the water at the center of their community.

La Pinna Harbor Bath

La Pinna Harbor Bath draws inspiration from the naturally playful motion of Copenhagen’s harbor while responding to the historical maritime language of the area. The wood structure’s form comes as a response to the geometry of the pre-existing, steel boat mooring arms along the harbor’s edge. The goal of the building is to activate the underappreciated waterfront by creating a destination, framing nearby landmarks and acting as a smooth transition to the water level. Similar to the motion of a rock skipping across water, La Pinna Harbor Bath erects directly from the ground and into the ultimate lookout/ diving spot above a protected swimming zone.
