PORTLAND LITERARY CENTER
Tasked with transforming a withdrawn infill site into a programmatically diverse space for a literary society, the Portland Literary Center unfolds its compact spaces into an immersive literary experience.
Positioned at a soft angle, a reading stair and book wall reminiscent of towering bookstore shelving, direct visitors toward the bright and open second story library. Adjacent to the library, a coffee shop protrudes over the first floor gallery space. A lecture hall is nestled beneath the library, accommodating a variety of events. Administrators are housed in pronounced, weighty forms which afford views into the library below.
Within cascading forms resides an oasis for the reader, a domain for the writer, and a home for all who wish to further explore literary arts.

URBAN REFUGE
Designed in response to the rapidly expanding housing crisis in Portland, Oregon resulting from insufficient investment in equitable housing, this project proposes a temporary solution for the nearly 3,000 individuals who find themselves unsheltered every night.
By utilizing pre-existing light rail stops located throughout urban cores, micro-shelters can be built into stations to assist homeless individuals with temporary nightly shelter. Fitted within re-designed station columns and activated in less than a minute, shelters are deployed once commuter traffic has ended and transit stops are largely left empty and underutilized.

Users unlock the micro-shelter using a Portland Tri-Met metro-card. To ensure widespread access, users will only be able to unlock the same shelter once per week.
3
Once unlocked, users lift the folded shelter cover from the bottom and lock the middle hinge into place, securing the roof.
4
Stored behind the folded roof, users pull out the folded cot and pull down both legs securing the bed.
5
Users then pull down the privacy and protective fabrics stored in the cavity of the roof, and secure them to the bottom of the cot legs. The inner layer is made of a thick netting while the outer layer is safety, cut-proof fabric.
Once a shelter has been fully activated, users now have access to the back panel which contains a small ‘push-on’ light, electrical sockets, and a small heater – all of which are powered by the electrical core that runs through the transit station columns.
