Emirates Flight Catering builds world's largest vertical farming facility in Dubai Emirates Flight Catering (EKFC) and Crop One will coinvest US$40 million to build the world's largest vertical farming facility near Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central. The project is a joint venture with U.S.-based Crop One Holdings, the world's leading vertical farm operator. His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group said: “This is an important milestone for the Emirates Group, for Dubai, and for the UAE. This

investment to build and operate the world's largest vertical farming facility aligns with the UAE's drive for more agricultural self-sufficiency, a vision which began with the late HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE's founding father. The introduction of groundbreaking technology at the facility also enhances Dubai's position as a global innovation hub. When complete, the vertical farm facility will cover 130,000 square feet, but have a production output equivalent to 900 acres of farmland. At full production, the facility will harvest three US tons (2,700 kg) of highquality, herbicide-free and

pesticide-free leafy greens daily, using 99% less water than outdoor fields. The proximity of the farm to the point of consumption also substantially reduces carbon emissions associated with transportation. It will also ensure the quick delivery of the fresh products, reaching customers within hours of harvest, maintaining high nutritional value. The construction of the facility is scheduled to start in November 2018 and will take approximately one year to complete. The first products are expected to be delivered to Emirates Flight Catering's customers, including 105 airlines and 25 airport lounges, in December 2019.

The Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (ABCC) has revealed that USD 518 million worth of fertilizers were exported by the Arab region to Brazil from first six months of this year. According to the ABCC, the high number of fertilizers exported from the Arab region into Brazil demonstrates the strong ties maintained by countries like the UAE, KSA, Kuwait, Bahrain and Egypt among others. In fact, Kuwait hits USD 58.64 million worth of fertilizers exports to Brazil, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia exported USD 48.13 million, while UAE USD 42.87 million, Egypt USD 32.53 million and Bahrain posted USD 24.88 million. The vibrant export activity also reflects Brazil's keenness towards working closely with countries within the Arab region. “We are proud to announce that the Arab world exported a total of USD 518 million worth of fertilizers to Brazil. Most Arab countries performed excellently during the first six months of 2018. Brazil continues to express its commitment towards working closely with countries in the Arab world in order to help increase mutual trade across all markets, including fertilizers, concluded Michel Alaby, Secretary General and CEO, ABCC.

agreement with Cobb Europe for the territories of Saudi Arabia and a number of surrounding Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member countries. Al-Watania Poultry has worked closely with Cobb Europe for more than two decades in Saudi Arabia. Since acquiring the Cobb Egypt operations more than a decade ago, Al-Watania Poultry (Egypt) has been the Cobb distributor and a market leader in Egypt. Chairman Shaikh Sulaiman Al-Rajhi, a visionary in his own right, established AlWatania Poultry in 1977 with a vision to contribute towards the nutritional reserves of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In recent years, Al-Watania Poultry, under the leadership of his son, Dr. Mohammed Al-Rajhi (CEO), took initiative to expand AlWatania Poultry operations to reach greater heights. Currently the company processes more than 860,000 broilers/day. New state-of-theart automated hatcheries, feed mills, and processing lines have started operation. Further expansion will take the daily production to onemillion broilers by 2020. This is aimed at supporting the Kingdom's initiative to reduce dependency on chicken meat imports and increase by 20 percent local chicken meat production by 2020. Al-Watania has plans to double output of parent stock chicks to four million birds a year by 2020, through expanding its hatchery and grandparent operations in Al Jouf. It is also investing in a fleet of transporters fitted with the latest on-board SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2018

The Al-Watania decision to further enhance its relationship with Cobb is influenced by the breed's low cost of production of chicken meat. Al-Watania has benefited from the wideranging technical support teams that Cobb provides to advise on all aspects of production through its world-leading poultry experts. Currently, AlWatania Poultry is seeing their best ever Cobb broiler performances. Al-Watania Poultry has also taken the lead in training young Saudi aspirants in the field of poultry technology. This, too, is

a joint program with Cobb Europe in training and developing the next generation of poultry professionals for the Kingdom's poultry industry.

