About My name is Matthew King I’m a graphic designer with over 5 years of experience ranging from roles at agencies, in house teams and now as a full-time freelancer.

I independently run my own freelance design business and work with clients based across the UK, Europe & USA. I deliver high quality design services in brand creation, print & digital media and regularly attend networking events to build meaningful relationships with businesses, startups and freelancers.

This lookbook showcases a selection of my design work featuring projects that I’ve worked on during my time in the industry.

01 Vapouround Magazine Brand identity, print & digital design

Vapouround Magazine was founded in 2015 and has proudly grown into the e-liquid industries leading publication.

Their goal is to promote a safer alternative to smoking and encourage people to quit the habit with insightful knowledge from industry professionals and scientific research.

Since its founding Vapouround has formed it’s own awards evening, opened two Vapouround Lounge stores and there’s also Vapouround Juice, which has two unique tasting flavours of e-liquid.

The flagship of the Vapouround brand is the magazine. I was involved with the team and the project from its inception and was responsible in creating a brand identity along with the production VA P O U R O U N D M AG A ZI N E

of the magazine on a bi-monthly basis.

As the magazine’s success grew it diversified into new branches.

I created designs for posters, business cards, roller banners, programmes, leaflets and websites for the Vapouround Lounge, Vapouround Premium E-liquid and the Vapouround Awards.

02 Derby County Football Club Print & digital design

During the 2013-2014 season, I worked internally with Derby County Football Club on marketing campaigns, producing graphics that were used across club merchandise, the club website and in print.

I created advertising campaigns that went on to feature around the football stadium and the surrounding area of the ground. Print design and digital graphics that were produced included billboard advertisements, eshots, web banners, posters, publication adverts and leaflets.

03 Logofolio Brand identity A strong brand identity is a key asset to any business.

Over the years I have worked with businesses ranging from startups to established companies to create brand identities for their companies.

04 Aspire Barbershop Brand identity

Based in Sandiacre, Nottingham, Aspire Men’s Barbershop commissioned me to design a fresh brand identity for their new business. The barbers had no previous brand before I worked with them so I was challenged with creating this identity from scratch.

The brief outlined that the brand must encapsulate the business’ positive outlook on life. In response, I designed a simple, sharp & upbeat brand identity delivered in a variety of file formats so they could use their logo on social media and across their marketing materials.

Logo construction - the upwards pointing ‘A’ logomark symbolises the brand’s positive approach to life. I combined the logomark with a modern typeface for ‘Aspire Barbershop’ to give the logo a youthful tone of voice.

05 Naked Fish / Mello Buddha Print design & social media graphics

Naked Fish & Mello Buddha are successful e-liquid brands founded in the USA. Keen to promote their e-liquid to the European market, they commissioned the company I worked at to manage all their marketing and promotional materials to feature across the UK and Europe.

I produced creative designs for their social media accounts, exhibition graphics, roller banners, business cards, leaflets and product brochures. Working with these brands gave me an insight into developing an existing brands visual identity and pushing it further.

06 Erewash Borough Council Print & digital design

I worked with Erewash Borough Council to assist with the production of their day to day graphical duties. This involved designing print & digital graphics for community events, offers, memberships and the development of their website.

I created designs for billboards, flyers, roller banners, large scale advertisements, social media graphics and an icon set that went on to feature on the council website.

07 Bundesliga Digital design & social media Having always produced designs for football and after featuring in an exhibition based in London, I was approached to work with the Bundesliga, Germany’s top football league.

My role was to produce exciting visual designs for the league’s digital platforms such as their website and social media. My designs have featured on bundesliga.com articles and their official Twitter and Instagram.

08 Dave Smith Bobsleigh Brand identity & print design

During an internship I worked on a brand identity for aspiring British Olympian, Dave Smith, who was bidding to compete in the Sochi Winter Olympics.

The brief was to create a stylish and effective logo to promote Dave’s bid to feature in the men’s bobsleigh team. The purpose of the identity was to attract investors for his Olympic bid. His brand portrayed his strong and powerful figure, along with his pride and passion for his sport and his country.

Logo inspiration - Before designing the brand identity we considered the audience, tone of voice and need for the logo. Dave’s motivation was to represent Team GB therefore British colours were important along with the shape of a bobsleigh and the ‘D’ in his forename.
