The Cobra Performing Arts Center is an organic shape that flows with nature, quite like the art of dance and music. The free-flowing shape was derived by a set of goals that were informed by the site context. One goal of the site was to use the eminent southwest summer breeze to create a passive ventilation through the building. We wanted to create a secondary street to rid of the MBTA island condition while also decongesting the primary intersection. We wanted to connect the user to the building by proposing a primary means of circulation throughout the building with activated areas along the path quite like a highline condition

HOST WALL DETAILS The host wall on the east facade of the project facing the dense urban fabric acts as the main artery and heart of the building for all of the mechanical equipment. The wall is thickened to 2 feet wide in order to allow for all of the components to fit withing its envelope. This is the more rigid wall that allows the mechanical, HVAC, and electrical conduits to pass up through the building. The rigid wall allows all of the cellular spaces in the plan to back up against and create some order in the free-flowing plan.

GUATEMALA OBSERVATORY

Guatemala City, Guatemala Atop one of Guatemala City’s largest surrounding mountains, the site is ideal for an astrological observatory.

Moving along an axial pathway with multiple different viewpoints the user will arrive at the stalagtite form of the observatory that seems as though it is a rock outcropping that has formed at the top of the mountain. Each of the angles that are cut into this concrete form have a different site meaning and allow for different views and lighting conditions.

Boston, MA Massachusetts Avenue is one of the central, most populated streets in the Boston area. The path seems to be a linear axis that cuts through the center of Boston to Cambridge.

However, Massachusetts Avenue is a much more traverse, perpendicular 43% street upon further study. The street has ancor points as off shoots to the central axis that tend to draw people off of the axis and back to it. GATEWAY APARTMENTS

Boston, MA Dense urban housing generally consists of a double loaded core with small, efficient apartment types. By creating a double height “L” shaped apartment type it is easy to break the monotony and simple housing blocks. WIth the use of a double height program, the density of the block is broken up without losing efficiency with the advantage of a skip stop elevatior. The “L” shape prototype is then roatated and flipped to create a “tetris” type housing block that allows for different apartment types and breaks the monotony or stacked floors.

BROADWAY BRANCH LIBRARY

South Boston, MA The mass construction of South Boston is lending way for an influx of the working class community into the area.

This provides a neccesity for communal buildings within the area. The community gives the opportunity for the addition of a new library as a branch to the Boston Public Library. The 40,000 square foot library is located on a major intersection abutting the MBTA station.

Air rights over the MBTA station were given, however there was a 5 foot setback from the edge of the MBTA station. The Library includes a moveable louvered facade in order to allow for a protective screen that invites the correct lighting for reading. Additionally, the library allows multiple different narratives when visiting, and is designed for the simplicity of the user to inhabit the space as needed

URBAN NODAL STITCH

Boston, MA The growth of a post industrial site, that is disconnected from the city lends way for an interesting and necessary urban intervention. The growth of Assembly Square’s commercial and retail areas allows for the addition of 2 million square feet of mixed use construction. However, the site is disconnected from Boston and adjacent neighborhoods by a large highway. It is necessary to create various different interventions in order to bring people to the site and allow for easy transportation to ARLINGTON downton Boston. Therefore, this calls for a sort of “urban, nodal stitching.”

NEUKOLLN APARTMENTS

Berlin, DE A small slender site on the corner of an intersection with two party walls provides a difficult task when designing luxury apartments.

With the use of splitting and flipping the apartments it allows for an apartment that benefits from multiple views, and programmatic equality. Each apartment will also have a corner living space while also benefiting from the small amount of southern exposure.
