Hi, my name is Matthew.

I am currently studying an architecture bachelor’s degree in Queen’s University Belfast and will graduate in June.

I feel that good spatial designs should have a high level of respect towards local culture and history. And I believe that this should be reflected in the materiality, the concept and the interaction between the users and the space.

THE BELFAST STUDENT UNION OF BROADCASTING Best Project in Third Year, 1st Semester Location: Belfast, Northern Ireland

The Belfast Student Union of Broadcasting aims to provide a space for students to make intellectual ideas and deliver them through old and new media.

The concept of stoa and agora spaces allow students to make ideas based on their own knowledge. The tower is a symbol of the Telegraph Building, whiich delivers ideas throughout the whole Northern Ireland everyday.

Spatial Arrangements In the design, the free-formed floorplates allow users to hear and get inspired by discussions happening on every level. This also simulates an ‘agora’ (a public square) in a covered area.

The ‘stoa’ rooms are clinging onto the facades to maximise sunlight. Except for the debate rooms on the ground floor, they block signals and support raw discussions held by students.

THE ARCHITECTURE SCHOOL OF PROXIMAL DEVELOPMENT Second Year Design Award Project 2021 Location: Newry, Northern Ireland

The architecture school is designed based on the learning theory of proximal development by Le Vygotsky. He suggested that humans learn effectively in a collaborative environment where tutors and students work together. This provides a zone that allows the largest extent of understanding of a subject or a skill.

The aim of project is to demolish and rebuild the school in an inland area after 100 years. The site will be flooded by the sea level rise in around 2120.

Original Building The building is designed to be demolished after its use in 100 years time.

So it aims to be dissembled and keep the materials in the best condition.

Remove Facade The second step is to remove the walls and facade from the structure.

Screws are also demolished and replaced by new ones for future use.

The walls, insulation and materials will be delivered to inland areas for reconstruction.

Recycle Concrete Structural Base Only the concrete structure in the ground floor will be left in the original site, waiting for recycling and will turn into concrete aggregates for future uses.