Ministry of Climate Change and Environment Urges Farmers to Utilize Modern Technology to Boost Quality and Production The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) conducted a series of visits to farmers and landowners in the UAE to encourage the use of modern agricultural and harvesting techniques in order to boost production and adapt the yield for commercial marketing. His Excellency Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, said: “Enhancing the productivity of local agriculture is crucial to ensuring the UAE is food-secure in the future. We can fulfill this goal

through diversifying food sources. Food diversification relies on recognizing the different objectives and contributions of traditional landholders and commercial farmers, and establishing programs to support both to ensure the sustainable use of resources. The support the state offers to farmers should be commensurate with their contribution as an incentive for them to become actively involved in commercial production.” His Excellency Dr Al Zeyoudi explained that only about five percent of landholders are involved in commercial production, whilst less than one percent contribute to local food supply. “We need

to develop programs to increase the engagement of landholders and farmers in the adoption of sustainable management practices, and encourage them to become commercial farmers,” he said. His Excellency Dr Al Zeyoudi added: “Local vegetable production provides around 20 percent of the market demand for fresh produce. While a wide range of crops is cultivated in the UAE, most are only harvested over a short season, with the majority offered in late winter or early spring. There are a few exceptions that extend over a season and are produced in greenhouses, whereas only one crop is produced for most of the year. Storing these crops to make

them available in the markets all year round consumes a considerable amount of energy for cooling, which increases their final cost.” He elaborated that most farmers are reluctant to adopt modern farming techniques and prefer field production, as it is generally the easiest and most profitable approach. However, field production demands a high consumption of water even with the use of modern irrigation methods.

Protecting rice plants by exploiting their natural defences Researchers in Indonesia have deciphered the chemical cues used by rice to attract a parasitoid that helps fight off

the plant's predator. The researchers created a system to imitate these cues, which could help investigate similar interactions in other crops and possible sources of non-toxic pest control. Rice is a staple food, relied upon by half the global population. The brown planthopper is one of rice's most destructive pests, causing damage by wounding the stem of the plants to lay the eggs for the next attack and by transmitting viruses that attack the plant. Researchers from Universitas Negeri Malang and the Indonesian Sweetener and Fibre Crops Research Institute wanted to see if they could target the brown planthopper without using pesticides known to harm the environment. To do this, they investigated the socalled 'tritrophic interaction' between rice, the brown planthopper and the parasitoids that prey on the brown planthopper's eggs. They extracted samples from rice infected by the brown planthopper and analysed their chemical makeup. They then compared this to what they found in samples taken from healthy rice, identifying the chemical differences between healthy and infested rice. They created a porous material from rice husk and soaked different pieces in chemicals extracted from either healthy or infected rice. In laboratory tests, the parasites were more attracted to the material infused with the infested sample. They also attached infused materials to posts and placed them outside in a rice field. Again, they found more parasitoids on the

Wageningen University and Nutriad present results on butyrate research Feed additive producer Nutriad, a pioneer in sodium butyrate applications for the animal feed industry, co-financed a research project on the use of butyrate as feed additive. The multi-year research project was concluded with the Ph.D. thesis of Pierre Moquet on the effects of butyrate in broiler diets, which he successfully defended on June 22nd at Wageningen University (Netherlands). Dr. Moquet started his Ph.D.research in the Wageningen

Animal Nutrition Group (WUR) to investigate an important conundrum related to the use of butyrate as an additive in animal feed: on one hand, this molecule has received considerable attention for its potential to improve intestinal health and animal performance, while on the other hand, the mechanisms underlying these effects have been described as very diverse and seemingly less consistent. Together with a fellow Ph.D. student at Ghent University, Dr. Moquet set out to explore this topic in the framework of a research project that was cofinanced by feed additive producer Nutriad and VLAIO, the Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship agency. Dr. Tim Goossens, Business

Development Manager Digestive Performance at Nutriad, coordinated support for the project. Dr. Goossens explained: “Dr. Moquet found evidence supporting his hypothesis that at least part of this variation can be attributed to the fact that different products deliver butyrate in distinct parts of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). These different release profiles result in specific digestive, microbial and immunological responses.” For example, when butyrate levels were increased solely in the proximal part of the GIT, or specifically in the small intestine, expression of host defense peptides was modulated and the levels of certain antibodies in the blood was

