MATHEUS SIMON

I am deeply passionate about Architecture and Sustainability, and my goal is to change and transform people›s reality by integrating Architecture and Urban Design with nature and the environment. I believe that by considering the natural world and its needs, we can create better and more sustainable communities.

As an Architect and Urban Designer from Brazil, born on April 12th, 1989, I am currently based in Lund, Sweden while pursuing my Master›s Degree in Sustainable Urban Design at Lund University. With over a decade of experience in full architectural projects, including residential, commercial, hotel, and shopping center developments, I have also founded two startups, a real estate business and a sustainable contractor utilizing Light Gauge Steel Frame technology. My goal is to utilize my ethical, competent, leadership and technical skills to dedicate myself to transforming cities through sustainability.

GASTELYCKAN: RE+

LUND - SWEDEN

YEAR: 2023

Master´s Thesis - Lund University

RE+ is a design that challenges the status quo of a society that is facing a climate crisis, bringing life to an industrial site. Nowadays, Gastelyckan is an industrial site, where 2,500 people work every day, an area surrounded by residential districts and in the middle of Lund’s urban expansion.

The RE+ project will regenerate this place and use nature (by urban farming) as the main actor to bring back life and offer people a sustainable lifestyle. The design proposal is developed considering permaculture design principles to create a community that lives integrated with urban farming, taking advantage of natural resources available on site.

Sweden, like many countries, heavily relies on food imports and exports, making food sustainability a global issue. Climate change and industrial unsustainability pose significant challenges for future project scenarios.

The RE+ project aims to revitalize an industrial area using urban farming and permaculture principles.

REGENERATE: Reuse existing buildings and revive hard surfaces. Transform an industrial site into a natural space by revitalizing it.

REFARM: Create a natural water network, connect farming areas with urban spaces, and use agroforestry for sustainability.

REURBAN: Develop quality residential spaces, integrate with the public realm, and promote urban farming for a sustainable lifestyle.

The strategy RE+ is to combine the permaculture concepts to implement regenerative agriculture, urban farming and combine them with a sustainable urban design, creating an innovative approach to the cities. This strategy aims to create a community around food farming through education institutions, connecting residential areas and educational facilities with urban gardens and urban farming.

DAR ES SALAAM - TANZANIA

YEAR: 2022

Master´s Degree - Third Semester - Lund University

V+ is a concept that incorporates verandas into the design, with the name „V+“ standing for „Verandas Plus.“ The mixed-use design aims to provide residents with income through commercial areas, farming on the top floors, and solutions for improved living through internal courtyards and social spaces.

V+ uses locally sourced clay bricks with a concrete structure, and the bricks will also be used as a shading element and decorative feature on the facades. The suspended verandas will have a pattern inspired by African culture and will provide accessible walkways from the ground floor to the sixth floor. The facades will also feature street art inspired by African vernacular architecture, highlighting the unique identity of the building.

Challenges: verticalization, because of lack of contact with the public space (streets), informatily in houses, businesses, lack of access to water and dry seasons. Identity: happyness in people and social spaces on the streets (verandas).

V+ is a proposed solution that addresses three main aspects: identity, permaculture, and the use of suspended verandas. V+ is a building with varying heights that is connected by suspended verandas, allowing the ground floor verandas to be accessible to all residents. The building is located on a corner lot, close to a main street and surrounded by two pedestrian streets.

ARTÚNSHÖFÐI - FOOD+ REYKJAVIK - ICELAND

YEAR: 2022

Master´s Degree - Second Semester - Lund University

Iceland is a small country with extreme climate conditions presenting powerful winds, snow and a lack of sun during the whole year, creating a challenging scenario to produce food locally. It is possible to conclude why Iceland imports half of the consumed food in its country.

Food+ aims to create a unique community where people will be part of the food production system, exploring the public spaces with foodrelated activities (food university, food markets, food hall, fish markets, fish production, among others) and using the private buildings to combine the food production with living. Another essential concept is to create a sustainable and productive neighbourhood to serve as an example to transform Iceland into a food production country.

OPPORTUNITIES

Using vertical farming, using hydroponics and aquaponics combined with a unique type of greenhouse, developed in Iceland. Aiming to use these technologies to grow food vertically and using fishing farmings to increase the food production of Iceland.

Considering that almost %50 of the food consumed in Iceland is imported from other countries, means that most of these products travel long distances by sea to reach the country.

The design aims to work with urban farming, using the highest technology to increase food production even in extreme conditions. Through a simple process that combines the use of the LED lights that imitate the solar radiation to feed the plants and the use of sustainable energy from the geothermal sources, it is possible to heat the greenhouses in the region, even without the direct sunlight.

BUILT ON IDENTITY

HELSINGBORG, SWEDEN

YEAR: 2021

Master´s Degree - First Semester - Lund University

Gåsebäck is an isolated island nowadays, separated from Helsingborg, a place with identity, but lost in the city context. The challenge is to renew, recycle and densify the area, transforming it into a quality neighbourhood.

The aim is to create a sustainable community based on its identity and explore the personality that already exists on Gåsebäck. The graffiti creates a unique culture in the neighbourhood, creating a unique opportunity for a fresh start.

OFFICE: Koren Arquitetos

The work developed by Matheus Simon in this project was supporting the Architect Sergio Koren to develop and execute the ideas in technical drawings and in the 3D model.

The participation started in the initial drawings and at the moment the project is been analysed by the city hall construction department for further approval and execution.

FINNISH INSTITUTE NEWCASTLE

- UK

This project uses sustainable and innovative design basis. The environmental design is present in the terraces/roof gardens, where is possible to have an interaction with nature for all the institute users.

The Finnish Institute project was designed to be the Finland cultural institute to be built in Newcastle upon Tyne — UK. All the design is based on the perfect symmetry, represented on

this project by A paper series, the proportions of the building were created using this concept and a matrix too. The grid is broken only to create an interaction with the existing city.
