WORD PAVILION Location: Central Park, NY Course: JAV101 Instructor: Katy Chey

The objective of this project was to select an artist and create a pavilion that pays tribute to their work. The proposed pavilion is devoted to the representation of words and their inherent power, inspired by the chosen artist, Barbara Kruger, who utilizes words extensively in her oeuvre. Through the incorporation of Kruger’s words in the pavilion, the project aims to showcase her artistic vision while enabling visitors to derive their own interpretations from the displayed words.

The interior of the pavilion features a diverse array of words that visitors can manipulate to construct their own narratives. This interactive experience allows visitors to engage with the power of words and fosters a unique and personalized connection with the artist’s work.

DESCENT Location: Bloor St., Toronto, ON Course: ARC201 Instructor: Sonja Vang jeli

The objective of this project was to select a thematic term and design a student center that embodies that concept. The program for this project was a study center for students, with the thematic term “descent” as the guiding principle.

The central idea was to explore how a descent can create spaces that facilitate gathering.

To execute this vision, the design incorporates a staircase as the defining element that creates distinct borders for each private study room.

Additionally, the furniture pieces were inspired by staircases and placed strategically throughout the study center to provide areas for private and group study. The aim was to showcase the versatility of stairs, demonstrating how even simple staircases can create areas for seating.

The exterior facade of the study center reflects the circulation path within, while also providing ample light to areas of gathering. This feature not only offers privacy to those inside but also allows glimpses of the interior space to those outside.

In this way, the design encourages curiosity and engages visitors to explore and appreciate the interior space.

The student center provides three different types of gathering spaces, those being: two private class rooms, three cutom designed seating areas, and one auditorium. All of these areas are built around the center atrium and skylight. The seating areas and auditorium utlize stairs to form both seating and seperation. The facade utilizes wood paneling to create semi-transparent opening to allow pedestrians from the front street to be able to view the inside while providing privacy to those within. Additionaly these panels mark the path of descent from the staircases along with fully opening at seating areas and rooms.

During the summer of 2023, I, along with 16 other undergraduate students from UofT’s Daniels Faculty of Architecture, under the guidance of architect Clint Langevin, participated in a ‘design and build’ workshop in collaboration with The Bentway. Our mission was to develop a versatile ‘modular’ furniture solution that could cater to the diverse programming needs of The Bentway. We worked closely with a structural engineer and accessibility consultant to produce these semipermanent furniture pieces. The project features four modules: a lounger, play structure, and an adult and kids’ chair, all of which can be reconfigured to create an accessible bar. The project now resides between Bents 90-92 for public use.

The project is an ensemble of four distinct units, each meticulously designed with specific FLIPPIN’ CHILL SHEET NUMBER: A# functionalities. Units A and B encompass seating arrangements tailored to different demographics; Unit A caters to a younger audience with smaller seating units, while Unit B SCALE: 1:50 DATE: AUGUST offers 18, 2023 expansive larger seating. Unit C is dedicated to a play unit, fostering interactive and recreational activities. Lastly, Unit D features a large lounger chair, providing a focal point for relaxation and comfort.

FLIPPIN’ In addition to individual uses for each unit, the Bentway also requestedCHILL the units to have a SCALE: 1:25 “final configuration” for when the units would be relocated to Bents 90-92. As for events, DATE: AUGUST 4, 2023 the Bentway requested that the units be able to form a bar. Utilizing one lounger, one play unit, one adult chair, and two small chairs, we were able to create the bar unit shown below.

CASTING VOIDS Course: ARC465 Instructor: Angela Cho

For this class I was tasked with the challenge of plaster and mold making. With little experience with the material, this class was a lot of improvision and learning on the go. The first assignment was to select an architectural precedent and take a section out of the building that caught your eye. For my section I choose a window panel piece from the House in Uehara by Kazuo Shinohara. This section showcased the prominent pillars that ran through the houe along with the angular branching the pillars took. These pillars influenced everything about the house, from exterior facade to interior space division. We then had to create a mould and plaster positive of this piece.

As seen through the images, the pillars are a large factor in both the structure and aesthetics of the house. I chose this exterior window in order to capture both the physical pillar itself along with the way it plays into function. The windows are shaped to fit into the pillar itself, displaying how it affects both form and function.

For the final assignment we created a culmination of every different projects. For the final assignment, I along with three others who chose the same precedent, were tasked to create a final sculpturelike project that combined all four of our previous projects. This class was much more than just a material exploration but also an exploration of how one presents, documents, and exhibits their work. The House in Uehara had a very monolithic nature and we wanted to capture that feeling in our project and documentation. We decided to create a new positive of our pieces combined and created carvings inside.

The project would emulate the physical nature of the precedent’s massive column along with showing how new space can be created within it. This project created very unique variations in sense of scale and lighting in photos and documentation.
