SPRING AWAKENING is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com
Original Broadway Production Produced by IRA PITTELMAN, TOM HULCE, JEFFREY RICHARDS, JERRY FRANKEL, ATLANTIC THEATER COMPANY, Jeffrey Sine, Freddy DeMann, Max Cooper, Mort Swinsky/Cindy and Jay Gutterman/Joe McGinnis/Judith Ann Abrams, ZenDog Productions/ CarJac Productions, Aron Bergson Productions/Jennifer Manocherian/Ted Snowdon, Harold Thau/Terry Schnuck/Cold Spring Productions, Amanda Dubois/Elizabeth Eynon Wetherell, Jennifer Maloney/Tamara Tunie/Joe Cilibrasi/StyleFour Productions.
The world premiere of SPRING AWAKENING was produced by the Atlantic Theater Company by special arrangement with Tom Hulce & Ira Pittelman.
Spring Awakening premiered on Broadway when I was a teenager. Edgy, weird, and unapologetically honest about a lot of tough issues, it captured the cultural consciousness of theatre kids all around me — even in the relatively conservative, suburban area where I grew up. Our parents didn’t like it, and we might not have totally understood it, but it felt so incredibly relevant to the types of frustration, repression, and othering we endured daily.
I wish, more than anything, it was less relevant today. I long for a day when Spring Awakening feels tired, when someone might watch it and ask how something like this could ever possibly happen. That day is not today.
All across the world, people are being robbed of the right to selfdetermination. Governments, authority figures, and people in power — including those right here in our country — are not just complicit in the oppression of marginalized people. They are the architects of that oppression. Spring Awakening may take place in 1891, but the tactics used to obfuscate knowledge and silence dissent can be seen in news stories everywhere, from the suppression of opposing voices to the systematic degradation of rights for transgender Americans. The leaders of our modern society spend their days attempting to dismantle structures that offer inclusion to those who need it to survive; they discredit the value of diverse company and thought; they paint an equitable society as an unfair one.
The greatest lesson that I’ve learned from Spring Awakening throughout this process — while working with this luminous cast, indefatigable crew, and everyone at DramaTech in between and beyond — is that even in the face of such overwhelming adversity, there will always be those who persist in search of a better way to live. The students at DramaTech reflect humanity’s best qualities, and I feel lucky to exist in their orbit for a little while. They deserve a society that feels just as lucky to have them, that will welcome them with open arms, that will allow them autonomy to live their life as they wish.
I hope, tonight, you can be that audience for them. I hope you can accept their work and learn the lessons they teach. And tomorrow, I hope you wake up, imagine the better world we have been trying to build every day in the rehearsal room, and figure out what you can do to help make it real.
