In response to this new situation, a group of Seven Oaks teachers embraced a new concept for an old idea: “Year End ‘Zines.” We thought we could start them earlier and have kids work on them until we came back to school in April. At least that's what we thought then. Of course that never happened, and we were all forced to adapt to online learning right up until the end of the school year.
After it became apparent that this might be long term, we modified the idea of the ‘Zine and asked our kids to look at it from two perspectives: “BCV” and “ACV” (Before and After CoronaVirus). We hoped that in addition to the kids writing about the memories they wanted to keep from their in-school classes, we asked them to consider writing about their experiences of “homeschooling.” And that was when I thought we could create more than a Personal ‘Zine; perhaps we could develop an “Historical Document” to chronicle their experiences of this very special moment in time.
