Advanced Manufacturing Return Brief Problem Statement

Problem with Existing Products

Traditional ski goggles lack the flexibility to cater to individual skiers’ and snowboarders’ unique customisation preferences, needs, limiting their comfort, performance, and overall user experience. How might we design and manufacture innovative ski goggles that offer mass customization, allowing skiers to personalize fit to their face, style, and features while maintaining optimal performance and protection?

Existing ski goggles are produced with standardized designs through the use of a foam skirt around the inside of the frame. While current ski goggle designs consider the diverse range of facial shapes, personal styles, and visual requirements that skiers possess, they don’t consider the way the standardised fits limit customisation.

These existing products, when they do have customisation, it is in the form of Lense changeability. This results in excessive material waste in an effort to make a 1 size fits all style, and a missed opportunity to enhance safety and enjoyment on the slopes.

Mass Customisation Rationale

Market Gap/Segmentation

Standardised styles and functional aspects of ski goggles are consistent in the existing market. Customisability has been implemented by many companies as a way of enhancing customer satisfaction, creating a unique experience, meeting diverse customer needs, reducing returns, creating beter performance and making a great gift. Developing mass customisation that can be implemented into ski goggles, the customisations should enhance these aspects of the user’s experience. Possibly providing a way to assist in a functional part of the design while being executed to mass effect would departing from steriotypical customisation.

The market gap in customisable ski goggle’s lies improved personal security, a smooth system to facilitate customisation requirements, and manufacturing strategies to reduce future obsolescence. As many companies design their products to have a specific lifespan, they aim to increase sales of future products as they will be needed. This is called planned obsolescence. As a market segment, it reflects the opportunity to develop a pair of ski goggles with advanced manufacturing procedures and materials to adhere to their specific customisations and need for a pair of ski goggles that can have a longer lifespan.

User Case (UX/UI) As a user, wanting a long lasting, customised pair of ski goggles, they ski or snowboard frequently, and plan to continue to do so for a long time. They have a sense of their style, themselves and what they want in their ski goggles. The customisability should create an interactive user-experience that allows them to create a pair of ski goggles that can go well with the existing gear they already have. As frequent skiers, mass customised parts must be producible to certain specifications chosen by the user and manufactured in a way that can do so to a high standard.

The ergonomics of a ski goggles frame are crucial as they directly impact a skier’s comfort, performance, and safety on the slopes. A well-designed frame ensures a secure and comfortable fit, distributing pressure evenly across the face to prevent discomfort and gaps that may allow cold air or snow to enter. Additionally, proper frame ergonomics optimize peripheral vision, minimizing blind spots and enhancing awareness of surroundings, critical for navigating slopes and avoiding obstacles.

Ultimately, the ergonomic design of a ski goggles frame contributes to a more enjoyable and safe winter sports experience.

Ski goggles require well designed straps as they must remain securely in place during high-speed descents and rough terrain. A well-designed strap ensures a snug and comfortable fit over a skier’s helmet. This prevents the goggles from shifting or falling off, which can lead to impaired vision and potential accidents. The strap’s adjustability and materials also provide long-lasting comfort and stability. This allows skiers to focus on their performance rather than constantly readjusting their goggles.

The ergonomic considerations of ski goggle straps are integral to maintaining both safety and performance on the slopes.

Ski goggle adjusting components are very important as they directly impact a skier’s ability to adapt to varying environmental conditions swiftly and effectively.

Well-designed adjusting mechanisms ensure that skiers can easily modify the fit, ventilation, or lens swapping, catering to changing weather, light, and comfort requirements while maintaining a secure and fun experience. In this way, ergonomic adjusting components enhance the versatility and adaptability of ski goggles, providing users with the confidence to tackle diverse terrains and weather conditions with ease.- Quick Release Buckles.

The ski goggle grip ergonomics directly influence a skier’s ability to securely handle and manipulate the goggles in varying weather conditions. It can ensure that skiers can easily adjust or remove their goggles, even while wearing gloves, preventing fumbling or any discomfort on the slopes. Ergonomic grip components not only enhance user convenience but also contribute to safety by enabling quick and precise actions, such as clearing fog or swapping lenses. As a result, this could be done without compromising stability or focus during skiing or snowboarding.

Foam padding and airflow vent components significantly impact a skier’s ergonomic comfort and visibility. Well-designed foam padding offers a snug yet cushioned fit. This seals out cold air and moisture, while airflow vents ensure proper ventilation to prevent fogging. The combination of ergonomic elements and the use of foam enhances the overall skiing experience by maintaining clear vision and minimizing discomfort.

Taking into account the wearer’s unique anthropometrics, are paramount. A well-fitted goggle should have a standard shape that aligns with all user’s facial contours.

This creates effective protection from the elements. Properly addressing anthropometrics, such as face shape, nose bridge, and cranial dimensions, will result in enhanced comfort, improved vision, and reduced distractions on for users. This is done through designing to fit a 99th percentile male and 1 percentile female.

Optimal visual clarity and performance are delivered through the ergonomic considerations of lenses. Lenses, tailored to specific weather and lighting conditions, reduce glare, enhance contrast, and minimize distortion. Due to this, skiers will have a clear and unobstructed view of the terrain, allowing them to make informed decisions while navigating the slopes. Lens styles such as toric, cylindrical and spherical are ergonomically designed for different frames, aerodynamics, and fields of view. They can reduced distortion, enhanced peripheral vision, and improved optics.

By accommodating the skier’s specific needs and preferences, these lens styles optimize vision, contributing to a safer and more enjoyable experience. Lens ergonomics are integral to safety, precision, and overall enjoyment during winter sports activities.

Mass-customisability Nike By You Nike By You offers the oportunity to customise the standadised sneaker designs that nike already produces.

Accompanied by these selections for the customer to make their customisations, a list of suggested design-colour combinations are given in the form of cataloged shoes.

This is an effective form of mass customisation. However, this is due to the large amount of different choices that can be made and not a specific specification tailored for the customer. For example, doing a 3d scan of the user’s foot, then choosing the best fit for them. Obviously, the customer has input into this decision too.

Mass-customisability Applicable design customisations, from Nike, to ski goggles could include: Choosing the colour and texture of separate components that are highlighted as you move through the system helps visualise the final product. With the implimentation of a wide range of colours and textures across a large number of components, a truly unique, custom design can be manifested by the customer.

Leaving them with enhanced satasfaction with the process.

A 3D model of the pair of ski goggles could offer an interactive component which would improve the user experience. The implimentation of this form of visualisation for the customer delivers a sense of professionalism, the ability to make changes before purchace, and a unique user experience.

The implimentation of multiple choices, although not as custom as 3 demensional scanning of the user for a perfect fit, still can enhance cutomer satasfaction and create a unique user experience.

These could include an existing style to build off, sizing such as small, medium and large, and gender the ski goggles are designed for.

This could also offer the opportunity to start with an existing combination of these choices that is already sold, allowing the customer to make a slightly differing pair of ski goggles from the original.

Although lens customisation options are limited, each style is unique.

At each level of the workflow, I followed in the design process, I evaluated the form factors, customisability opportunities, functionality and overall style. Testing with my 1:1 scale head model produced valuable insights between each iteration of the three concepts.

Advanced Manufacturing Evaluation and Testing Workflow

The testing and refining prior to the finalisation of my three concepts required further consideration into the user experience, comfort and manifacturability of the product. Testing of the model on the 1:1 scale head continued as iterated concepts were modified, adapted and combined. Effectively taking and testing the best aspects of previous conecpts on the head, the final concept were finalised.