On the contrary, when additives where used to increase butyrate not only in the proximal GIT, but also the hindgut, no signs of gut inflammation were observed, while the apparent digestibility of methionine was improved, as well as the feed conversion ratio. “All in all, the data suggest that butyrate indeed has the potential to elicit important gut health stimulating mechanisms”, Dr. Goossens concluded, “but it is not an 'always beneficial, everywhere' product. Fruit Attraction prepares for record anniversary year Fruit Attraction, one of Europe's leading trade exhibitions for the international fresh produce sector which this year celebrates its tenth anniversary, is expected to receive 1,600 participating companies for its forthcoming 2018 edition, marking a 357% increase over the last decade. This year's show, which takes place in Madrid, Spain from 23-25 October, is also likely to be notable for an increased participation of North American

and Asian companies, signalling growing overseas interest in Europe as an export destination. Since its launch in 2008, when the event hosted 350 exhibiting companies in two halls, Fruit Attraction, which is jointly organised by Madrid exhibitor centre IFEMA and Spanish fresh produce federation FEPEX, has grown exponentially year-on-year. In fact, organisers are also anticipating a 16% increase in exhibitor floorspace this year compared with the 2017 edition, taking the total area covered to over 45,000m2. One of the biggest changes, according to Fruit Attraction managing director Raúl Calleja, has been the increased participation of overseas

companies, with the event growing in prominence, not just in Europe, but around the world, as a gateway to the European consumer market. Sizeable delegates are expected from South Africa, the US, Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Costa Rica and Chile. Closer to home, the European presence is expected to increase from France, Poland, Portugal, Italy, Greece and the Netherlands.

MAC Fruit Attraction announces its third edition in Cairo With an increasingly impressive trajectory, Mac Fruit Attraction will celebrate its third edition from December 8 to 10, in Cairo, as part of FoodAfrica. Organized by IFEMA and CESENA FIERA, two of the trade show operators from the main producing and exporting countries of fruit and vegetables -Spain and Italy- Mac Fruit Attraction will once again contribute to the positioning and international professional network of fruit and vegetable companies thanks to direct access to new strategic markets, which will allow them to contact local operators as well as operators from the local area of influence. The results of the second edition held in April 2017, showed the positive track record of this encounter, which saw the attendance of 10,830 professionals, importers, traders, distributors,

producers and representatives from the Horeca sector, among others, from Africa (41%), Gulf countries and the Middle East (29%), Asia and the Far East (16%) Europe and Russia (12%) and America (2%). This established platform for the horticultural sector welcomed the participation of 17 companies alongside the 294 companies from the Egyptian fair. This was an edition that continued to contribute decisively to the internationalization of Spanish and Italian products and brands with their access to new markets and the generation of business opportunities, in a market such as that of Egypt, which accounts for 556.7 million dollars worth of vegetable imports and 498.5 worth of fruits and nuts, as well as the African market, which allocates 5 million to vegetable imports. One of the most highly valued initiatives was the buyers programme that Mac Fruit Attraction made available to participants comprising some 300 professionals from the purchasing and distribution chain of more than 54 countries, mostly from Asia and Africa, with high decision-making power and negotiation capacity.

Hortiflorexpo IPM Beijing 2018 Registers Substantial Pluses with Regard to the Area, the Exhibitors and the Visitors Hortiflorexpo IPM Beijing 2018 ended with excellent values. It was possible to significantly raise not only the occupied exhibition area but also the numbers of exhibitors and visitors. The joint event organised by Messe Essen, the China Flower Association and China Great Wall International was thus able to impressively emphasise its position as the most important horticultural fair in China. Top marks were given to the multifaceted supporting programme which ranged from floristry shows to discussion forums. From May 10 to 12, 2018, a total of 35,196 trade visitors from 46 countries came into the New China International Exhibition Center. On 40,000 square metres, 796 exhibitors presented the newest plant SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2018

