Stitch Drilling – An Effective Technique of Concrete Removal Diamond drilling is beneficial compared to the conventional drilling technique for being a more accurate and faster process, but there is a limitation of this procedure. There is a restriction onthe size of the drill bits. The diamond drills are not available in a size greater than 1500 mm, making it difficult to drill holes greater than that size. This problem can be solved by the procedure known as stitch drilling.

What Is It? It is the process of removal of concrete. It is a technique for producing cuts in a concrete at depths greater than that can be cut economically with a help of a blade saw made of diamond.

How Does it Work?

The maximum depth for cutting in this procedure is determined by the precision of drilling the holes. Greater the cut, more will be the necessary diameter of the hole for maintaining an overlap between the adjacent holes. To cut a section that rests on foundation, the bond between the foundation and the concrete and any other anchors that hold the concrete to the foundation should be severed or broken.

If the concrete cannot be separated from the foundation by an economical technique, the size of cutout should be reduced to make sure the equipment chosen to lift the cutout section is more than the combined bond forces and dead weight.

Rotary-percussion drillers are used for the technique. The rotary -percussion type of drilling is chosen over the diamond-core drilling for being more economical and expedient. Personnel carry out the drilling with the rotary-percussion drillers either with the down-the-hole or the top-end hammer.

In case of the top-end hammer approach, it is placed on drill hole so that the impact force is transmitted through the extension rod to hammer bit. With the ‘down-the-hole’ hammer approach, transmission of the impact force takes place through the hammer bit without any loss of the impact energy. Thus, stitch drilling is a beneficial process as it can be used for cutting holes of various sizes and shapes on various strong materials such as concrete, metals and hardened bank vaults.
