INTRODUCTION This application is for stage 2 architecture. The portfolio contains the usual 10 page application, then an additional 10 pages for each of stage 1 and 2.

This portfolio is an exploration of my design ethic. My aim is to make each page unique and contain evidence of the skills I used and the progression I made.

Unfortunately I don’t have the creative cloud at the moment which leaves me without access to some files so please excuse the loss of quality for some.

Salford is my number one Uni so I hope you like my work. I had a tour round the campus, the architecture floor and workshop and I am really excited about having the possibility to become a student with you.

Taking inspiration from Bridget Riley’s optical art, I sought to recreate them in three dimensions. After experimenting with his work I then designed my own art piece using an octagon by connecting every second vertex. Through visualisation I developed the design into an architectural model. As you can see from plan view, the design is mimicked.

A museum for the human body and diseases. It consists of a classic Greek museum building and an icosahedron virus sculpture containing a restaurant and viewing platform.

FINAL MODEL The final idea was a museum for the human body and diseases. The museum would be inspired by classic Greek architecture and provided a café at the rear. An icosahedron virus sculpture looks over providing a restaurant and viewing platform.

At the beginning of the year at Newcastle they hold a “Charrette week” which combines all the stages into many group projects within different categories. In my group we created a golden cow which would dispense free wine during the final event. It had a wooden frame surrounded by gold papier-mâché.

This work overlays different pieces of a threshold from the Louis Kahn Fischer House. These were: the plan, section and elevation as well as pictures of a model to add depth.

After drawing random but logical lines, I used green and brown to distinguish between the background and structure.

Based on the Soma Cube, each person in the studio was assigned a piece. Each component would be a building with a unique selling point and altogether would produce a market. Our group created an entertainment complex which situated on the campus.

FISCHER HOUSE A group project where we split the building into four quarters. We designed it using card cladded with balsa to achieve the right thickness and exterior look. Through careful cooperation they would fit perfectly seamed together using an exterior panel.

Continuing with the Soma Figure concept we would then create an entire market concept with all the pieces as placeholders for stalls. We would also need to include a hall The site is a green space on the university campus. The surroundings hold a road, many pathways and buildings made from brick and glass. The site is roughly 10x30m with each cube being 2.4m3.

The final design was to make it look similar to the buildings around it while experimenting the use of a wooden frame. I also played around with natural light using a panel with holes in to create tree like shadows. One of the main concepts in the design was how the floors wouldn’t connect to the glass so that the entire building shared space, allowing for the sounds of market callers and people talking to fill the atmosphere.

STAGE 2 SHOWCASE Our project for charrette this year was to create an interactive space by using an Arduino board and coding. We decided to create a dark room which contained moving robots, they held sharpies drawing patterns on the floor. Additionally, we had pressure sensitive steps that would cause pots of paint to pour over people and the floor. I helped suggesting the commands the robot would operate with and how it would be designed. I wired one of the bots and assisted in the creation of the space.

MON NEVUE FILM PRODUCTION A film inspired by ‘Mon Oncle’ with an opposing and modern spin. In the classic comedy we see a popular main character unattributed to modern technology. On the contrary, our character, whom I played, shows signs of obsession towards technology, yet lacks the awareness to the real world. Our story was a journey between a lonely modern world and a colourful social one.

After dropping his last mug, ‘Nevue’ would be forced to travel into town. After opening the only dialogue in the movie with an AI, he found his way into town to replace it. After a fall, his phone breaks and colour with music fade in. Reality is there for a moment. Until he gets a new phone.

For the home scenes we created a room at 1:25 made from casted concrete. We edited it in with a green screen and displayed it at the exhibition.

Through editing we were able to enhance our ideas and create the atmospheres we want. As we can see from bottom left slide the city glitches into colour as the character experiences his environment. My main role was to sound engineer which expressed some important themes in both the original and our movie.

LEITH DESIGN PROJECT During Semester 1 we visited Leith, Edinburgh. The project was to design an accommodation building for groups of a target audience that we propose. The building would also need to provide another trade other than tenancy. The biggest challenge was how to make the most of space in the dense centre of Leith.

Below are renders from my Revit model.

To aid my development process I created an A5 brief which would include some information about the residents, site reflection, themes and requirements. The users were varied but connected to themes used in the design. The main themes were self-grow, self-build, communal spaces, sustainability.

My final design was a three-storey apartment building. The dwellings are personally suited for the residents and partly designed by them. The residents were developed with desires, for example group 2 wanted to eat healthier while group 4 wanted to make bunk beds. Altogether there are 8 groups situated across two large 3-4 person dwellings and six 1-2 person dwellings.

The building would serve as a communal garden and activity centre, holding classes such as creating flower bouquets and crafting stuff with fast growing twigs. I proposed having a roof garden which would benefit the dwellers while also providing materials for the

ARC2009 DETAIL REALISATION For a different module we had to explore a particular threshold from our main design project, this could be a window, floor or roof system. To improve this I would give the details labels.

FINAL DESIGN RAMMED EARTH WALL

The proposed building was an exhibition of history in clay making. There are classrooms and benches for clay making activities. Long staying visitors can enjoy eating at the café, while a small shop exists at the entrance for passer buyers. A private sector at the top holds the staff room, storage and office space. My material protagonist was clay and soil, so the main construction was bricks while rammed earth inspired by the era of pottery would feature in the exhibition.