breeds, innovative horticultural technology as well as floristry requisites and garden features. Hortiflorexpo IPM Beijing 2018 counted exhibitors from 30 countries in total. The substantial rise in the number of foreign companies clearly emphasised the significance of the Chinese market. 215 exhibitors arrived from outside China - in 2016, there were still 189. The Netherlands, Ecuador, Colombia and Taiwan presented themselves on official national booths. Visitors found products "Made in Germany" on the German joint booth which the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture supported financially again. 14 companies from German horticulture

participated in the booth. Furthermore, the highlights on the booth included floristry demonstrations by top German floral designers. The next Hortiflorexpo IPM will take place in Shanghai from April 20 to 22, 2019. According to the regular cycle, China's most important horticultural fair will then go to the starting line in Peking in May 2020.

winner in the feed industry, with more than 30% savings in energy consumption, floorspace and investment cost compared to the incumbent horizontal belt coolers. Over the years the company became the global market leader for coolers in feed, petfood, aquafeed and oilseeds, partially by supplying coolers to nearly all of the major producers of pelletmills and extruders worldwide. Since the late 1980's the company is also building counterflow dryers for food, petfood and aquafeed, using the same superior efficiency provided by the counterflow heat exchange principle. The flagship multi-deck batch dryer has become the standard for many of the world's leading producers of extruded petfood and aquafeed, because of its high hygienic standards and fast changeovers between production runs. Dryers typically consume 40-60% of an extrusion line's total energy consumption, but counterflow dryers consume 20-50% less energy than belt dryers. So very significant savings are usually possible. The company produces all of its steel and stainless steel components in-house, using state-of-the-art laser cutting, bending and welding technology. A workforce of 100 in Haelen, the Netherlands designs and builds coolers and dryers for customers worldwide. A Field Service Team of 15 in Europe, Asia and Latin America supports customers with installation, commissioning, training and service.

Philips GreenPower LED toplighting chosen by Brookberries to produce strawberries earlier and year-round Signify (Euronext: LIGHT), the world leader in lighting, announced that Brookberries, one of the most innovative and market-oriented strawberry growers in the Netherlands, has chosen Philips GreenPower LED toplighting to move to an earlier crop and year-round production. With LED toplighting, Brookberries expects that part of its crop will be produced as much as 10 to 11 weeks earlier, resulting in higher prices. “We are seeing that more and more strawberry growers realize that they can use LEDs to bring the harvest of strawberries forward,” said Udo van Slooten, Business Leader Horticulture at Signify. “This gives them a head start over the competition and gives them a more predictable offer to their customers.” Brookberries, run by Marcel Dings and Peter van den Eertwegh, is a member of the Fossa Eugenia growers' association, which takes care of the sale and distribution of the strawberries. Brookberries chose to work with Signify because of the positive experience it had with its LED lighting technologies. The company gradually equipped all its locations with Philips GreenPower LED flowering lamps from 2012 onwards. The move to the new technology was the next logical step given the suitability of LED grow lights to offer more predictability and earlier yields compared to non-lit greenhouses. Signify's plant specialist and account manager proved invaluable

in helping them to take this step forward. “With the addition of LED toplighting we can now better steer our harvest times to provide our customers with fresh strawberries at the time that they would prefer to have them,” said Marcel Dings. “By aligning the crops grown in the new greenhouse with those grown in the existing greenhouse under Philips GreenPower LED flowering lamps, we can supply our customers with strawberries for a much longer time.” The installation at Brookberries involves long-term certified Philips Horti LED partners Agrolux and Codema B-E de Lier.

Interpoma, the biennial event organized by Fiera Bolzano exclusively for the apple production sector and scheduled for November 15 to 17 this year, promises to be bursting with new ideas and products.

