DESIGN DULUTH is a 3rd year multi-disciplinary studio which integrates architects and landscape architects to RE-IMAGINE the post industrial landscape of the city of Duluth, Minnesota. The Accelerator Hub DISSECTS and re-assembles a former K-mart and 1980’s era strip mall into a new home for the National Resource Research Institute. Building footprints were provided by the team of architects and otherwise all work herein was produced by the landscape architect. Integral to the design concept is the INTERPLAY between interior and exterior space, allowing the building programs to spill out into the LANDSCAPE to incorporate public space, office space, meeting areas, lunch rooms, and library space.

Over the past 100 years, the DUWAMISH River Valley of Seattle has been violently altered from a meandering river/estuary into an industrial monoculture. The vision of the project seeks to re-invest communities in the LIFE of the river, creating homes, opportunities for work and trade, and a vital healthy ecosystem for all.

In the post-capitalist city of the future the very concept of “LIVE/WORK” will have to be re-evaluated, and the definition of “work” re-defined. Providing cities with MOBILE markets designed for shop-boats (think house-boat, but for goods) begins a new paradigm of RESILIENT and sustainable business which can move according to the EBBS & FLOWS of tides and commerce.

The concept of ‘longhouse local’ builds on the communal dwelling history of the tribes of the Pacific Northwest, providing small group residence buildings, INFRASTRUCTURE to house trade and a new CULTURAL structure known as the Orchard House, which can be used as a hub for communities to come together to work.

A to X: Re-imagining 16th Ave from Aldrich to Xerxes - proposes to redevelop a 22 block section of 16th Avenue in North Minneapolis from Aldrich Avenue to Xerxes Avenue on the west into a corridor focused on EDUCATION and SAFETY for the neighborhood’s nearly 2500 STUDENTS, creating connections with 3 elementary schools and a high school. Students living in the neighborhoods who have previously been given the opportunity to be educated outside of their immediate school zones will now have to attend the most LOCAL school possible. As such, the existing public SCHOOLS which now sit either ABANDONED or nearly empty will undergo a massive INFLUX of students in the very near future, a reality for which the infrastructure in place is not currently suited to handle.

This three phase design began in teams, creating a guiding VISION for a 30 mile section of the Mississippi River between St. Paul, Minnesota and Prescott, Wisconsin at the confluence with the St. Croix River. This CONFLUENCE became the focus of my personal phase 2 and 3 designs, challenging the idea that an existing park space was the best celebration of such an important hydrologic merge. By repurposing the existing rail and highway INFRASTRUCTURE into pedestrian experiences, the new PEDECO bridge becomes a natural extension of an inward focused downtown and an innovative RAINWATER treatment train.

Gabion SEDIMENT collectors radiate from the new park space at 30 degrees into the rivers flow to create SLACKWATER conditions which promote sediment drop and thus provide conditions for the park to ‘GROW’ itself over time. The Confluence then becomes a self-perpetuating human/natural feature at the HEART of two rivers.

In response to the City of Austin’s rapidly expanding population of outdoor enthusiasts the Seaholm Intake Competition called for ideas which sought to integrate a former power plant PUMPHOUSE on Ladybird Lake into the city fabric. The site sat derelict for years but has become a well travelled THOROUGHFARE for joggers and dog walkers. As an intern at MESA Design Group together with Brinkley-Sargent Architects I developed and rendered the site master plan according to the architect’s foreverchanging desires to create a movement CORRIDOR with interactive image screens through the structure’s bottom level and a dense perched wetland GARDEN on the upper level. the architects provided base perspective images for the structure and I was tasked with providing PLANTS and detail. Shown are but a few samples of the final exhibits.