Among the events most eagerly awaited by the industry is “The Apple in the World” congress, which will offer as detailed and exhaustive as possible a panorama of what's happening in the East, from Poland to Japan. Kurt Werth, Congress organizer and coordinator, gives us a flavor now of some of the subjects up for discussion. “The plan to look at what's happening in apple production in the Near and Far East,” Werth explains, “comes from an idea hatched jointly with Jochen Kager, Europe & Middle East Director of AgroFresh, because there are situations and dynamics in this geographical area that are worth exploring in more detail. Poland, which this year is expected to produce a harvest of 4.5 million tonnes another record and twice the size of Italy's apple production will be dealt with separately; the event will focus more on the emerging economies,” Werth continues. “For example, we will talk about Russia, where a large amount of investment in terms of both land and resources is taking place in the Caucasus region, for instance in the Krasnodar area and in Kabardino-Balkaria. Thousands of new plants have been set up there in the last five years, with trees imported from Holland and Italy. This is really interesting because it's not just new in relation to the old Soviet-era type of fruitgrowing, but something entirely new, with large corporations investing in fruit-growing.” SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2018

for the bedding and pot plant industry. In fact, this year's edition recorded the highest ever number of visitors in a single day in FlowerTrials' 15-year history! The preregistrations for visits to the exhibitors in Aalsmeer and Westland were also up, most likely thanks to our excellent pre-event information schedule which informs visitors on the main novelties from each exhibitor prior to week 24. With an increasing number of companies taking part, no fewer than 60 this year, upfront information on the new introductions becomes

key in choosing the right locations to visit. Visitors came from no less than 70 different countries. The organisation noted a strong increase in visitors from Southern Europe, specifically 34% more from Italy, without doubt thanks in part to new FlowerTrials exhibitor Gruppo Padana. Also Spain and France booked rises of 12% and 6% respectively. Visits from growers, traders and buyers from Eastern and Central Europe also rose with more visitors from Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Estonia, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2018

CASE IH DEFINES CATEGORIES OF AUTONOMY AND ANNOUNCES PILOT PROGRAM

S

FIVE CATEGORIES COMPOSE FRAMEWORK OUTLINING A SPECTRUM OF AUTOMATION. FIRST IN FIELD TRIAL WITH BOLTHOUSE FARMS, A DIVISION OF THE CAMPBELL SOUP COMPANY

ince the reveal of the autonomous concept vehicle, Case IH has been evolving the technology and further defining automation and autonomy as it relates to agriculture. The brand has been in discussions with customers around the world to study how this technology can be implemented for maximum benefit in their operations. Now, through its Autonomy and Automation Program, Case IH is researching and piloting autonomous technology in real-life scenarios. “While the autonomous concept vehicle reveal in 2016 showed the world what's possible with autonomous vehicles, it was just that - a concept. This working tractor provided a platform for us to start discussions with farmers and the industry about the technology needed for High-Efficiency Farming operations today and in the future,” said Robert Zemenchik, Case IH AFS global product manager. “We're ready to show how automation and autonomy applies across agriculture and how it can advance the precision farming solutions our customers are currently using on their farms.”

Five categories of automation for agriculture Diverse farming operations around the world require varying levels of automation. Through extensive Customer Driven Product Design research, Case IH found that current and future technology needs fall into five categories of automation for agricultural field applications. The categories and types of activities associated with each include: Guidance Coordination & Optimization Operator Assisted Automation Supervised Autonomy Full Autonomy “It's exciting to explore the efficiencies that automation and, eventually, full autonomy can bring to each farming operation,” Zemenchik said.

“The logic behind the categories is to provide a vision of what's possible. They are not linear, and a given fleet may even fit into more than one category at a time. Today, many of our customers are already operating in the Guidance and/or Operator Assisted Automation categories.” The five categories defined by Case IH start with automating specific tasks on a piece of equipment. Case IH led the way by first providing producers automation technology in the 1990's with AFS AccuGuide™ autoguidance, and it continues today with more advanced solutions, such as AFS AccuTurn™ automated headland turning technology and AFS Soil Command™ seedbed sensing technology. Researching and piloting autonomous technology in the field In 2018, Case IH is collaborating with Bolthouse Farms on an autonomous tractor pilot program. The goal of the program is to understand how new autonomous technology can be used and how it meets real-world, on-farm requirements.

36

GULF AGRICULTURE

SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2018

AGRICULTURE MACHINERIES “The only way to validate on-farm uses for autonomous technology is, quite literally, with field pilots where farmers use it on their own farm, integrate it into their own fleet and conduct their everyday activities,” Zemenchik said. As one of the largest carrot producers in North America, Bolthouse Farms is a yearround operation that farms extensive acreage across four states and Canada. The company's focus on and openness to advanced technology, coupled with their desire to improve productivity, makes it ideal for the pilot for the Case IH Autonomy and Automation Program. The pilot program will focus first on primary tillage and deep tillage - both highly repetitive

tasks Bolthouse Farms conducts year-round - and a small fleet of autonomous Steiger® Quadtrac® tractors pulling a True-Tandem™ disk harrow or Ecolo-Tiger® disk ripper will be used. This will help evaluate autonomous machine control in a variety of tillage applications, soil types, meteorological conditions and sensing and perception activities. “One of the primary goals is to receive agronomic and operator feedback on the use of autonomous technology in realworld farm conditions so Case IH can further develop and refine our technological control and machine optimization systems,” Zemenchik said. “Additionally, we will be able to learn from Bolthouse Farms what uses

they envision for automation and autonomy that we might not have already thought of.” Brian Grant, Bolthouse Farms vice president of agriculture, views the autonomous tractor pilot program as an opportunity to find new ways to make the company's operation more efficient and deliver highquality food for the growing population. “We're just now starting to play the 'what if?' game - where we're asking ourselves and the Case IH engineers the questions about what autonomous tractors are capable of,” Grant said. “And the answers to these questions are not 'if.' It's 'when.'” Case IH will provide periodic updates throughout the course of the pilot program.

The acquisitions granted the Biolchim Group the control of the key raw materials and innovative technologies that are used for the production of biostimulants, and boosted the Group's international growth. Biolchim is present today in more than 75 countries, has 7 subsidiaries and 4 representative offices and is continuously expanding. To transform innovation into actual solutions for farmers, Biolchim has launched WIN (Worldwide Innovation Network) an international network of collaborations aimed at shortening the time to market of new products and improving technology transfer. The network comprises a variety of partnerships with Universities, Research Centers, and test facilities that contribute to different phases

of product development, from screening of raw materials to field testing. Despite the positive growth perspectives, the biostimulant sector is also facing challenges. One of those comes from the regulatory side, where Europe is shaping a new harmonized framework for biostimulants that intends to secure a fair market while maintaining innovation in the industry. Another challenge is communication, needed by industry and stakeholders to introduce biostimulants into new markets and explain the advantages of integrating this technology in common agricultural practices. Biolchim is one of the cofounders of the European Biostimulants Industry Council (EBIC), which advocates a harmonized market for plant biostimulants through the creation of an appropriate regulation thus contributing to the development of the European biostimulant industry. Through the combination of the experience acquired in over 40 years of activity, an innovative product portfolio, and an accurately planned development strategy, the Biolchim Group has become one of the major realities in the global specialty fertilizer and biostimulant industry committed to deliver solutions to maximize the performance of any crop, anywhere in the world. AIR HEATERS

THE CASE OF THE INDIRECT AIR HEATER COMBITERM

I

n the last twenty years now, the various countries and major international organizations have been promulgating legislation and directives whose aim is to discipline the use of energy in order to preserve the environmental quality and to contribute to protect the heating systems safety.

Proper maintenance of the installations, if organized on time, allows to face the incoming season with a machine that is not only in its best conditions but also able to avoid wastage by ensuring energy saving and a resulting reduction in management costs. The technicians of

Termotecnica Pericoli are often involved in direct interventions in the field and they visit many poultry farms and productions realizing that the maintenance of the plants is underestimated or neglected. This not only affects the performance of the climate system but also affects consumption and therefore management costs. This problem was also found on our indirect air heater combiTERM and we decided to draw up a list of important tips and useful operations in order to always get the most out of our products. What Does Scheduled Maintenance Involve? The programmed maintenance plan should be carried out at least once a year it should include: A complete inspection of the fuel supply system, in order to check possible leaks and, if necessary, to replace all parts
